Scout Report – Jefferson Montero

Swansea boss Garry Monk continued to restructure his first-team squad last week with the acquisiton of winger Jefferson Montero from Mexican side Morelia. The 24-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the sixth new face so far, following the arrival of Lukasz Fabianski, Bafetimbi Gomis, Marvin Emnes, Stephen Kingsley and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Monk was quick to emphasise that the speedy Ecuadorian will add new weaponry to the Swans’ attack for the campaign ahead:

“We have watched Jefferson in depth and a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make the deal happen. He has a lot of quality and with the attributes he has he adds another dimension to our game. The ideal situation for me is that I have different types of players in the same position because in a game I may need to use a different approach. Jefferson certainly offers us something different, and I’m really happy he is here.”

The History

Montero progressed through the youth ranks at Emelec before making his senior debut in 2007. Two goals and 22 appearances later, he was on his way to Independiente in Ecuador’s Second Division and, after a brief loan stint with Dorados (five matches, one goal) he proceeded to net 19 times in 37 matches for his parent club.

Signed by Spanish outfit Villarreal as a 20-year-old, Montero spent his first year with the club’s B side, where 10 goals in 32 appearances led to his promotion to the senior squad in time for the 2010/11 campaign. His time in La Liga was far from successful, though. Farmed out on loan to Levante (11 appearances) and Real Betis (a goal and three assists from 33 matches), he subsequently turned out on 20 occasions for Villarreal, delivering a couple of goals and three assists, before he was sold to Morelia in June 2012.

Over a couple of seasons with the Mexican club, Montero’s output was fairly modest. The wide man chipped in with 14 goals and 12 assists in 65 appearances across all competitions before Monk made his move last week. On the international scene, Montero has already been capped 43 times by Ecuador and found the net on eight occasions.

The Prospects

The Ecuadorian’s arrival puts real question marks over the pitch time of Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge out wide, as Monk looks to put his own stamp on the Swansea first-team in his first full season at the helm.

Handed a permanent deal after steering the club to safety last term, the former centre-half introduced a slightly more direct approach than predecessor Michael Laudrup and resultantly saw his side notch 1.8 goals per game over his 14 league fixtures in charge, compared to 1.2 under the Dane’s guidance.

Whilst Montero’s blistering pace certainly fits in with Monk’s approach, the return of fellow midfielder Sigurdsson to the club should ensure the Ecuador international remains off Fantasy radars ahead of the season kick-off. As mentioned in the recent Sigurdsson Moving Target article, the playmaker averaged 5.7 FPL points per game during his first spell with the Welsh outfit and has immediately found his form – bagging a brace in his second debut, he’s also been handed dead-ball duties and, coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (the same price as Montero) has the potential to be a real bargain.

It should be noted that Montero has also impressed in pre-season, shining in the recent 2-0 win at Exeter, with Monk again underlining his pace as a key factor…

“I think Jefferson showed glimpses in that opening 45 minutes at Exeter of what he can do. He’s great…Pace always hurts teams. Anyone who’s quick and has got half a brain about them can cause people problems. Jefferson’s got very good pace and quality about him as well. And for a player who’s so young, he’s got experience as well. The World Cup’s been a great experience for him. If he can bring the momentum he’s got from that into the Premier League it’ll be great.”

Such comments suggest that Montero will immediately be central to Monk’s plans for the new campaign, cementing him as a differential ahead of a kind opening schedule for the Swans. Currently owned by just 0.3% of FPL managers, the winger welcomes Burnley, West Brom, Stoke and Newcastle to the Liberty in the first seven Gameweeks and also faces a trip to Sunderland during that period. While there is clear early promise, Montero will need to excel over a consistent period if he is to oust Sigurdsson as the major source of Fantasy points in Swansea’s midfield.

It's not an official game so goals don't count in the history books. It seems obvious that any three goals would count towards a hattrick but I was wondering if there is a rule that says it's the first three that count

    Evening all.

What are your thoughts on this lot? Any feedback much appreciated.

    Krul / (Foster)

    Shaw / Luis / Chambers or 4.5m / (Wisdom) / (Davies)

    Sanchez/ Mata / Hazard / Siggy / (Davis)

    Rooney / Giroud / Austin

    Some thoughts of my own...

Sanchez to Ramsey (or even Sterling) allows for a decent amount of cash to be reinvested. With a bit of tinkering I could get in Costa for Giroud.

I have Chambers pencilled in as my 4.5m defender. Reckon Wenger may surprise everyone and instal him as first pick. If not it will probably be Cameron (STO).

Giroud could easily be Bony or Dzeko. I have no City coverage but fancy Giroud at the mo.
Although after Sanogos performance I wouldn’t be surprised if he loses a few starts to him.

Ive got a fair bit invested in defence. But I like it!

I have a similar front 7. I would love to do Austin to Costa

        Sanchez/ Mata / Hazard / Siggy / (Albrighton)

        Rooney / Dzeko / Austin

Even doing Hazard > Fabregas it still means 4.5 defenders all round.

