The Digest – Gameweek 3

We cast a final glance back towards Gameweek 3 this morning. Chelsea’s deadly front man, Liverpool’s display at the Lane and the encouraging form of a number of budget strikers all come into consideration.

The Player

On Thursday, the press were united in suggesting he’d be out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. On Friday, Jose Mourinho described him as a “big doubt” for Chelsea’s trip to Everton. On Saturday, Diego Costa scored twice and grabbed the maximum bonus points in a 6-3 rout at Goodison, badly burning the 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who decided to part company with the summer signing ahead of the weekend deadline.

He’s been bothered by hamstring problems before but Costa, clearly, is made of stern stuff – last season he started 34 of Atletico’s 38 league matches on the way to the La Liga title. Already with four strikes to his name, his consistency compares very favourably to team-mate Eden Hazard – Costa has already scored three times on his travels, just one fewer than the Belgian managed away from Stamford Bridge over the entire 2013/14 campaign.

With Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings in midfield and Costa’s predatory nature in the box, Mourinho’s side look full of goals right now and the Spain international could well be on course to replicate last term’s 28-goal heroics for Atletico. Snapped up by over 240,000 FPL managers already this week, Costa may not quite scale the heights of Luis Suarez as a Fantasy asset but, from what we’ve seen so far, he may be as close as we can hope for this season.

The Team

A patchy home win over Southampton on the opening day of the season highlighted that Liverpool were still finding their feet after the Uruguayan’s departure. Defeat at City hardly helped instil confidence as the Reds rolled up to face a Spurs side that had yet to concede under Mauricio Pochettino but the manner of their emphatic victory suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are still a Fantasy force to be reckoned with.

Switching to a midfield diamond, with Raheem Sterling tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and debutant Mario Balotelli, the Merseysiders tore apart the Tottenham rearguard with a display that could easily have harvested more than three goals. The attacking trio now brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures that is sure to bring significant investment Liverpool’s way – heading into the next six Gameweeks (AVL, wh, EVE, WBA, qpr, HUL) without at least one of Sterling and Sturridge on board looks a risky tactic.

At the back, too, the attacking thrust offered by summer signing Alberto Moreno down the left has already come to fruition emphatically at the Lane. With Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel sidelined through injury last weekend, the Reds backline expertly marshaled their opponents in the final third, and with new boys Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo also starting alongside Moreno and Mamadou Sakho, there’s cause for optimism at both ends of the pitch for Rodgers’ side right now.

The Talking Point

As Costa headed into the weekend with question marks hanging over him, Fantasy managers loaded up on City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero for the home clash against Stoke. Their failure to deliver, allied with United’s toils at Burnley and Sturridge’s blank at Spurs, came at a time where many budget forwards put their names forward as potential contenders for our three-man frontlines.

After three Gameweeks of the new season, five of the top eight forwards are priced at 6.0 and under. Steven Naismith and Andreas Weimann have already delivered 20+ points for their owners, while Saido Berahino, Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa are all pushing to be this year’s Jay Rodriguez.

Right now, with such a wealth of budget options to consider, many may be tempted to spend big in midfield and potentially snap up Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the back, bringing more 3-5-2 formations into contention than ever before.

For others, it’s only a matter of time before the premium forwards start to deliver, though. As mentioned, Liverpool’s run of matches will surely afford Sturridge the chance to get amongst the goals again, while the arrival of Radamel Falcao at United looks very tempting – crucially, the Colombian would be a real differential to the 42%-owned Wayne Rooney and is priced at 11.0 to Rooney’s 10.5. With the prolific Costa looking unstoppable, a trio of heavy-hitters up top looks just as enticing.

For the sake of our Fantasy seasons, though, we need the likes of Naismith and Ivanovic to flourish in order to offer more variety amongst out 15-man squads. It can only be beneficial to the Fantasy games and managers alike that, as we head into Gameweek 4, there’s less agreement than ever on the 2014/15 “template team”.

Would you do these transfers now for -8? Or would you wait and spread them out over the next 2 weeks:

    Caulker > Moreno
    Jovetic > Welbeck
    Rooney > Aguero

Would be in this order as well, miss caulker vs man utd, welbeck misses city at home where he's likely to start on the bench anyway and then aguero misses next 2 difficult fixtures then comes in for good fixtures

      I have same 3 , but 2 fts.
Caulker to Moreno or Debuchy to Moreno going to be 1 x def.

Im holding on Roon transfer for the QPR game.

