Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Premium Defenders

Having examined the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders and Mid-Price Defenders, our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List continues this morning. This time around, we consider the merits of the premium priced rearguard options for the campaign ahead:

Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both come in at 6.0 on the back of a season which saw the Gunners deliver 17 clean sheets (11 at home and six away). Serving up 157 and 155 points respectively, the pair both notched twice and notched 20+ bonus points but while their security of starts once again looks unquestioned, the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle offers us a cheaper alternative. Priced at 5.5, the Frenchman looks set to replace compatriot Bacary Sagna a right-back and, given that the latter made 34 starts last time around, it seems Debuchy would be guaranteed security of starts for the campaign ahead. The downside is a penchant for picking up yellows – Debuchy was booked 12 times in 46 appearances for the Magpies.

The situation at Chelsea is an intriguing one. Jose Mourinho’s side produced 18 clean sheets last time around and look poised for significant investment once again, though the arrival of Filipe Luis places a degree of uncertainty right across the back-four. At 6.0, Cesar Azpilicueta offers the cheapest option amongst the Blues defence after replacing Ashley Cole as first-choice left-back in 2013/14 but Luis looks poised to take over that berth, either forcing Azpilicueta onto the right of defence or back onto the bench.

If Mourinho has earmarked Azpilicueta for the right-back berth, though, then question marks may hover over Branislav Ivanovic’s security. The Serbian is the priciest of all Chelsea defenders at 7.0 and could be shifted into the centre, leaving him to vie with John Terry and Gary Cahill (both 6.5) for game time in the middle. With the keeper situation also yet to be decided, the best route into the Blues backline looks a little fuzzy at the moment, though pre-season should hopefully afford us a window into Mourinho’s thinking.

Seamus Coleman’s outstanding displays in the season gone by have ensured the Everton right-back joins team-mate Leighton Baines as one of the costliest defenders on the FPL market. Both have been slapped with a 7.0 price tag but, in spite of such a lofty valuation, their points potential at both ends of the pitch still suggests they could be worth the outlay. At the back, Roberto Martinez’ side managed 15 shut-outs in the previous campaign, whilst six goals and two assists from Coleman and five goals and five assists from Baines underlines their attacking prowess. With a European schedule also to factor in, we may see more rotation in the midfield areas once again and with the forward role still undecided, the Toffees full-backs may be the most secure route for investment.

Vincent Kompany could prove to be the safest option in the City defence this time around. With the arrival of Bacary Sagna making a significant dent in Pablo Zabaleta’s consistency of starts on the right, both the full-back positions look set for rotation under Manuel Pellegrini and, whilst Martin Demichelis may tempt some at 6.0, there are question marks over the Argentine’s security of starts amid reports that the club are closing in on a move for Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala.

Coming in at 6.0, Luke Shaw is the costliest candidate in the United defence under Louis van Gaal. The left-back delivered just a single assist for Southampton last season but, perhaps with the possibility of a 3-4-3 formation under the Dutchman in mind, FPL have handed us a dilemma over the new arrival. Granted, there are cheaper options available in the Red Devils’ rearguard but, if he’s handed a wing-back berth, an opening schedule that pits United against just one of last term’s top 10 in the first eight fixtures may bring him into our plans.

Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel (6.0) is also dearer than any of his defensive team-mates. It’s understandable, given that the big centre-half grabbed seven goals for the Reds last term, with his aerial threat in the box from dead-ball situations coming to fruition time and again. Heavy investment in the Liverpool defence is still questionable, however, with Brendan Rodgers’ side shipping 50 goals and claiming just 10 clean sheets in their title chasing season.

Spurs pair Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker also set you back 6.0 apiece. The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino bodes well for their defensive prospects – the new man in charge led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the season gone by; seven at home was supplemented by eight shut-outs away, more than any other side on their travels. Pochettino’s penchant for attacking full-backs looks promising for Walker, whilst Vertonghen’s five goals in 2012/13 serve as a reminder of his attacking potential. The downside, though, is that a number of Spurs defenders are priced at 5.0. If Danny Rose can nail down the left-back berth (potential signing Ben Davies is also 5.0) or the likes of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul or Vlad Chiriches can cement a start in the heart of the back-four, they could offer us better value should Walker and Vertonghen fail to deliver the anticipated attacking returns.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Think I would rather play 4-3-3 if you have 2 weak midfielders. Personally I'd suggest getting another half-decent midfielder in, either by downgrading Sturridge (get him in GW4 or so) or by downgrading Sanchez/Hazard to Ramsey/Cesc perhaps.

well, thats my thinking at the moment, I'm not sure Sturridge/liverpool will replicate last years performance with no suarez and champions league to deal with. also bad fixtures for pool and city to start and then when RVP and Rooney both play do they actually score THAT differently? I'm not sure it's worth 2mil, although I guess RVP will get back to his Arsenal self under LVG, although do united have the same level as creativity as Arsenal?

