Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Erik Lamela

Our pre-season series returns to gather up a collection of players who carry the weight of expectancy going into the new campaign. These are targets who are expected to kick-on and grow in stature over the course of the coming season and it begins with a suitable prospect down at the Lane: Tottenham playmaker, Erik Lamela.

Snapped up by Andre Villas-Boas last summer after the departure of Gareth Bale, the Argentine arrived amidst much fanfare after finishing the 2012/13 campaign as fifth top scorer in Serie A, with 15 goals and five assists in 33 appearances for AS Roma.

It’s fair to say that Lamela failed to live up to the hype in a hugely underwhelming debut year. Over the course of an injury-hit campaign, he managed a total of three starts and six sub appearances under both Villas-Boas and his replacement Tim Sherwood. In those 361 minutes, the South American mustered a mere eight attempts on goal and created just six chances for others.

After a similarly difficult start, fellow new boy Christian Eriksen found his feet as a result of Sherwood’s attack-minded approach. The Dane served up seven goals, eight assists and 20 bonus points in his subsequent 18 appearances (an average of 6.4 points per game) over the final five months of 2013/14 to underline his capabilities as a prime Fantasy midfield asset.

So far, Eriksen’s exploits have persuaded over 14% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap him up – the ninth most popular pick so far. Despite being identically priced at 8.0, Lamela’s debut year has clearly proven a major deterrent; just 2% of managers have been willing to bring the South American into their five-man midfields. Despite that, there is growing evidence to suggest that Lamela could potentially emerge to challenge Eriksen’s output and finally live up to his billing as a goal-getting midfielder of some stature.

Key Factors

    • The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino seems to have quickly transformed Lamela’s summer form. With his compatriot at the helm, the Argentine looks a different player and, with three goals to his name, he’s Tottenham’s top scorer in pre-season so far; Eriksen, on the other hand, has relied on set-piece duties to bag his first of the summer in a 6-1 trashing of Celtic. Fundamental to Lamela’s form has been a shift in position – previously utilised out wide, he’s been afforded the role in “the hole” in recent matches and has been far more involved in his side’s attacking forays.

    • Furthermore, Lamela has backed up the idea he’s a confidence player. Despite his lofty price tag, the playmaker (when fit) was never afforded the chance to shine under either of Tottenham’s managers last term and cut a dejected figure on the rare occasion he entered the fray. After a recent friendly match, the South American confirmed he’s finally over his injury problems and is mentally refreshed for the campaign ahead:

“I had an unfortunate injury last season that kept me out of play for quite some time. In the same way, it’s helped me emotionally and morally to get better and work harder towards this season.”

    • Pochettino’s impact on Southampton’s attackers highlights how his high pressing game is suited to the English top-flight. Adam Lallana was transformed into one of the most sought-after Fantasy midfielders in the game last term, earning 179 points in his one full season under Pochettino compared to 93 points in the previous campaign, while Jay Rodriguez scored 152 points before succumbing to knee ligament damage in April. Providing he keeps clear of the treatment room, then, Lamela could be poised to benefit from Pochettino’s tactics and finally become a legitimate Fantasy contender at the second time of asking.

    • Pochettino’s arrival will ensure Spurs move away from the two-man frontline employed by Sherwood from December onwards last season. With a 4-2-3-1 on the cards, then, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding the new manager’s preferred option for the lone forward role to gamble on their frontmen right now. There’s no doubt Emmanuel Adebayor impressed under Sherwood last time, though it remains to be seen whether he possesses the work-rate to lead the line in a high-pressing side, making investment in the midfield a safer route for now. With form on his side, Lamela is staking a real claim for consideration over Eriksen and with West Ham, QPR, Sunderland and West Brom in the first five, has the potential to be a deadly differential over the first few Gameweeks.

    • After last year’s disappointment, it’s easy to forget Lamela’s capabilities. Further assessment of his 2013/13 season in Serie A shows he fired 86 shots – an average of 2.6 attempts per game was bettered by only two midfielders in the Premier League last season, Yohan Cabaye and Philippe Coutinho. Despite being fielded out wide by the Italian outfit, Lamela also chipped in creatively – a total of 56 chances created equates to 1.7 per appearance; on a par with Cabaye and team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor in the previous campaign.

Calling it now, Torres to start one of the first two games on the left wing( or just alongside costa) in place of Hazard. Lack of fitness makes him a no go for me now

On the other hand, aren't Burnley and Leicster good games to get Hazard back to fitness for the game against Everton?

Come on. He's clearly a more attacking option, so he could provide some more support to the QPR forwards. It is entirely plausible that QPR is a better attacking team with Isla than they were with Simpson.

    The Deal with Wisdom

There's a threat that he & Gamboa may fight for time, but that's not today my friends.

