Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 3 – The Strong

With Gameweek 2 now behind us, our attentions turn to the upcoming schedule as we assess the forthcoming four to six Gameweeks. Our first instalment takes a look at those sides with more favourable fixtures, with the Tyne-Wear duo and struggling United afforded reasons for optimism:

SUNDERLAND

“involvement

Having performed admirably in their clash against Man United at the weekend, it’s two points from two matches now for Gus Poyet’s side, and a superb run of fixtures awaits the Black Cats in the weeks ahead. The visit of in-form Tottenham to the Stadium of Light in two weekends’ time will undoubtedly be a tough encounter, but that fixture sits in between trips to newly promoted QPR and Burnley, which are then followed by home showdowns against Swansea and Stoke.

The main source of points for the Black Cats so far has come from the midfield, with goals from Seb Larsson, Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell inspiring their side against West Brom and United. The former has set piece duties in his favour and also chipped in with an assist on Sunday afternoon to boost his prospects, though is the most expensive of the trio at 5.5 (compared to 4.5 and 5.0 respectively).

Up top, Steven Fletcher is yet to get his scoring tally underway, though has been fielded as the most advanced forward in his side’s opening two fixtures and looks most likely to benefit from the creativity of those in behind him. Sunderland’s defence, meanwhile, have maintained their budget appeal for this season, despite accumulating 11 shut-outs in their last league campaign. Vito Mannone (who totalled a noteworthy 134 points last year) is still first choice between the sticks and on offer for 4.5, though for the same price, Fantasy managers can acquire Patrick van Aanholt, whose strong performances at left-back since joining Poyet’s side from Chelsea in the summer have attracted our attentions.

MAN UNITED

“involvement

It’s a shame that Louis Van Gaal’s acknowledgement that he’s a slow starter with new clubs is holding so true, as United struggle to justify our heavy level of investment. Nonetheless, a strong set of opening fixtures continues for the Red Devils as they welcome QPR and West Ham to Old Trafford in their next six, with trips to Burnley, Leicester and West Brom also holding plenty of promise for the out-of-form Red Devils. Everton’s visit to the Theatre of Dreams in Gameweek 7 will be their first big test of the season, but Van Gaal will be optimistic that, by then, his side will have begun to click and better the performances evident in their loss to Swansea and 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday.

The 12.5-priced Robin Van Persie made a somewhat unconvincing comeback against the Black Cats, and will be hoping to get back up to stride quickly to help his side overcome their current slump. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney remains the most popular player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with an incredible 46% ownership, though his team’s poor form has already seen over 40,000 managers jump ship since the weekend.

Subject to a mass exodus and a subsequent price drop to 8.9 last week, Juan Mata came back to haunt those who traded him out with a 10-point display against Sunderland – with the fixtures in his favour, the Spaniard could now cement himself as a key midfield option in the weeks ahead, though it remains to be seen how the potential signing of Angel Di Maria would affect the playmakers role in the side. Faith in United’s rearguard assets is understandably low, though Phil Jones’ displays in the first couple of Gameweeks have been reassuring, with an assist against Swansea indicative of his superior appeal over his defensive team-mates.

SOUTHAMPTON

“involvement

An opening-day defeat to Liverpool may not have been the ideal start for new manager Ronald Koeman, but the Saints performed well enough to convince many of their doubters that the season ahead may not be as doom-and-gloom as many had predicted. Whilst last Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with West Brom was hardly full of attacking verve, a clean sheet and first point of the campaign for Koeman’s side should give them some momentum ahead of a strong set of upcoming fixtures. Home matches against Newcastle, QPR and Sunderland hold plenty of promise for further defensive returns, with trips to West Ham, Swansea and Tottenham also featuring in their next six.

Currently the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL, Nathaniel Clyne burst onto radars with a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend, though it was Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida who were the main beneficiaries on Saturday, after picking up three and two bonus points respectively. Fonte may be the most expensive of the trio at 5.5, but his penchant for acquiring bonus points, allied with his threat from set pieces, make him the most attractive asset in the Saints’ backline right now.

In midfield, James Ward Prowse will be looking to make the most of a share of set pieces, and at 5.0 the youngster could be a steal, whilst new signing Dusan Tadic will be hoping to build upon his debut assist against Liverpool. Up top, Koeman will be eager to see new boys Shane Long and Graziano Pelle build an understanding in the coming weeks – the former is up for grabs for just 6.0, and has the fixtures to cement his place in the side whilst Jay Rodriguez remains sidelined.

NEWCASTLE

“involvement

Two games and no goals for the Tyneside team doesn’t bode too well, but home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Hull City in the next three should provide them with a chance to get their tally up and running. On the other hand, a clean sheet against Aston Villa at the weekend has seen a number of their defensive options climb our Watchlist and, should they take advantage of their favourable fixture list, they may climb further still.

Between the sticks, Tim Krul is available for a mere 4.5 after a leaky campaign last time out and currently rests at the summit of our goalkeeper Watchlist. In defence, Fabricio Coloccini is available for the same price as Krul and picked up maximum bonus points in Saturday’s 0-0 draw to ensure he remains our defender of choice for Alan Pardew’s side.

