Moving Target

Moving Target – Romelu Lukaku

After bolstering his midfield with the signings of Gareth Barry and Muhamed Besic, Roberto Martinez’ third signing of the summer was a real statement of intent. The Everton boss broke the club’s transfer record fee by snapping up Romelu Lukaku for £28m from Chelsea, with the 21-year-old arriving at Goodison on a five-year contract:

Having acquired the young Belgian on loan last term, Martinez was delighted to bring Lukaku to Merseyside on a full-time basis:

“Welcoming Romelu Lukaku back to Everton on a permanent basis is the news that all Evertonians wanted to hear. We know that Romelu is still a young man and the potential that he has is quite unique, and we are desperate to see him enjoying his football and to watch him grow as footballer in the years to come. The arrival of Rom is more than just a signing, it’s the fruition of a lot of hard work to get the player we wanted. This is a big moment for Everton’s history and the perfect way of getting the squad ready for the start of the season.”

The History

A product of the Anderlecht youth academy, Lukaku made his first-team debut back in May 2009, less than two weeks after his sixteenth birthday. Despite his tender years, the striker was quickly installed as a regular the following season and, taking the Belgian top-flight by storm, racked up 15 goals and five assists in 25 appearances. The following year Lukaku maintained his predatory instincts, producing 16 goals and seven assists in 37 games, including play-off matches.

After scoring twice in two league appearances at the start of the 2011/12 campaign, the six foot three forward was snapped up by Chelsea before the closure of the summer transfer window. Lukaku found it impossible to establish a place in the first-team, though; he was handed just a single start in the league, with a further seven appearances coming courtesy of the bench.

Farmed out on loan to West Brom in 2012/13, his Premier league potential was all too apparent – 17 goals and seven assists from 35 matches (20 starts and 15 sub appearances) fired the Baggies to an eighth place finish in Steve Clarke’s first season at the helm. Lukaku returned to the Bridge last summer but the arrival of Jose Mourinho made little difference to his chances of game time. After playing just 40 minutes of Chelsea’s first three league matches, he was snapped up by Martinez on a season-long loan deal and, with a security of starts as the Toffees’ first-choice forward guaranteed, proceeded to deliver 15 goals and six assists (or nine in FPL) over 31 league outings.

On the international stage, Lukaku turned out at youth level on 10 occasions for his country, scoring twice, and, after being handed his senior debut back in 2010, has netted 10 times in 33 appearances.

The Prospects

The arrival of big-money signing Diego Costa, allied with the return of old favourite Didier Drogba, made it perfectly clear that Mourinho was unwilling to place his faith in Lukaku for the season ahead. Despite allowing Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o to leave the club, the Blues also have Fernando Torres as a third forward and, as the Everton new boy acknowledged, he was simply not prepared to face another year on the Stamford Bridge periphery:

“Chelsea is a big club and sometimes it is difficult for young players to come through. I want to have a good career and I didn’t want to spend 10 years on the bench, I wanted to make the best out of every year. This is a club with a lot of ambition and the right place to be. You don’t have to have regrets in football. Choices have to be made. Roberto Martinez will be one of the top managers in the world and for me to work under him now is the best thing that could happen for me.”

The move is undoubtedly a positive one for Fantasy managers ahead of the new season and hands us a proven Premier League forward to consider at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 8.8 in the Sky Sports game. At a time where many other options in the same price bracket have question marks over their security of starts, Lukaku’s game time under Martinez suggests he could, once again, be a solid option for our three-man frontlines. The Belgian started 29 of the 31 matches he was available for at Everton last term – his two sub appearances were due to a lack of match fitness on his debut and a return from a brief ankle injury. Whilst the club’s European duties could see the Toffees boss rotate in the attacking midfield areas, Martinez’ line-ups towards the end of last term shows that he simply has no like-for-like replacement for Lukaku as the lone striker and, injuries aside, it’s hard to see him being benched.

Despite scoring 32 times (and earning 327 FPL points) in his last two seasons in the Premier League, Lukaku is, for some, a frustrating Fantasy option. Mainly, that comes down to his inability to deliver big points hauls – only twice last term did he manage to net more than a single goal, suggesting that he’s yet to make the step to potential captaincy material. A lack of spot-kicks is certainly part of the issue and with first-choice Leighton Baines, at 7.0, delivering 160+ points from defence in three of his last four years at Goodison, the left-back has proven the better value option.

