Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Having examined the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders and Mid-Price Defenders, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List continues this morning. This time around, we consider the merits of the premium priced rearguard options for the campaign ahead:

Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both come in at 6.0 on the back of a season which saw the Gunners deliver 17 clean sheets (11 at home and six away). Serving up 157 and 155 points respectively, the pair both notched twice and notched 20+ bonus points but while their security of starts once again looks unquestioned, the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle offers us a cheaper alternative. Priced at 5.5, the Frenchman looks set to replace compatriot Bacary Sagna a right-back and, given that the latter made 34 starts last time around, it seems Debuchy would be guaranteed security of starts for the campaign ahead. The downside is a penchant for picking up yellows – Debuchy was booked 12 times in 46 appearances for the Magpies.

The situation at Chelsea is an intriguing one. Jose Mourinho’s side produced 18 clean sheets last time around and look poised for significant investment once again, though the arrival of Filipe Luis places a degree of uncertainty right across the back-four. At 6.0, Cesar Azpilicueta offers the cheapest option amongst the Blues defence after replacing Ashley Cole as first-choice left-back in 2013/14 but Luis looks poised to take over that berth, either forcing Azpilicueta onto the right of defence or back onto the bench.

If Mourinho has earmarked Azpilicueta for the right-back berth, though, then question marks may hover over Branislav Ivanovic’s security. The Serbian is the priciest of all Chelsea defenders at 7.0 and could be shifted into the centre, leaving him to vie with John Terry and Gary Cahill (both 6.5) for game time in the middle. With the keeper situation also yet to be decided, the best route into the Blues backline looks a little fuzzy at the moment, though pre-season should hopefully afford us a window into Mourinho’s thinking.

Seamus Coleman’s outstanding displays in the season gone by have ensured the Everton right-back joins team-mate Leighton Baines as one of the costliest defenders on the FPL market. Both have been slapped with a 7.0 price tag but, in spite of such a lofty valuation, their points potential at both ends of the pitch still suggests they could be worth the outlay. At the back, Roberto Martinez’ side managed 15 shut-outs in the previous campaign, whilst six goals and two assists from Coleman and five goals and five assists from Baines underlines their attacking prowess. With a European schedule also to factor in, we may see more rotation in the midfield areas once again and with the forward role still undecided, the Toffees full-backs may be the most secure route for investment.

Vincent Kompany could prove to be the safest option in the City defence this time around. With the arrival of Bacary Sagna making a significant dent in Pablo Zabaleta’s consistency of starts on the right, both the full-back positions look set for rotation under Manuel Pellegrini and, whilst Martin Demichelis may tempt some at 6.0, there are question marks over the Argentine’s security of starts amid reports that the club are closing in on a move for Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala.

Coming in at 6.0, Luke Shaw is the costliest candidate in the United defence under Louis van Gaal. The left-back delivered just a single assist for Southampton last season but, perhaps with the possibility of a 3-4-3 formation under the Dutchman in mind, FPL have handed us a dilemma over the new arrival. Granted, there are cheaper options available in the Red Devils’ rearguard but, if he’s handed a wing-back berth, an opening schedule that pits United against just one of last term’s top 10 in the first eight fixtures may bring him into our plans.

Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel (6.0) is also dearer than any of his defensive team-mates. It’s understandable, given that the big centre-half grabbed seven goals for the Reds last term, with his aerial threat in the box from dead-ball situations coming to fruition time and again. Heavy investment in the Liverpool defence is still questionable, however, with Brendan Rodgers’ side shipping 50 goals and claiming just 10 clean sheets in their title chasing season.

Spurs pair Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker also set you back 6.0 apiece. The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino bodes well for their defensive prospects – the new man in charge led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the season gone by; seven at home was supplemented by eight shut-outs away, more than any other side on their travels. Pochettino’s penchant for attacking full-backs looks promising for Walker, whilst Vertonghen’s five goals in 2012/13 serve as a reminder of his attacking potential. The downside, though, is that a number of Spurs defenders are priced at 5.0. If Danny Rose can nail down the left-back berth (potential signing Ben Davies is also 5.0) or the likes of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul or Vlad Chiriches can cement a start in the heart of the back-four, they could offer us better value should Walker and Vertonghen fail to deliver the anticipated attacking returns.

Anyone have any news on a return date for Libor Kozak? Think he actually could be a very nice cheap player if he had regular starts.

Far far far too expensive at the back. You are always going to be benching an expensive player.

      Shaw>Mariappa
      Ward>Chambers/Shackell
      Cameron>4.0 e.g Duff

Then maybe even Snoddy to Shelvey and you have a lump of cash to play with.

Aguero to Dzeko to free up 2.5

Seems like the main issues revolve around the big teams:

    Sanchez, Ramsey, giroud
    Fabregas, hazard, costa
    Mata, Rooney, Rvp
    Yaya, dzeko, aguero

Most people will have 2-3 of those forwards and 2-3 of those mids as their premium players.
    What is the perfect combo??

For me, I can immediately erase yaya, aguero (both too expensive for their fixtures) and Ramsey (too expensive for my taste and with so many weapons up front for arsenal can't see him do it again).