Further up the field, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have offered plenty of creativity and drive over Newcastle’s opening two fixtures without any returns to show for it, suggesting that Siem De Jong may be the attacking asset du jour. Returning from a calf injury at Villa Park for the final 20 minutes of the encounter, the 7.0-priced midfielder came closest to netting for his side and gave Fantasy managers an impressive first taste of his talents.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
Managerless, surrounded by controversy off the field, and with two defeats in their first two matches, Palace’s fortunes aren’t looking too great at the moment. Nonetheless, the Eagles have home encounters with Burnley and Leicester in their next four to turn things around, whilst this weekend’s trip to goalless Newcastle won’t hold too much fear. Joel Ward and co will be confident of clean sheets, then, whilst Jason Puncheon – now back from a one-match suspension – has the platform to find the form that saw his popularity surge towards the end of last season.

Stoke
A late equaliser from Ryan Shawcross against 10-man Hull City on Sunday brought the Potters their first point of the season, and once they are on the other side of this weekend’s trip to Man City on Saturday, Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to kick on as their fixture list (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA) picks up immensely. In goal, Asmir Begovic remains a popular pick with 9.4% ownership and could be primed to prove his worth, whilst Bojan Krkic’s legion of owners will be hoping the forward can shake off a knock and live up to his pre-season form by delivering the points.

Liverpool
Monday night’s defeat at the hands of Man City will have a few minds wondering whether Brendan Rodgers’ side really can maintain last season’s quality without a certain Uruguayan on board. Encounters with Tottenham and Everton in their next six will put the Merseyside outfit under the spotlight once again, though trips to West Ham and QPR, allied with the visits of Aston Villa and West Brom to Anfield hold promise for the attacking fortunes of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom will be eager to press on after their opening weekend goals against Southampton. With injury worries at the back, few will be willing to invest in the Reds until they show some signs of resilience.

Completely depends on how Di Maria affects Mata.

United play the 3 promoted teams next so I'd say it's worth holding on to your United assets, but if Mata is dropped back further or even benched, then I'd get in Lamela.

I am worried about the lack of form at United and having Rooney + Mata seems overkill. I am not sure whether Mata will keep some sort of form. On the other hand, Lamela is a great differential and Spurs are scoring loads of goals. So I think the Argentine is a better prospect at the moment

Then follow your hunch Yome 🙂

I never fancied Mata from the start, but if I had him now I probably wouldn't take him out with those 3 games coming..

But if you think United are going to continue to struggle and if Lamela has caught your eye (I think he's great value for money) then go for it 😀

All this QPR are shocking chat is a bit of an overreaction I feel. Granted they got hammered in one of their only two games, albeit against a Spurs side playing very well, but they only lost to a corner against Hull and could have easily won with a clean sheet!

Maybe true. Hull game I agree they should of won they had like 19 shots???? + Missed pen. Also Remy still looks high on the drugs which made him fail his Pool medical. Spurs game was a tactical blunder. 3-5-2 is quite weak against teams with pace in wide areas and Spurs have that in abundance (As do Swansea as they showed United). In addition Dunne and Rio was a disaster waiting to happen, I've seen paint dry quicker than those two.

Thinking of getting rid of Dzeko. Adebayor and Jelavic seem to be the best options, not mad on Jovetic i think Stoke was the first time i've ever seen him play 90 and who knows he may have made way had Dzeko not been hurt.

I think he's a good player but he's not the guy I want in my FPL team. He'll rarely finish a match, if that is he even starts. He's the type of Schurrle / Navas / Coutinho / Nasri player that's the first to make way when the team doesn't perform.

I think this talk of Mata being in trouble with the Di Maria signing is misleading. United's passing has been nothing short of a shambles, and one must ask...who is the best passer in the team, irrespective of poor workrate and defensive positioning. The two latter attributes can be compensated by the efforts of other players, however you cannot compensate for poor passers.

Agree. They're not going to get better by dropping their best players so can't see mata not playing.

Unfortunately I don't think Wenger will go out and spend big on a striker. He will either opt to stick with what he already has - Podolski, Campbell, Sanogo, Sanchez, Walcott - or grab Remy for a steal at 8.5million.

It would be incredible if Real used the Di Maria money to get Falcao and Arsenal jump in at the last minute to get Benzema.

When invigilating we made out our game of Battleships. Draw the students desk on a grid. Set 10 questions. Most likely to fail? Worst hair? Sweating the most? etc Write down the answers as coordinates. Take in turns to go and stand by the student for each questions. Correct student. Hit

There is a rumor of a Pac Man type game but never seen it

Pool will score 2 at weekend and they'll all get 0-1 points and people will just transfer them out again. Some simply crazy bandwagons this season so far. Siggy understandable but Spurs have played two relegation fodder teams so far with nothing up front. Let's see how they do against Pool.

Those without LIV attack, who are you looking at bringing in from GW4 onwards?

