Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Defenders

After the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game opened for business yesterday, we’ve been busy assessing the Player Price List for the season ahead. Having analysed the Goalkeepers in our first article earlier today, we turn our attentions to the defenders next, beginning with the cut-price options.

After shipping 61 goals last term – more than any side bar the relegated trio – Aston Villa have been placed firmly in the budget bracket this time around, with their main men coming in at 4.5. Holland’s World Cup hero Ron Vlaar is the clear standout candidate for Paul Lambert’s side; he earned bonus on seven of the nine occasions his team produced a clean sheet, though with five of those shut-outs arriving on the road, the midlands side have proved more than a little unpredictable. Jores Okore could offer an intriguing alternative after recovering from the injury that forced him onto the sidelines for the majority of 2013/14. Elsewhere, the full-back options are currently a lottery and with Leandro Bacuna classed as a midfielder once again, there’s very little reliable attacking threat on show.

Midland’s neighbours West Brom dovetail home/away perfectly with Villa over the season and have a couple of new signings in the sub 5.0 price range that are worth keeping an eye on. Belgian international Sebastien Pocognoli sets you back 4.5 and seems poised to take on the left-back role following the departure of Liam Ridgewell. New boss, Alan Irvine, has also drafted in former Fulham man Chris Baird, though it remains to be seen whether the 4.0-priced utility man can claim a starting berth. There’s a remote possibility that he could claim a holding midfield role.

The promoted sides are always ripe with budget options and Burnley duo Ben Mee and Jason Shackell are available for 4.5 to offer an alternative to those who have baulked at Kieran Trippier’s loftier price tag. Michael Duff is even cheaper at 4.0 but it seems likely that manager Sean Dyche will replace the veteran in the heart of defence: he’s had two bids for West Brom’s Craig Dawson (4.5) rejected. For those eyeing up the Clarets after they delivered 18 shut-outs last term, they alternate home/away with Hull over the full 38 Gameweeks.

The Tigers can offer James Chester, Maynor Figueroa and Liam Rosenior for 4.5, whilst Paul McShane and Alex Bruce are even cheaper at just 4.0. If he can steer clear of injuries, Chester looks the likeliest to partner Curtis Davies at centre-half and offer a stronger security of starts than the rest of his budget team-mates. A goal and three assists in the final 12 matches of last season also underlines Rosenior’s top flight improvement.

Revisiting the promoted prospects, Leicester’s main men are nicely camped in the 4.5 bracket. Former United man Ritchie de Laet produced two goals and five assists from right-back last term and looks the best option for those eyeing up a rotation partnership with Southampton over the 38 Gameweeks. Skipper Wes Morgan is similarly priced and missed just one match last term, finding the net on a couple of occasions. Matthew Upson comes in at 4.0 after joining from Brighton earlier this month, though it’s uncertain whether the veteran has been earmarked as back-up by boss Nigel Pearson.

Southampton can offer Callum Chambers at 4.5, with the promising full-back hoping to nail down a starting berth under new manager Ronald Koeman. At present, Chambers’ game time remains uncertain but, if he can prove himself over the pre-season matches, he could be an intriguing choice, given the Saints’ excellent opening schedule. We’re uncertain on the centre-back pairing, at St Mary’s, with both Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte subject to recent transfer speculation. This could yet bring both Maya Yoshida (4.5) and Jos Hooiveld (4.0), onto the radar.

With a transition also going on down at White Hart Lane, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Spurs shake-up. New boss Mauricio Pochettino helped Southampton to 15 clean sheets last term and if one of Kyle Naughton, Benoit Assou-Ekotto or Ezequiel Fryers can edge into the starting line-up, at 4.5 apiece they would be worthy of our attentions.

The Palace defence will inevitable be a popular source for mid-price defensive assets but, in the budget bracket, we’re limited to the fortunes of Adrian Mariappa. Bearing in mind he started each of the last 10 Gameweeks of the previous campaign, Mariappa, at 4.5, could just be the value route into a defence that delivered 12 clean sheets in the last 28 Gameweeks of 2013/14.

Palace rotate home and away with West Ham, although, from the Hammers’ squad, only James Collins is available at 4.5. Like Mariappa, he could still emerge as a Fantasy prospect but, having started just two of the final 10 Gameweeks of 2013/14, he looks to have fallen down the pecking order under Sam Allardyce and could be a risk too far. If we want to invest in a Hammers rearguard that kept seven clean sheets both at home and away last term, the mid-price bracket seems our only solution.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett have both been priced at just 4.0 this time around. Neither is a guaranteed starter under Alan Pardew, though, and with Feyenoord’s Daryl Janmaat arriving to replace Mathieu Debuchy on the right, Dummet faces a tough task to oust Davide Santon at left-back. Fabricio Coloccini looks the safest route at 4.5. The Argentine earned bonus on six of the eight occasions he collected a clean sheet and could appeal to those considering a rotation with Sunderland over the 38 Gameweeks. The Ryan Taylor (4.5) situation is also worth monitoring – he seems unlikely to make a claim for a staring berth but, with his set-piece prowess, he could make some handy cameos once back to full fitness.

