World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Ivory Coast

We continue our analysis of the Group C options with a look at Ivory Coast. In what’s regarded as one of the most open of the eight groups, Sabri Lamouchi’s men open their campaign with a showdown against Japan on Sunday June 15 at 5pm before taking on Colombia four days later at 5pm, then squaring up to Greece in a potentially decisive final group match on Tuesday June 24 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

In a group containing Morocco, Gambia and Tanzania, The Elephants won four and drew two of their six matches. Finishing top with 15 goals scored, five conceded and a couple of clean sheets accrued, they then defeated Senegal 4-2 in a two-legged play-off to seal their passage into next month’s tournament.

Most Starts Boubacar Barry (8), Salomon Kalou, Gervinho (7), Yaya Toure, Cheick Tiote (6), Didier Drogba, Didier Zakora (5)

Most Goals Salomon Kalou (5), Yaya Toure (4), Didier Drogba, Wilfried Bony (3)

The Key Targets

The Ivorians arrive on the back of an impressive 2-2 friendly draw with Belgium, though the game once again exposed their defensive limitations. Former Spurs midfielder Didier Zakora and Kolo Toure (both 5.1 in FantasyiTeam) were the central defensive pairing that evening in March, though Lamouchi also has the option of Sol Bamba should he move the former into a sitting role in front of the back-four.

An unimpressive clean sheet record in qualifying suggests defensive returns look rather doubtful, though elsewhere in defence, Serge Aurier offers a greater attacking threat that fellow full-back Arthur Boka – the highly-rated 21-year-old notched six goals and six assists for Ligue 1 side Toulouse and has been linked with a move to Arsenal due to Bacary Sagna’s expected absence. Available for a mere 4.6 in FantasyiTeam compared to Boka’s 5.0, Aurier is the bargain buy at the back.

In the centre of the park, Zakora will vie with Cheick Tiote, Serey Die and Romaric for the defensive midfield berths, though their appeal is minimal in comparison to Yaya Toure. The most advanced of the central three, the City man notched four times in qualifying and arrives on the back of his extraordinary 20-goal season – unsurprisingly, he’s highly priced in FantasyiTeam, setting you back 7.3.

Up top, Didier Drogba remains the main man. The former Chelsea striker netted three times in five appearances during qualifying and is number one spot-kick taker ahead of Toure – he fired a late penalty equaliser against Morocco last September when the City midfielder was on the pitch. Drogba’s physical presence could be a real problem for the Japanese in the final group game, in particular, though he’s far from budget-friendly at 8.9 in FantasyiTeam.

Whilst Drogba is likely to be the favoured Ivory Coast forward amongst Fantasy managers, both Salomon Kalou and Gervinho (available for 7.6 and 7.8 respectively in FantasyiTeam) carry exceptional form into next month’s tournament and may prove a cannier acquisition. Kalou – the top scorer in qualification with five strikes – scored 16 goals and provided six assists for Lille in the season gone by, while Gervinho produced nine goals and 10 assists for Roma and looks vastly-improved from the player that struggled at Arsenal.

The Long Shot

Wilfried Bony is uncertain to start but, if he brings his domestic form to the competition, will surely offer a threat off the bench at the very least. The Swansea striker netted in three of his five group games and with 17 goals in his debut year in the Premier League, will be feeling a little unlucky if he fails to nail down a role in Lamouchi’s XI. Coming in at 8.6 in FantasyiTeam, he may be a punt too far.

Absolutely massive article on Suarez for anyone interested. Not read it yet but will do so when I have the time. A few people have recommended it to me though.

So i've spent some time trawling through scout articles, community articles, qualifying statistics and online previews and come up with my team predictions for all 32 World Cup starting XI's:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QL3AfOFXpKR1-pIz2FhoqW_uvbL1ZaVwWoYNMiR4KFA/edit?usp=sharing

Obviously it's still a bit patchy, so if you've got any input into where i've potentially gone wrong(even kits colour wise!) please let me know and i'll edit them.

