Moving Target – Mathieu Debuchy

After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

a little conclusion. think there are 4 players at danger from the world cup.
    rvp, ozil, oscar and zabaleta.
half due to their excursions, half due to the strength of alternatives for each: rooney, mata, cazorla, fabregas, sagna etc

Any major failings in the below set-up – feel it’s a little too template at this stage.

Think this could be Azpi’s season if he’s at RB, will have Verm if he goes to ManU and plan to rotate Cameron/Taylor all season.

Can’t stomach Sanchez at this point given Ozil & Rambo are available for 1.5m less.

    0.5m in the bank
    Krul (Elliot)
    Azpi, Davies/Vermaelen, Cameron, Taylor, Chambers

I'm not so sure, stats seem to say Luis managed 0 goals and 2 assists in 32 league games for Athletico last season.

Any reason to suggest he'll get a different brief from Jose this season?

very good especially with money left over, and don't see any need for it elsewhere. Not a fan of 4.5x3 rotation personally, but at least one of them should start well and rise in value.

Is Alexis Sanchez Worth The Money?

Okay, so using my formula on the previous page, which can be found here:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/07/22/moving-target-mathieu-debuchy/?hc_page=11#hc_comment_7629774

I have begun to work out how many points Sanchez would have scored last season (roughly) and how this compares to the points he would be expected to get, to be worth the money, which was around 220. Of course, this isn't accurate as it was in another league, another team, different players and different oppositions, but it gives a decent idea.

If anything it shows the minimum he can do, at Barca he was an understudy to the likes of Messi and Neymar, where as at Arsenal he will be near enough the main man.

He started 27 games last season, 27 x 2 (points for playing 60 mins) is 54.

    He made 7 substitute appearances, 7 x 1 is 7.

    He netted 19 times over the season, 19 x 5 is 95.

    He assisted 10 times, 10 x 3 is 30.

He was booked 3 times, so thats -3.

His goals and assists were almost identical to that of Yaya's, therefor I will use his BAPs as an idea of what Sanchez would have possible scored. Yaya scored 34. So thats another 34 added on.

    54 + 7 + 95 + 30 + 34 - 3 = 217

So, he would have scored roughly 217 points in the PL last season. Personally, at Arsenal, I expect him to better that.

For him to be worth the money, he would need to score around 220 points. This looks a likely target given the predicted points over last season.

The verdict: Sanchez is worth it, as long as he hits the ground running.

Of course, it isn't just about who scores best over the whole season. They will both have patches where one is worth more than the other, its about owning them at the correct time. I would recommend having both Sanchez and Hazard, this post was for those who doubted his worth or considered the likes of Ramsey instead.

I think he is worth it but I disagree with the assumption that he will necessarily do better at Arsenal. My reasoning is that at Barcelona he played in a 4-3-3 rather than a 4-2-3-1 so was more forward, Barcelona are a better team and the quality of the league is lower so they hammer quite a few teams with 4-5 goals (more goals for Alexis) and, finally, he wasn't exactly understudy to Messi as he spent a lot of the season injured.

This table shows his position and how well he performed. I believe it is in all competitions, however it does show he spent most of his time on the wing. When Walcott is back, he will be more central. This leads me to believe he will spend half the season wide and around half in the centre. This increases his appeal for me.

I know there are some weaker sides in BBVA. However, his stylish and skillful play will be too much for some less experienced or older players in the prem.

        Position---- -----------------Apps----Goals Assists
        FWR (Forward - Right)--32 ----17 ---------10
        Sub (Substitute) -----------11 ----2 -----------1

also I think any calculations of this depth, season-long, are pretty pointless at this stage. It'll be clear whether he's worth it after a couple of games. What matters isn't whether you start with him or without him, it's whatever you do you keep/sell at the right time.

I know. Regarding captaincy, it is easier to exclude it as it makes it a whole load more confusing, if you take it into account the fact you will captain him on several occasions, where he will rack up the points then he count outscore the '220 minimum' (if you like) score by far.

