Scout Report – Emmanuel Riviere

Alan Pardew continued his summer spending spree last week with the acquisition of Emmanuel Riviere from Monaco for around £6 million. The 24-year-old frontman is the fifth new signing to arrive on Tyneside as the Magpies manager looks to improve his options in the final third after loan signing Loic Remy returned to parent club QPR.

With out-of-contract Shola Ameobi also leaving and Papiss Cisse sidelined for a number of months due to a broken kneecap, Pardew was clearly delighted to land one of his long-term targets:

“This is an important signing because we know that in the striking department, with Papiss (Cisse) injured, we needed to improve that area. We have looked at Emmanuel for a while and we know he will score goals for us. Now we have an offensive line that will threaten the best Premier League sides with Emmanuel, Remy Cabella and Siem de Jong all on board.”

The new boy was similarly pleased with the move, admitting that his move to the English top-flight has realised a lifelong ambition:

“My dream was always to play in the Premier League and so when Newcastle called me, I said yes. I am a striker who is fast and strong, and I score goals. I think my characteristics are good for the Premier League. I love space to run and tire out defenders, and I work for the team. I want to adapt quickly to the Premier League because it is not Ligue 1. They are very different. I will work hard to adapt fast, and to play for Newcastle.”

The History

Born in Martinique, Riviere joined the youth ranks of Espoir Saint-Luce back in 1996 before his performances at the Clairefontaine academy persuaded Saint Etienne to snap him up as a 15-year-old. Handed a first-team debut during 2008/09, he managed nine goals and three assists in 38 Ligue 1 games over his first couple of campaigns before eight goals and 10 assists in 2010/11 caught the attention of Toulouse.

Riviere spent two years at his new club, though his form was hardly prolific – nine goals and two assists from 44 league matches later, he joined Monaco in January 2013. After serving up four goals and a couple of assists in 14 appearances over his first few months, the 24-year-old turned in the most prolific season of his career last term, netting 10 times from 30 appearances in Ligue 1.

At international level, Riviere has represented France at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and scored nine times from a total of 34 appearances.

The Prospects

Versatile enough to also be fielded out wide, Riviere’s fleet of foot is likely to see him play on the shoulder of the last defender in the Magpies’ lone forward role, as Pardew looks for a like-for-like replacement for Loic Remy. With 14 strikes and three assists in 26 appearances on loan last time round, the latter scored at least twice as many goals as any Newcastle player but his subsequent return to parent club QPR has left a huge gap to fill.

After netting just 43 times in 2013/14, Newcastle clearly need bolstering in attacking areas. As Remy and Yohan Cabaye both proved, though, there’s Fantasy potential in Pardew’s squad and the Magpies manager will be hoping that Riviere – reasonably priced at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.1 in the Sky Sports game – can thrive up front after a summer of investment has added a much-needed creativity to the Tyneside team, with fellow new boys Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella looking canny business by Pardew.

Bearing in mind he’s only hit double figures once, there’s a degree of doubt over Riviere’s ability to make an instant impact. To begin with, those seeking to invest in the new-look Newcastle may turn to de Jong, in particular, as a viable option. Purchased as a replacement for Cabaye, the former Ajax skipper is expected to be fielded in “the hole” behind Riviere and arrives in the North East with an excellent record – scoring 10 or more goals in four of his last five seasons (also managing seven in 19 appearances last term), his classification as a midfielder (7.0 in FPL, 6.2 in the Sky Sports game) across the Fantasy games is also of particular interest.

If Riviere can quickly settle to the Premier League, though, he has the potential to flourish amid an opening schedule that smiles fairly kindly on Pardew’s side. Following a testing Gameweek 1 visit to City, Newcastle face just one of last term’s top eight in their following seven matches – with Palace, Hull and Leicester paying visit, and trips to the likes of Villa and Swansea also on their early agenda, his early form certainly looks worth monitoring for those on the lookout for a mid-price option up top.

Had a recent tweak in my midfield to get Silva in for Herrera. I'm happy with this team so far but any thoughts are welcome. Cheers

Subs in brackets and will rotate last 3 defenders:

    343
    Krul / (Mannone)
Cahill / Verm only if Utd / (Mariappa) / (Targett) / (Bruce)
    Hazard / Ramsey / Silva / Davis / (Albrighton)
    Costa / Rooney / Dzeko

Very similar to mine, though I went for Foster rather than Mannone as he allows for better rotation. Your midfield and forward big hitters are the same as mine but I went with Sigurdsson/Austin instead of Davis/Dzeko and have a slightly stronger defence. I'd recommend having Wisdom as he looks likely to start for West Brom who he's joining on loan. I'd get Foster and Wisdom but other than that it looks great!

On the same wave length 7 🙂 The defence seems a bit of a minefield at the moment and I can see myself swapping all of my three to try find the right combo before we kick off. I'm just not sure about West Brom yet to be honest. They could leak goals but I could be wrong. It's the Davis thing which is annoying me slightly, but we was a solid scorer nevertheless last season

Yep. I think they might revert to 433 and generally be less vertical attacking (as AVB called it) and more possession based, and spend ages trying to create chances over getting in behind defences which they could do because of the transition into attack. With just sturridge in the side last season they mostly did quite boring 1 nill wins. I think he'll get injured at some point and then who knows.

Anyone looking at a cheap defence considering the "top" defences never seen to start the season very well? (see Terry + Chelsea last year after the double, Man Utd the year before when everyone had DDG/Federici combo)

Considering something along the lines of:

    Krul, Elliot
    Ward, Mariappa, Chambers, Cameron, Baird/Wisdom
    Ramsey, Mata, Cesc, Eriksen, Albrighton
    Rooney, Costa, Dzeko

Frightening front 7 and can even make 1-2 of the other defenders into 5.0s if Eriksen is downgrade to Tadic/De Jong.

