World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 7, Day 1

Holland clinch third place in the 2014 World Cup after a comfortable 3-0 win over hosts Brazil. Robin Van Persie nets his fourth goal of the tournament, whilst Daley Blind and Georginio Wijnaldum also find the net in Louis Van Gaal’s final match in charge:

Van Persie Back in the Goals
Despite a series of poor displays over the knockout stages, the United striker kept his role in the starting XI last night. Louis Van Gaal made just two changes to his line-up, bringing in Jordy Clasie and Jonathan de Guzman for Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong in the centre of the park, with Georginio Wijnaldum tucking in behind Van Persie and Arjen Robben up top.

Having failed to net since Matchday 2, the United man quickly rediscovered his scoring touch against the beleaguered hosts. An early foul on Arjen Robben allowed Van Persie the chance to fire home an excellent spot-kick and take his tally to four for the tournament – level with Lionel Messi and Neymar and eclipsing Robben’s total of three for the Dutch. Elsewhere amongst the attackers, Sneijder’s absence proved beneficial to Wijnaldum. Previously utilised as part of the central midfield four, a move to a more advanced role allowed the PSV man to grab his first goal of the campaign in the latter stages of the match and afford us a decent differential for last night’s encounter.

Blind Delivers Again
Handed a role on the left of the midfield four, the versatile Ajax man served up the points at both ends of the pitch last night to justify our Fantasy faith. Blind’s first-half strike took his attacking returns to a goal and three assists over seven appearances, whilst his 70th-minute withdrawal still afforded owners a fourth clean sheet of the campaign – last night’s result means Holland conceded just a single goal in their final five fixtures of Van Gaal’s tenure, providing Fantasy managers with points aplenty over the tournament.

Brazil End With a Whimper
Thiago Silva’s return from suspension made little difference as the demoralised hosts were taken apart again. Phil Scolari made six changes from the side that were beaten 7-1 by Germany but the Brazil defence once again let down its Fantasy owners – the 3-0 win means they managed a single clean sheet over seven matches and conceded an incredible 14 goals. The likes of Willian, Ramires and Jo were handed starts further up the pitch but made little impact and, since losing Neymar to injury, Brazil have managed a single goal in two matches in a dire end to the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Stefan de Vrij was top performer for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with an impressive 13, followed by Jordy Clasie (five) and Daley Blind (four). For Brazil, the back-four were the main men – Thiago Silva managed six, with David Luiz on five and Maxwell and Maicon next in line on three apiece.

i think he would still get very solid points in a midfield alongside matic as the deeper player. his through balls are excellent and chelsea midfielders usually contribute a good portion of their goals.

I can see a midfield trio taking shape. 4-3-3 with wingers tracking back. Not sure where Willian or Salah will fit, but they can remove Ramires for one and pull Fab into the deeper position in a 4-2-3-1

        ----- D. Costa ------
        Hazard ------ Oscar
        ----- Fabregas -----
        Ramires - Matic

              Reply to Dino.

As Costa Rica have shown this year, it's at least possible for smaller national teams to reach the knockout stages - only penalties stopped them from going further.

You could argue that the World Cup is one of the most equal competitions going - see also Denmark & Greece winning the European Championships.

Much more interested in those as competitions than the Premier League or the 'Champions, Runners-Up, Third-Place and Fourth-Placed Teams Cup' (as the Champions League should be known).

As per below if it wasn't for the seeding I think the smaller teams would have a much better chance of reaching these big tourneys and with that experience they would be stronger.

If all fifa wants is the top teams in the knockout stages why not just have an invitation only tourney and forget about the sop of giving the weaker nations some crumbs from the top table.

Re Costa Rica they as all minnows have to did it the hard way with no easy games against minnows like all the top seeds got (even if they stuffed up in these games).
How is a so called small team supposed to do well when they are knackered having played so many big games to get to the knockouts?

At least you can choose who to support in domestic leagues.

European domestic leagues have been corrupted by the seeded champions league money too which hasn't helped.

Yeah I do enjoy it somewhat but at least being from England you are usually top seeds and therefore have a good chance of both qualifying for the main event and also qualifying from your group.

I'm sure when Jules Rimmet envisioned a world cup he didn't envision it as a competition which should be set up for all the big teams to qualify as easily as possible for the finals.

