The Digest – Gameweek 2

We take out final glance back at Gameweek 2 this lunchtime. City’s forgotten forward and Tottenham’s form under the new man in charge come under discussion, whilst we also look at the need to afford our players the chance to find their feet before pressing the “transfer out” button.

The Player

Stevan Jovetic’s double at home to Liverpool brings the City forward into focus after last night’s win over the Merseysiders. There were concerns surrounding the Montenegro man’s pitch time as Sergio Aguero edged towards full fitness but he was once again handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko and displayed the type of deadly finishing that served up 27 goals, in addition to 12 assists, over his final two years in Italy with Fiorentina.

Despite scoring five times in pre-season, Jovetic was largely overlooked as the campaign got underway and sat in less than 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams for the encounter with Brendan Rodgers’ side. By the time the match finished, he’d leapt onto Fantasy radars with a two-goal salvo that earned his manager’s post-match praise and, with a home clash against travel-sick Stoke up next, seems poised for major investment.

Granted, as the campaign unfolds, there’s no doubt that Jovetic will succumb to his manager’s rotational whims but right now, the situation seems in his favour. With Alvaro Negredo injured, Aguero not yet 100% and Dzeko limping off with a leg problem last night, he certainly looks a strong contender for our three-man frontlines. At a time when many of the mid-price frontmen (Emmanuel Adebayor aside) have failed to convince, Jovetic, at just 7.9 in FPL, looks a very tempting route into an attack that racked up 101 goals in its way to the title last term.

The Team

A 4-0 demolition of QPR in Mauricio Pochettino’s first home match at the Tottenham helm underlined the Fantasy potential on offer at the north London club. The Argentine’s impact has been immediate since rolling up to the Lane and his high pressing approach is already reaping reward, offering Fantasy managers prospects right across the pitch.

Whilst the second half of last season saw Christian Eriksen as the sole option in the Spurs midfield, Pochettino’s arrival looks to have furthered our options in the centre of the park. Nacer Chadli managed a single goal last season and has already bettered that tally with a brace against Harry Redknapp’s side – priced at just 6.0 in FPL, the Belgian looks a real mid-price alternative if he can nail down a starting berth in the attacking midfield three. Erik Lamela’s pair of assists suggests he, too, could be set for a turnaround in fortunes, while Emmanuel Adebayor could be the pick of the mid-price forwards if he kicks on from his goal and assist against the R’s.

At the back, Spurs have been quick to hint at the resilience that helped Southampton earn 15 shut-outs under Pellegrini in 2013/14. Back-to-back goals from Eric Dier has ensured the summer signing earns most of the Fantasy attention as his ownership climbs past 10%, though it’s yet to be seen just where he stands in the pecking order once Pochettino has a fully-fit quota of defenders to choose from. Jan Vertonghen is a pricier option but if his manager’s magic touch can unlock the goal threat that saw him net five times in his debut season, the Belgian could be another Tottenham alternative arriving on our radars shortly.

The Talking Point

Jovetic’s double against Liverpool merely underlines the need to afford our squads a little more patience as the season gets up and running. For some, weeks of careful planning and preparation were thrown to one side after Gameweek 1, as more than 152,000 wildcards were wielded after just a single round of action.

After their win over Newcastle, City were poised for three home matches in four, yet Jovetic, as their form forward (and the only one with a full pre-season behind him), was cast aside by over 24,000 Fantasy managers after blanking at St James’ Park and suffered a drop in price. At such a favourable cost, the scramble is now on for his signature ahead of the Stoke clash, with over 76,000 already transferring him in.

In midfield, many lost patience with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard – two proven Premier League big-hitters. Offloaded by 94,000 FPL owners last week, Mata subsequently notched his seventh goal in eight league outings in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Hazard, meanwhile, was sold by nearly 50,000 managers ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester – bearing in mind the Belgian had scored 10 of his 14 strikes at the Bridge last season, there was something of an inevitability about his goal against The Foxes.

With player prices appearing to take longer to change in this season’s FPL game so far, there have been fewer fluctuations than ever in the market – essentially, this is allowing us the chance to stick to our guns and follow through on our long-term planning. Granted, while following the bandwagons, such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, can pay off handsomely, reining in our knee-jerk reactions and maintaining courage in our initial convictions can prove the wisest move.

      Great Article

Still stand by my decision to use a WC early (this season GW3) as price fluctuations caused by bandwagon signings can ruin your long term plans to bring players in.

For example, taking Jovetic now at 7.9 means i can bring in Sterling at 8.6. If i waited any longer this may not be financially possible.

You should stick to your instincts with regards to usual big hitters. I have kept faith with Mata and has already paid off in GW2.

In summary, i believe if you leave your WC too late its no use to you as squad values will of fluctuated too high by then.

As someone who WC in GW1 last year I completely see this argument and that set me up brilliantly. There are a few things you haven't taken into account

        1. Price fluctutations seem to have slowed this year
        2. Leaving a WC late in the season for a DGW can pay off handsomely. Even great players who flew up in price last year like Ramsey and Coleman then got injured so you had to profit take.

        1. RubberDucky
            9 years, 9 months ago

Every system has pro's and con's.

            1. Yes price fluctuations have slowed down but fluctuate they still will, so leave it till January and you will still have a budget issue.

            2. DGW can be fantastic but you can estimate far in advance which clubs will have DGW i.e clubs that will do well in Europe and FA Cup i.e Chelsea/Man City, already in your team? sorted. Already have a high variation of clubs in your squad? Happy Days!