There are also some teams where information is scarce, so don't take my word on the line-ups for teams like South Korea, Costa Rica and Honduras.

Carvajal will start at RB for Spain IMO.
Montolivo perhaps over Marchisio in the Italy side. Rossi could be Immobile as well, lots of question marks on Balotelli's strike partner.
Also think Hummels will start at the back for Germany.

Yeah, i'll change Carvajal in, the question marks all over the Italian side depend on Rossi's fitness, could mean a change in formation to 4-3-3. Also, in most of the previews i've seen Mertesacker and Boateng have been the starting centre-halfs.

Yes there are still question marks so can't really be sure. Honigstein who is very reputable for German football though had this XI (capitals are the differences from yours):

            Neuer
            Schmelzer, Boateng, HUMMELS, Lahm
            KHEDIRA, Schweinsteiger
            Muller, Kroos, Reus,
            GOTZE

Very strange though without Ozil who I feel will almost certainly start.

Yeah, that's probably for the first game against Portugal so a little bit more defensive than for the latter two games, which will mould my prediction.

Henderson's energy will help massively covering Stevie. Especially as there's already a natural understanding between the two of them and he could link up with the other Liverpool boys nicely. Would definitely prefer him in the system and on the back off this season.

basically they don't have any other left backs (they had pocognoli but he's a bit of a kolarov), and vertonghen is much better at left back than vermaelen. so almost a victim of his own ability vertonghen

This was the intention before Strootman got injured and if Blind was good enough at LB, basically. We don't have any LB though and with Strootman gone the predecited lineup from the link is exactly right.

He'd have started in the old 4-3-3 most likely, would have been between him and Depay, with Lens being the favourite. The switch to 3-5-2 basically means Lens is benched for an extra CB though. He'll be subbed in a lot I think, or make a comeback if the 3-5-2 massively fails in our friendlies.

Will LVG stick with the 5-3-2 against Australia? I can understand being more defensive against Spain(and lesser so, Chile) but I can see him changing it up against the Aussies, particularly if they need to win by a large margin(GD)

According to Van Gaal the 3-5-2 isn't more defensive, because the mentality is still offensive, or something like that. I think he'll stick with this system, even against Australia, because in theory is masks all our weaknesses well while still bringing the best out of our strengths, being Sneijder RVP and Robben. Van Gaal talked about it a bit and mentioned it being an easy swap to our old system: you just take off one of the CBs (De Vrij most likely) and bring on an attacking player (Lens/Depay or even Huntelaar). Alternatively you swap Van Aanholt for Fer/De Guzman/Wijnaldum and shift Blind to LB and you have LVG's preferred 4-3-3 with 2 offensive mids.

Those seem to be firmly in the plan B category for now though.

I think he makes it sound more attacking when he calls it a 3-5-2, when in fact I view it as more of a 5-3-2, as the two wide men are actually full-backs. But I can understand the system, really sorts out the defence crisis whilst maintaining the key attacking spine of the side, I like it, quite innovative.

Hmm I'd say yes. Even with the internet Hitler's problems would have still been at large:

Jews still in control of the majority of the wealth, capitalism and nationalism still at large (probably more than ever). His propaganda might have gone either way though (more people to influence, but at the same time more people with access to a media source to stop him)

He's going to go sit on Man City's bench.

This reminds me of Clichy, I always thought he was a liability and then he managed to get a transfer to City. Sagna is better then Clichy was but he also made quite a few errors in his time.

RVP had one good season, Nasri has been very hit and miss and carried by his team mates, as for Clichy he could play at championship level and nobody would notice.

City may dominate for years to come, hope they get hit properly for FFP

          Sounds simple to me.
Pick a squad limited to 3 a team. Once teams get knocked out, it goes to 5.
Each round you can pick a new team once this happens so you aren't stuck with players eliminated.