If it were a fair non seeded competition where all participants were treated equally regardless of tv market or population base then I think it would be better for all of football.

Fwiw I don't like the way the Champions league has gone the same way too

World Cups and international breaks are completely different animals.

One is the main football event of the Summer, and the other is an unwelcome interruption to the FPL season.

I am not looking forward to the 2022 World Cup if it stays in Qatar and has to be played in a Winter break. Move it to Australia, or somewhere else where they can put on a proper Summer tournament!

What's annoying with Palace and Southampton is that they start with a tough game then go on a nice run!

Optimus will be alright with WC in GW2 😉

This is not based on rotation as I'd play their players every week just a shame they start with a tough fixture.

Will def have one or two Stoke players for their run, if Vorm leaves it could be a Bego Fab rotation.

personally i think there is a lot more value in having it for the DGWs later in the season. a couple of hits in the early season is ok, its the DGW that can really make a big difference imo.

      interesting.

I think the first international break was the perfect time to WC. More active players making more transfers so you can actually make some money while mopping up all the future risers (in form bandwagons).

It was the thing that i did that made the biggest difference in my mini league - that and getting SAR very early on.

By the time they played theirs, i was out of sight.

I was all set to have Tadic in my team (as long as his price isn't ridiculous), but I'm having serious doubts over Southampton after the signing of Pelle. The man has got "flop" written all over him and considering the type of striker he is, I'm beginning to worry about Koeman's tactics.

with sanchez now (and walcott coming back) does this mean wilshere will play deeper? he was part of the attacking trio in midfield last season. do you think a wilshere/ramsey midfield would work or one of them benched for a more defensive player?

Wilshere only played on the wing because we had so many players injured.

He plays the deep role, but Wilshere and Ramsey don't work defensively.

Wilshere will have to oust Ramsey to be in the first eleven.

There's 3 spots for Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott and Cazorla to compete for. Sometimes they could all play with Giroud on the bench. Podolski and Ox are options from the bench.

Centre mid will be Ramsey plus another. Either a new signing or Wilshere/Flamini/Arteta competing for the spot.

I can go for Hummels, Boateng, Garay, Demi, Lahm, Kroos, Masch, Messi. Which one of this u suggest?

Can't see him getting more than 11 points. Maybe one of defenders, if they don't concede, or Messi. But if I go for Hummels and they concede I can't see him gettin more than 11 points.

So Speroni and Green or Begovic and Heaton are my favourites for goalkeepers 🙂 Will also consider Adrian and Green

      Expected prices for these goalies?

I was looking at Begovic/Green, they rotate really well for almost the entire season

When do you like to play your WC? Just keep playing until the team looks stuffed one week? Save for DGWs at the end of the season? Straight away? I reckon the best time is the first international break (GW 4 normally)

DGWs at the end for me. but it does depend on how bad your team is at the start. i dont mind taking hits early on.

imo it is a bit of a waste at the end because you can actually plan for those DGW in advance pretty easily. The first international break is a great opportunity to build TV without losing points and setting up a long term squad after getting a few weeks to see everyone play.

TV isnt that important for me personally. there are always cheap guys who do well, 4.0 defenders miraculously keeping more clean sheets than the bigger guns etc.

That's fine if you are doing really well but for most people the season is over by then

I always have to wonder how much of it is a self-parody act, and how much is genuine, insufferable egotism. Since he's not the finest actor the world's ever seen I'm leaning towards the latter explanation.

I am an (Indi)an and I joined this site to raise 'Vlaar' against the leaders of the Fantasy Game. It was quite 'Cille' on my part to underestimate all of your talent 'Blind'ly.I probably would need 'Wij'ardly power to match your 'Class' act. I am sorry if I am 'Rob'bing you of some of your 'Persey'ous time. I request you to r'depay' my trust that I put in you all to forgive me and hope that its all water under 'De Vrij' now

    On McDonalds, current team is:

    Cillessen (10)
Boateng, Hummels, Garay, De Vrij (13)
    Mascherano, Kroos, Lahm
    Robben (3), Messi, Mueller

    Bench: Neuer

    1. Do I put Neuer in for Cillessen, even though he has 10 points?
    2. Who to put as captain?

    Thank, Jonny 🙂

Stick with Cillessen, 10 points in a decent return.
Tough to pick a captain... coin toss between Hummels and Garayyy
