Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Nacer Chadli bags a brace while Emmanuel Adebayor serves up a goal and assist as Spurs hammer QPR at the Lane. Juan Mata nets for United and Seb Larsson is in the points again for Sunderland, while Bojan Krkic is benched and James Chester sees red as Stoke grab a point at 10-man Hull.

Eriksen Blanks in Spurs Rout
Spurs continued their early-season form with a 4-0 home demolition of QPR yesterday. A double from Nacer Chadli, allied with a pair of assists from Erik Lamela underlines the growing number of midfield options under Mauricio Pochettino, although Christian Eriksen, with over 12% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership, again failed to get amongst the points. Up front, Emmanuel Adebayor continues to get the nod for league matches and a goal and assist from the Togo international suggests he could yet be the standout candidate in the mid-price forwards bracket.

Dier Does it Again
With Kyle Walker still sidelined and Kyle Naughton suspended, the summer signing was shifted to right-back to accommodate Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs defence yesterday. Dier replicated his goal-scoring exploits of Gameweek 1 by netting once again, and while there’s no doubt the competition for places is heating up at the back, his threat in the box is making it very difficult for Pochettino to leave him out right now. Despite a home encounter with Liverpool next weekend, the bandwagon looks set to continue over the next seven days.

Austin Sidelined with Hamstring Problem
Charlie Austin’s hamstring injury absence allowed Matt Philips to partner Loic Remy up front for the R’s yesterday. Harry Redknapp’s side now have home fixtures against Sunderland and Stoke on either side of a trip to United but with their form has been far from convincing. Austin owners may be tempted by a trade to Steven Naismith – priced at 5.1 to the QPR man’s 6.0, the Scot has picked up a goal and maximum bonus in each of his two appearances thus far and looks poised for continued pitch time – at least until Everton enter the market for new attacking options.

Mata Opens His Account
Sold by over 94,000 FPL managers last week after an opening day blank, the Spaniard picked up the points in United’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland. While Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie toiled up top in a disappointing display by the visitors, Mata’s strike, allied with the maximum bonus points, underlined his potential in the role in “the hole” behind the front two. In spite of an uninspiring display from United, Rooney and Mata owners will likely be persuaded to hold as Louis van Gaal’s side now square up to each of the promoted sides in the next three Gameweeks. Those considering Van Persie may choose to monitor for now, with the Dutchman looking some way short of full sharpness – he failed to register a single attempt on goal before being replaced midway through the second period.

Larsson On the Radar
The Swede provided the equaliser for Jack Rodwell’s strike to maintain his impressive early-season form yesterday. Larsson grabbed a goal and couple of bonus points in last week’s draw at West Brom and has now climbed to fourth in the FPL midfield standings on 14 points. Despite a very kind 5.5 price tag, the Black Cats man currently sits in just 3% of sides right now, but with QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the next five, he could be set for further investment.

Chester Sees Red in Tigers Stalemate
Drafted in by almost 130,000 FPL managers on the back of a 15-point return in Gameweek 1, the Hull centre-half is set to miss next week’s trip to Villa. Chester lasted just 13 minutes before being dismissed for a professional foul but, despite playing most of the match with 10 men, the hosts still managed to pick up a draw against Stoke after Nikica Jelavic opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw. Tom Ince retained his spot alongside the Croatian up front although he was forced to drop back into midfield once Chester was dismissed and was eventually replaced on 55 minutes as the Tigers looked to shore things up further. With West Ham, Newcastle and Palace also still to follow in the next five, Ince still remains a viable budget midfield option if Steve Bruce fails to secure new faces before the transfer window closes.

Bojan Benched for Potters
The Spaniard dropped to the bench for Stoke’s first away trip of the season. Owned by over 16% of FPL managers, Bojan was introduced just before the break as Mark Hughes attempted to take advantage of the 10-man Tigers but he failed to make an impact as the Potters struggled to break down the hosts’ rearguard. With Naismith looking increasingly tempting as an alternative, Bojan already looks on borrowed time for a number of Fantasy managers – with a trip to Man City up next, plenty look poised to part company over the next few days.

nice...put Baines and Ivanovic on there so we can compare the touches in the final third numbers (Generally the most attacking full backs) to compare with.

        Baines way ahead, Ivanovic equal.

yeah. Clyne seems 'the' mid-price defender of choice with Saints fixtures, so an interesting alternative. 🙂

I was referring to the touches in the opponents half/final third Doosra as a comparison to how much those two Soton full backs are getting forward..

Still top for touches in the final third...which is about the only thing he has going for him so far...

Begovic, Caulker and Eriksen --> Krul, Coloccini and Lamela (only -4pts but leaves me with +£1m!) 😀

If you only can get one:

Tottenham: Eriksen vs Lamela vs Adebayor

    Eriksen:
+ On free kicks and some corners
    + Good FK-taker
+ Most nailed on of the 3

x Plays too deep too often

    Lamela:
    + On some corners
    + Gets forward a lot
+ Seems like he’s getting back to his Roma form
    + Goal and assist threat

x Higher rotation risk than Eriksen
x Still the most unproven of the 3

    Adebayor
+ Biggest goal threat of the 3
+ Has some good support behind him who could deliver goal threatening passes
    + Most probably on penalties

    x Unpredictable and inconsistent
x Highest rotation risk of the 3

Verdict: Lamela. He seems to be improving for every game and has the potential to continue improving, while Eriksen and Ade are probably playing at their max, or close to it. He has already done pretty well FPL wise, and if he can get back to his former Roma glory days, he will be a bargain, maybe even a must have.