The specific players aren't that important, just to show the spread of money. Dzeko could be Giroud, Cesc could be Hazard, etc. Just been burned the past few seasons by plumping for good defences at the start and them not performing.

    Hello kind folks of ffs,

I am planning on creating a draft league on fantrax. I was wondering if any of you would be interested in joining the league. I am not sure if advertising for a league on here is kosher or not, apologies if it isnt.

For those who don't know what a draft league is it is pretty simple. You form a team by picking players from the list of available players. Each team owner gets one pick per round and it snakes around so for example if player A got first pick on a player and player Z got the last pick in the first round, then for the second round player Z would get first pick and player A would get last. This goes on until all teams are filled. Managers can transfer players among them or from a list of free agents who did not get drafted. Its different from fpl in that one player can be owned by only one team. Thought i'd give it a try.

The cool thing about fantrax is that I we can form divisions and have kind of a promotion/relegation thing going. Also, I can set up my own scoring rules so if people really like the blocked shots or balls recovered scoring system fron WC fantasy then we can do that, or just stick to standard fantasy scoring.

Please only express your interest if you will play. I do not want any dead teams, that would ruin the fun. Although, I am not worried about dead teams, none of us would be here if we didn't want to play 😉

I was thinking of extending the time allowed to pick a player to a few hours (nothing more than a day) so people from different time zones get a chance to pick. If so then I would have to calculate when to get the draft going so managers have time to drop/add players before first gameweek. All depends on how many signup

Yeah the worldwide draft can be tricky. One no-show for whatever reason and it's ruined. Maybe a rule where if your not there within a certain time limit the commissioner will pick in good faitrh what he/you thinks are good choices

I would like to join if it is free-to-play.

Also as a DZ, I think if it is too much to do a draft, we can all send the list of players to you via email or something and allocate players according to the sequence they put them in.

      Eg:

      Manager A: 1. Terry 2. Rio 3. Sanchez
      Manager B: 1. Remy 2. Markovic 3. Hart

And allocate them based on the turn of the manager to picked a player.

This can be used once the Managers missed his/her time given to choose a player.

        It is free to play.

The current system is that if someone misses their turn to pick a player then he/she is automatically chosen the next highest ranked player from the list of players. The players are ranked based on their performance last season I believe

    Begovic/Krul

    Shaw Cameron O'shea (Vlaar Mariappa)

    Silva Ramsey Eriksen Odemwingie (Albrighton)

    Rooney Costa Giroud

Defender rotation should work well keeping in mind that they all are nailed on..

I'm not crazy about a 4-4-2, and you don't even have playable subs. I think you will have trouble jumping on bandwagons once they get rolling. Cut from the defense and add to your strike force.

Yeah good point. But those RMT's aren't really tinkering. Theyre people showing basically the same team as everyone else rather than tinkering and discussing options 😆 I like messing about with my team too. At the minute I'm wondering is it woth having Sanchez or should I ditch him and use the funds to get playing subs. No real options in the 4.0 category

My decision is have sanchez now or hazard. Hazard would allow terry instead of shaw. New signings usually make an impact, as ozil did. Walcott scored plenty on the wing. But Hazard is on penalties ans costa likes to fall over. But i have danny ings would people treat as a disease on here, so more tinkering is maybe tadic out.

I usually try to avoid playing subs to avoid the situation where they gain more points than the playing players.

Only issue with sanchez is i already have arsenal coverage in ramsey and am doubling up rather than opting for chelsea coverage. Sanchez might not do anything for two games. I can see hazard getting a penalty in two games. But..Arsenal have some tough early games where giroud isn't good against big teams and wenger might use sanchez for them...pace up front, and then use the wide spot for a midfielder to dominate midfield,..

The last two season I played, chelsea had a dgw, and so did a few other teams. Basically those who captained benteke last season got a head start, though it was fun to look at the end of the season those who were among the top 5 after gw 1 to see where they were now. Some really slumped. The difference of 50 points can seem massive after just a week though. I wonder what a good start will hinge on this time, aside from the obvious good luck and correct captain.

    Open Controls

The first week is always crucial. It's the time in the season when bandwagons get going and most players who made a team are actually active. As a result, price changes can be pretty drastic, and having the value increase from those players is immense. So like any fantasy season, a good start is having the players that everybody else wants but doesn't have. While other players are taking point hits, you're gaining value and saving up free transfers. Choosing the right captain is good, but not as important. That's my opinion, of course.

Is Costa worth 2mil more than Giroud or is it better to stick with Giroud and wait to see how Costa goes to start the season?
Also I see a lot of people going for Fabregas instead of Hazard when I can see Fabregas playing a deeper Modric type role while Oscar plays in the whole...I could be completely wrong but with Costa to feed up front Hazard could have a seriously good season

People keep saying that Costa is such a risk, but I don't see why. Seems like he's sure to start, and it is much easier to transfer him out if he flops than to transfer him in if the bandwagon starts. I've got both Costa and Giroud, as well as Hazard. I feel all three of them will have great seasons. Not so sure about Cesc, because I don't know where he'll fit in.

The issue is not nailed-on-ness, it's are Chelsea going to score more goals than the rest of the top 5? Liverpool/City/Utd/Arsenal will more than likely score more goals than them as a result of Jose 'I Love 2-0' Mourinho

he got into a fight with Fonte during training last January and he was loaned out to Juve immediately, where he scored only 1 goal in 11 appearances.
