The Digest – Gameweek 3

We cast a final glance back towards Gameweek 3 this morning. Chelsea’s deadly front man, Liverpool’s display at the Lane and the encouraging form of a number of budget strikers all come into consideration.

The Player

On Thursday, the press were united in suggesting he’d be out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. On Friday, Jose Mourinho described him as a “big doubt” for Chelsea’s trip to Everton. On Saturday, Diego Costa scored twice and grabbed the maximum bonus points in a 6-3 rout at Goodison, badly burning the 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who decided to part company with the summer signing ahead of the weekend deadline.

He’s been bothered by hamstring problems before but Costa, clearly, is made of stern stuff – last season he started 34 of Atletico’s 38 league matches on the way to the La Liga title. Already with four strikes to his name, his consistency compares very favourably to team-mate Eden Hazard – Costa has already scored three times on his travels, just one fewer than the Belgian managed away from Stamford Bridge over the entire 2013/14 campaign.

With Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings in midfield and Costa’s predatory nature in the box, Mourinho’s side look full of goals right now and the Spain international could well be on course to replicate last term’s 28-goal heroics for Atletico. Snapped up by over 240,000 FPL managers already this week, Costa may not quite scale the heights of Luis Suarez as a Fantasy asset but, from what we’ve seen so far, he may be as close as we can hope for this season.

The Team

A patchy home win over Southampton on the opening day of the season highlighted that Liverpool were still finding their feet after the Uruguayan’s departure. Defeat at City hardly helped instil confidence as the Reds rolled up to face a Spurs side that had yet to concede under Mauricio Pochettino but the manner of their emphatic victory suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are still a Fantasy force to be reckoned with.

Switching to a midfield diamond, with Raheem Sterling tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and debutant Mario Balotelli, the Merseysiders tore apart the Tottenham rearguard with a display that could easily have harvested more than three goals. The attacking trio now brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures that is sure to bring significant investment Liverpool’s way – heading into the next six Gameweeks (AVL, wh, EVE, WBA, qpr, HUL) without at least one of Sterling and Sturridge on board looks a risky tactic.

At the back, too, the attacking thrust offered by summer signing Alberto Moreno down the left has already come to fruition emphatically at the Lane. With Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel sidelined through injury last weekend, the Reds backline expertly marshaled their opponents in the final third, and with new boys Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo also starting alongside Moreno and Mamadou Sakho, there’s cause for optimism at both ends of the pitch for Rodgers’ side right now.

The Talking Point

As Costa headed into the weekend with question marks hanging over him, Fantasy managers loaded up on City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero for the home clash against Stoke. Their failure to deliver, allied with United’s toils at Burnley and Sturridge’s blank at Spurs, came at a time where many budget forwards put their names forward as potential contenders for our three-man frontlines.

After three Gameweeks of the new season, five of the top eight forwards are priced at 6.0 and under. Steven Naismith and Andreas Weimann have already delivered 20+ points for their owners, while Saido Berahino, Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa are all pushing to be this year’s Jay Rodriguez.

Right now, with such a wealth of budget options to consider, many may be tempted to spend big in midfield and potentially snap up Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the back, bringing more 3-5-2 formations into contention than ever before.

For others, it’s only a matter of time before the premium forwards start to deliver, though. As mentioned, Liverpool’s run of matches will surely afford Sturridge the chance to get amongst the goals again, while the arrival of Radamel Falcao at United looks very tempting – crucially, the Colombian would be a real differential to the 42%-owned Wayne Rooney and is priced at 11.0 to Rooney’s 10.5. With the prolific Costa looking unstoppable, a trio of heavy-hitters up top looks just as enticing.

For the sake of our Fantasy seasons, though, we need the likes of Naismith and Ivanovic to flourish in order to offer more variety amongst out 15-man squads. It can only be beneficial to the Fantasy games and managers alike that, as we head into Gameweek 4, there’s less agreement than ever on the 2014/15 “template team”.

Regarding Aarons, he's a 5.0 mid from Newcastle. Has come on as a sub in 2 of the first 3 games(20,31mins). Plays as a winger I believe.

Came on for a dire Gouffran vs Palace, and looked pretty good, scored a goal. Might be decent option if he manages a starting role for Newcastle.