If high priced players get injured, take the knock and remove them one week at a time, this emphasises the importance of a bench that actually plays regularly, especially in defence.

            1. Courtois in the Rye
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 9 months ago

It's not always that simple because remember any club that has a DGW by definition also has a blank GW at some stage.
Look at last season and the City blank in 28 followed by huge blanks in 29 followed by the GW31 double. There wasn't the time to re-order your squad without hits so most people took a compromise, those who wildcarded cleaned up.

I'm all for an early wildcard but only if you've made multiple bad choices early on, a WC just for price rises is a waste imo.

              1. RubberDucky
                  9 years, 9 months ago

Your right, you have to be carefull.

I wouldnt normally use my WC this early (usually wait till transfer window closes) but was happy with 9 out of the 11 and you need to take the opportunity to tweak when you can afford it.

Trying to find that vital 0.1 million you need, can result in too much re figuring of your squad to get that one player you want.

Im in my WC week and as well as Jovetic/Sterling for Giroud/Eriksen im also considering a 4.5 GK for Bergovic (i already have Krul). The 0.5 in the bank will be useful in case the likes of Mata of Fab or anyone really, starts to struggle and I need to jump on a player who's price has risen.

With regards to DGW dont for get that there is the possibility you have 2 FT to put two players in and then slowly work them back out.

I think we actually agree on the whole WC used early but of course you can get burned. Sometimes you need to take a measured gamble to get the extra points.

I held my free transfer last week but think it's time for a little surgery.

          De Gea Gilks

          Coloccini Terry Wisdom Chester Taylor

          Ramsey Fabregas Henderson Young Marney

          Rooney Costa Sturridge

I'm thinking the most obvious two transfers are DDG to Krul and Young to Siggi for free? I know that means double Newcastle for the moment but that's not really a disaster with Palace (H) up next and generally great fixtures.

Any other thoughts? I went against my gut with Sturridge but their fixtures from GW4 are irresistable so I think he stays for now.

Anyone else concerned by the rapid price falls this time around? Am I remembering it differently? I just don't recalll so, so many players values falling after a single week (twice). It used to be after a small run of poor form. Regardless of that, what are people's thoughts on keeping players in your team who's value is going down?

I'm assuming most people have Costa and Rooney as their main strikers which bar the heavy front line leaves most of us with a 9.0-8.0m forward. Out of these options I see:

          Ade - Seems nailed on
          Bony - Rotation risk
          Jovetic - Rotation risk
          Dzeko - Rotation risk (inj)
          Giroud - Injured
Lukaku - Slight injury (patchy form)

Can only really see Ade as nailed on here. In the 5.5 and below category:

Naismith - Nailed on? In form
          Berahino - Nailed on?
          Weimann - Nailed on
          Chmakh - Nailed on
Fletcher - Nailed on (till he gets injured)

Isn't there a lot of value to be had in the 5.5 striker bracket? And to be honest they will probably be warming the bench most of the time allowing for Sturridge, Lamella, Eriksen, Tadic, Dejong etc to get some points in a heavy mid field.

Am I wrong or is 3-5-2 the way to go?

still think 3-4-3 is the most reliable, just wait til sturridge starts bangin them in an aguero is fit

tend to agree. in reality I think three "biggies" may be unattainable this year because of the value in midfield - three of sturridge, aguero, rooney, costa, rvp leaves you only being able to afford two top midfielders (and siggy) and given Ramsey, Hazard, Silva, Mata, Sterling, Fab are all already well in the points it seems like 3-5-2 with a budget option might be the way forward

The only problem with 3-5-2 is that it is quite hard to unwind.

Sturridge from GW4 could be very high scoring and Aguero may still come into consideration.

Ade does look a very good option for Spurs - generally nice fixtures too.

I'm probably shopping in a similar price bracket. Does AJ coming back in threaten Larsson productivity in any way? I wonder if Downing or Rodwell are better similarly priced options.

yeah Rodwell looks good value for sure.. pair of 60 mins game time a concern?

he is such a tease.. I pick him most seasons, starts off well then goes missing.. I'll probably still be tempted.. have Al Ahmadi stinking up the last bench spot..

            either going to go

            Ahmadi to Larsson (bench bojan)
            or
Bojan to Jovetic or Naismith (have to start)

Anyone else thinking Sturridge points haul will be lower as ballotelli will play central and not known for providing assists to others?

Sturridge and Caulker to Aguero and Naylor for 2 frees? 31 mins total and the man's in the top 5 strikers, feel like he's gonna explode against Stoke

missed on last page of last thread..

"Most likely selling Bojan.. do I go cheaper with Naismith? or take a punt on Jovetic.. have 2.9m in the bank.. so the latter is affordable"

              probably bank them..

i'd probably deal with my dead mid bench (al ahmadi) next week if I go Naismith

Jovetic is surely less of a punt considering he is in form (especially considering his pre-season), the only Man City striker 100%, and facing Stoke at home. But it depends if you want to play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 or not.

well, It be more of a 3-4-3.. probably prefer it and have no Man City players either.. silly by me

I'm stuck with two midfield cheapies, Mutch and Davis. Mutch has done very little of threat, but does have a decent fixture at the weekend. Davis looks like he might be in the process of being ousted from the first XI. Only 1 FT. Which to replace first and with whom?