Nonetheless, Lukaku cannot be ignored. This time round, he’ll start the season in familiar surroundings, meaning there’ll be no need to adjust to new team-mates or tactics – potentially a crucial factor. For all the calls of inconsistency, Lukaku’s stats underline his capabilities. Despite playing 2,726 minutes last season, he was still sixth amongst forwards for both shots (101) and efforts inside the area (68), seventh for key passes (35) and, more significantly, second only to Luis Suarez for shots on target (45) in his first season on Merseyside. If he can improve last term’s conversion rate of 14.9%, Everton’s record signing could finally be set to step up as major Fantasy asset next time around.

With Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the first seven fixtures, many are content to overlook the Toffees’ assets and search elsewhere until the schedule improves around Gameweek 8. It’s worth noting, though, that the Toffees beat three of those above-mentioned opponents last term and, having produced two goals against the likes of Man City and Liverpool, in addition to a goal and two assists against Arsenal, Lukaku has also shown that, under Martinez’ guidance, he’s more than capable of picking up points regardless of opponent.

How to create your very own rotation spreadsheet with ease.

I have never seen this strategy posted before on this site, and I've just discovered it, and I personally love it. Of course however, I have seen people post about changing the numbers in the ticker, but not like this.

    1) Head over to our very own season ticker on the site.

    2) Click on the 'fixture difficulties' tab.

    3) Put a 1 in each of the fixtures which you want to highlight in both the home and away categories. For example, if you want to highlight just the home games you'd put a 1 in their boxes.

    4) Put a 0 in all the away boxes.

    5) Now all the home games are now blue, whilst the away fixtures are in white.

Another use could be for fixture strength rotation. A 1 would be for all the games where you'd play your defender against and a 0 for all the hard fixtures which you wouldn't want to play a defender in.

I genuinely feel he's become a much less public version of Torres/Soldado in a sense. Sunderland just have an awful team and barely created any chances for him at all last season - I kept a watch on it. He did well in the team he was in before and I really don't think it's him struggling to adapt to the league, but his team's fault for their incredibly poor chance creation. Even Fletcher is only £5.5m, I would have viewed it as a bargain a few seasons ago - now nobody would touch him with a barge pole.

            Cheers for the feedback!

I really want a Spurs defender this season (similiar to the way I was set on doubling on Southampton defenders last season because of their signings).

It's because I'm banking on Spurs to sign Schneiderlin & this new highly rated CB, to boost their CS potential. If that guy is £5.5m, I'll just buy him because he'll be nailed on.

I feel Tadic will perform pretty well this season (really can't resist not punting on him), and feel the same way about Newcastle after their signings.

If Mata's fixtures weren't so good I may have considered swapping for Sanchez but as the fixtures are weighted so nicely for United & Chelsea in the beginning, I'm hoping they give my an early lead over people choosing Arsenal players.

Also hope Newcastle put up a fight against City!

GW 1 & 2 captain will be Costa

GW 3 - 5 captain will be Rooney

The midfield is the exact midfield I had a couple of weeks ago but I mixed it up as I thought every player was a punt (to a varying degree). Currently only have Mata & Siggy left in and weighing up to put eith Tadic or De Jong back in, but might be more prudent to see how they start first.

I like the team on the whole though... except the goalkeepers!

        Cheers!

For Goalkeepers I really wanted to do Foster & Krul to De Gea & Given, but that would mean dropping Mata and his opening fixtures are irresistible for an attacker.

I really think you should take Tadic & De Jong as there are other players you can swap them out for quite easily (Eriksen, Barkley, Coutinho etc).

My midfield reads as Mata, Hazard, Ramsey, Snodgrass, and Siggy at the moment. Might try and find a spare mil or so somewhere in my team to get one of them in instead of Snodgrass cause they both have potential points written all over them...

I do sympathize with your gk predicament, currently the defense and the gk's are giving me the biggest headaches. I think we'll see a fall in clean sheets this year, teams seem to be adopting a more attacking approach (man united switch from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 for example), so not sure how much to invest... or to invest but just invest in fb's.... or use 1 main defender then 2 rotating pairs as opposed to 3 main stalwarts...

          Oh decisions decisions!

            Snodgrass has to go man!

I would look at Ramsey for Eriksen & Snoddy for De Jong.

