Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Erik Lamela

Our pre-season series returns to gather up a collection of players who carry the weight of expectancy going into the new campaign. These are targets who are expected to kick-on and grow in stature over the course of the coming season and it begins with a suitable prospect down at the Lane: Tottenham playmaker, Erik Lamela.

Snapped up by Andre Villas-Boas last summer after the departure of Gareth Bale, the Argentine arrived amidst much fanfare after finishing the 2012/13 campaign as fifth top scorer in Serie A, with 15 goals and five assists in 33 appearances for AS Roma.

It’s fair to say that Lamela failed to live up to the hype in a hugely underwhelming debut year. Over the course of an injury-hit campaign, he managed a total of three starts and six sub appearances under both Villas-Boas and his replacement Tim Sherwood. In those 361 minutes, the South American mustered a mere eight attempts on goal and created just six chances for others.

After a similarly difficult start, fellow new boy Christian Eriksen found his feet as a result of Sherwood’s attack-minded approach. The Dane served up seven goals, eight assists and 20 bonus points in his subsequent 18 appearances (an average of 6.4 points per game) over the final five months of 2013/14 to underline his capabilities as a prime Fantasy midfield asset.

So far, Eriksen’s exploits have persuaded over 14% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap him up – the ninth most popular pick so far. Despite being identically priced at 8.0, Lamela’s debut year has clearly proven a major deterrent; just 2% of managers have been willing to bring the South American into their five-man midfields. Despite that, there is growing evidence to suggest that Lamela could potentially emerge to challenge Eriksen’s output and finally live up to his billing as a goal-getting midfielder of some stature.

Key Factors

    • The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino seems to have quickly transformed Lamela’s summer form. With his compatriot at the helm, the Argentine looks a different player and, with three goals to his name, he’s Tottenham’s top scorer in pre-season so far; Eriksen, on the other hand, has relied on set-piece duties to bag his first of the summer in a 6-1 trashing of Celtic. Fundamental to Lamela’s form has been a shift in position – previously utilised out wide, he’s been afforded the role in “the hole” in recent matches and has been far more involved in his side’s attacking forays.

    • Furthermore, Lamela has backed up the idea he’s a confidence player. Despite his lofty price tag, the playmaker (when fit) was never afforded the chance to shine under either of Tottenham’s managers last term and cut a dejected figure on the rare occasion he entered the fray. After a recent friendly match, the South American confirmed he’s finally over his injury problems and is mentally refreshed for the campaign ahead:

“I had an unfortunate injury last season that kept me out of play for quite some time. In the same way, it’s helped me emotionally and morally to get better and work harder towards this season.”

    • Pochettino’s impact on Southampton’s attackers highlights how his high pressing game is suited to the English top-flight. Adam Lallana was transformed into one of the most sought-after Fantasy midfielders in the game last term, earning 179 points in his one full season under Pochettino compared to 93 points in the previous campaign, while Jay Rodriguez scored 152 points before succumbing to knee ligament damage in April. Providing he keeps clear of the treatment room, then, Lamela could be poised to benefit from Pochettino’s tactics and finally become a legitimate Fantasy contender at the second time of asking.

    • Pochettino’s arrival will ensure Spurs move away from the two-man frontline employed by Sherwood from December onwards last season. With a 4-2-3-1 on the cards, then, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding the new manager’s preferred option for the lone forward role to gamble on their frontmen right now. There’s no doubt Emmanuel Adebayor impressed under Sherwood last time, though it remains to be seen whether he possesses the work-rate to lead the line in a high-pressing side, making investment in the midfield a safer route for now. With form on his side, Lamela is staking a real claim for consideration over Eriksen and with West Ham, QPR, Sunderland and West Brom in the first five, has the potential to be a deadly differential over the first few Gameweeks.

    • After last year’s disappointment, it’s easy to forget Lamela’s capabilities. Further assessment of his 2013/13 season in Serie A shows he fired 86 shots – an average of 2.6 attempts per game was bettered by only two midfielders in the Premier League last season, Yohan Cabaye and Philippe Coutinho. Despite being fielded out wide by the Italian outfit, Lamela also chipped in creatively – a total of 56 chances created equates to 1.7 per appearance; on a par with Cabaye and team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor in the previous campaign.

      It truly doesn't matter.

Keepers score between 130-150 every year.

Rotation's can work & they can fail horribly... It really just comes down to luck of the draw.

      (Example:
      - If you rotated New & Sun last year you would have wound up with 20 points less than if you'd just played Mannone.
      - A few years ago Krul & Vorm were an amazing rotation that garnered a lot of CS for their owners)

Buy one or buy two, whatever.

Just make sure you monitor who's going well & transfer them in accordingly.