      Car crash.

The inspiring defensive promise of QPR, Spurs, VIlla and WBA.

      Azpilicueta Debuchy + 3x 4.5 = 25.0 - That's about as cheap as I'd go.

Not seeing Courtois in many RMT's. Is it too risky with Cech in the mix?

I've gone with him. Mainly because I think he is the most secure Chelsea option. Cech will likely be off

not sure it's too risky, just wondering if he'll make enough saves to hold on to the extra clean sheets enough

Hey folks, any thoughts on this team? Decided to not go for Siggy and sacrificed a little bit of strength up front.

    Krul - (Gilks)

    Debuchy - Bavies - Cameron - (Chester) - (Wisdom)

    Mata - Ramsey - Fábregas - Sterling - (Albrighton)

    Jovetic - Sturridge - Giroud

A lot of talk/RMT's involving Chelsea defensive options. They are pricey but are they "essential" as some have been saying? I've summarised some of last seasons statistics because frankly I needed convincing myself and maybe a few others would like some pointers.

    Clean Sheets: 18/38
    Home: 10/19 Away: 8/19

At a first glance 18/38 over the season is fantastic - almost half of their games. It is also (possibly coincidently) telling that 9 of those clean sheets were gained after Nemanja Matic signed in January. The stand out area was away from home against other big sides with no goals conceded at Arsenal, City, Utd or Liverpool. However, don't necessarily bank on the same against the lower sides - in successive games they shipped 6 goals in 2 games against Stoke and Sunderland and also came unstuck away at Newcastle, palace, villa and Everton and were held on numerous occasions. In essence it seems that the law of averages says 1 CS in 2 over the course of the season but prepare to be surprised at which games those points occur in!

And as for the nailed on predicament....
Looking at the players individually, involvement last season was as follows: Terry (16 CS) Ivanovic (16 CS) Cahill (16 CS) Azpilicueta (13 CS). Ivanovic actually had the highest minutes played followed by Terry and Cahill was quite far back although David Luiz was also involved last season. Personally I think they'll all get rotated giving us even more headaches (don't forget Zouma is there too). The only thing I would say is that Ivanovic is the most versatile which surely goes in his favour and JT is club captain and without Lampard at the club who else would Jose trust with the armband? I have a sneaky suspicion Courtois might be the cup goalkeeper not Cech for this season at least.

I notice most people are actually fielding incredibly 'weak' defences barring one Chelsea defender, what's your opinion on that? Is defence almost redundant?
We saw Terry Baines Coleman etc notch up scores better than most midfielders for a fraction of the cost.
People are looking for 4.5's who will play but how many clean sheets or goals will they get? Is it not worth splashing out on defence a bit?

Its interesting you say that because to an extent I do agree and actually Baines who is guaranteed goals and doesn't play in the worst defence in the world is at what for me is quite a low ownership % and yet he is guaranteed to play, takes set plays and as I mentioned Everton defensively were very sound last season. In general people see that predicting clean sheets is a lot harder than guessing if people will score or not. Actually if this were true choosing rotating pairs of 4's and 4.5's is criminal - clean sheets are largely going to be random regardless of home/away and fixture difficulty. Its difficult though because short of choosing two bench fillers for 4m and not playing them ever you can't really choose 3 big defenders.

The only pointer I would add on Everton is that if you are choosing purely for defensive returns Jagielka or Howard at 5.5 are better picks but if and some teams do have Mirallas or Barkley in the team I'd find myself asking why am I picking these two over Leighton Baines? For what its worth Seamus Coleman is horribly overpriced

I agree with you on Coleman and with Baines taking so many set-pieces he's almost a must, I'm just seeing those early fixtures and it scares me, however I'm sure Everton got clean sheets against big teams last season?

Actually the point you made about Chelsea's clean sheets last season is interesting, they were good at parking the bus against 'dangerous' teams.

All in all I'm pretty much stumped...Mariappa or Baines?

It seems a ridiculous choice but when it means Puncheon or Nasri... 😛

Everton were pretty solid all season 15 clean sheets overall. Going with Baines you can almost accept not getting a clean sheet here and there if he can chip in with assists or goals instead every now and then. Trouble is you can't go Chelsea and Baines in defence its just too expensive imo. Interesting the choice you have I actually like all of the players mentioned for different reasons - Palace of all the cheap defenders these don't worry me one bit about getting clean sheets and Mariappa is the cheapest option and actually if you want attack from them Puncheon is a decent shout although Bolasie is .5m cheaper. I think if Nasri gets game time he will do well as hes had a fresh break over the summer where others might be tired. Tough call!

Yeah I really fancy Puncheon, Adam Johnson. A lot of the 6mil midfielders, I even have a good feeling about Hendo this season (being a liverpool fan) 😀

Then I see guys with Yaya, Hazard, Mata, Sanchez so I scrap my team and start again!

Onto version 10 at least now
