Technical Area

The Technical Area – Analysing Balotelli’s First Liverpool Appearance

All eyes were on White Hart Lane last Sunday as Liverpool rolled up to face Tottenham with new boy Mario Balotelli on board for the first time. After tasting defeat at City in their previous match, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to form in style, sweeping aside their previously unbeaten hosts with a 3-0 win which could easily have reaped further reward for the Reds’ Fantasy owners.

Balotelli may have failed to play a part in any of the Merseysiders’ three strikes, but after starting alongside Daniel Sturridge up front as Rodgers rolled out a midfield diamond, there’s hope he will retain his spot in the XI as the Reds brace themselves for a very kind run of fixtures.

involvement

As the average position map from the weekend encounter shows, Balotelli (number 45) found himself in possession in more withdrawn areas than strike partner Sturridge (number 15), with Raheem Sterling (number 13) almost on a par with the Italian at the tip of the midfield diamond.

Over his 61 minutes on the pitch, Balotelli produced a total of 38 touches, with 18 arriving in the final third. While this was fewer than Sturridge’s 26 and Sterling’s 23 in the attacking area, the new boy was just as involved overall as Sterling – an average of 1.6 minutes per touch equalled the youngster’s and was superior to Sturridge’s 2.6. The Liverpool players also sought out Balotelli at a quicker pace than his fellow forward – an average of 3.6 minutes per pass received was up on Sturridge’s 3.8 at the Lane.

When on the ball, the Italian international’s distribution left a lot to be desired, though. Balotelli made just eight successful passes over his time on the park – half the number of Sturridge (16) and also fewer than Sterling’s 11. A mere four accurate passes in the final third harbours back to the fact he produced just a single assist for City, though in a sense he can be forgiven, as this was his first match in Liverpool colours and he has yet to become accustomed to his team-mates. Indeed, an 80.6% pass accuracy for City in 2012/13 suggests he’ll soon improve upon a lowly 50% success rate.

In terms of goal threat, Balotelli registered some very impressive stats against Spurs. Despite playing 61 minutes to Sturridge’s 94, he registered double the number of touches in the box (four to two) and equalled his fellow forward’s five attempts on goal.

Crucially, though, four of Balotelli’s attempts arrived inside the area – essentially, he fired an effort with every touch in the penalty box – while Sturridge managed just two close-range attempts in their first appearance as a partnership. Sterling’s three efforts inside the box took his total to six close-range shots for the season – more than any other midfielder – and underlines just why many feel he’s near essential for the upcoming schedule.

Even when it came to work-rate, there was promise. After the match, Brendan Rodgers suggested that handing Balotelli more responsibility will bring out his best performances and, encouragingly for the Reds boss, the new signing challenged for four aerial duels – more than any other Liverpool player at the Lane and significantly up on his average of 1.7 in his final season at the Etihad. Defensively, his four recoveries and three clearances were also way better than his City 2012/13 stats (1.4 and 0.4 respectively) and also hints that he may well be prepared to buy into the Merseysiders’ team ethic; certainly, the numbers back up the fact that – as many onlookers noted – there was no standing around or posturing as the play went on around him.

Granted, 61 minutes is far from enough of a sample size to make any assumptions but Balotelli’s first match in a Reds shirt was encouraging both from a Liverpool and Fantasy perspective. At 10.0 to Sturridge’s 11.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, though, there was certainly enough on offer from the new boy to indicate he may well be capable of rivalling his team-mate for both goals and our Fantasy affections over the upcoming run of fixtures.

Depends how you look at it, everything about rooney screams great fantasy prospect but he's in terrible form and so is his team. Balotelli on the other hand is known to start strongly at new clubs, played well in his debut and should have had a hattrick, and liverpool have a great run of fixtures.

Also wouldn't put it passed mario taking the odd direct free kick for liverpool

I decided after watching the game on Sunday that I was doing Naismith to Balotelli. But I want to pull the trigger as late as possible in case of injuries. How many net transfers in does Balotelli need to rise? Is there a system so that we can work out price rises for ourselves?

Thinking of going with Dzeko instead of Aguero and using the extra cash elsewhere. Is this crazy talk?

Man City only have 3 strikers and Dzeko is the only one who can hold the ball up. Is Aguero really worth the extra 3.6m?

With the amount of games City have I think all 3 will get game time its just a case of where you think he'll play each of them

I've got Jovetic and think he's more likely to play Aguero against Bayern so I'm sticking with Jove for a week or 2

If you want to save cash, you're better picking up Welbeck.

      - Little threat to starting berth
      - Team likely to keep up with City for goals scored
      - Eager to prove (ala sturridge at Liverpool)
      - Saves you even more than Dzeko for similar expected return

If you want points, Aguero can't be rivalled. If you want starts, steady points, cash saving..then Welbeck over Dzeko.

I'm in the same boat as you Bubz.

If RVP Rooney Falcao are all declared fit and ready to go, I'm going with the former. I have 2 FTs, Mata -> Sterling and save one FT.

I keep thinking ditching Jovetic might be a little premature... he's started every game in PL so far and if he keeps starting he'll be a -steal- at that price. 2 goals in 3 matches. I'm thinking I'll hold firm until he gives me a reason not to.

What's the best strategy for finishing top 10k in FPL?

Playing it safe or taking gambles? Going with your gut or going with the stats?

