Projections & Rate My Team Are Live

The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area earlier this week. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may remember as a guest on the ScoutCast.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies recorded last year with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections at least every other day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate my Team was used extensively by last season’s Fantasy Premier League winner, Tom Fenley. Next week he’ll be posting a two-part article guiding you on how he set about using the tool and other members’ area features to help him over his triumphant season.

Memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

He had half a season before that at Southampton; might take a few months work at Spurs

Also... consider the history of Spurs managers... it's like that restaurant location where every restaurant that tries it fails.

I made a tally of its suggestions against my own for the first 10 or so games. It was about 30 points down on my own picks and then I stopped for some reason. I'd just use it after that if couldn't decide on a captain. I know some people swear by it though.

i don't like it and the main reason i don't like it is it's probably good. but where is the fun in it? sure some people probably need it and/or want it but i enjoy knowing a bit about each player and team and having my own opinions and sub-conscious ratings based on those.
i'm not saying everyone who uses it would take it in word for word (or number for number), sure many just use it as a guide or another voice to weigh up against their own, but i find it a bit robotic. prefer to shoot from the hip and be able to blame only myself if it goes badly, or praise only myself if it goes well

Liverpool have signed Remy, Origi and Lovren (probably confirmed Monday as most have gone home for the weekend). Last try for Moreno next week. Then, if that fails, it's time for Liverpool fans to get really depressed as they'll likely waste money on Ryan Bertrand. Mourinho doesn't normally like to make his rivals stronger, but he wouldn't be here, he'd technically be making Liverpool weaker.

i think he can hit 200 but not 240 or whatever it was. everything just went too perfect last season. i'll throw something controversial out there too, i think you can be lucky for a whole season. i think he'll flirt with 200 as he's a quality player in a dirty rich team with a first choice penalty taker who has lettuce for hamstrings. over 20 again though from a box to box role at best*. no way jose.

*if the fernando signing means yaya attacking mid then why not. i just can't see that though, seems a waste of having 4 strikers and silva

So, this is how things are lining up at the moment:

    begovic, 4M
    shaw, cameron, taylor, mariappa, coloccini
    hazard, mata, eriksen, puncheon, wanyama
    rvp, dzeko, giroud

    I am toying with:

    SUPER-DUPA PLAN TO IMPROVE DEFENCE

    a) giroud --> pelle, cameron --> huth, mariappa --> ward
    b) rvp --> rooney, coloccini --> terry
    c) all of the above!

I think these moves give balance to defence, without impacting my strike force too much. However, I am pretty keen on keeping rvp and concerned about a lack of arsenal if I just get pelle.

    HELP!

    RMT hates the PPG stars!

Thats the only real limitation with the model Chris has developed, which to be honest is pretty impressive. But it does mean that certain player will be artificially underrated by the system due to their chance of playing being low.

In what way? If they match the bookies then its fairly effective. I believe the method is vastly different to the ticker, and takes into account the specific match.

My issue would be that I dont think it accounts for changes in manager or style. And relies heavily on the past performances.

If an injury occurs or a player becomes nailed on, the numbers get updated.

    Mannone (Myhill)
    Luis, Debuchy, Cameron (Ward, Upson)
    Hazard, Ramsey, Aranautovic, Sigurdsson (Albrighton)
    Sturridge, Rooney (c), Dzeko

think you might want to downgrade a striker and upgrade a mid

    Schmeichel (krul)

    Shaw GJohnson Rio (Wisdom, Chambers)

Fabs Sanchez De Jong Mata (Albrighton)

    Rooney Pelle Dzeko

Really pleased with this but worried re no RVP. Thoughts?

I think GJ is rumored to be going to QPR... were you wanting double QPR defense?

      Mid is good

      Forwards are good

RVP will make somewhere else in your team weaker which could be just as worrying

Heard that rumour too......don't want double QPR but do want him at Pool (if he stays) as he dribbles a lot which will help with bonus

he's been a bit *ash for 50 caps yet a profitable fpl player for 2 seasons despite not having a decent striker to feed or full reign on penalties. essential i doubt it, but a leading option i'd be very surprised if not

I'll likely downgrade him in GW3 to whichever 9m option is firing. I'm bound to need the extra 1m for something anyway.

      What Reedy said.

I'd want a Chelsea attacker for those opening couple of fixtures and would rather have tried and tested Hazard for less and in a less vital position than Costa.

    Yaya Eriksen Siggy Ramsey
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

    Krul Wisdom Albright Bruce

Ben Davies is 5.om, great value.

debuchy is over-rated - 5.5m is not that cheap for a card magnet with average fixtures.

      sanchez instead of yaya

Would you honestly have Sanchez ahead of Yaya .. A think we are just hoping Yaya doesn't do well .. in all seriousness a think he will be diffrence again this season

      Curtis Davies?

Your bench is shocking. Might not be too much of a problem if you foresee yourself wildcarding fairly early. Wouldn't want that bench for too long though - you may have to fall back on it at some point.

If you are planning on wildcarding early - there are better picks than the likes of Debuchy and Yaya who both have toughish opening fixtures.

      Nicely balanced though.

Foster will let you down and also get injured without doubt (last two seasons he started 30 games then 24).
Watch out for Eriksen he may play left wing (might not be an issue for you)
Don't like Siggy but thats personal
Not sure about Costa either looks a risk to me