So there's several things working in favour of having Wisdom on our teams:

    1. Wisdom has started & played the full 90 in back-to-back matches

    2. McAuley & Lescott are dealing with injuries... Wisdom is versatile & can fill in at CB which means game time.

    3. Gamboa has yet to train since the World Cup & WBA only have 2 more scheduled preseason matches.

    4. The WBA forums have Gamboa playing on the right side of midfield:
    http://westbrom.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=abecb2421c1f70fe6d4900145e9428d0&topic=14003.50

    5. Why would he have been loaned out in the first place, if WBA had designs on signing another player anyway?

On the whole, I feel all of this points to Wisdom being a safe bet for us to have come GW1 & beyond.

Great post. I agree with all of this, Wisdom looks the best bet for a 4.0 and I think your 5th point is the most crucial. With other 4.0 options sitting on promoted sides I am going to stick with Wisdom.

          @Nomar

Q: Do we *ever* have any intention of playing our 5th defender when he costs 4mil?

          A: Nope, probably not.

So WBA's defensive abilities are moot in this discussion.

          Also, you're a member:
Go look at WBA's defensive performance last year. (Shots in the box, Errors etc.)
Certainly not as awful as the narrative here would have us believe, right?

Then go and check their actual injury list and the players missing the rest of pre-season. Wisdom should have better than fair chances to start, no doubt, but what is it worth if its because all of their good defenders are injured?

Also, no need to be Biggus Dickus about it mate!

The value of a nailed on 4mil defender should not be over looked!

Having an extra .5mil working for you in attack, rather than gathering dust every week is quite valuable especially when money's tight!

Anyone else think a separate RMT thread is a bit of a nightmare? I cant afford to look through two threads all the time. I think that RMTs bring discussion and people help when they can. Also wary that some people will just comment anything without thinking it through just to get a reply on their own RMT.

I don't mind RMTs, although I do get sick of seeing them after a while. When that happens I just skim over them, unless it's a first time poster or if it's a poster that I know and respect.

I think RMTs can naturally lead to a more interesting discussion about the particular merits of one player/formation versus another which I assume (perhaps wrongly) will now happen on the RMT thread. If this is the outcome then it may make the people that want a separate thread the ones that lose out overall.

My problem with them is that before the match they make the ofrum run at light speed and cause most of the posts being left unnoticed. And that is a vicious circle, because it makes people repeat their RMT's. It's much better to gather them all to same place. There people can also much easier see if someone has already posted a similar team.

It's a good point you make about pre- deadline match days, I didn't really consider it from that perspective. I love the pre-match amble article but apart from that don't really come on much on a Saturday morning in part due to the reason you outline, but mostly because I prefer to spend time with the kids!

      Bad fpl prospect.

It's just that I have no respect for players who move for wage and not because they love football such as Rodwell or Sinclair. Football should not be dictated by money but by passion, history and loyalty. They both new they were moving to sit on the bench this clearly shows there lack of passion for the sport which means they don't deserve the wage or the opportunity to place.

When Rodwell broke through at Everton he was seen as one of the best young players in the league. the only other CMs they had were Garcia, Yaya and Barry, injury free he could well of broken through into the team. Also it's his job, Everton accepted the bid and someone offered him a larger wage at a club with better working conditions, who wouldn't move. Turned out to be the wrong move but why not go for it at the time.

Seamus Coleman to miss the rest of pre-season with his hamstring injury. Must surely cast doubts over him starting GW 1.

Went to check his FPL ownership, thought it would be higher than 13.4% after last year. Baines on 13.3%. Seems majority can't split them now they're the same price. Has to be Baines all the way though imo

Young will definitely start first game. Lvg has no care for value, history etc... he just wants the best eleven to fit his tactics and always has done. Young had proved that and, barring injury, is certain to start first game. Doubts in United starting eleven are the third centre back after Evans and Jones and the centre mid with herera.

Sterling has been on fire in pre-season and could effectively play as a forward in a 4-3-3 - I'd be more inclined to swap Sanchard for Rambregas then invest the saved funds into your ropey defence.

Zamora is pretty much in the same bracket as a £4m keepr in terms of how much action he'll get.

Its a waste of a very important position in FPL. Use a filler in mid instead and get yourself a striker who will play 60+ mins each week.

Charlie Adam got 8 goals in 1700 minutes last season, when the hell did that happen?

I would just play Siggy every week. Don't get why so many on here are worried about rotating him for "tough" fixtures. Swans very attacking football under Monk, Siggy can do well regardless of opposition.

    Clyne - Mariappa - PVA - Coloccini - Wisdom

22.5m defence I'm happy with. It's not the end of the world if Mariappa or Wisdom don't play, a simple transfer will sort either, allows for a strong front 8

Who's your GK? As a cheap defence goes it looks pretty good but you might regret not having at least one or two premium defenders if your forwards have a bad week.

are you convinced Ward is not worth the extra spend over Mariappa?

    Probably posted already: http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/492162/Mourinho-explains-Diego-Costa-Cesc-Fabregas-Filipe-Luis-and-Didier-Drogba-deals

Looks good for Luis but bad news for Ivan.