Which Wildcard (WC) camp do you fall into lads?

A: Planned WC for GW 4 after the internationals - build team for GWs 1-3
B: Planned WC for another time (e.g. next internationals)
C: Use it whenever you need it (more often in the first 4-8 weeks anyway)
D: Keep it for the end of the season

I know that it's hard to fall specifically into one these categories but I was just curious if people plan in advance that they'll be using their WCs so base their starting team accordingly OR if it's a spontaneous decision based on the market/injuries.

          Cool, no problem.

I have used it early the last 3 or so years. I can't say I've jumped up massively once i have played it. Only managed to increase my TV by 0.5m over the 2 week international break. I went up the week I played it and then down the week after that.

I still not manage to own Ramsey and Yaya early on. Not sure if that was me being stubborn or if it was them hitting after I played my WC.

          It's not a quick fix.

I just wish the Jan WC was taken away.

increasing TV with wildcard is not just about the international break rises. it's about owning the players that keep going up because they're in form.

Of course. Its just an added bonus that if you play it during an int break you have a week longer to play the market and have the benefit of sorting out International injuries.

The problem is are they two £4m defenders who'll actually play? Similarly, there are hardly a wealth of options for two £4.5m midfielders. The rest of the team does look great though.

Had another tinker and came up with this lot. Thoughts? Really like Sanchez as a pick even though he's unproven in the PL. Have .5 in the bank- thinking I could upgrade one of my 4.5 defs to Vermaelen if he goes to United or possibly to Ben Davies if he goes to Spurs.

    De Gea

    Azpilicueta, Debuchy, Rosenior

    Sanchez, Fabregas, Eriksen, Sigurdsson

          2 keepers - Speroni or Adrian + a rotator.

Nice. I'm considering doubling the United defence. I get the feeling Jelavic could start with a bang. He racked up a decent amount of points from January onwards of last season and Hull's fixtures are tasty.

I don't have enough faith in our defence to double up. Until we get a decent holding mid. I commented so many tines last season about how our midfield just backed off and allowed players space to run into until they got to the edge of our box, and which point it usually let to a goal via long-range (often with a deflection off Carrick) or from it going wide

I'm thinking of doubling based on the assumption that Van Gaal is going to buy a holding midfielder & at least one decent centre back. I wouldn't be doubling up based on what we currently have.

I brought in DDG in the hope that LVG does what he did with his Netherlands side. Take average players and make them into a solid defensive unit firstly and worry about the attack later. I think united will keep many clean sheets this season, especially at home.

Yeah and reckon he'll adapt the formation to suit depending on how tough the opposition are. We could end up playing 5 at the back against the bigger teams. Reckon you're right about the number of clean sheets.

    FPL DEFENSIVE STRATEGIES

I remember in the close season there was a hot topic about this and I and others were adamant that we would stick with our usual strategy of have three rotating uber cheaps, i.e.

Premium Premium Uber Uber Uber (3 way 4.0 rotation)

with one of the three 4.0 ubers playing each week.

BUT...this year there is a real lack of viable 4.0 options - FPL have got their pricing spot on (unfortunately 🙁 )

So, I am thinking of switching my strategy to:

Premium Premium Decent Decent (2x 5.0 rotation) Uber

with one of the 5.0 decent defenders playing each week

The downside is that it means spending a bit more on defence, but you have to move with the times...

    What is everyone else thinking?

The best uber picks emerge through injuries to first choice player...Roenior, Jenkinson, Flanagan...masses of them. I would wait until the death to see if a couple of options emerge, if not then money will have to be spent this time around.

    RMT?
    Pantilimon, Boruc
    Ward,Santon, Kolarov, Cameron, Figueroa
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Nasri, Tadic, Sigurdsson
    Aguero, Austin, Pelle.

Bit of a gamble in saints new boys, and sigurdsson will of course be taken out if he stays at spurs, but if he moves to palace i think he can replicate swansea form.

it's cool a rate should be honest, and i think pantilimon will start as why else would he join sunderland? if mannone starts in all pre season i can just switch them anyway, kolarov started the majority of games last season, cameron started 37 games as well. I agree the forward line is a problem though, but i can't think of many alternatives, i think pelle is worth it just because 50 goals in 2 seasons is mental even if it was in eredivisie.

Not much love for Sunderland... form team going into the close last year (bit like Southampton the year before).

Pick up where they left off?
      Wickham @ 6 anyone?
