The Technical Area – Assessing Ramsey’s Villa Performance

A change of tactics from Arsene Wenger helped Arsenal sweep aside Villa last weekend and recover from a midweek humbling at Dortmund. The Gunners boss benched Alexis Sanchez and switched from his new 4-1-4-1 formation to last year’s 4-2-3-1 system, which crucially allowed Mesut Ozil to move to the role in “the hole” behind Danny Welbeck.

Both players silenced the critics by chipping in with a goal and assist in the 3-0 victory and Ozil, who had previously been fielded on the Arsenal left, felt the switch was fundamental to his side’s success.

“We played a bit differently, in our more usual system. I think that we were a bit better, a bit more organised and in the end that led to our success.”

involvement

From a Fantasy perspective, though, one of the main points from the weekend encounter was Aaron Ramsey’s shift to the double-pivot. As the average position map from the match shows, Ramsey (number 16) was tasked with adding a little more solidity alongside Mikel Arteta (number 8) as Wenger looked to tighten up in the middle after being completely overrun by Dortmund last midweek. Ozil (number 11) and Welbeck (number 23) moved left to create space and receive the ball whenever Santi Cazorla (number 19) drifted in from the flank, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (number 15) also played fairly centrally from his starting position on the right, with the Gunners’ full-backs, Calum Chambers (number 21) and Kieran Gibbs (number 3) supplying the width from deep.

Already, over 51,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have parted company with the Welshman this week. One glance at his statistics over 78 minutes on the field, when compared to his Gameweek 1-4 averages, certainly indicates a lack of impact. In the final third of the pitch, Ramsey’s touches slumped from 41.8 to 25, as did his passes received (29.5 to 18) and successful passes (24 to 11). Ramsey’s touches in the box also dropped from a previous average of four down to two and, having now failed to score in each of his last three, the exodus is picking up pace.

When assessing Ramsey’s performance, though, it’s crucial to look at the overall picture both from a team and match perspective.

Arsenal chalked up a massive 72.5% possession at Villa Park last weekend – up on their Gameweek 1-4 average of 61.6% – though it’s somewhat telling that their team average for touches in the final third dropped significantly, down from a previous of 274.5 to 212 on Saturday.

Furthermore, their Gameweek 1-4 average for touches in the box also slipped from 28.5 to 21 against Paul Lambert’s side, whilst the Gunners fired an effort every 10.3 minutes last weekend compared to a far quicker pace of 5.8 minutes per attempt beforehand.

Essentially, then, after scoring three times in six minutes during the first period, Wenger’s side were happy to keep ball and never really needed to extend themselves as an attacking force thereafter. With a 3-0 advantage after 36 minutes, the Villa Park encounter became an exercise in possession for the visitors – it seems more likely that they attacked less in comparison to previous matches because they simply didn’t need to. Saturday was the first time this term where Arsenal went in at the break with an advantage – and a substantial one at that – and it was therefore unnecessary to bomb forward in the final third to the same extent as in previous Gameweeks.

In terms of involvement, for example, Ramsey’s minutes per touch (0.8) remained exactly the same, whilst the upturn in possession meant his minutes per pass received actually quickened from 1.1 to 0.9 before he was withdrawn with 12 minutes remaining, suggesting he was far from a peripheral figure.

Indeed, given the drop in team stats, then, Ramsey’s attacking numbers, when compared to those of his team-mates, can be looked upon in a different light. His 25 touches in the final third mirrored Welbeck’s and was just one fewer than Ozil managed over 93 minutes. He also received the same number of passes in the final third as Ozil (18), and while he was somewhat sloppy in possession in the final third, with a 73.3% accuracy down from 80% beforehand, he still produced a couple of key passes – joint-top for the Gunners along with Welbeck and Ozil. The Welshman also managed two attempts on goal – again, the equal of Ozil and a tally bettered only by Welbeck.

Certainly, Ramsey’s stats are worth monitoring – a three-match goal drought, for example, looks the main concern here as opposed to Saturday’s showing. Delving into the weekend numbers, however, suggests that, relative to his team-mates, Ramsey still offered enough to suggest he’s far from off-form. Granted, the data is indicative of the Welshman – and his fellow Gunners – playing with the handbrake on but it’s fair to say that Wenger’s side won’t be able to coast through many matches in a similar manner this season and will, far more often than not, still be reliant on Ramsey’s well-timed runs from deep to make the difference.

Potentially poor, but justifiable (by my reckoning) transfers for me this week.