Also for me with all the question mark over Rooney and LVG I think it's safer to go with Rvp.

That leaves me with choosing 1-2 strikers out of costa giroud dzeko
And 2-3 mids out of Sanchez mata fab and hazard

Do we know enough about the Chelsea mid formation and effectiveness now? Where exactly will fabs play? Near matic or more advanced? Will hazard score less points due to fabs? It's a problem. What we know for sure is that Costa is miles better than any other Chelsea striker and should enjoy that creative midfield. Let's choose costa and ignore fabs and hazard until we know what's going on.

So, we are getting closer - we have Rvp and costa - now we choose 1 striker from dzeko, giroud, and 2-3 mids from Sanchez mata - hey wait a second - we only have 2! Great - let's see again:

    Sanchez, mata
    Rvp costa

Now just giroud or dzeko or someone else - if we have Sanchez doubling up with giroud with mediocre fixtures is too much IMO (yes we double up mata and Rvp but they have amazing fixtures) so let's cover city with the very reliable source of points named dzeko.

Ok our work here is done:

    Sanchez mata
    Rvp costa dzeko

Now go and choose the rest of your team 🙂

Would love to hear different logic or maybe support to my thought process - as I feel this is the key for the initial team.

      I've gone Rooney over RVP.

I don't understand this "RVP is LVG's golden boy" think. They're both Dutch - that's where it ends. He didn't receive any special treatment in the Dutch squad.

      i like the thought process.

there is no right or wrong and realistically, you are not going to judge the performance of your picks over the season, but over the first 3 weeks leading into a wildcard.

therefore i would be tending to back proven quality rather than new signings, hence i would prioritise Hazard/Fab over Costa. Sanchez has been doing it for Barca who are quite similar to arsenal in playing style so i think he will slot in fine from the start.

whatsmore i think Chelseas first 3 (particularly their first 2 which is where bandwagons are formed) are better than Utds first 3 (bearing in mind chelsea are a better side). hence i'd rather double up on Chelsea than United

      so for me
      Sanchez Haz Cesc
      RVP Dzeko

    Lost on last page:

OK so considering wildcarding after 3 games and setting my team up for those first 3 games to begin with.

    Advantages:
    - hopefully gets me off to a good start
    - set my team up for fixtures post GW3
    - no need to take early hits as wildcarding early
    - I will be wildcarding after the transfer window shuts
    - I can watch which players are performing, cheap defenders playing etc and jump on the, after GW3
    - take advantage of price rises and build value in the int break

    Disadvantages:
    - loss the flexibility that comes with a wildcard

So given I always wildcard early due to a poor start and injuries etc if I actually plan it this time and base my team on the first 3 GWs it might help.

    Thoughts?

I wish they had changed the Bonus Points more drastically, removing/minimizing the BPS reward for goals scored. There's no need for double reward. If they feel goals are undervalued then they should increase the actual points return not the BPS return. Or perhaps automatically award 3 extra points for a hat-trick of goals or a hat-trick of assists but without impacting on the bonus points given to the Modric-style players, who also put in impeccable performances but don't necessarily reap the attacking returns.

Also offering 5,3,2 and 1 points instead of 3,2 and 1 would make choosing a player with good overall play stats as important as choosing a midfielder who can score, which I think is the minimum they should offer.

Personally I would nearly double that again, offering 8-10 points to the POM, so that if you captain a player that is on form and has good play stats, you won't be punished if the opposition keeper has a good day. This would also open the possibility of captaining a player who has never scored and probably never will. Regular double points returns from players like defensive midfielders and goalkeepers would be an intriguing way of balancing the points across players opening up more differential options.

Strikers have opportunities to score double figures every game pre-bonies. Keepers only have this option if there's a penalty and they save it (unless your Howard/Robinson etc). Why double-reward attacking play? Triple all the BPS but keep the 8 BPS for goals scored or remove it altogether.

Disagree completely. If your player scores 2 goals or more, you should rightfully expect 2+ bonus.

I agree completely goals should be rewarded, but the bonus points system should reward players for good play that's not as tangible as goals, not double reward goals. I have mentioned the option of increasing the points return for goals, but suppose a player comes on in a game that's 2-0 in the 70th minute. He replaces a striker that has had 11 shots on target but has been unlucky scoring only once. The player who replaces him is fresher and so gets lucky against a depleted team and gets three tap ins in 20 mins. Total of 3 shots on target, but that player is still likely to reap higher BPS per goal than the other striker who I think should be rewarded for his greater efforts as he had a bigger impact on the game, scoring a more crucial goal than any of the substitute's goals

    Are you taking:
    A) 3 big hitters in MF (eg. Hazard/Fab, Arsenal MF, Silva/Mata), 3 big hitters in ST (that means guys like Dzeko, Giroud are your 3rd choice STs).
    B) 4 big hitters in MF (Instead of two 5.0s, you take someone like Eriksen) and 2 big hitters in ST (and someone 7.0 or less)
    C) some other combo.

Right now it's B for me, though I am trying to find a way of getting 4 big hitters in MF and 3 big hitters in ST.
