Moving Target

Moving Target – Patrick Van Aanholt

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet finally ended the search for a new left-back last week by snapping up Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea. The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a four-year contract and is the Black Cats’ fourth signing of the summer, following Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon to the club:

After completing his move to Wearside, the Dutchman revealed he rejected other suitors in order to stay in the English top-flight and was quick to talk up his attacking intentions for the season ahead:

“I had a couple of offers from different countries but the Barclays Premier League is where I want to be, I want to show everybody what kind of player I am and what I am capable of doing. I am a left-back who likes to go forward and I like to take people on. I will also try to get some assists but I will do my defending first because that is where my role starts, it is all about helping the team and I think I will do a good job.”

The History

After progressing through the Den Bosch and PSV Eindhoven youth systems over a period of four years, Van Aanholt was snapped up by Chelsea as a 17-year-old back in 2007. Despite a seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman played just eight times for the Chelsea first-team (delivering a goal and assist) and was mainly farmed out on loan by the London club after failing to displace Ashley Cole in the starting XI.

Spells at Coventry (20 appearances, one assist), Newcastle (seven league outings), Leicester (12 games, one goal and one assist) and Wigan (four appearances) between 2009 and 2012 afforded Van Aanholt little opportunity to establish himself as a regular, though.

A temporary move to Vitesse Arnhem in January 2012 finally helped him settle down and, over the course of two-and-a-half seasons on loan at the Dutch club, he finally found his form. After serving up two goals and five assists in 46 appearances in his first 18 months, Van Aanholt’s attacking forays came to fruition last season, where he produced five goals and five assists in 38 matches over all competitions.

At international level, the raiding left-back has represented Holland at youth level on 26 occasions, scoring once, whilst he’s also turned out a couple of times for the senior side.

The Prospects

With the versatile Phil Bardsley and on-loan Marcos Alonso both departing the club over the summer, Van Aanholt looks set to be handed a regular role at left-back for the Black Cats in the season ahead.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, a price of 4.5 seems likely, whilst a cost of just 4.4 in the Sky Sports game makes Van Aanholt one of the cheapest first-choice defenders around.

Analysing his stats from last term, the Dutchman’s attacking displays bode well – a total of 52 shots over 29 appearances equates to 1.8 attempts per game, whilst in terms of creativity, he averaged one key pass per league match. Bearing in mind that Alonso registered 1.6 shots and created 1.1 chances per match during his loan stint, the Dutchman looks a like-for-like replacement for the Fiorentina man.

In terms of defensive prospects, Poyet’s arrival clearly made a significant difference to Sunderland’s resilience. After conceding in every match under Paolo di Canio, the Wearsiders managed 11 shut-outs in the remaining 31 league fixtures (six at home and five on their travels) and, with their backline options so kindly priced, many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Black Cats ahead of a schedule which pits them against West Brom, QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the opening seven Gameweeks.

With an average of 4.9 points per game under Poyet, though, it’s difficult to look beyond Vito Mannone as the best value route amongst Sunderland’s defensive options. The Italian’s heroics between the posts have already earned him over 13% ownership in FPL – the sixth most popular keeper – though if Poyet decides to alternate Mannone with Pantilimon as his number one as the season unfolds, Fantasy faith in Van Aanholt may take a turn for the better.

Planning or making a team set up to Wildcard in a certain week isn't worth it imo.

We all know that the only reason why we Wildcard is either because all our picks have been shit or 5 players get injured, and we've been forced into it. 😉

I don't think I've ever played my first WC and been happy with the date that I ended up using it. Sometimes it just ends up causing more problems.

    Hi All,

    Just thought I'd try contributing to the site that I've followed and gotten a lot from for the past year. I've been doing some research on Fabregas specifically to see whether the parting comments made by Barca about his contributions faltering in the latter half of the season were correct. The stats seem to prove their assertion, the stats below are from the league only;

Total Goals Total Assists Before Jan Goals Before Jan Assists
    Barcelona
    2013/2014 8 13 7 (87.50%) 9 (69.23%)
    2012/2013 11 11 5 (45.45%) 9 (81.81%)
    2011/2012 9 8 8 (88.88%) 5 (62.50%)

    Arsenal
    2010/2011 3 11 3 (100%) 7 (63.63%)
    2009/2010 13 15 9 (60%) 10 (76.92%)

    TOTAL 54 48 36 (66.66%) 36 (75%)

The percentages in the brackets show how much his "before January" contributions are to his overall contribution.

From this I would say that whilst we don't know what his role will be in the Chelsea he still has the ability to produce strong returns worthy of his 9m price tag. I'm actually looking to double him up with Hazard. If you do have him in your team I would definitely monitor him and look to offload him around January time especially considering that he's used to a winter break for the past few seasons.

    Thoughts?

hey, got stuck at end of last page,
Pls rank from Best to Least these 4.5 Def:

(all 7 seem to be the most likely to start); imo this order? (fwiw, the bonus pts from e/one last yr are in parenthesis from last yr)

    1--coloccini (11)
    2--oshea (16)
    3--rosenior (12)
    4--ferdinand (6)
    5--mariappa (4)
    6--vlaar (13)
    7--wilson (11)

**i left bruce, wisdom, cameron, Upson, Targett out as they seem not to be nailed at this pt.
**my other 2 starting 3-5-2 def are :BDavies - Jones (im planning on having 2 4.0 def in bench such as target, bruce)

    Ah the memories...

Two years ago I went into the season playing 3-5-2 with Benteke (6.5) and Lukaku (6.5) and kept them for the entire season....and a midfield to die for from day one.

36 goals between those two forward...sheesh.....

Posted my RMT on here to hoots of laughter including a nice "MY GOD IS THAT YOUR TEAM" from Optimus...

This season I can see a mass of unproven forwards new to the league who are being somewhat sidelined as wait and see picks...and plenty advice to do just that...My advice...Go with your gut feeling...

Got Austin to, see him as a bargain as he has the potential to be a 10+ goal man which is great for a 3rd striker. Remy will probably play with him considering Harry is thinking of going 5-3-2

Bent is 0.5 more expensive than the others, so you shouldn't consider him with them. The way I see it is, you can go for Vaz Te or Zamora as absolute bench fodder if you play wit 1-2 strikers. If you buy Bent, you have to think you might use him at some point. Would you?

Are you not nervous about having no representation from the best attack in the league(statistically)?

I think nasri & dzeko are super bargains at 17.0 combined price... And with needed injured & doubts over a guest, they're both nailed on its.

I see 9 points & 9 goals scored from their first 3 games.

        Not nervous at all.

Dzeko is definitely not nailed on. And there is too much rotation in City's midfield, plus both Nasri and Silva are injury prone. Why not have Mata instead who's playing in the hole and is an absolute bargain for 9mil?

Not overly fond of him, he's competent, and can get better, but he's at an age now were all I can see is him making a career for himself as a decent LB at a mid table club. I'm guessing you're asking due to Liverpool's interest though.

The main issue I see with Caulker is you have to play him every week to catch his goals. That is risky.

Davies is safer from a play every week perspective.

    Hi Folks,

Can anyone update me on the "Sanchez situation"?

    1. Is he an Arsenal player, he is on FPL however there is speculation he hasn't got a passport, a NI number or more importantly a work permit.

    2. With that in mind which is the best combination (a) Fabregas and Sanchez OR (b) Hazard and Ramsey ??

Don't worry about that first part, he plays for his national team so he'd easily get the work permit, and Hazard and Sanchez sound ideal, just because they'll spend more time in and around the box IMO.