      Maybe just the first 2 for a - 4 for you ?

tough one that, is debuchy getting high up the field? caulker is getting chances but ultimately one plays for QPR and the other is Arsenal, maybe that helps. Keep Rooney i agree, that's what i'll do

Yeah - Want Moreno and 1 of to a 4.5 anyway - Need to have funds ready for the Rooney - Falcao move. Of course Wellbeck helps big time for that switch.

    RP:
Should I WC? Might take an 8 point hit if I don't. ( Already used FT to get in Sterling)

    Team Currently:

    DDG
    Debuchy* Terry Caulker* (Chester,WIsdom)
    Schurrle** Siggy Ramsey Sterling
    Rooney* Naismith Aguero

Probably go for this if I WCed:

    Forster(Krul)
    Ivanovic Moreno Dier (Janmaat Duff)
    Tadic Ramsey Sterling Siggy (Boyd)
    Falcao Costa Naismith

    1m in the bank. -----Tadic/Mirallas/Zaha........Sturridge/Falcao

    Cheers 🙂

I don't like that WC team for following reasons.

        No City players (Aguero)
        No Fabregas/Hazard (Essential)
        Naismith will dry up
Too much money on GK's combo
Tadic is a waste at 7.5m so many better options
        Too much money on DEF

        Just my thoughts!

Yeah fair enough, don't get me wrong, looks a decent team, and your defenders are all starting players - but if I was going to do anything I would change Tadic - let's say for JWP, and then use the extra 1.5m? to get some better defenders in.

    @Jonty

I hear your point of Falcao, but look at his goal record, a goal in 2 out out of every 3 games. To me if he hits that sort of level, that's captaincy material, which arguabaly a streaky player like Rooney/Hazard is less of. Perhaps that makes him worth the extra for the captaincy?

Of course the other argument is that Rooney will still score 15+ with the same in assists., but the BPS favour goal scoring strikers so much now.

    1. Barry Woj
      • 11 Years

He's been on penalties at all his clubs. Remains to be seen if he will have these at Utd.

well I can see him being ahead of Rooney who isn't a great peno taker tbh, RvP is another matter

The thing with united is that if Falcao scores a lot Rooney is the most likely to assist him. Plus Rooney is on penalties when RVP is not there. I can't see Rooney being third in line. With Rooney cheaper I still think he offers a good option in Man U attack. If Falcao takes pens ahead of Rooney and RVP is injured then yes Falcao makes sense to get.

Welbeck is still the most exciting move from a Fantasy perspective in my books as he has no competition in Arsenal attack. Arsenal are also a team that scores a lot of goals so at £6.9m Welbeck has to be the better option in Fantasy terms. Plus with Welbeck you have to factor in the money saved and used elsewhere.

I stress I am not saying Welbeck is a better footballer than Falcao..this is purely in terms of constructing a Fantasy team.

I can see Rooney being 3rd in line, he's not a very good penalty taker, his conversion rate is about 50%

for a supposed top level striker that is pretty poor

Logically he should be third...but when it comes to Rooney and ManU other factors are at play. I can't see the captain giving up penalties to a loan player no matter how good that loan player is. Politically I think he'll stay second.

similar problem.. i'd prob want Welbeck in a few weeks anyway so it'd be one free transfer swapping pelle back to welbeck. can consider that as a -4(value of a free transfer). i may just go welbeck

Tough one, Spencer. Think I might wait for Welbeck to settle in, Southampton have much better fixtures anyway.

        Thanks guys.

Maybe I'll prioritise my "Chambers out" policy first and play 4-4-2 this GW. Have a while to think about it.

GW8 is the week for Welbeck

Ramsey and Naismith to Mirallas and Welbz could be the way forward

Mirallas will be more expensive by GW8, but yes 😉

I could do with my internet breaking to stop me tinkering

    GW2 -12
    GW3 WC
    GW4 -8 already

Started gw1 thinking...no hits this season. Cursed price rises.

Yep....chasing points and prices. Gotta stick with the team I have now and leave it alone. Resist the lure of the punts and bandwagons.

Not bad but doubling up on Villa DEF is pretty silly given their next 5 games imo

Anyone know anything about Powell and Lawrence at Leicester? Are they any good? Worth a punt?

Thanks, Dyer is my only doubt but looks like the best option at that price and is an easy downgrade, and gains value in the mean time

Looks great. I prefer not having to make attacking rotations just because I'm lazy hah. Very solid DEF
