World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday One, Day Five

Fantasy managers are treated to a feast of football once again this evening, with a trio of fixtures on the agenda. Undoubtedly, the standout match is the 5pm kick-off, where Germany brace themselves for a tough opening showdown with Portugal:

Germany: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Mertesacker, Howedes; Lahm, Khedira, Muller, Ozil, Kroos; Gotze.

Portugal: Patricio; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Coentrao; Veloso, Moutinho, Meireles; Nani, Almeida, Ronaldo.

Judging by the team sheets, Philipp Lahm is set to reprise his club role for the Germans, with the captain likely to be fielded in the centre of the park. Jerome Boateng and Benedikt Howedes are set to be handed the full-back roles, whilst further up the pitch, those recent rumours suggesting Mesut Ozil could be dropped turned out to be nothing more than red herrings – as many expected, the Arsenal man takes his place in the starting XI alongside Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos and Mario Gotze in the four attacking slots.

Portugal line up as expected. Cristiano Ronaldo recovers from injury to take his place on the left of a front three, with Nani wide right and Hugo Almeida handed the central role up top.

Later on, the second game in Group F gets underway at 8pm, where Iran and Nigeria go head-to-head. Both sides will be desperate for a win to boost their prospects of progressing, though with upcoming clashes against Argentina and Bosnia still to follow, neither of the underdogs have been subject to much Fantasy investment. Carlos Quieroz’ side are expected to park the bus and hit their opponents on the counter, though the Africans will be hoping the likes of John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Peter Odemwingie and Emmanuel Emineke can make the difference in the final third.

Our 11pm kick-off looks an even affair as Ghana square up to the USA. With both sides in the same group as Germany and Portugal, Fantasy investment has been minimal – Kevin Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan carry the main threat for Kwesi Appiah’s side, whilst Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley look the most likely for Jurgen Klinsmann’s troops.

      I'd prioritise Alderweireld.

      If you're thinking of another sub, if possible change formation and do Rojo for KDB. Most defenders get similar blocks and RBs from what I've seen, cleanies are still the priority.

    1. Does Brazil vs Mexico definitely count as a GW2 game? Basically, if I take (C) of Neymar, will it reduce Neymar back to 14?

      1. its gw 2 and the option to click on 2nd phase should be open tomorrow, if you mean in your current lineup it will remove his pts so don't do it.

      2. yes but far right player that doesn't fit into formation will get benched automatically so if you have a high scoring player don't do it

        If I'm on a 4-3-3 and took out Luiz for Dzagoev, Luiz goes and formation changes to 3-4-3

      Everyone was spreading and retweeting to vote him on twitter, and that's what seems to have pushed his price down.

        Heydari is an easy out with two attempts at increasing his pts...Valbuena is a borderline issue but again two bites at the cherry to increase his six pts...I may stick with Rojo.

      Wakey. What to do:

      1. Beikha -> Ayew, then tomorrow Bentaleb would be a backup if Ayew sucks, or I could replace Valbuena with him, and possibly take Verthongen in for Rojo, or not.

      2. Valbuena -> Ayew, tomorrow then I could switch to 4-3-3 and have Verthongen in for that new free def spot, still having Bentaleb as a backup if Ayew does badly.

        Problem is, if I do Beikhadez -> Ayew now, and Ayew scores, I'm deemed to keep 3-4-3 because Beikhadez is my farthest right player. So, if I bring Ayew for Valbuena instead, I can as well play 4-3-3 in the end.

          Do it. Rojo's 7pts are decent, play the odds and try to boost your last midfield spot with Ayew and Bentaleb. Vert can sit this one out.

            Feck it, the way I'm putting it up there suggests I want to swap Valbuena out in any case if Ayew doesn't score less, so basically it's just a question whether I want to maybe have Verthongen in for him instead of Bentaleb. So I can as well just take Valbuena out now and have better use of my bench, right? 6 points is not good. Right?

    Want to change from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 but understand that deletes the RW. Mine hasn't played yet (Dzagoev) but if I change formation will I still be able to bring him on later?