Manchester United: Rooney vs Mata vs RvP

All are on FKs. Who will get more is hard to say.

    Rooney:
+ Consistent and most proven of the 3
+ Lowest rotation risk, however all 3 look pretty rotation safe for now
    + 2.0 cheaper than RvP

x Probably lost his penalties to RvP
x May get a deeper role than RvP, hard to say now how LVG will set that up
    RvP:
    + On penalties
+ Overall most clinical of the 3
    + Proven he can score

x Doesn’t look in-form, bad at the end of last season, not the most impressive WC, didn’t impress at all against Sunderland
    x 2.0 more than Rooney

    Mata:
+ Plays in the hole, his best position
+ Assist potential, and has proven he can get into the box and score as well

x Probably the least nailed on of the 3, however still pretty safe
x No quality in the holding mid department can hurt Mata, having to drop too deep or not getting enough deliveries

Verdict: Rooney. If he stays injury free, RvP could get back to his former glory, until then, Rooney will be the no.1 pick, even though RvP is on penalties. Mata isn’t consistent enough and Rooney for now looks like the one who will collect most points overall.

The only thing I'd disagree with is Eriksen's "plays too deep too often", as it doesn't really limit his output. He had quite a few more shots than Lamela against QPR, and was centimetres away from a goal (and an assist or two if Adebayor could have finished properly). In that case, I doubt many would be swayed towards Lamela - it still seems too early to tell.

but Lamela didn't play in France. 😯

RVP took up a deeper role than Rooney yesterday (avg position)..in fact deeper than Mata as well by a small amount.

Mata seems in the best form at the moment though, and having the highest points tally so far is a sign of that. Only two games in though so who knows. Both he and Rooney looked good in pre-season. As a Spurs fan I agree with Lamela, although a bit of a punt. Got my eye closely on Adebayor though - he could go on a good run.

    Stuck with Bojan and 0FT.

I'd be tempted to stick with him but I'm not sure about the security of his starts anymore...
He's competing with Arnautovic, Odemwingie, Moses, Adam, Ireland and maybe even N'Zonzi for three places basically right?

    What do people reckon?

  11. Bubz

Quite slow, so I'll throw my team out here for suggestions

    Begovic*
    PVA, Clyne, Caulker (Chambers*, Chester*)
    Hazard, Mata, Ramsey, Siggy (Marney)
    Costa, Rooney, Jovetic*

    2FT's, 0.00ITB.

Is there anything glaringly obvious that you would do? Obviously will be dependant on how Jov does tonight...

    1. Dogba
      • 11 Years

Pretty much identical to my team except I have Giroud over Jovetic.

Nothing obvious to do IMO. I'd say Jovetic or Chambers are your biggest risks, Chester is a good pick and I'd just leave him be. The problem with Jovetic is his price. Maybe Chambers & Jov -> Dummett & 8.5M forward? Ade comes to mind. Dzeko perhaps.

I'd consider Begovic to Krul. Stoke looking very average, Newcastle have decent fixtures and it would free up some cash for you!

You'll want a Liverpool player come gw4, so I guess start thinking about that. I currently have sterling.

I'm also toying with the idea of downgrading hazard to fit in aguero (for dzeko in my case) after the international break.

But no, team looks fine. Nothing glaring except jovetic.

Wait for Jovetic. If he looks unlikely to start again, Jovetic--->Ings + Costa--->Aguero could be a good one if you're feeling adventurous.

Otherwise, Begovic-->Krul/A better keeper, or replacing Chambers would be a few of the boring transfers I'd consider 😛

    currently have:

    Ramsey, Fab, Sterling, Mata (Wanyama)
    Rooney, De Costa, Bojan

Need to get rid of of Bojan. Reluctant to get rid of Mata (fixtures and scoring now) but seems the weak link and don't want to miss out on Siggy. Not convinced about forwards either so thinking of playing 5 mids. Which is better:

    A. Mata --> Siggy + Bojan --> Dzeko = Fab/Ram/Sterl/Siggy (Wanyama) + Rooney/Costa/Dzeko

    B Wanyama --> Siggy + Bojan --> Vaz te = Fab/Ram/Sterl/Mata/Siggy + Rooney/Costa (Vaz te)

Looks like Giroud is set to fall in price. I want to keep him but need to keep the money up (already lost 0.1 on Mata). Thinking Giroud to Jovetic (as he will gain this week after the two goals) but then I'm stuck with Mata and would really rather keep Giroud. What to do?

So I got the points of Jovetic's brace today but I had sold him already the day before to avoid the drop for Dzeko.

I also sold Hazard to get Silva in just to have enough for Dzeko.

          Depends what you're after, really.

          Most nailed-on, sturdy option: Marney
Potential for attacking returns: Albrighton, Quinn, Boyd
A little of both worlds: King (until James returns from injury at least)

Don't like Cattermole as an option due to the inevitable bookings he'll receive. Think Bentaleb is on borrowed time as Paulinho and Dembele build into the season following the world cup, though a spurs follower would know better than me.

Any thoughts on how Di Maria will affect the United lineup (specifically Mata) as I am worried it will mean that Mata no longer gets a spot in the number 10 role? I can see LVG dropping Mata for Di Maria, switching to a 4-2-3-1 with Rooney behind RVP and Mata either out wide or benched or hopefully playing Di Maria at wing back/centre mid and Mata will stay in the number 10 role.
