World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 7, Day 2

Mario Gotze emerges from the bench to fire Germany to World Cup glory with a late extra-time winner over Argentina. The South Americans fluff a trio of gilt-edged chances and fail to register a single shot on target over 120 minutes as their tournament ends in disappointment:

Subs Win it for Germany
Mario Gotze proved a handy differential for Fantasy managers as the World Cup came to its conclusion. After starting three of Germany’s first four matches, the Bayern man was shifted to the bench in each of the previous two games as Joachim Low’s decision to field Miroslav Klose through the middle forced Thomas Muller into a role out wide.

While Muller served up a second blank in seven appearances, Gotze climbed off the bench on 88 minutes to help secure the silverware for the favourites. Having previously played a part in only one of Germany’s first 17 strikes of the tournament, Gotze produced when it mattered most, volleying home an Andre Schurrle cross with just seven minutes remaining of extra-time

In terms of personnel, Joachim Low made just one change for last night’s match, with Christoph Kramer replacing the injured Sami Khedira in central midfield. Kramer lasted just only half an hour before being forced off with concussion, allowing Schurrle the chance for further game time off the bench. The Chelsea man continued his excellent campaign by serving up the cross for Gotze’s winner and, despite failing to start a single match, still managed to produce three goals and an assist for his Fantasy owners over the tournament.

Goals Dry Up for Argentina
Alejandro Sabella’s side only have themselves to blame after missing the three best chances of the match last night. Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi and Rodrigio Palacio all spurned great opportunities as Argentina’s toils in front of goal continued – despite a wealth of talent up top, they scored more than a single goal in only one of their last six World Cup matches. A consistent source of clean sheet returns for Fantasy managers, Gotze’s goal denied Sabella’s troops a fifth shut-out of the tournament, after they had kept out Iran, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland in four of their previous five fixtures.

Argentina’s dire attacking performance afforded the victors a fourth clean sheet of the campaign. Having kept out Portugal, USA and France prior to last night, Germany were buoyed by Mats Hummels’ recovery from a knee problem and with the Dortmund man at the heart of defence once again, Low’s side justified the show of faith that saw many Fantasy managers benefit from investing in their main assets at both ends of the pitch.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Jerome Boateng led the way for recovered balls amongst the Germans with 12, followed by Mats Hummels (nine), Bastian Schweinsteiger (eight) and Toni Kroos (five). Martin Demichelis was top for Argentina with 12, with Marcos Rojo (nine), Ezequiel Garay (eight), Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Mascherano (both seven) also impressing.

it's a waste of time even thinking this might happen

I think it was in the early 1970's offside was abandoned more than 18 yards from goal in Scotland for one season as an experiment...it did nothing to improve the game

Sorry, not very well worded by me.

Jafalad's main argument against his opponents in this debate is that we're just speculating and assuming it wouldn't work. We don't actually know for definite. But neither does he.

I wasn't aware of the Scottish trial you mentioned but even if that hadn't happened, you can't try something out on the basis that you don't know that it will be bad.

That's no better worded by me! One more try.

Jafalad seems to be saying that since we don't know what will happen, we should try it. I'm saying that we would need some evidence from smaller trials before trying it in professional leagues.

But I also strongly suspect that the evidence would show a dumbed-down game of goal-poaching and disintegration of intricate build-up play (which is what I value more highly than goals).

Bad tactics for Southampton to buy non-English players as replacements. Shame they can't sell Pelle or Tadic for 30m each next year.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Lessons leant from World Cup fantasy football games

With the World Cup now over I thought I’d ask what lessons you’ve learnt from playing World Cup fantasy games, which arguably require different skills and strategies to season long games.

Here’s a key lesson I’ve learnt – it really does pay to put all your eggs in one basket. In season long games this tactic is highly risky and also difficult as there is often a restriction on having only three players from one side. But in short competitions like the World Cup it is vital to bet heavy on one team doing well rather than hedging your bets. In the Fox game for example the eventual winner’s final XI featured four Dutch players, six Germans and Messi as his only break from his prediction of German and Holland clean sheets and goals.

So what lessons have you learned and how will you approach Euro 2016 games differently?

As ever, the key is understanding the scoring and how to gain an advantage from it. The last few rounds I was happily playing 5-4-1 in McDs. Not sure I'll be adopting this strategy in FPL though.

In the mcdonalds game you really didn’t need to put all your eggs in one baskets. even the defenders at one end of a 7-1 or 5-1 mauling could still get an okayish score. My main lesson would be not to play mcdonalds fantasy football again unless they changes the rules

I completely agree with you on the eggs and basket bit. Great tactic that has worked for the top few in FOX.

I think a massive mistake I made was not having 11 starters. I thought I could skirt by having Depay in my team, hoping he comes off the bench in a pointless 3rd place play off, and that really cost me. VERY SIMPLE RULE that I forgot after the glory of Schurrle 😆

Another is, in World Cup fantasy games, I think it's actually alright to take a hit once in a while. Not having the balls to take a hit or two(Unlike my FPL season) really cost me. If you look at the top few, especially 2nd place. He took quite a lot of hits to get the best possible team each week, and that got him to 1st place in quite a few of the rounds. Obviously, this doesn't always work, and too much hits can definitely not be too good. But, a couple here and there could really make a difference. If I had taken 1 or 2 more, probably would've finished a lot higher I reckon.

From the Telegraph game - 40 transfers overall, was never sure how many to save for the knockouts. In hindsight I'd have been even more aggressive in the group stages, as going into the knockouts with a lead and then defending it by backing the big guns in defence would have paid off. As it was, I saved about 15 transfers for after the groups but the goals completely dried up.

Still, came 7th in the £25 1K prize money league and got free entry into the same one for the prem this yar, so could've been worse.

No idea. Shirley by now FFS have spoken to Mr Axford and are able to give us little bits of info, eg January Wildcard being scrapped, changes in bonus points etc.

It would make it exciting I think to release little bits of "nuggets" in advance. And no, I don't classify the release of Peter Schmeichel's price as exciting.

Sneak preview of the rule changes:

          - You can't have more than two players whose surnames begin with the same letter.
          - If a player reaches 50% ownership they're removed from the game.
          - You now have a joker which you can play in any GW and it doubles your whole team's score for that round.

I'm actually for the ownership rule. There should be a limit as to how many % of people can own a player. I don't how it will work but it would make the game much better