I think Spurs & Newcastle will be the Southampton & West Ham of last year for CS. Spurs are going to get Schneiderlin and another really highly rated CB from Villareal. Newcastle have Colback & will be a stronger team overall with their signings imo.

de Jong stayed in my team for weeks but, eventually, I got rid for Tadic. He certainly has potential to get goals but his injury record is a real concern. The fact that he's already missing games in pre-season is enough to put me off him for now at least.

Ok, so had to have a reshuffle. RVP not up to speed apparently, so Rooney is in. This leaves me £2m spare. Also doubts surfacing on Shaw. So I'm thinking go to DDG in goals, and downgrade Shaw to a 5.5m (Jags?), then I have the money to get Sterling in for Snoddy who I see as the best value scouse cover? Leaves me with this...:

    DDG
    Debuchy Jagielka Luis (Wisdom Yun)
    Nasri Ramsey Eriksen Siggy Sterling
    Rooney Costa (Bob Z)

Any good. I think I'm there?! Just not sure on an Everton defender that's not Baines or Coleman though?!

Ok guys need some advice on this.
Have tried to make it as balanced as possible with fixtures in mind.

    Krul (Myhill)
Caulker - Ward - Luis (Targett) (Wisdom)
    Henderson - Mata - Erikson - Ramsey - Fabregas
    Sturridge - Rooney (Vaz Te)

Not completely satisfied with Krul and not looking to rotate my keeper necessarily.
Picked Henderson over Siggy due to nailed on starts and I think he may score higher this year.
Also worried about no Man City coverage, Dzeko is a short term pick, Yaya is pretty pricey and not sold on Sagna or Kolarov.

Any help or advice would be awesome!

I'd probably stick with the masses and go Siggy over Hendo.

Good starting 11, but none of your subs are guaranteed gametime for their clubs...which is a huge worry.

Just registered as a member and having a tough time settling on a team but Id appreciate if you could give me suggestions/recommendations..

    Krul/Foster
J Evans, Caulker, Cameron, (Ward, Neil Taylor)
    Mata, Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Siggy,
    Rooney(C) Jovetic (Zamora)

Is it worth downgrading Caulker and Ward to Ferdinand and Mariappa so I can replace Zamora with Bojan?
    Or Dzeko over Jovetic

    Thanks!

You need an extra big hitter in midfield, anyway it is your choice. Baines will only give you points when he scores free kicks or pens. Everton has a tough start so don't hope for many clean sheets

Tinkered a bit. RMT please chaps. I think it's great value for money.

DDG (Krul) Debuchy, Rose, Azpilicueta (Huth, Ashley Williams)
    Fabregas, Ramsey, Eriksen, Henderson (Wanyama)
    Rooney, Remy, Lukaku

Huth & Ashley Williams for the nigh perfect Stoke/Swansea fixture rotation. Wanyama because of his price, as a bit of a punt and because I fancy him to do a bit better given the departures at Saints.

    Thoughts? /10?

    Thanks!

I was running Fab/Hendo/Yaya/Siggy/Sanchez with Rooney as a lone striker and Weimann and Jutkiewicz on the bench, despite both being starters for their team.

I kinda prefer this though on account of Lukaku. I'll be livid if Sanchez blows up though...

I think there's too many question marks next to your players.... I wouldn't be happy with either Henderson or Wanyama in my team. I also wouldn't have Remy in my team till his future becomes a bit more clear. Remy's future isn't clear, not sure if Azpilicueta will start, Lukaku has a tough start to season, Fabergas is in a new team.....

On paper it's a pretty good team, just maybe look to take a few of those question marks out.

    my defence currently looks like

    Debuchy, Shaw, Ben Davies

Im looking for 2 cheap rotation players to fill in the last 2 slots.

I will only put them in the first team, if one of my three is playing a top 4 club,

Was very close to changing my stubborn stance on Ramseys fantasy output this season but after watching his goal highlights from 2013/14, I'm sticking with my stance and don't think he can replicate his form.

Most of his goals came from 'right place right time' instances; which may be translated to him having good positioning and making good runs. He only had a number of really good shots and headers that lead to goals but the majority weren't; his finishers weren't great by any standards and he was gifted a large number of goals purely based on how arsenal play. Yes he's definitely improved through the season and you could see his growth in confidence clearly increased his performances.

Yeah I know highlights don't tell the whole story but I'm sticking with my guns and steering clear.
