Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Ross Barkley

A year ago, few Fantasy radars were picking up Ross Barkley as a Fantasy option. The 20-year-old made just two starts in David Moyes’ final year at the Goodison helm but the arrival of Roberto Martinez transformed his fortunes and ensured the playmaker become a key figure in the Merseysiders’ sixth place finish.

Starting last season priced at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Barkley’s goal in the season opener against Norwich fired up an early bandwagon. A further strike in Gameweek 6 continued to see Fantasy managers invest heavily in the budget midfielder but the goals quickly dried up: Barkley scored just once in the subsequent 22 rounds of fixtures before finishing the season with a promising three goals in his final nine appearances of 2013/14.

Key Factors

    • As the season approaches, Barkley has committed his long-term future to the Toffees after signing an improved four-year deal. While the buzz around Goodison surrounds £28 million man Romelu Lukaku, it’s perhaps telling that Martinez decided against scouring the market for a new playmaker – instead, the Spaniard took time to talk up Barkley’s talents after the youngster penned his new contract:

“He is the best young English player I have worked with. When you assess or evaluate a player you always come up with an outstanding talent or something that has made them different. Ross is the most complete footballer which makes him different from the rest. Technically he has got the talent of a player who could be born in probably the best development markets around Europe. He has got the power, pace and physicality you need in the Premier League. He’s like a hybrid of an English player and a foreign player and it’s very rare to find that combination.”

    • In his breakout season for the Toffees, Barkley started 25 times and was fielded as a sub on nine occasions. Bearing in mind he missed a couple of matches with a toe problem, he essentially failed to feature in only two of the league games he was available for. As the season unfolded, though, Martinez was a little wary of his game time and gave him the full 90 minutes just twice from Gameweek 20 onwards but as he matures as a footballer, we’d expect him to be afforded further minutes as he becomes more influential on the Toffees’ attacking forays.

    • His game time may have been managed to some extent last season (averaging 70.7 minutes per appearance) but Barkley still offered plenty of threat in the final third. A total of 79 attempts on goal was still third highest amongst midfielders behind Philippe Coutinho and Kevin Mirallas and underlines his attacking potential. With more time on the pitch, then, that’ll only increase, though there’s no question there’s plenty of room for improvement when it comes to finishing – a lowly conversion rate of 7.6% led to just six goals, three less than Mirallas’ nine.

    • Whilst some may feel a 7.0 price tag is a little steep for a return of 112 points in last year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Barkley – as the playmaker in a top six side – may yet prove good value. Granted, Everton face a tough start but Martinez’ side showed they are more than capable of holding their own against the so-called bigger teams – two wins over United, allied with triumphs over Chelsea and Arsenal underline that their main Fantasy assets can prevail regardless of opponent. Twelve months on from Martinez’ appointment, Everton are now far more familiar with the Spaniard’s possession-based approach and with Lukaku leading the line again, there’ll be no settling-in period required this time round. As the popular midfielder in the FPL game (28% ownership) Barkley certainly has the weight of expectation on his shoulders – if he finds an end product, that show of faith could quickly be vindicated.

I'd love to just be able to say Cameron and Naylor and not have anyone ask about Cameron's nailed-on-ness, because that's obviously the best pair of 4.5's.

Luis is the only proper LB at Chelsea. Azpi and Ivanovic are both right backs that can play in other positions, so their position in the team is most volatile.

Arsenel V Chelsea up front analysis.

    Costa V Sanchez
Former is nailed up front, latter is MID. Both are untried at EPL level. Latter's MID status provides extra CS and goal points.

Conclusion: Costa gets the nod due to fixtures and midfield support. Should Samchez play CF in front of Giroud then the assessment is tied.

    Hazard V Ramsay
Former is only 23 coming off a very taxing WC but is clearly the best dribbler/playmaker in EPL and has pens in his locker. Ramsay is coming off a goal scoring best season but plays in a more withdrawn position and will probably get more defensive attention this season.

Conclusion: Hazard, but be aware of a slow start and some Jose resting which we have not had to deal with before.

    Fabregas V Ramsay/Ozil/Cazorla
The former is proven at EPL level, particularly with assists but may also play more advanced early with Oscar struggling for preseason form. Of the latter two, Santi is probably the more desirable given his light WC and likely position left of the striker. Ozil will be a late bloomer here, however once the fixtures ease he could be a massive shout.

