Scout Scribbles – Wednesday Friendlies Round Up

Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

Yes, I am not getting involved with Sanchez until he does something worth all that cash. I would rather have Yaya for almost the same money, or Ramsey for less - regardless of those other transfers.

To the right area this time.

So, when presenting David Luiz, PSG chairman Nasser El-Khelaïfi told that they did negotiate with Real for Di Maria, but he was too expensive. Or, in other words, Real demanded a too high transfer fee from a club that is under FFP transfer control.

Personally, I have to say that I never ever believed this deal taking place.

It was the player wanting out of Real, and to PSG, and as a result Real was asking waaay inflated price to fund their previous Hamez deal. It was ludicrous that when the transfer was asked by Di Maria, and quite necessary for Real, but not at all planned or needed by PSG, they would get PSG pay whatever they ask, particularly as PSG's transfers are limited by FFP sanction.

The solution that PSG would have sold 2-3 important players to fund it was clearly always made up by Spanish sources. The whole deal never made any sense from PSG's point of view.

I promise you, when Di Maria finally changes clubs (probably to England), the fee will not be as high as £40M, let alone £64M that was now asked.

He's a reasonable choice if you look at it objectively. Good point hauls in seasons gone by, now a potential cheap entry into the United midfield after impressing in pre-season. Will he start against Swansea? We don't know. But unless they bring in a wing back, it's a 50/50 choice. Some are willing to take the risk, some aren't. Fair.

In recent discussions the experts consensus seems to have been that, although Bojan may start well and get a couple of goals, he will almost certainly fade into obscurity a few games in as he has done elsewhere. However, Stokes opening fixtures and his pre-season form are screaming out for attention.

    So I have a solution:

Put him in your team from the start..
Reap the rewards: goals over the opening 6/7 matches, and price increase as everyone jumps on board the Bojan Bandwagon.
Remove from team just before he predictably capitulates, replacing with one of the returning, expensive strikers* whose price will have dropped due to a slow season start, i.e. sturridge/aguero.

    I know. Genius.
    Thank you.

*This may require some significant downgrades of other players in team.

Yeah, but the fans on the palace forum also say things like (AND I QUOTE):

"Adrian M is very lucky to be in the side. He gets caught out on pace many times but is able to foul his way to safety. Definitely knows how not to get booked"

    Pick a combo:

    a) Sterling - Lukaku - 5.0 fwd
    B) Puncheon - Studge - 5.0 fwd
    C) Puncheon - Lukaku - 7.5 fwd (no liverpool coverage)
    D) Sturridge - Davis - Long/Jelly

      I can't even name a 5.0 FWD, so that rules out A and B.

Sturridge might not be around GW1.

      So C.

On the 3-5-2/3-4-3 debate, the point was made that 3-4-3 allows extra flexibility if Sturridge, aguero, and Rooney (or another premium forward) all prove indispensable. That's fair. But what if three or more premium mids prove indispensable too (eg Sanchez, Yaya, hazard). Those with 3-4-3 will find it just as hard to adapt in the latter situation as those with 3-5-2 would in the former.

Don't really buy the flexibility argument. I don't like any of the mid price forwards so am personally going 3-5-2

Reus will leave next summer, probably for Bayern who are stirring up all sorts of trouble by leaking his purported release clause. This was thought to be €35 million, but Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated it as being €25 million. Borussia Dortmund are currently trying to renegotiate the player's contract.

The BBC are flat out wrong on this one.

He did get Lukaku wrong. Said he was nailed on to Wolfsburg. Donald has said that Liverpool are looking into it and he's normally bang on too, so who knows. I guess they could look but he'd just say no. But surely if Dortmund don't want to sell him to Bayern next year for 25, they'll sell him to us for 45 now...

Falcao went to Monaco, no reason he wouldn't go to Liverpool. I don't think it will happen but using club status as a reason why doesn't make sense
