Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 3 – The Strong

With Gameweek 2 now behind us, our attentions turn to the upcoming schedule as we assess the forthcoming four to six Gameweeks. Our first instalment takes a look at those sides with more favourable fixtures, with the Tyne-Wear duo and struggling United afforded reasons for optimism:

SUNDERLAND

“involvement

Having performed admirably in their clash against Man United at the weekend, it’s two points from two matches now for Gus Poyet’s side, and a superb run of fixtures awaits the Black Cats in the weeks ahead. The visit of in-form Tottenham to the Stadium of Light in two weekends’ time will undoubtedly be a tough encounter, but that fixture sits in between trips to newly promoted QPR and Burnley, which are then followed by home showdowns against Swansea and Stoke.

The main source of points for the Black Cats so far has come from the midfield, with goals from Seb Larsson, Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell inspiring their side against West Brom and United. The former has set piece duties in his favour and also chipped in with an assist on Sunday afternoon to boost his prospects, though is the most expensive of the trio at 5.5 (compared to 4.5 and 5.0 respectively).

Up top, Steven Fletcher is yet to get his scoring tally underway, though has been fielded as the most advanced forward in his side’s opening two fixtures and looks most likely to benefit from the creativity of those in behind him. Sunderland’s defence, meanwhile, have maintained their budget appeal for this season, despite accumulating 11 shut-outs in their last league campaign. Vito Mannone (who totalled a noteworthy 134 points last year) is still first choice between the sticks and on offer for 4.5, though for the same price, Fantasy managers can acquire Patrick van Aanholt, whose strong performances at left-back since joining Poyet’s side from Chelsea in the summer have attracted our attentions.

MAN UNITED

“involvement

It’s a shame that Louis Van Gaal’s acknowledgement that he’s a slow starter with new clubs is holding so true, as United struggle to justify our heavy level of investment. Nonetheless, a strong set of opening fixtures continues for the Red Devils as they welcome QPR and West Ham to Old Trafford in their next six, with trips to Burnley, Leicester and West Brom also holding plenty of promise for the out-of-form Red Devils. Everton’s visit to the Theatre of Dreams in Gameweek 7 will be their first big test of the season, but Van Gaal will be optimistic that, by then, his side will have begun to click and better the performances evident in their loss to Swansea and 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday.

The 12.5-priced Robin Van Persie made a somewhat unconvincing comeback against the Black Cats, and will be hoping to get back up to stride quickly to help his side overcome their current slump. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney remains the most popular player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with an incredible 46% ownership, though his team’s poor form has already seen over 40,000 managers jump ship since the weekend.

Subject to a mass exodus and a subsequent price drop to 8.9 last week, Juan Mata came back to haunt those who traded him out with a 10-point display against Sunderland – with the fixtures in his favour, the Spaniard could now cement himself as a key midfield option in the weeks ahead, though it remains to be seen how the potential signing of Angel Di Maria would affect the playmakers role in the side. Faith in United’s rearguard assets is understandably low, though Phil Jones’ displays in the first couple of Gameweeks have been reassuring, with an assist against Swansea indicative of his superior appeal over his defensive team-mates.

SOUTHAMPTON

“involvement

An opening-day defeat to Liverpool may not have been the ideal start for new manager Ronald Koeman, but the Saints performed well enough to convince many of their doubters that the season ahead may not be as doom-and-gloom as many had predicted. Whilst last Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with West Brom was hardly full of attacking verve, a clean sheet and first point of the campaign for Koeman’s side should give them some momentum ahead of a strong set of upcoming fixtures. Home matches against Newcastle, QPR and Sunderland hold plenty of promise for further defensive returns, with trips to West Ham, Swansea and Tottenham also featuring in their next six.

