Projections & Rate My Team Are Live

The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area earlier this week. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may remember as a guest on the ScoutCast.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies recorded last year with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections at least every other day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate my Team was used extensively by last season’s Fantasy Premier League winner, Tom Fenley. Next week he’ll be posting a two-part article guiding you on how he set about using the tool and other members’ area features to help him over his triumphant season.

Memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

I persevered and even though I only finished 12th out of 20, I thoroughly enjoyed my climb from 18th to 12th in the last few weeks...

Trying to balance the team w/o heavy hitters like RVP or Sanchez or Yaya or Sturridge.
I feel having overall balance and coverage of teams is likely to rake in more points week in and week out.The heavy hitters will bring in the occasional 20+ points but over a period of time it will average out with a balanced approach as a TEAM.
Rather than jumping in the bandwagon from day 1 I feel we should wait for a few matches and judge their worth.

    Here's my first draft:
    Mannone/Speroni
    Shaw/Davies/Ward/Chester/Cameroon
    Haz/Mata/Gerrard/Lamela/Ward
    Giroud/Dzeko/Pelle

I have taken a few risks with Lamela and Pelle but my heart says they are going to have a breakout season with Lam in the hole and Pelle will easy into the Pl with the fixtures.
Also another big risk I feel is I have no coverage in Arsenals fab mid but I think if Giroud can find his touch in the pre season it is worth it.

    Your thoughts much appreciated 😉

Well I was thinking of rotating the captaincy with HAZ and Mata with their initial fixtures.
And in the mean time the big guns show up and I can realign in the first 6 weeks.

Hard to realign anything. Prices go crazy, especially if you see a player that you wanted and he'd done well. His price will go up

It is a risk and but I fell its worth taking as not all the big hitters will start firing from day 1 and drafting the player in form @ higher price is better than gambling from the beggining

Try to go for points at the beginning. Giroud probably won't score against CPL, they put 2 banks of 4 around the 18 yard box, so hard for a striker to score like that> Ramsey is my guess for goals in that fixture

Giroud scored against palace last year, (away at palace, if I remember correctly).
But that may have been pre-Pulis, so it does not really count when analyzing this year...

Has anyone considered that if Chelsea score more goals this year, then their defenders will get fewer bonus points?
For 0-0 or 1-0 games, defenders can reasonably expect to be the highest bonus point scorers. But for 2-0 wins, things are more dicey. The scorers take most of the points, and defenders are lucky to get 1 bonus. Unless the defenders get goals/assists, they can forget about bonus points.
With Fabregas and Costa added this year, will Chelsea still be eking out 1-0 wins?
In addition, with the changes to the Bonus point system, there will be fewer insrances where bonus points are shared.
CHE def will certainly be a good source of clean sheet points, but don't expect Terry to get 29 bonus points like last year.

      Game time, yes...

Starts, no... unless he loses (or doesn't gain) form...

Quite a genius move by Jose, actually... Costa knows if he doesn't hit the ground running that Drogba will be sniffing around for his spot...

With Torres (and possibly Lukaku), that fear just isn't there...

Yeah. There was a guy who made a team a few years ago with something like 9 QPR players and 6 West Ham players.

    Krul Mannone
Debuchy Cameron Vlaar (9.0 left for last 2 spots)
    Mata Hazard Arnautovic Siggy (4.5)
    Rooney Dzeko Studge

Feeling ok with this. Any major holes?

Kinda similar to what I've been toying with.
The problem (and this is self-criticism, too) is that with almost 30m spent on strikers, the midfield is really not that strong. Arnautovic & Sigdursson may not really be playable every week.
I'll probably get Debuchy, but later on in the season. Arsenal'opening ~8 fixtures are not terrific. For 5.5m, a ManU defender is a safer bet for thd start of the season.

For the first half of the season:

    CHE - MUN - TOT/ARS defense?

    OR

SWA/NEW/SUN/WBA/STO five-way rotation for the first half of the season?

Second option would enable Yaya - Sanchez - Hazard in midfield and RvP upfront.

      Meh... Whatever?

Essentially you're asking the age old backline question:

      Heavy Hitters vs. Cheap Rotation

Everyone has an opinion; no one's got the answer as the science on the subject is spotty at best.

My *answer* is just go with whichever line up makes you more happy when you look at it.

This is Fake Footy after all, have some fun! 🙂

That 5-way rotation looks great on paper, but I'm not totally convinced...

It would allow for some crazy fire power upfront though, which should of course (on paper) alleviate any losses you'd take in defensive points...

Tough to know the true balance of it until it happens... obviously... 😉

Which makes it more of a risk... and too much of a risk for me...

Apparently, there aren't many cleansheets at the start of the season. Most big teams concede, but get tighter at the back as the season goes along. Could be rubbish though

Statically speaking more than half of all CS are kept in second half of the season.

        Closer to a 40/60 split.

This is something I think Chelsea have done over the past few years - but just a vague gut feeling and no stats to back it up.

    Did start with
    Krul / Mannone
    Rose / Debuchy / Azpi / Sagna / Bruce
    Eriksen / Fabregas / Sanchez / Tiote / Albrighton
Rooney / Diego Costa / Jelavic

got some feedback and am now on

    Krul / Mannone
Vlaar / Debuchy / SHAW / Sagna / Bruce (or any other 4.0)
    Eriksen / Fabregas / Sanchez / Nasri / Albrighton
Rooney / Dzeko / Remy or Pelle

Any thoughts on better or worse or where to go next...

Sagna isn't a good pick I think....Zabaleta basically owns the RB spot. Get a 5.0 defender or 4.5 and you'd have .5-1.0mil to play with. Which means Remy van be Giroud or Bony....or Nasri can be Silva/Mata. Lots of possibilities

Drogba is 36 and people are worried about him taking game time from Costa yet considering owning Costa. I'm worried about that line of thinking.

Targett now a realistic 4.0 option given Chambers is moving on?

Any nailed-on 4.0m defender is going to be rapidly rise in price this year, with a lack of available options in that bracket.
