Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 5

Our Monday afternoon regular is rolled out once again, as we scour the Premier League treatment rooms to assess the players who picked up injuries over the weekend action.

Aston Villa
The Midlands outfit were hit hard by a virus prior to the weekend home defeat to Arsenal. Paul Lambert confirmed Darren Bent and Nathan Baker missed out altogether, whilst Ashley Westwood also failed to feature – he was initially named in the starting XI but was forced to drop out. Andi Weimann was also subbed off at the break after struggling to overcome the same problem.

Burnley
Clarets midfielder David Jones was subbed off after 86 minutes of the weekend goalless draw against Sunderland with “a minor thigh injury”.

Chelsea
Ramires was withdrawn on 63 minutes having suffered a knee injury. Early reports suggest that the Brazilian could face a term of absence with the midfielder undergoing scans early this week.

Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Philippe Coutinho missed the trip to West Ham due to a groin problem, while Jordan Henderson is being assessed after picking up a hip complaint.

Man United
Jonny Evans was withdrawn after just 30 minutes of United’s loss at Leicester with a leg problem and, post-match, Louis van Gaal admitted:

“I don’t know how bad Evans is. We have to wait for a scan tomorrow but he is on crutches.”

Newcastle
Cheick Tiote will be assessed after limping off towards the end of Saturday’s home draw with Hull.

QPR
The problems are building up in midfield for Harry Redknapp. Joey Barton and Jordon Mutch were passed fit for Saturday’s home clash with Stoke after heading into the match as doubts due to hamstring problems – both players were subsequently subbed off with a recurrence of the injuries, whilst Sandro missed out altogether due to a knee complaint.

Southampton
Both Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse were forced off with ankle problems in the weekend win at Swansea. New boy Toby Alderweireld missed Liberty clash with a minor hamstring problem but is expected to be back next weekend.

Sunderland
Steven Fletcher and Ricardo Alvarez missed the Black Cats’ trip to Burnley due to a calf complaint and knock respectively, though the latter has since been passed fit for tomorrow’s Capital One clash with Stoke. Gus Poyet has also revealed that Emmanuel Giaccherini was forced off on his first start of the season and will be assessed:

“Giaccherini had plenty of energy, going between the lines and I think he was one of our best players. That was the idea of playing him; to create that little bit more. He was thereabouts, so it’s not bad from him. Unfortunately, he took a big knock which we need to check today.”

Swansea
Dwight Tiendalli missed the weekend home defeat to Southampton with a slight groin problem.

West Brom
Giorgos Samaras missed out through injury as the Baggies picked up a 1-0 win at Spurs yesterday.

West Ham
Midfielder Cheick Kouyate is set to undergo scans after picking up a groin problem against Liverpool on Saturday evening – the summer signing stayed on the field after Sam Allardyce had made all three substitutions.

Do we think Zaha might play this weekend?
He is tempting to play, but can't see who to drop...
(Sterling, Fabregas, Siggy, Di Maria, Zaha)

    a) Ramsey (TOT)
    b) Chadli )ars)
    c) Naismith (liv)

Chadli I reckon. Benching Ramsey would be stupid, he has the potential to explode in those sorts of games, similar with Naismith if he gets a rest midweek up against that Liverpool defence.

He's likely to leave in GW8 for Boyd, my current plan is to save next week then in GW8

Chadli and Naismith to Boyd and Welbz and either DDG to Forster or Caulker to Chambers for -4

  4. The Ramsey Exit Conundrum
    Parm
    • 12 Years
    9 years, 7 months ago

I've currently got Ramsey(with Sterling & Di María as my other big hitters). Usually i'd be looking to jump ship after just one assist in his last three league games(and a half hearted game in the Champions League) but there simply isn't another midfield i'm greatly interested in.

Özil in looks like a bit of a knee-jerk. There's no doubt Wenger will play a 4-1-4-1 now and again purely because of Wilshere(pushing Özil out wide), and as AB posted previously he's not actually playing as a full on No.10 in a 4-2-3-1 anyway. We'll have to wait and see on that one, but if he is playing in a 4-2-3-1 more permanently then i'll be looking to get him in come GW8.
Sánchez is a great option, but I just don't see much value at £10.5m, especially now that he won't be playing as a false 9 and Walcott returning soon for added rotation threat too.