Currently the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL, Nathaniel Clyne burst onto radars with a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend, though it was Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida who were the main beneficiaries on Saturday, after picking up three and two bonus points respectively. Fonte may be the most expensive of the trio at 5.5, but his penchant for acquiring bonus points, allied with his threat from set pieces, make him the most attractive asset in the Saints’ backline right now.

In midfield, James Ward Prowse will be looking to make the most of a share of set pieces, and at 5.0 the youngster could be a steal, whilst new signing Dusan Tadic will be hoping to build upon his debut assist against Liverpool. Up top, Koeman will be eager to see new boys Shane Long and Graziano Pelle build an understanding in the coming weeks – the former is up for grabs for just 6.0, and has the fixtures to cement his place in the side whilst Jay Rodriguez remains sidelined.

NEWCASTLE

“involvement

Two games and no goals for the Tyneside team doesn’t bode too well, but home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Hull City in the next three should provide them with a chance to get their tally up and running. On the other hand, a clean sheet against Aston Villa at the weekend has seen a number of their defensive options climb our Watchlist and, should they take advantage of their favourable fixture list, they may climb further still.

Between the sticks, Tim Krul is available for a mere 4.5 after a leaky campaign last time out and currently rests at the summit of our goalkeeper Watchlist. In defence, Fabricio Coloccini is available for the same price as Krul and picked up maximum bonus points in Saturday’s 0-0 draw to ensure he remains our defender of choice for Alan Pardew’s side.

Further up the field, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have offered plenty of creativity and drive over Newcastle’s opening two fixtures without any returns to show for it, suggesting that Siem De Jong may be the attacking asset du jour. Returning from a calf injury at Villa Park for the final 20 minutes of the encounter, the 7.0-priced midfielder came closest to netting for his side and gave Fantasy managers an impressive first taste of his talents.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
Managerless, surrounded by controversy off the field, and with two defeats in their first two matches, Palace’s fortunes aren’t looking too great at the moment. Nonetheless, the Eagles have home encounters with Burnley and Leicester in their next four to turn things around, whilst this weekend’s trip to goalless Newcastle won’t hold too much fear. Joel Ward and co will be confident of clean sheets, then, whilst Jason Puncheon – now back from a one-match suspension – has the platform to find the form that saw his popularity surge towards the end of last season.

Stoke
A late equaliser from Ryan Shawcross against 10-man Hull City on Sunday brought the Potters their first point of the season, and once they are on the other side of this weekend’s trip to Man City on Saturday, Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to kick on as their fixture list (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA) picks up immensely. In goal, Asmir Begovic remains a popular pick with 9.4% ownership and could be primed to prove his worth, whilst Bojan Krkic’s legion of owners will be hoping the forward can shake off a knock and live up to his pre-season form by delivering the points.

Liverpool
Monday night’s defeat at the hands of Man City will have a few minds wondering whether Brendan Rodgers’ side really can maintain last season’s quality without a certain Uruguayan on board. Encounters with Tottenham and Everton in their next six will put the Merseyside outfit under the spotlight once again, though trips to West Ham and QPR, allied with the visits of Aston Villa and West Brom to Anfield hold promise for the attacking fortunes of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom will be eager to press on after their opening weekend goals against Southampton. With injury worries at the back, few will be willing to invest in the Reds until they show some signs of resilience.

Right can I get your guys honest option on this planned wildcard team?

Any recommendations of changes? Too little up top? Had a terrible start so trying to quickly rectify it but not go too crazy on punts

    Krul
    Clyne Ivanovic PVA Dier NTaylor
    Hazard Ramsey Lamella Sterling Siggy
    Rooney Jovetic Naismith

Lamela, Naismith, Jovetic, Dier are all pretty much pints imo. I would go back to the drawing board if I were you.

Since you're using your wildcard, you should make a team with Aguero already in it. I predict he's going to be the top scorer this season, both in terms of goals and FPL points.

Looks solid. I'd personally go with:

Rooney Jovetic and Adebayor or Sturridge up front. Rotating isn't that effective for me personally unless it's for defenders.