Arda Turan's agent confirms offer from English club and Man United considered 'most likely party'

    Turan's release clause: €40m

    Arda Turan's agent Ahmet Bulut:

“Arda is currently playing at a big club with big ambitions. He wants to be part of that success, but we must wait and see what happens”

“An offer from an English club has arrived”

“As in every transfer, two parties, the player and the club, they must make a decision.”

Not worth 40 mill.. He's not as good as Mata, more of a winger but still..

he wouldn't go for 40m, it's just mentioned as the release clause. Would likely be quite a bit lower

Yep I'd imagine so, he's a good player but if Lavezzi is going for 20 mill (apparently) then Turan is only worth around 20, different types of players but similar skill imo.

Turan would be more technical and Lavezzi more athletic, but both would be great options in the PL for us 😀

Nowhere yet, there's just rumours coming from PSG that he would be allowed to leave if they received a bid for around 20 mill

Could the Recovered Balls data from their clubs last season be also accounted and be brought to the WC performance or Club performance is different?

I'd imagine club performance could be completely different in some cases as some players play totally different positions / tactics between club and country..

The main guys (Ramos, Alonso, Busquets etc) for Recovered Balls over the last season will still do well, but you can't really predict otherwise just from club form.

yep I imagine it would be a bit of misleading if I assume the player could copy his club RB form in the WC.

What happens if PSG breaks the financial fair play rules again?

With an endless amount of money, another fine wont worry them in the slightest.

Another one season in the CL with only 21 players...

The only thing to make clubs conform, if the fines are not simply a way to boost the bribery funds for EUFA/FIFA, would be for League point deductions enough to lose a championship or Chumps League qualification.
I have a feeling huge court cases would ensue and the clubs would win.

It's simple, if they want a deterrent then they should just ban offending clubs from the CL for a season or 2

But, as Wenger said, then the sponsors, who invest a lot of money in the CL, wouldnt be happy. So the UEFA would just be shooting themselves on the foot, reducing the value of their own product.

then they must decide if they really do want fairness or maximum money in their pockets, it's quite clear that they can't have both.

In any case, sponsors may be unhappy, but that's what sponsors do. Others could be signed up, in the end it wouldn't be such a big issue

I agree with your sentiments PompeyFan, but have to agree with Wenger and RonH,
if a sponsor pulls out other sponsors will not pay as much viewing it as a devalued marketing opportunity.

The sad thing is our football has become ALL about big Multi-National investment.

But they CL wouldnt be worth as much, it would be less appealing, as it wouldnt have all the big name clubs & players if UEFA banned them...

The current system allows them to keep all the best clubs in it, plus they just take 50m of the clubs that break the rules.

              Money is all that matters.

I understand your points, but it would depend on how many teams are banned for the competition. I used to work in sponsorship for several years and if 3-5 clubs were not in the competition I don't think it would make much difference. And there are always a whole slew of other companies with big pockets wanting exposure.

You say the competition would be devalued, well it would be worth as much as companies are prepared to pay, and at such stake levels I think their account managers would be able to really get a premium price out of these companies

EC investigated FFP for potential violations of EU law already and concluded that they are in support of FFP, and while particular cases might turn in favour of clubs, it would extremely likely require UEFA to either break FFP rules itself, or those rules to have consequences that were unpredictable.

But this is all hypothetical. Thus far PSG has not repeated their rule violation, they very much thought they hadn't violated them in the first place, and they have never hinted of taking UEFA to court.

By the attitude towards the sanctions, I'd say City seems more likely to appeal against UEFA at some point. But they probably will be advised not to unless the case is one of those I mentioned above, because otherwise they'll probably lose it.

absolute joke...but there is a conflict of interests at play here, as uefa, fifa etc are primarily interested in making money, which is done through tv deals, merchandise sales etc. banning a club from a competition would greatly diminish these revenue streams so why would these organisations cripple themselves I guess...