    3 clear candidates for me:

    A) Sterling - cheapest of the 3, playing almost OOP, but also likely to have his gametime eaten into once Markovic and Lallana are both fully fit

    B) Sturridge - biggest goal threat and most advanced. Will he get pushed out wide with the arrival of Mario? Money no object he's probably still the best pick, but as always, money is important

    C) Mario - good record in the prem, likely to play down the middle, 1.5m cheaper than B) and outside chance of pens. Bit of a card magnet though.

    Thoughts?

yep - one more blank from Eriksen and he's out. He's played mediocre teams so far with little to show for it apart from hitting the bar - let's see how he does V Livpool. Im sure he'll start coming through at some point but can't afford to keep holding on...probly replace with Cabella.

Sturridge is way too expensive IMO, he's not explosive enough. I'd rather give Mario a few weeks before punting on him. I'm interested in Sterling but do people think Mario will benefit or hinder Raheem as a FPL prospect?

benefit definitely. another good finisher on the end of his passes...sturridge likes to drift wide already and think mario and sterling will both be more central, if the three of them link up well it will be amazing

I think BR will stick with his 4-3-3 with Gerrard, Hendo and Cam/Allen in the defensive 3.

That means only 3 spots for the following, and I think Sturridge is the most nailed:

        Studge
        Ballo
        Sterling
        Lallana
        Markovic
        Coutinho

So in short I think Sterling has it all to do to avoid rotation

A few started with big trios up top. Now with Aguero looking good more people are going for it. Give it a couple more GWs, everybody and their grandmothers will have a huge trio up top.

I think Welbeck needs to leave United, he's got talent, and work ethic, he just needs a proper good coach giving him a proper good run of games and focus on his skills, not just his work ethic, he's seen as a "Kuyt-like-player" at United at times...

I thought he was far and away United's best performer last night in a team full of absolute jokes.. Januzaj came on and did alright but Welbeck was the only one who A) didn't lose the ball every time, B) actually tried to attack with intent, C) looked interested and motivated.

Fair point, didn't see game but with that line up I expect more from those in the red jersey.
The problem I have with Wellbeck is that when Fergie gave him runs in the team his end product wasn't good enough, yea those runs were patchy and far and few in between.
I ain't questioning his endeavour and commitment but I don't think he's as good as he likes to think he is.

It's probably been said already but the number of price fallers is ridiculous. Over 30 players dropped last night and two rose.

Falls are a % of owners while rises are a set total of transfers in.

Some of these players had such low ownership that even if afew 1000 people get rid they drop.

big difference now is that its 100% to get 0.1 rise then 200% to get the .2 rise and 300% to get the .3. This means the .2 rises in a week will happen less.

are you going by total fpl? Dont the data there is wrong. Basically there is a total a player reaches of transfers in. When this achieved they rise .1. to achieve .2 this is now doubled, last year it was the same amount.

No site has accurate data this year.

Sorry no idea on the number needed for rise, i relied on those sites too!

Best advice is avoid price drops this year, its so much harder to make the .2s back. Only way to do that is risk a few points hits on getting rid of players being dropped by others. Sorry cant help any more than that

i'm pretty sure it was like this with price falls - but because of all the prices rises, you didn't really notice/ wasn't an issue.

if it keeps up like this, its going to be very hard to build team value this season, which adds an interesting dimension but seems like it helps the 'casual' more than anyone else - perhaps an unsurprising move by FPL towers?

Who to get rid of for Aguero:

      A. Rooney (played deeper last game but fixtures couldn't be better)

      Or

      B. Costa (no signs of explosiveness yet but service is second to none)

      ?

That would prove that it's the team's fault and not the manager.

Moyes / Van Gaal / Fergie... They'd all have trouble getting results and cohesion with that unbalanced squad.

He's already scored... His form has been alright, enough to score a few more against the 3 promoted sides in the next 3.

I'll give him time till there are other strong options. At the moment, no elite forwards look very promising.

When did one goal in two games become unacceptable?

i was just asking a question and was interested in what peoples thoughts are. I am doing same as above at least next 3. He's capable of big scores, where as Costa i think will be a one goal a game man more often then not.

It's a tough one. Going to see how things go this weekend and then may move him on for Sturridge, who has excellent fixtures coming up

How does the following sound? A bit gutted to lose Hazard...

      Hazard -> Fab

      Mata -> Sterling

      Costa -> Aguero

      Thoughts

Why? He is a steady Eddie , Aguero will surely be a bigger player this year?

Also, I have Chelsea cover, but no City cover.

lol - he's played twice and scored twice. so he's a 'steady eddie'. some people on this website do make me laugh!

The three players you're taking out can easily outscore the ones you're bringing in. Not worth the transfers.

Thanks for the feedback - however, I do feel that bar Hazard - the players
coming in are more explosive and will get more points.

It also allows me to diversify - as currently no City or Pool cover

I quite like it. Don't know how long Wisdom and Dier will keep their places though, and I don't know how likely Balo is to be nailed on straight away. The midfield is nice.