Jovetic isn't nailed, and City have tough fixtures coming up in which Aguero would probably start.

Get a 4.0 defender like Wisdom since you'll end up playing Ivan and Clyne most, and then rotating Dier and PVA. No need to spend more than 4.0 on the last guy.

Lamela has tough fixtures. Fabregas is more economical than Hazard and imo will get as many points as him.

Jovetic is as nailed as he's ever going to be...

Lamela has tough fixtures???? I tend to disagree, in fact 7 of the next 10 games I'd rate as decent fixtures for Spurs

You have to provide some context - FF or actual football? Career long or now? For me in FF it's Ramsey because of value for money, but in absolute football terms Yaya is a player who might get voted into a current "World XI", Ramsey would not.

Fair enough - but I hadn't read the whole thread or looked at the straw poll details so I reckon it would have helped to insert the "ignore FPL" phrase in your post.

Once Aguero's up and running he is THE forward to have; Jovetic will be fish n'chips paper once Aguero starts and remains fit. My transfer this week is Bojan > Vaz To to free up 1m and then Rooney > Aguero next week.

The more and more I look at it, the more and more I think I'm getting Ade...

sun WBA ars SOT in the subsequent 4 games (before a possible GW8 WC)... and would make me feel better knowing I don't have to rely on Eriksen to get my points from Spurs...

Also means I can switch Eriksen to Sterling/Fab next week and still have Spurs attacking coverage...

Whereas Dzeko > Jovetic just looks too sideways and short term...

    Brilliant...

Lol, that's not how it works...

Making less transfers only helps when you are on the same points as someone else, but it is the points themselves that matter...

There are many scenarios where making more transfer can increase your rank, your statement isn't true...

... And there are also many scenarios where making more transfers can decrease your rank.

Fact is, ceteris paribus, the more transfers you make, the lower your rank.

So no, you don't "have to" use a transfer for the sake of using one.

The big difference is that I never said there wasn't a scenario where making more transfers could also decrease your rank... of course there are...

You, on the other hand made the sweeping statement that "the more (transfers) you make, the lower your rank.." which is just not true...

Yeah, I already made that distinction...

"Making less transfers only helps when you are on the same points as someone else, but it is the points themselves that matter..."

He was trying to suggest that in and of itself:

making more transfers = lower rank

                    Which just isn't true...

Not necessarily, what you are not taking into account is how many transfers other players have made...

If they were indeed the same, then your rank would be neither higher NOR lower, thus once again rendering your statement as false...

                      Sigh.

As soon as you make a transfer, your rank goes down.

                      That is a fact.

I don't see how that is possible...

Firstly, because rank only ever changes when updates are made, and people make transfers in between updates all the time...

Secondly, in between said transfer and subsequent update, object of said transfer could have played a game and scored good points, thus resulting in a better rank...

I fear we this discussion is being lost in translation or interpretation of the same idea... so I will stop now...

Thank you for having an actual conversation with me though, I think that is the first time this has happened...

I just went through the same thought process, Zeppers.

I went Jokevitch though largely as I'm still not sure about Spuds and going without Citeh is usually costly.

At 7.9, could be the cheap 3rd forward we're all looking for.

Don't be confused about Spurs. The new manager was very attacking at Saints, and he has better players available to him at Spurs. He is getting the best from Lamela. Ade will do well I think.

Nah he has a cult following on here. I had him for ages last season. When he starts in good fixtures he's as good as it gets in fpl. When he doesn't start you just want him to not come on so subs can take care of it.
He was cheaper last season though. I'm yet to be tempted by him this time. I'm sure it will come though 😉

So would Giroud if he stayed fit. But would either of them convert the few chances against top teams?

Wenger and the Gooner faithful are surely the only ones who would expect 20 goals from Olive Giroud. Bony is significantly better.

