Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

        I'm pretty set on Caulker, a United defender and Ward. I could get Luis and 4m instead of Dann and Clyne but if I want Terry I'd have to squeeze 0.5 out of my attack.

        it gets me thinking about a possible double Stoke / double CPL defence set up with Bego in goals.
        
        Swans rotate well with Stoke, CPL with QPR. Therefore a back line of:
        
        Bego
        
        Huth, Ward, Dann, QPR 4.5, N Taylor
        
        should produce some very attractive line ups should it not?

Is anyone going with both Moore/Wasilewski to jump on the right nailed on 4.0 defender? I've been on a lot of Leiester forums lately and 99% of the people on there consider Upson to be dead wood. I'm seriously considering it...I went with both Clyne/Chambers last year and it worked a treat 🙂

    I don't think it is about the fixtures anyways. I just need someone at that price who is nailed on. Most are going with Wisdom as their 4.0 defender, so I don't think the price fall is an issue

      I don't know if I agree with that analysis.
      
      Chambers was behind Koscielny, and more importantly, behind Falcao. So the goal was partly due to Koscielny not staying with Falcao, and partly due to Chambers playing Falcao onside and partly due to Falcao's great movement.
      
      Chambers is a great signing, though, and has an excellent match.

    Very tempted by Sanchez though. I follow Barca and Sanchez played really well there and also during WC. His conversion rate is Yaya-esque as well.

Do people ever stick to their planned rotations?
Seeing some fairly convoluted plans (see insies above as example)
Once the season starts do these plans just fall apart leaving a messy team?

Very rarely do the opening weeks have much in common with our expectations,
Templates are generally torn up and wildcards activated.

Better to just concentrate on picking the best team for gameweek one and trying for a
Fast start than worrying about planning very far ahead

  Mine worked last year, but obviously there are few changes along the way.
  
  But I got to say the later the season, the easier we can stick to our planned rotations especially on defense because everything is clearer then.
  
  I agree on the short-term vision though. I plan only for the 3 GWs, but with half an eye on defensive rotation just in case I don't have to WC by then. 😉

  I have both as well. They have strong fixtures and Pochettino says he once to play attacking football. Arsenal, Liverpool, and City players cost more and have worse fixtures.

0.5 still in the bank to play with. I'm not too fond of my keepers at present, but I do like having 2 playing keepers. May swap Mariappa or Wisdom too if they're not looking like playing.

Only 2 heavy hitting mids but I really fancy De Jong and feel I got a solid defence out of it too.

    Gibbs is an interesting call alright just think Debuchy looks more assured to play.
    
    Yeah the keeper situation isn't great but Krul has a tasty few opening fixtures and I think both are really well priced. Considering getting Speroni instead though, but Mariappa was a placeholder there.

  Have a sneaking suspicion that Arnautovic will be the better GW1 pick than Siggy...would make that change with your extra funds I think. Also been saying it over and over again, do not get Mariappa - he will not be starting for us by the end of this transfer window. TP will buy someone to force him to the bench.

    Cheers mate. I may go Speroni/Ward if that looks to be the case. I dont fancy Siggy too much GW1 myself, but with all the options at Stoke I feel Arnie wont be as influential there as Siggy will be at Swansea. Also siggy is a beast when he gets gametime.

Hey guys,
I'm considering some options for a second team with special rules. After the "only players who changed clubs" team, very exciting but born to fail, I'm now considering a "mid-price players" team with the following rules:
GK - Max 5.0m
DEF - Max 5.5m
MID - Max 7.5m
FOR - Max 8.5m

After some thinkering, I had so much cash left that I altered the rule to allow one "Marquee Player' per line.
The team looks actually pretty cool !
GK: Begovic - Fabiansky
DEF: Cahill - Debuchy - Evans - Ward - Caulker
MID: Hazard - Henderson - Valencia - De Jong - Sig
FOR: Rooney - Giroud - Dzeko

It will give me a lot of flexibility as no sub is total crap, and my captain choices will be easy.

What do you guys think ?
Any other special rules or restrictions that are fun to play ?

    Maybe but there are advantages too:
    - no cash in the bank is frustrating
    - the excitement of having 3 very expensive players (that you might not be able to afford in your first team)
    - if i have cash left ITB, that would push me to buy more expensive players when a cheaper one could be a better solution.
    - Financial restrictions are fun when you do your transfers. Without the Marquee Players, I can choose any cheap player.

    I tried to build a team with only french players or players who played in Ligue 1 but i just couldn't find enough nailed on players, especially at the back.

Currently working on my defence. In general:

A) EVANS - 5.0 - 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.0 (always bench one of the 5.0s and the 4.0)

vs

B) EVANS - 5.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 (with two rotation pairs)

  Completely depends on your picks. Rotation is key, whether it is 2 out of 3 every week or 2 pairs of 5.0 and 4.5.