Conclusion: Fabregas. Early fixtures and a potential OOP role at the same price sees him on top.

So how do we separate Hazard from Fabregas?

The latter is fresh, likely to play advanced early and is 1M cheaper.

    Final synopsis:

CFC options are far more worthy in our early teams.

    Fabregas:

Pros - Great fixtures. One of Arsenal's best players this last decade.
Cons - Doesn't play for the most offensive team, might play CDM, Chelsea's attack is way more distributed than teams such as Liverpool or Man Utd. Hazard, Costa, Schurrle, Willian, Oscar, etc. could be getting the points.

Worth it? Nope. Too risky for his price. Going with someone like Eriksen is more reliable because he's more influential to his team.

    Costa:

Pros - Great fixtures. Focus of the team. Mourinho rates him highly.
Cons - Doesn't play for the most offensive team. Injury prone. Only had one good season with Atletico. Yellow Card prone. Price is high.

Worth it? Hard to say. Wouldn't start with him in my team personally.

    Sterling:

Pros - Great 2014 and seems to be improving. Plays for an offensive team. Good Liverpool cover.

Cons - Price is a bit high. Better options around the similar price range (eg. Ramsey, Eriksen and Mata). Could be rotated/subbed often depending on the rest of Liverpool's signings.

Worth it? Depends on the rest of your team!

Do we think that Dejan Lovren signing for Liverpool will encourage a far better defensive display than last season's 10 clean sheets? I have a feeling it may well do and its a little bit far-fetched but here goes; Southampton upon signing Lovren improved from 7 clean sheets the previous season to 15 last season - granted they were a far better side all round and were winning more games but that is a huge improvement and undoubtedly aided the performances of Jose Fonte, Clyne and Shaw in my opinion at least. Another side to this could be that Potchettino is naturally good at setting up sides to concede less goals and be harder to beat which if it is the case then that may bode very well for Spurs this season. Liverpool last season seemed to get so caught up in scoring as many goals as possible and chasing the league title that at times they seemed to forget how to defend (obvious case in example being THAT Palace game) but its not like Brendan doesn't know how to get teams to defend - his Swansea side kept 14 clean sheets in their promotion season, a record which has whittled down to just 8 last season having been 10 the season before.
I think its hard to draw too many conclusions from past statistics - they are just that, but Lovren has an excellent pedigree having champions league experience with Lyon and I feel that Liverpool's gain could well be Southampton's undoing defensively at least.

Liverpool will play more as a team this season with Suarez gone. I expect that we will tighten up at the back because Rodgers recognizes we don't have the same firepower. Lovren probably won't start right away but I can see Liverpool's best partnership ending up being Sakho/Lovren by the end.

Its interesting because actually now I've looked back at same said statistics they actually conceded only 7 more goals over the season and yet were down 6 clean sheets

Yeah at the minute I think he's likely to be in the starters. Although Ledley could be moved to left back and Ward over to Rb.

He's not nailed on but probably holds pole position on the Rb slot.

Really hesitant about throwing my RMT up here as i know its fceking annoying.

...with that said i am going on holerdays tomorrow and this may be my last chance to tinker. So please, let me know what you think.

    Mannone/Krul
Luis - Shawcross - Evans (Wisdom & McCarthy)
Nasri - Lamela - Mata - Sigurdsson (Brady)
    Rooney - Costa - Giroud

    Cheers in advance!

No problem. I think this separate thread idea is ridiculous. RMTs have been a part of this site for years. We're getting too elitist and rule bound. Carry on I say. Anyway...

Haven't seen Nasri for a while so could be a good differential. Giroud may get hauled off if ineffective with Sanchez shifted up front. One to watch I guess. May want to consider a Swansea player to rotate with Shawcross in defence. Foster rather than Krul to be safe?

and it still is a part of this site.
Since the different thread has started ive had way more replys to my RMT's.
It's only a couple of clicks away buddy.

thanks. Worth considering the Swansea option. Yea, i'm still not convinced on giroud either to be honest. But i think i'd rather him than Dzeko. And from what i've read about the arsenal friendlies so far, costa just seems to be feeding everyone around him.

Nasri is going to be awesome this year.

How much were Hazard and Yaya worth near the end of last season? Don't see Sanchez rising much over the season considering he's already 10.5 and selected by 27%