Fábregas looks like the prime target, but I don't see the appeal. The fixtures look set to dry up(not dry up exactly, but the fixtures look pretty bipolar), and as Fábregas proved yesterday he isn't much of a big game player, particularly in Mourinho's system.
Hazard looks in a similar state, although if he gets a longer stint in that No.10 role against the weaker sides he could explode, but after a frustrating few weeks of owning him I can't take the risk again.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I just can't take myself to bring him out purely because the options on offer aren't a significant upgrade.

That comment about Fabregas is a lot of rubbish. There aren't many fixtures where Chelsea will play defensively like that, and even then Fabregas will be in the hole a lot of the time. I had him benched yesterday in favour of Tadic, but Fabregas almost got an assist on the Costa shot that hit the post and I'd predict that even if he doesn't produce in one or two of the tough games his output in the easier games should easily make up for that.

      1. Parm
        • 12 Years

I may've over exaggerated the Fábregas comments slightly but I really don't rate him that highly. Worth noting Chelsea have Arsenal, United & Liverpool in the next 6 so I feel a reference to Mourinho's defensive tactics are pretty relevant.

Not so sure, I watched the second half and whilst he controls the game for Southampton the real chances are created for Long & Pellé, his goal threat is pretty low for a mid-priced midfielder, much like Fábregas but Tadic doesn't have the assist to back it up.

He had plenty of key passes though, its only a matter of time before pelle scores them. Moving centrally when Mane comes in will boost Tadic as well.

Not quite similar situation but finally gave Hazard the boot and took a punt on Chadli for the next 2 GWs.

I'm getting a bit impatient with the big hitting mids though, i'm tempted to downgrade to a Mirallas or a Dyer and invest the cash elsewhere but I know i'll want Walcott once he returns 🙁

To be fair, Sterling and ADM have been more than adequate. The only 'worry' is Ramsey. But I think this is where you choose to play the numbers game or not--Enough people own him that him blanking doesn't affect you THAT much, but wander away and a huge haul leaves you behind.

I'd give Rambo one more game--The NLD at the very least. If he comes up short in such an emotionally charged game due to a poor performance or Wenger tasking him to take a conservative role then by all means, move on. Untill then, I'd call Rambo>anyone a risk especially as you already have ADM.

Fab, Sterling and ADM have done me fine.

can't figure out why to drop Ramsey when GW8 is almost here

set-pieces and pens will mean he'll always pick up points, but doesn't seem worth the extra over Sterling

No but he could double up for a bit. I was debating it myself until I heard Sturridge coming back early.

      3. Parm
        • 12 Years

Set-pieces are obviously key(and reduced penalties without Suárez) but £8.9m seems a bit hefty for a player that usually slots in between the two centre-backs when in possession. If he's fielded further up the pitch(where he belongs imo) then he'll be worth it, but not in the current system.

Watching the games he looks worthless but he still picks up the points somehow. Anyway I've gone for Fab myself, safest option at this stage IMO.

Di Maria's first goal was a total fluke, his second was great...but also his only shot on target.

How can you own Di Maria, and not rate Fabregas?

Makes no sense to me, basically the same player, but Fab is cheaper, playing for a better team and will get more assists (which is where both of their points will come from).

In retrospect the hit I took last week to bring in Baines & Marney (should've been Boyd)paid off since I gained back 6 of those points w/ Baines.
Although, was it worth it? When Clyne was on my bench & netted 8?
Played Caulker, PvA & Baines this week, all performed as expected.

    1. rickardinho
      • 9 Years

Give and take. I sold Caulker to Naylor on Thursday night and missed Caulkers points, but wouldn't have played Clyne if I had kept Caulker and he had 8 points himself so it ended up as a fairly solid move. Happy to be rid of Caulker either way.

Not sure taking hits is worth it though, especially for defenders. I only transfer them on a FT and if I have no bigger issues up front.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years

All solid points, Gw5 was just hit frenzy. The Baines move is long term though & wanted to take advantage of the 6.9 price, it was either him or Welbeck since i only had 6.9 to splash.