Adebayor, Balotelli, Ramsey -> Costa, Pelle, ADM -8

First hits of the season and it's a -8, which I'm not fond of. H/ever, I felt that these sacrifices had to be made, for a probably WC in 2 GW's time.

    Morning DZ.
Firstly I own Costa so this is not intentionally raising doubts to make me feel better.

Am I over-thinking this game? Am starting to doubt his pitch time this weekend with the ‘easiest’ fixture for him and Chelsea over the next 8 days-

    SAT 27 SEP 2014 – Chelsea v Aston Villa
    TUE 30 SEP 2014 – Sporting v Chelsea
    SUN 5 OCT 2014 – Chelsea v Arsenal

After drawing to Schalke at home the Sporting game takes on even more importance imo. Just me thinking this way? Looking at those 3 fixtures over 8 days and knowing Costa’s ability to play a certain amount of minutes in a week, if you were Mourinio where would you prioritize?

On another note, B Rodgers is a tool. 120mins for Sterling, who he ‘needs to protect’ in the League Cup vs Middesb?

personally i prefer owning hazard, as I can see him going mental in a game.
double points for fabregas *Should* be a rarity, and i prefer those that can explode.

His free kicks and corners do make him appealing though... i think with this in mind, its hard to justify getting rid if you own him

Personally keeping Fab. Need to whisper this quietly so dont get berated, thinking long term when Wally back will drop Siggy for him. Long term-

      Wally/Sterling/ADM/Fab/4.5
      Costa/Rooney/Welbez

Downgrade Baines to make Rooney into Falcao/Aguero as needed

Don't lose Cesc...he is due a goal soon and his link up with Costa is already proving fruitful. Not quite so sure Falcao is going to become "essential" but Theo being back does add an extra layer of complexity.

These midfield dilemma's are handled so much easily with a midfield 5. My 5th mid is currently Tadic and I plan to do Tadic>Walcott/ADM/Hazard once his good fixtures are over around GW12, or if he doesn't score obviously. I'll have 2m itb after getting Baines to use on this upgrade, and can raise a further 0.5 by downgrading Krul if needed. 😀

TV is overrated this year. Most of the big-risers are season keepers anyways (Siggy, Fab, Sterling, Costa) so it makes no difference to my buying power having their high values. At least not at the moment.

I'm more interested in seeing my saleable assets like Lovren and Taylor go up in price, or at least avoid drops, as that is where the real money is won and lost.

Same situation, don't worry though Hazard will outscore. Historically speaking, the man always delivers.

TV is a bit knee jerky from experience though. Bought Naismith for 5.0 in Gw2, but he only netted me one goal & an assist. Still can't say if it was worth the .3 profit.

I'm confident he can still perform in that position. I'm just concerned what the majority think as they are likely to transfer him out in waves after a blank.

If Mata comes on part way through a match, he may also play up front for a while.

    Thoughts on Oviedo?

He got 4.26 points per 90 minutes last season (2g 1a) before breaking his leg in January. Today he played as a winger ahead of Garbutt at LB and with Baines the first choice you'd think he'll be played at LW more often than not this season if Baines stays fit, and 4.9 seems like a pretty decent catch for an OOP Everton LB/LW.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't be surprised to see Moreno deployed as a LW from time to time either due to his searing pace and Enrique's return to form...

I'm hoping it'll be Oviedo in Europa, Baines in EPL.

Although Everton's focus on Europa makes me a little uncomfortable.

Yeah I'm with you mate. I own those two as well as Pelle as of this week and am a bit pissed they picked this game to score in. The cat is out of the bag as far as Tadic's under-the-radar differential status goes too. He was my best-kept secret but now I think loads of people will buy him.

Looking at the positives though, I can rest assured that I have the right fullback out of Clyne/Bertrand, and Tadic confirmed that he's on penalties and most FK's. Mane also looks like he'll win quite a few pens this season too, which was lacking without him before.

      Got exactly same midfield, then:

None of them, your team is perfect. Since you have to burn a transfer, wait until Saturday morning for the injury news, and if all healthy, consider Ramsey to Silva, Wisdom to Moore who is less likely to be benched, or if you are really convinced by Forster, option A.

I have Pieters, too. His zero points last week was not exactly awe-inspiring. And Muniesa scored a brace in the cup, so his place could be under threat in the long term. But short-term, i think that he's fine, no need to transfer.
I take it that Krul is your only playing keeper? Quite annoying, I know. But using a transfer on a keeper seems like a waste.
If you want to get Aguero, I'd do it now. You won't have 2FT most weeks, and there is nothing else that is needs immediate attention.