            1. The Finnisher
              • 12 Years
              9 years, 8 months ago

Giroud *could* get 20 goals, but it means nothing when pretty much 20 are games we win comfortably. Bony scored vs all top 7 last season bar Chelsea, and that was playing for Swansea.

Giroud? I think Everton at the weekend was the first time he managed anything vs a decent side.

And that was one strange goal. The cross seemed to find Giroud's head rather than the other way around. To be quite honest I'm pretty upset he got injured. Wenger was poised to let the window shut without adding another CF which you sorely need. Now you're basically forced into making the right decision.

        9 years, 8 months ago

He is an upgrade on Giroud, 100%

He is like Giroud though, which isn't great, but he is better in almost every aspect. More physically dominant, better finisher, better header and can hold the ball up just as well.

Perhaps the most convincing of them all; he scored and assisted vs Arsenal last season, scored vs Man City, scored and assisted vs Liverpool, scored vs Everton, scored vs Spurs and scored vs Man United

        1. athreya
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 8 months ago

Scoring vs United is hardly a criteria nowadays. We should be getting in Afobe then 🙂

Still not sure whether scoring consolation goals (vs City?) should count for much.

Also he will go to ACN right? When we will cope with Podolski/Sanogo and Sanchez/Walcott? Shudder.

As I said I am happy to be wrong. Bony is at least a proper No 9. And compared to Wellbeck, Remy he is way superior option.

Hi guys. One question, from your experience what tactic is more effective? Taking hits, upgrading team value and jumping on players in good form or to be patient and dont look at TV?

It's my second season in FPL. Last time I was jumping on bandwagons, took lots of hits, had a high team value and in the end I was 8100 (or near). This year I wanted to be more patient, but I feel that I'm missing something 🙂

The amount/rate of price rises this year (and the level of increased TV that is available from that) is IMO disproportionate to the benefit/advantage that one can gleam from it later on in the season...

The amount of hits needed to chase this minimal value is just not worth it... this is the year to focus purely on points...

Pell wont risk losing him prior to Ars & Chel fixtures. Especially with Jove on form.

wtf?? Jovetic went up in price last night.. TotalFPL should really shut down their Price Change section until they figure out the correct algorithm.

If you played FPL in the past when Balo was in the PL, you will know the answer is a definite

        NO.

Uhm, you are comparing apples with pears.

Balo has 47 yellow and 5 red cards in 104 games. My guess is most of his goals were from penalties, which he prob won'thave at Livpool.

            Not to mention this...

Nobody really said that, given his PPG at Bolton and Chelsea.

His brief spell at Bolton produced 8 goals from 12 very good, but before that there were 84 matches for City & Chelsea where he scored 18 goals hardly great PPG there

Balo already out for 10.0 and I expect Di Maria to be around 9.5.

Jovetic at less than 10%. Both good options. I thought long and hard about Ade. But then his exploits were against a daft QPR side.

Yeah, correct. But then Ade is on penalties and their main striker. Jovetic, although one form might not get 5 pts in a 4-0 drubbing.

Jove is the cheap man's Kun.

                    And i don't like City's fixt vs Chel/Ars

Kun fixes that. He'll score against anyone. If I get Jovetic, I'll have to use another transfer to take him out. If I get Kun I can easily upgrade Schurrle-->Chadli/Lamela or the best Spurs option IMO, Eriksen. Leaning towards Kun ATM.

True. But I really think Jovetic may settle into the Tevez role. He has the quality. Just needs to stay fit. He influences the game so much when he's fit and on form. Perhaps Jove is a bit more risky but I think the potential reward justifies it.

Yes, might be true. But in the Tevez days Dzeko/Negrdo(when fit) wasn't sniffing around.

Big Question is will Pelle play Kun/Jove together? Did he not take Jove off and then moved yaya further forward with F&F in the midf?

Pelly said yesterday that Jovetic can play with anyone. Sounded an awful lot like Jovetic is first choice.