Sunderland’s new signing, Billy Jones, the injury-prone card magnet that is Wes Brown and the decidedly unexciting John O’Shea are all available for 4.5. It’s hard to justify a Black Cat defender, however. If Vito Mannone can shrug off the challenge of Costel Pantilimon and replicate the resilience that saw him average 4.6 ppg in 2013/14, it’s difficult to look beyond the Italian, whose save points strengthen his appeal over any defensive team-mate.

QPR are the final promoted side and they boast Danny Simpson, Richard Dunne and Clint Hill for 4.5. However, it remains to be seen whether either of the two centre-halves will keep their starting berths in the season ahead – the imminent signing of Rio Ferdinand underlines that Harry Redknapp is determined to significantly strengthen a defence that managed just nine home clean sheets in 23 Championship fixtures last term. Ferdinand’s price, when he lands at Loftus Road, could be of interest.

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron started 37 of last term’s league matches, yet comes in at just 4.5. The Potters’ home form particularly boosts his appeal – Mark Hughes’ side shipped just 17 goals in front of their own fans last term, producing seven of their nine shut-outs at the Britannia. As we’ve seen, the Potters afford us an excellent home and away rotation with Swansea over the season.

Indeed, the potential departure of Ben Davies could bring Swansea’s Neil Taylor onto our radars. The former has been linked with a move to Spurs since the installation of Mauricio Pochettino and if Davies makes the switch to north London, Taylor, at 4.5, looks perfectly poised to take up the left-back role and could hand us a rotation partnership with Stoke’s Cameron for just 9.0.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Bit of advice for you...

Try not to just post a team without any explanation.

Post combos of players or perhaps a note or two about where you like / dislike your team as a whole.

It spurs conversation, shows you're trying & adds content to the forum.

      We all win!

    RMT:

    Mannone Krul

    Onuhua Cameron Cahill Jones

    arnie Haz Fab Shelvey Albrighton

    RVP Dzeko Adebeyor

idea is to play the home fixture between shelvey and arnie each week and four defenders and some weeks play three at the back and play bboth arnie and shelvey. staying away from gunners attack at the beginning because of poor fixtures against good defensive teams imo. Thoughts?

I think they've signed some good players this season.
Siem De Jong is quite good, Jaanmaat also. Remy Cabella is well thought of but I've never seen him play and I'd expect a good midfielder also to replace Cabaye.
So I expect them to do better this season than last, Pardew will be under pressure and all that.. just a hunch.

Austin - Cameron - Mariappa = all maybe / probably not nailed on so monitor closely.

Also, this line up means you'll have to play Austin or Albrighton each week; are you comfortable with that?

Do you know how QPR & LEI fair in rotation dept or are you considering using a 442 some weeks as well?

Yeah the 4.5's are sticky enough.. all the starters are from defences I'm not keen on.
Austin has 2 nice fixtures in the first 3 so I'll play him in those, after which I'd assume there shall arise a budget option that we'll be wanting.

Austin is just a cheapie really.. not sold on many of the striking options at the moment really.. could see myself going with Bony if he stays at Swansea and a Spurs striker if they sign one.

More goal attempts in less time on the pitch.

        Probably has spot kicks.

We've seen Long's ceiling but, if Jelavic can get his conversion rate up from 7% (yup, you read that right... a paltry 7%) then he has the potential to be a 15 goal scorer at a very nice price.

Posted this to a different crowd yesterday.

A bit of options of defensive rotation. Opinions welcome

I'm assuming (because that's what I'm gonna go with) we'll have:
1 expensive defender who will play ever week,
1 CPL defender who will play all except on (1 ars, 5 eve, 8 CHE)
Upson as 4.0 bench fodder who plays on GW 7 (BUR)

            Nice!

So much better when ppl give some input themselves as it spurs conversation.

So, Cameron will be fighting for time with Bardsley so keep an eye on that.

As for Vlaar... I honestly don't know if i'll hold a single AVL player this year.

They were wildly inconstant last year with more of their CS taking place on the road & they have just a brutal sched to start this year.
sto, NEW, HUL, liv, ARS, che

            To answer your question:

Chester at Hull could be nice as he was a starter last year until he got hurt.

Also, if Chambers get a run at Southampton then he'll be the cheapest way into that back line.

Finally, Simpsons started most games for QPR last year & has premiership experience.