Would you consider a hit worthy to catch potential double risers when you have very low TV?

        1. rickardinho
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

You should always pick players you think can score points first and foremost. If those players then happen to rise thats an added bonus. I was tempted by Ramsey>ADM for a hit just to ride the price rise, but decided against it as I don't think ADM will outscore him in the next 5-6 fixtures.

I was doing a brief research about the players who have been the best according to their statistics. The team comes out to be like -

    Fabianski
De Laet - Ivanovic - Shawcross
Hazard - Di Maria - Herrera - Fabregas
    Costa - Welbeck - Pelle

This line up only costs 84.4. I have excluded the players who are impressive in terms of stats but are either rotation risk or injured.

I have done a research for some players also. If possible have a look at it -

      A few comments:

      - Fabianski's stats are probably inflated by having two easy home CS's against Burnley and WBA, and they racking up saves at Chelsea despite conceding 4. He's unlikely to have two easier home games all season than those two.
      - How often will Shawcross score? That obviously inflates his ratings.
      - Not convinced by Herrera.
      - Ulloa's stats are superior to Welbeck this season.
      - De Laet is slightly surprising.

Mate, the flexibility of Fabianski and his performance in 5 weeks have been impressive IMO. He performed well against United in the first week and Swansea is on a good run of fixtures.
You won't buy a defender on his potential to score but his defensive ability. Shawcross is a bonus points magnet if Stoke gets a CS and Stoke has a nice run of fixtures.
Herrera according yo that price looks tempting being nailed. Ulloa has played more games than Welbeck. De Late has surprised me as well

          Mate,

I never said Fabianski hadn't been impressive. I was simply suggesting why he might be rated higher than someone like Forster who has been equally impressive at least.

Good point on Shawcross. Hard to justify him being one of the top 3 FPL defenders right now though since he's only kept 1 CS in 5.

When I compared Ulloa to Welbeck I looked at averages over the last 2 games. Stats superior.

          🙂

I totally understand mate. I couldn't do the research briefly on the goalkeepers but I had 5 goalkeepers on radar - Fabianski, Mannone, Forster, Heaton and McGregor.

Raised this question earlier - WC when team doing well ?

GW 8 = A distinct switch in positive fixtures for some teams - International break - Why not take advantage and kick on ? Thoughts on this ? Or just stay strong / plod on ?

I genuinely think GW8 is the time to pop these things, no matter how well we're doing, and laugh at all those who have used it before and now have to frantically redo their squads after injuries and fixtures decimate their teams

I was planning to do my WC in GW8, but I will try to save for 2FT's instead. The only big transfer I foresee myself doing is getting Baines and possibly Walcott in, as I already have a team that is set up to be strong post-GW8 anyways.

At 3-2 you could argue Utd were "screwed by the ref"...

But a title-contending team would have just been spurred on to really trash them by scoring two or three more...rather than totally capitulate.

At 5-3, nobody can blame the ref or say Leicester didn't deserve to win.

      Leicester

United at 3-1 up should have had the game won, but didn't know how to close it out

Then, when the percieved injustice over the peno occured they simply lost all composure and started making basic errors.

Leicester did everything they had to do

Was the incident with the first peno wrong? yes. Should it have had that result?, absolutely not. A team that implodes like that deserves nothing

We were robbed by the ref to give up the 2nd goal.

Besides that we just totally capitulated, which was pathetic.

Rooney, Smalling and Rojo should shoulder the blame for the 3rd - 5th goals. Blackett obviously culpable in the 5th goal as he gave up the pen, but a poor touch from Rojo forcing him into a poor hoof up the field put him out of position and sold Blackett out.

assuming nothing in the bank, you've got 16.8

either Di Maria (9.8) or Hazard (10.0) with Adam Johnson (6.3)

either Tadic (7.5) or Mirallas (7.4) with Sterling (8.8)

personally would go with Sterling & Mirallas

              there's no one at 7.1

that's why I went down to AJ at 6.3... at least has set pieces and decent fixtures in his future...

you could get Siggy, but you already have Dyer

you could get Henderson, but I'm not that excited

              or Puncheon (same)