Perhaps also consider that most teams would have had their hands full with Messi and Neymar…freeing up space for him (just guessing). We may find that this happens but where he is creating the space and allowing someone who runs in late (like Ramsey) to nail home the advantage. Haha…I love pre-season speculation.

I have him currently in my team btw...

Question mark over Cameron and Chambers' playing time - better to downgrade one to a 4M and upgrade the other to a more certain 5M?

MF is almost identical to mine but I am avoiding Chelsea players until line-up is clearer - Fabregas may play deeper, hurting his scoring potential? Fabregas to Silva or Nasri might be a safer bet for now.

The Lads on Touré League - £50 Prize.

I did submit this as an article, but I wasn't aware that the site can't promote prize leagues.

I started playing FPL in the 12/13 season, I made a team and forgot about it. Last season I thought I'd give it a go and I ended up being addicted throughout the whole season! It was this time last year that I came across this site, and immediately became a member. What Mark has achieved here is incredible, let alone all the cool members things. (Anyone who isn't a member, I strongly recommend you sign up, it's not much.) I now come on the site everyday, without fail, and post for most of the day. With the community being so fantastic and helpful over the past year, I thought it'd be nice to reward them! So as it's my 1 year anniversary as being part of the community, I'm offering a £50 Amazon voucher to the winner of the Lads on Touré league. I'll be in the league, but of course I wouldn't count myself as a winner. Also, if there's any doubts on who wins (i.e. There are joint winners or the person who wins doesn't come on the site at the end of the season) then I'll let the community decide on what to do.

agree. with Doosra, you're going to have to state the terms of a tiebreaker from the get go.

I run a money league with 20-25 friends and colleagues, the first season I did not set things like a tiebreaker for gameweek wins (we had a pool for weekly GW winners) - it was messy and people weren't happy.

subsequent season I added multiple tiebreakers and even a disclaimer to state how the winnings will be split if still a tie.

Can I just get an opinion, because I'm confused. Ivanovic held down the RB position all season, but now it's expected he loses that starting position to Azpilicueta who never at any point in the season dislodged him. Regardless of peoples opinions on those players, ultimately we can only follow Mourinho's choices.

Why is it so obvious Ivanovic will be dropped at RB?

It's not obvious at all. Just a combination of speculation and herd mentality. Can't see Ivanovic budging from the starting XI personally except in "easy" games when Azpi will give more width/threat going forward.

coz Mou loves Azpi and will be a starter either at LB/RB.

Felipe signed for 16+M with 3 years in his legs would be a starter too at LB as per many pundits here..

Ivanovic is nailed on, he'll either be playing RB ( as long as mourinho thinks terry's fit enough for CB role) or replace terry (probably later in the season, or if JT loses form)

All speculation and just opinions. I'm of the opinion that Azpi is a starter for Mourinho and will be for years to come. He's a natural right back and will be even better for them on that side. Luis has surely been bought to take the left back spot. I think Ivan will play some games at RB and some at CB this season.

The three will rotate for sure. Remember, when Azpi was at LB we never had anyone to oust him from that position. Had Cole stepped up, well he may well have knocked Ivan out of that slot. Ivan may well have knocked Terry out for some rotation or even Cahill.

Fact is we can rotate and play players according to the fixtures / strategy and that's new for us this season. I would say that out of the 3, Azpi is almost certain to play the most short of losing form. Ivan to rotate at RB/CB and Luis to be used more selectively…as he grows accustomed to the league.

It's just my hunch though…I think Ivan served us well at RB but he's not one, even he says that and I think we can now offer him the chance to compete at CB.

If anything I go the other way round. I find a squad more important at the starter. Nearer the end of the season I spend as much as possible on the starting 11. you'll find some players take off or team sheets are not what you expected. You'll be forced to take point hits because of a lack of a full squad.

Any good 4.5 strikers? Looking to use the money in my 3rd striker slot to upgrade any positions to premium players in case players like Costa, Sanchez and Fabregas come good. Is it a good idea? I chosen to start save with RVP as it provides me and easy option to downgrade to Rooney and a solid captain pick. My attack force is as follows

        Hazard - Eriksen - Ramsey - Arnautovic

        RVP - ? (4.5) - Dzecko