I don't think so completely, Liverpool still have the same core of players, will strengthen their back line and have added an immense talent in Lallana, it isn't to say Suarez won't be missed, he will, but I don't think it's as serious as people are making out, you can hark stats about as much as you like but the focal point now will be the teams effort, not Suarez, other players will now step up. Suarez on an off day could waste chances like they were nothing, arguably wasn't great against the big teams either. Where Liverpool will improve is the pace they'll play at, pinning teams back, pushing up allowing Lallana and/or Coutinho plenty of space to work their magic.

We'll see. Definitely possible, but I fear without that true focal point they could struggle. Agree the back line will be stronger. Also not convinced Lallana is an "immense" talent, think Rodgers paid an English premium for him. All that said, I could be eating these words come midseason! But I'm off Liverpool players for now...

Lallana has been improving season after season, had a great one last season and the season before. To be fair if Lallana wasn't English, people would be saying his price was justified. The focal point will now be the creative players, Sterling, Sturridge, and Markovic are all capable players with the ball at their feet, but they're more direct, Suarez' game was always to slow down play, make passes and break defenses down with the killer ball, Liverpool don't now lack that killer ball, it's just that it will be different players delivering it.

i agree...obviously life without saurez will be hard and he will be missed (one of the best players to ever grace the league) but it wasn't as if no one else was performing last season. sturridge finished second goalscoerer. stevie g had an immense season. sterling was just getting his legs.

BR has been building a squad, not just a one player team....I expect us to push just as much as last season and finish in a similar position. the title could be harder to get this year because we have europe as well but i expect a top 4 finish and to get out of the CL group stage. BR is building a team that will be on top for years to come, not just one good season. I trust him and think he is changing the core how LFC play for the better and for the future

Fair comments. Definitely possible that Liverpool becomes a counterattacking force, but I don't think we can suggest that now that Suarez is gone, 43 goals/assists can simply be replaced by a collective effort.

It will definitely be interesting. I just think they might have a little of what Spurs had last year with "we can't pass it to Bale, now what?"

That said, Rodgers is a better attacking manager than AVB, so we'll see.

I don't think it was ever a case of just pass it to Saurez. Sturridge is very hungry/greedy.

I read an article earlier this week that talked about teams with one high scoring player never won the league. Van Nis was their main example. that when he was at United they didnt win trophies as much even though he banged in 30+ but when they didnt have that killer striker they won leagues...

so i guess its the team vs player...one amazing player will hog hog the headlines and get top scorer etc but a team wins the league. and I think LFC are building that team. I dont think we are ready just yet but we have good young players and a large amount of English players, unlike Chelsea and City.

We have signed a fair amount of PL players vs new players unlike Spurs who were all untested

Spurs went out and bought an entirely new team, they didn't have a backbone, instead AVB went about buying one, with no emphasis on how he wants his forwards to link up. 31 goals and 12 assists isn't unreasonable to recoup, Sterling will improve, Hendo will improve Coutinho will improve and Sturridge will improve, while I agree as of right now Suarez will be missed and we won't score as much we can replace Suarez, not with a like for like player, but it isn't unimaginable to replace his stats.

                  exactly

plus we scored the most goals last season and didn't win the league. so we don't need to match goals scored. we need to defend better. more players will step up now and have a chance to shine. also think how much they learned from Saurez. Not only did he score a lot he tracked back and defended and look at Sterling, he never gives up much like Saurez. Thats the way we started playing, pressuring and always chasing the ball

It was easy to forget that Suarez scored most of them goals from play unless Gerard was off the pitch.

Sturridge is more greedy then Suarez. He might not assist as much be should keep clocking up the goals.

Assists will be dependent on sterling/lalana/gerard/Markovic etc

Hendo is actually most appealing to me, as I think he could get semi-consistent returns for the exact reason your suggest. I just think no matter how talented Sterling is, we have to consider that 11 of his 14 goals/assists were directly helped by Suarez. We're asking him to make a pretty huge leap to justify that price

Yeah, they were directly helped by the front man. There's no denying that Suarez was very good for his development but you can see how confident he is through his work over the summer. I think doing research specifically targeted at how a world-class player leaving a team has biased you mate, you could do the same to any team who has sold a top player over the summer.

Re: your last point, I hear what you're saying, but Suarez is no ordinary world-class player. Third-best in the world for me, and one who plays a very distinctive way. Like even Arsenal w/o van Persie wasn't set to crash and burn, but I'm not sure we can say the same thing here

If Messi left Barcelona I'd see them as struggling to compete for La Liga absolutely and I'd see his absence hurting the players around him. I don't think they'd suddenly get better to fix it, a player like Messi creates a ridiculous amount of opportunities for others just from his movements and passes, not to mention converting a lot of chances that others wouldn't convert.

true....but sometimes depending on one player is a bad thing (not that barca only have one good player) and when is is off form he can ruin a game because he will demand the ball.....

i don't think there is a Saurez replacement out there...but I think we have a good chance to win the league with a good squad, as we did last year with a weaker squad but with Saurez. When he played bad he did waste chances and because of a weaker squad we had less options on the bench to change a match.

Now BR has got a bigger and better overall squad, we can be more lethal with changes than last year when the plan is not working or when the opposition changes their plans...

