Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Cesc Fabregas grabs a pair of assists as Chelsea overcome Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor. Diego Costa nets on his league debut, while Branislav Ivanovic and Andre Schurrle are also amongst the goals as the Blues get off to an impressive start.

Chelsea New Boys Dazzle in Burnley Destruction
Positioned in the Blues double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas showed that, despite a deep-lying role, he looks poised to play a major part in our Fantasy seasons. The Spaniard pulled the strings for Jose Mourinho’s side in an outstanding first-half display that harvested a pair of assists and the maximum bonus points as he overshadowed the pricier Eden Hazard in the Chelsea midfield.

Up front, Diego Costa continued the momentum that saw him score four times over the summer friendlies. Drafted in by 37% of FPL managers prior to the weekend, the former Atletico Madrid man was second only to Wayne Rooney in last week’s Captain Poll and his predatory instincts will surely persuade more to invest as Mourinho’s men welcome Leicester, Swansea and Villa to the Bridge in the next five.

Schurrle Stakes a Claim
The German’s excellent strike also brings him onto radars as a potential mid-price option. Coming in at just 7.5, Schurrle scored eight times in just over 1400 minutes last season, with an average of 176.4 minutes per goal quicker than any Chelsea player – currently sitting in just 6% of FPL sides, he looks a real prospect if he can retain the role on the right of the attacking midfield three.

Luis and Cech Warm the Blues Bench
Mourinho started last season’s back-four for the Burnley clash as new signing Filipe Luis was named amongst the substitutes, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic fielded as full-backs. Clearly, though, the new boy won’t be expected to sit on the bench every week and it may not be for a number of matches before we get a clear idea of Mourinho’s intentions – there seems little conclusions can be made on last night’s team sheet. Thibaut Courtois got the nod ahead of Petr Cech for the number one jersey, though before the match, the Blues boss added further uncertainty to the situation by stating:

“Thibaut is my number one tonight against Burnley. I don’t make decisions for the season; I make decisions for a match.”

Arfield’s Budget Appeal
The Clarets man was one of only three budget midfielders to get amongst the goals this week, along with Ki Sung-Yeung and Lee Cattermole. Having netted eight times in last year’s Championship, Arfield carries the main scoring threat in the centre of the park in Sean Dyche’s side and, after proving his capabilities against a side that chalked up 18 clean sheets last season, could come into contention as a cheap fifth midfield option.

Hazard / Ramsey / Mata / Siggy (Marney)

0 in bank. Thoughts on a FT? Was thinking Jones>? Just trying to decrease some ManU exposure...already have Mata and Rooney and think that might be enough...want to give Mata another shot

Not until he's up and running and starting games. Still have to see how Wenger fits them all into that side!

I think Ramsey is essential for the season, Walcott is FFS's favourite fpl player, and Ozil could be the one to make it all work.

          Triple up Arsenal midfield? 😆

I think Walcott could be one for the January wildcard. Probably won't be back until October, and I can't see him being that great after 10 months out.

I'm not bothered about doubling or tripling on teams. Is Ramsey a good option? Yes. Is Ozil a good option? Yes. Is Sanchez a good option? Yes. Then get all 3!!

But then that means no Cesc, no Mata, no Hazard, no Silva, no Sterling etc...

and if Arsenal lose one week and fail to score, that's a BIG red arrow.

I have Cesc, but don't want him long term because I don't like his role in the team. Mata isn't a good option IMO, Silva is injury prone and out wide, I think Sterling is a bit overrated on here and will burn out. I have Hazard.

You just have to look at the players individually, if Ozil, Ramsey, Sanchez are better options than the rest, get all three.

My only worry about Haz was his positioning. Just got a little too central, his pace only runs him into trouble there. He's best when out wide and can go either way (oo-er). No doubt he will pick up the pace though.

Most FPL players will just hope that tonight's Champions League 3rd qualifying round doesn't feature any injuries to outr Arsenal assets such as Ramsey. But I feel these two matches against Besiktas can also show us the goalscoring capabilities of Arsenal players early on in the season. For example in last years 3rd qualification round Ramsey scored in both legs versus Fenerbache , showing us that he had the potential to be a budget FPL scoring midfielder at 5.5m. He then went on to show this form on the Premier League. My point is though we should really sit up and take notice if someone like Sanchez or Giroud delivers goals over both legs.

does anyone agree with me on this?

The midfield could be a knee jerk central this season...

There are so many top quality midfielders that at some point every single one will be 'essential' the problem is you have to have them before they boom or you'll have them a couple of weeks and miss the next one.

SILVA/MATA/FAB/STERLING/HAZ/RAMSEY/SANCHEZ/YAYA/ERIKSEN/ and theres probably even more like BRUNT for instance....

This season I feel may reward the one who keeps faith in his midfield he has, rather than the one chasing the guy that just scored a big points haul.. only for the one you just transferred out to get the points the next week.

Obviously playing the fixtures can help, but big midfields get points hauls against anyone.

Thats just my opinion, what do you think?

It's often the case. Whether it is or not this year 1 Gameweek is too early to wet yourself over getting one or another.
If you have injuries or players who will clearly not get game time then it's a different matter and it makes sense to get rid after two or three weeks, in the case of form or place, or immediately if injured long term like Barkley.

With no other pressing issues I think it is a decent move to replace him with other midfielders from sides that has shown their quality. First match showed that United is still struggling.

There's two sides to the coin. We were sold on all all-conquering swashbuckling Man Utd attack, which didn't materialise. There's a fine line between remaining faithful to your original idea and being just plain stubborn.

No I can't agreed with this. As pointed out by the genius above, last week we thought United were good again, but now we know factually that they are still crap. This makes Mata expendable, as there is no way he can suddenly get double figure hauls if United struggle

Right, not going to take a hit, so that leaves me with:

    A) Naughton ---> Clyne

    B) Mata ---> Fabs (not sure anyone's considered this!)

    C) Naughton ---> Ferdinand, Chester (keep .5m in the bank) or Hutton (1m in the bank)

Gonna be offline for the next couple of days soon. Any thoughts???

Neither is Aguero. Obviously Schurrle is not Aguero, but it does beg the question - how nailed does a player have to be in order to have him? When he plays Schurrle is golden FPL wise, averaging almost exactly 7 points per 90m!

        Im very very tempted

    Terry, Clyne (Coloccini/Debuchey/Caulker)

Do not like the look of Liverpools next few fixtures...so strange as it may seem thinking of moving out Sterling to bring in Hazard (did everything but score or assist last night) and think he will terrorise Leciester at the Bridge, ..however would prefer to realise a profit on Sterling any chance of a 2 rise on him pre Saturday ??

+1 Fabragas actually playing alongside Matic infront of the back line seems to allow Hazard more freedom to get forward and lesson the defensive graft the chosen one expected of him last season. So he should both lump in with more assists and goals.

Pulled the trigger on Mata ---> Sterling, potential price fall and rise respectively forced my hand, meant I could upgrade one of my two 4.0 to Kelly, who looks to have some nice fixtures, especially at home.

Maybe not the right time to take a -4 so soon but I had a decent start and it's worth it to not have that nagging at me ...