Not silly at all, because he takes Pens, Corners and FK since Suarez is gone and Gerrard will play every game if he is fit.

Good to be back. I had literally not logged on here since the end of last year's PL.
      FPL team created.
      FFS membership paid.
      Let the tinkering begin.

Defense of MUN, CPL, HUL, STO, SOT could cost as little as 23.5 (or less depending on how the transfers shake out) and is pretty good for the first 10 weeks.
      Food for thought.

Can't help thinking that it will take a bit of time for LVG to shore up that United backline. I'm thinking the extra cash spent on a Chelski defender could be well worth it. So many decent options at 4.5 to accompany, too.

I'd monitor Carroll, with Valencia and Zarate there it's a bit hard to know how West Ham will play and how well he'll do.

I doubt HBA will play... He had a falling out with Pardew last season and is likely to be sold. Arnautovic is a great option.

Outside of actually putting the ball in the net Andy Carroll has been one of the most dominant forwards in the game over the last two years.

For example, Carroll had 51 goal attempts in just 15 games last year.
So that's 3.5spg which is about where Sturridge & Dzeko are shots wise...

Problem with Carroll is he only converted on 4% of them... 🙁

If he managed to up that to a 'normal' 15% conversion rate then he would have scored 8 goals in those 15 games.

The point I'm driving at is if Andy Carroll plays 30+ games this year expect to see 15+ goals, easy.

          Mate, I love your logic,

Whenever i watch Carroll it feels like i'm watching an ultimate direct football forward, his presence and knock ons are brilliant. I'm hoping he can turn in 13+ goals and 6+ assists 🙂
          and at 7M i feel that's a tasty investment.

thanks heaps for the stats and input!

Points per 90mins or something like that is a possibility but, overall point there's just no way.
        (Barring serious injury of course)

If we look at the stats, Silva crushes Nasri on every key metric there is.

Touches in the box, shots on target, chances created... the list goes on.

That's because Nasri rarely finished the 90 when he played tho.

If this season he played all the 90 like he supposed to (based on last season performance), he is easily up there; points per price ratio.

Exactly... hard to make a stronger case *for* a player by telling us he's more prone to rotation / substitution.

Listen, I love Nasri & had him in my side last year but, the fact remains Silva gets more shots per game 2 vs. 1.5, touches in the box 5.1 vs. 2.7 & chances created 3.1 vs. 2.7 than Nasri.

It'd take a miracle for Nasri to come out ahead of Silva this year or any.

He wasn't a starter by the end of last year & we forget he scored that brace boosting his late ownership surge coming on a sub in a meaningless game.

His best position is occupied by Rooney & he's far too slow to be an effective wing.

If both Rooney & RVP are fielded up front & he's tucked in behind then I'd move him up a ton but, until I know that I don't see the value in holding a 9mil non-starting out of natural position mid when there are soo many better options.

Note: I think people are too quick to overlook the 8.5mil Liverpool mids.

For example, if Sterling gets a regular game, as I suspect he will (becasue he can be fielded both in behind Sturridge or on the wing) then I'll take him at 8.5 over Mata every time.

Can't see it unless injuries to their strikers. Don't forget about Diouf there now as well.

Anyone considering Robbie Brady? The guy was on fire last season before his injury. Was on set pieces and penos. Will Snodgrass take his position and set pieces?

Too early to say but he may well have lost his place with Brady's new buys for them. Should have a clearer picture when friendlies get under way.

With Jelavic / Snodgrass / Huddlestone taking the PK's & set pieces away I don't see much value in owning him.

While he did have a nice run of fantasy returns last year he hardly had the underlying stats to get excited about him as a long term prospect anyway.

Is Azpi nailed(at least for the first few weeks) on with the arrival Felipe Luis?

      atm I have

      Mannone // Krul
Zab // Jags // Azpi (Bruce // Duff)
Ramsey // Erikson // Silva // Fab (Shelvey)
      Giroud // Roo (Kone)

and thinking of Kone>Zamora then Shelvey>Sigg if he signs for Palace.

      Thoughts?

I think Azpi is going to play 90% of their games. Mourinho dropped Cole so he could play last year so he's obviously rated very highly by him.

Zab too risky now that Sagna is aboard. Don't think Everton have the fixtures to support investing in Jags straight away - better value elsewhere to me. Azpil should be nailed to RB spot but who knows if Mou will do the same - still have Ivan there as another option. Also, 342 is not a viable formation.

Lol woops, should be // Kone.

Thanks for the heads up. Might to Zab to to Ivan and work the rest out.

          Thought on MCI defence coverage?

Pelle is not a very defensive minded coach. Don't rate them defensively at all and would not be looking at any of their defenders but that's just me 🙂