It's early days this seaosn but I've played it safe with my choices so far and I'm doing okay, can't help but think if I just trusted my instincts a little more then I'd have 15-20 more points and then I'd be sitting top 10k already

I find that context is important ie

If you finish in the top 30,000 from 3,000,000, you're in the top 1%.

      That's not bad going.

Too much *dead wood* to think you're actually going up against 3mil.

Not caring where you sit in GW3 would be a good start.

Few, if any, of those that finished Top 10k were there all season & most didn't get there until the second half of the year.

Finally, the Top 10k had about a 10/20% turnover in the Final 3 weeks so as long as you're close you've got a shot.

Balo or rooney are both good choices. I just don't see the point in wasting a transfer as I feel rooney will score well this week. There's that many good strikers this year it's better to stick with 1 for a while instead of changing every week as their bound to score when you have got rid

Yup stats and using my eyes. Balotelli has had nearly as many efforts in 60 mins as Rooney has had in three games. Stats help but you have to watch the games and see the mentality of the player too

So your stats book say anything about *sample size*?

This isn't a knock on Balo or Roo for that matter but, you shouldn't site one stat from 60min of play to justify much of anything.

I mean Rooney managed 7 goal attempts in his first game, right?

An but that was without RVP or Falcao in the team. He has produced nothing like that production since. You have to trust your eyes as well as the stats and he doesn't look anywhere near as hungry as Balotelli. And Balo is in a free scoring side against a team who struggle against teams with good movement. It's a punt but a considered one

Next, I'm pointing out that your logic is flawed.

You could have said the same thing about Rooney's first game against Swans.

He "looked like he had a point to prove" & "my eyes" show me " the mentality of the player".

If Balo has a cpl of duds will he be cast aside as well?

60mins, 3 games, these just aren't enough to make such bold claims...

You are right I could've said that about Rooney's first game but I didn't watch that match so I would just be using cold stats. I've tried to use the stats and my eyes to form my opinion. I've watched him in two matches and he was barely involved so it's my opinion to get rid. As I stated it's a punt and I enjoy having a risk every now and again, we are just sharing opinions

After watching Rooney in the last few matches and Balotelli against Spurs I checked some stats and did Rooney -> Balotelli last night. I'm hoping the considered gamble pays off!!

      JWP.

      - Siggy can pick up points anywhere
      - Zaha at home to Burnley will never be a plummer fixture
      - JWP not even guarenteed to start and only shares set-pieces

Took a 4 point hit last weekend to get this team.

    Begovic, Krul
Cahill, Caulker, Hutton, Chambers, C Davies
    Fabregas, Sterling, Ramsey, Siggy, Marney
    Costa, Rooney, Naismith

Do I need to wildcard now. Tempted to just do Moreno for Chambers for -4.

      Absolutely Not.

When deciding to wildcard, look at your best starting XI (and forget about subs. temporarily). If it's still decent, which yours is, then no need to WC.

Yea I'm trying to find a good structure at the moment that will be able to slot players in and out.

        Can't decided between traditional 343., 352 , 352 hybrid or 3 big strikers
Think I might have wildcarded too early, there a lot of guesswork involved

Wasted WC imo but you'll gain team value at least.

Prefer the 3 4 3 , 2 decenct strikers and rotate the 3rd depending on form - i'd start with Adebayor and go from there.

    How about this WC team?

    Begovic, Given
    Moreno, Clyne, Chester, Wisdom, Duff
    Ramsey, Sterling, Siggy, Chadli, JWP
    Falcao, Sturridge, Costa,

Who's your 3rd striker? If getting Schn. allows you to get a decent 3rd striker and play 3-4-3 get him.

I wouldn't want to play 3-5-2 relying on Tadic each week just yet.

Just saw some Falcao goals, and here's what I like:

    1) he's great on both feet
    2) strong and balanced, will have no problem adjusting to premier league
    3) selfish, loves skinning 3 defenders and not passing off to slam home himself
    4) he's quick and prepared to take in defenders

I'm really hoping he has a big impact because he looks like he's be great to watch regardless of FPL returns!

I'd encourage you to have a looksy:

Let's face it, he's a world class striker. Absolute top. As a PL fan I'm looking forward to watching him.

For FPL though I'm taking a wait-and-see approach. Not really happy with my United buys so far, so I'm not RACING to get more players.

No worries! Bony seems to be playing more as a link player this year than a finisher of chances. I was tempted to ditch him instead of Rooney for Balotelli but Rooney just looks like the earth is on his shoulders atm and is more likely to lose value, which would mean the potential Falcao transfer couldn't happen without a hit

Timing seems a bit overeager IMO... hmm. Do you have two FTs? If yes, I'd be tempted to do Bony -> Welbeck and save one. If you have just one FT, I'd just save.

No time like the present D!
        Mata > Sterling done,
1ft left it's just that I ain't happy with Bony and Rooney and I've no real problem taking a -4 to do it, been conservative so far but there's so many options out there.
I suppose I'm afraid of missing a haul or even possibly selling a haul!

    My attack:

    Hazard, Ramsey, Mata. Siggy, 4.5
    Jovetic, Rooney, Costa

    I'm planning
    Rooney + Mata -> Sterling + Falcao
with my 2 FT after all international matches are over.
That means keeping Jovetic for a little while more.

Do you think that's good idea?