But a player like Suarez or Messi, as I say, draws people to him, defenders worry about him even off form. I saw it frequently last season, defenders would momentarily lapse and lose Sturridge or another Pool lad making a run when Suarez was making a move and simple as that it was a goal.

I expect Pool to do fine, challenge for top 4 but to win the league is just reaching, not even most of the Pool fans expect that on here so I think you need to readjust your expectations there.

Plus, the squad has not underwent some amazing overhaul currently. Lallana is a good one, he'll do well, Markovic has ability but is neither a goal scorer or an assister, Lambert is a bench player, Can is a decent CM but will see a lot of rotation, Lovren will be an improvement over Skrtel but Agger is better than both of them yet they're going to let him go/leave him on the bench. The squad has improved undoubtedly but not phenomenally by any stretch of the imagination. Now factor in CL matches and injuries.

At the end of the day, I think it's naive to believe that players losing someone like Suarez, someone who in training no doubt exudes quality and is a great asset for younger lads to learn from, won't hurt them. I do believe the squad needed to increase certainly but, even if a few step up (which I expect them to do) you're losing a huge number of goals. Not only that, you're losing an entity, a talisman. And that can hurt a team. Do I think Pool will be in trouble? No, they should do well this season I would hope. Do I think they'll challenge for the title? Not a chance.

I think you can judge everything from pre season

          United are better than Liverpool
Liverpool are better than City (just)
          Monaco are better than Arsenal
Some German side are better than Chelsea

But most of all United are brilliant and Liverpool are rubbish 🙂

Mourinho: "We always felt that Filipe was a very stable player and one which gave us multi-solutions because I can play Azpi right-back and Ivanovic centre-back because of Filipe."

Do people still not believe that Azpi is going to take Ivan's spot at RB?

Azpi and Luis starting at RB and LB in their last 3 games. Comments from Mourinho that imply moving Azpi to his natural position and Ivan to his.

Which implies Ivanovic playing as CB, and someone else being dropped, right? Unless you think Ivanovic's natural position is on bench.

I think he is going to be dropped from his RB position. I don't necessarily think he will be dropped from the team entirely. It's Cahill, Terry and Ivan fighting it out for two regular spots at CB imo.

The key phrase here is "multiple solutions"

      ie.

      Luis, Terry, Cahill, Azpi
      Luis, Terry, Cahill, Ivan
      Luis, Terry, Ivan, Azpi
      Luis, Cahill, Ivan, Azpi
      Azpi, Terry, Cahill, Ivan

Each of the back 4 appears in 4 out of 5 of those lineups and they are all plausible

Mourinho isn't known for his defensive rotation. He likes a settled back four. I believe that the settled lineup he will go for is Luis at LB, Azpi at RB.

It's good to have a flexible back four capable of multiple solutions, especially if you are challenging for the Champions League. That doesn't mean he is going to go rotating his back four every game.

its pretty safe to say that with the addition of Luis, Chelsea have 5 very capable defenders of which only 4 can play each week. Most teams have this and the odds of one of them getting injured and/or rested is very high

Mou likes mind games so we cant trust what he says at all....of course he will Luis is nailed on after he payed so much for him....if we go by Mou then Ivan is most likely to be dropped but i think they will all play in around the same game time

I realise United have a kind fixture list for the first 10 GWs but was really not impressed with their first 45 mins this morning...

Neither Jones, Evans or Smalling look comfortable on the ball. I was thinking of going double United to start but rethinking my strategy now.

They won't come up against the pace of sterling every week but I think the lack of experience is going to tell...

Yeah I've seen the results and I've watched the games but pre season can be deceiving. That first 45 mins was enough to put me off a double defence. All it would take is a high press for that 3 man defence to be exploited. Obviously waiting for the start of the season but I'm not convinced (Liverpool without Lovren are an even worse defensive prospect

I've ended up with Yaya in my side on the basis that if he fails to recapture last season's form it will be easier to downgrade to any other MF as opposed to having to make at least two transfers to get him if he does fire from the off. Anyone else using this tactic?

      24m for the 5

      Wisdom, Cameron, Mariappa, Terry, Naylor.

Could go for DDG/Myhill and Luis instead of Terry.

Any tips for making a great start to the season? For the last two years I've made terrible starts, had to use my WC early and have been playing catchup for the rest of the season. Now at the point where I'm happy with my team, but have been the last two years and ended up around 2 millionth after the first couple of weeks!

Set up your team for the first 3 weeks. If it works, but your team doesn't look great for the following 3-5 gameweeks, either play your WC or take some hits to sort out your squad.
Once you get a 3 digit OR it's actually quite difficult to drop significantly unless you start playing like a muppet

The most basic keys to a reasonable start are:

      1) Pick nailed on players (even the players on your bench)
      2) Pick a core of the players that are 'must-haves' then decipher the value picks from the second-tier clubs
3)Have good balance across the board between defence, midfield and attack