Yeah, Boyd looks like your best bet at 4.4m tbh(assuming he goes straight in). Don't think it's worth spending more than 4.5m just for 1 or 2 fixtures.

Looks good. Schneiderlinn I think just had one good game and will not score enough. Zaha might be worth a shot if you have enough money. I would look at Sturridge. Liverpool face Villa(Senderos & Vlaar), West Ham ( Collins & Reid), Everton( Jagielka & Distin), WBA ( not too slow), QPR ( Ferdinand & Caulker). Those defences are quite slow against a very fast & skillful Sturridge

Try telling that to "New York City FC". Anyone want a bet they will start buying big in the next few years and loaning a few over to their Manchester half?

Try making a FF squad of all-Chelski players.

3 legit and others out on loan. I've got 3 + bertrand + pva in my legit squad - could add the likes of Moses, chalobah, atsu.

The loan system is a joke and needs looking at, should just be for U21s or maybe U23s. And you shouldnt be allowed to loan to same league.

      Chelsea arent breaking any rules.

The rules do need changing though.

Have to admit, its fantastic business by Chelsea. They made most of these signings before the FFP rules became more imposed, possibly anticipating it, and effectively stopped other clubs snatching up and coming star players. Its effectively like having an overseas Academy who all get first team football. Win-win for them - surprised others haven't done this to the same extent.

It's how they're fighting FFP. Bought masses of players before it kicked in and sell 2 or 3 every year to offset purchases.

As a chelsea fan it is strange (yet refreshing) to hear that Chelsea are now running themselves more prudently.

I really cant believe that the Loan system and FFP arent more debated and challenged by those in the know, its like they are both accepted by football clubs. Gives the big clubs huge advantage imo.

It's a dubious way of getting round the system but it's within the rules and, I think, a clever strategy. Of course it required massive investment at the start but it's not like Chelsea couldn't afford it. I'm just surprised loads of others didn't do the same and, yes, I'm a bit surprised people (other than Wenger) aren't kicking up a stink.

I think Chelsea played the game more cannily than most but I don't think you could call it prudent.

i'm sure they'll make some money selling some of them on. But there isn't a lot of quality there. I'd say that he following are all very poor:
      Traore, Kakuta, McEachran, Moses, Wallace

maybe but they will get money in for each of them if they were to sell. and the homegrown ones would sell for a premium. 20+ x a few million is a lot of money.

should make them a bit more solid

They'll be no match for El Tigre though

We are now a team of big strong players, I think. Looks like the 3,5,3 formation has been dispensed with whih will make a big difference. Worth bearing in mind QPR broke their cs record in the championship last season with 8 in a row, which believe me ain't easy to achieve.

Nothing too wrong with it as it is. But then I had very similar last week and decided I *needed* Aguero and Sanchez - so I WC'd.
Depends how much you think you *need* Aguero and/or Falcao, I guess

In terms of a captain choice for Gameweek 4, for me it boils down to either Costa, Sterling, or Sturridge. Costa is a stick-on for at least one goal, but at the moment I am struggling to look past Sterling. He was at the heart of almost every Liverpool attack against Spurs, and although Villa have started the season impressively at the back, I think that Liverpool will hit them for 4 or 5 at Anfield - especially if Vlaar's injury keeps him out of the game. Granted, Liverpool have struggled against Villa at home in recent seasons but, as i said, I think that this time round they will come out well on top.

agreed. if Vllar doesn't play it will be a slaughter. otherwise maybe 2 nil to Pool.

Sterling should have scored twice against Spurs, the chance he had in the second half where he beat a few defenders in the box, he bottled the finish but he is getting himself in better positions more and more these days so can see him getting a brace against Villa.

Lots of head vs heart decisions this week.

Of course head says an 8 pointer is ridiculous. Heart says get Falcao.

Head says get Naismith. Heart says go for Danny 'Pele' Welbeck.

Mirallas could be the next bandwagon. But then, so could Tadic.
Both good options, but both are slight gambles too - assuming you need to ditch another ace mid to get them,
I'm having similar dilemma. Leaning towards Mirallas at the mo.