    Hello Mates,
    Current Team Roster:

    Heaton Myhill
    Chambers Taylor Ivan Clyne Duff
    Adm Fab Sigg Sterling Cork
    Aguero Costa Naismith

0FT, 0.1m in bank. Already took a -4 hit this week so i don't think i should transfer anymore?
    What should i do guys?
    My plans:
    A) Downgrade ivan to moore as i personally feel having an exp defender doesn't pay out really well then upgrade naismith to welbeck. Concern is welbeck's price is about to increase as i type. That plan will leave me with 1.4m.

    B) Downgrade Aguero to Welbeck and upgrade Naismith to Pelle/Lukaku (2.7m/1.4m left).

Baines seems to be the better choice compared to Ivan and would like to get walcott in but not sure who to drop in the midfield. Aguero not performing well enough for his hefty price. Already paying the price for being 40 points behind the first in my league. Any suggestions for my team?

Hi Siren, thanks for the reply. Do you think i should keep Aguero? Too much money invested that could be used to strengthen my other areas. With (Pelle/Rooney/Lukaku/Sturridge), Welbeck, Coast, I can upgrade my siggurdson to Walcott in the future. Or should i have faith in aguero, hoping he would explode like last season.

Play PvA or NTaylor this week?
I had a similar dilemma last week with NTaylor vs Clyne and my choice did not exactly work out 🙁
I had wanted to avoid playing an attacker (Sigurdsson) vs a defender (Clyne). The difference this week is that the Swans are away from home, so I'm leaning towards PvA.

Did you read that hot topic from last week on it? I had a similar dilemma but still went for Clyne and Siggy both after reading it.

Any chance of Pieters being dropped for Marc "I just scored a brace" Muniesa? I would think no, at least for now. But then again, I don't follow Stoke that closely.

Definite chance. Muniesa has been pushing him hard for that spot since he signed apparently

A lot of fans seemed to expect Muniesa to get the nod from the start of this season. Tbh I don't think scoring a brace is going to change his chances though. Same threat as before probably

    Falcao & naismith ---> welbeck & costa & 1.5mil (-8 hit)

    worth it?

not worth -8 imo, it's not that Naismith won't definitely score, and Welbs will definitely score.

      Not for -8.
The jury is still out on Falcao. He could still be a great option.

People are often reluctant to take hits, and a - 8 is practically heretical to some. But I don't regret taking a double hit to bring in Di Maria and Pelle for Zaha and Jovetic. Potentially high scoring fixtures, got in before the respective price changes, and to afford it I sold Dier, making 0.2 profit. Worth it?

The hole is still an area for decent production. But I'd rather have Falcao at this point.

He actually plays better in the hole imo but playing deeper and with Di Maria, van Persie and Falcao to share the points I'm fairly sceptical about returns.

If it was only RVP & Falcao, I wouldn't be sceptical as I'd expect him to get a fair share of assists on their goals. Its Di Maria that really takes away from Rooney's appeal. If Di Maria has a multi-week injury holding him out, I'd consider Rooney again.

I am too with the fixture this weekend but a blank and the Pig is gone. Long term would actually be happy with just Di Maria as my only Man U player with an eye on Falcao when he starts firing

So do I but whether doing Rooney --> Aguero for a hit is another matter. Couple that with Pellegrini most likely managing Aguero's minutes due to CL I have no idea what to do.

That's a tough call for sure...Even though he's playing deep, I still feel like he's a going to get great opportunities for big point hauls all year long Nailed on in that lineup!

        • 10 Years

I know he's nailed on but I just feel that apart from Di Maria, Man United's frontline is an absolute minefield with Rooney, van Persie and Falcao all having a share in the points. If Rooney was on pens I would probably hold.

Yh im feeling the same thing but 10.4 for a glorified MID is expensive, same reasoning behind not owning Sanchez.
Id like to get Pelle in but wont be doing it for a hit this week even tho i think vs QPR he could get a couple easily

That's a good point you make there about the similarity between Rooney and Sanchez in terms of being a "glorified midfielder". Do you think Rooney --> Pelle for a FT would be wise?

Sorry for the essay but just explaining my thinking behind waiting, and not particulary keen on making 3 transfers in 1 week even if it is only for -4, esp when the player im taking out is MUN captain, when i already feel slightly dirty taking Ramsey and Caulker out for ADM and Shackell

By the end of the season i can see most of the top teams owning both Rooney and Sanchez tbh no matter where both are playing as they are both great players in different ways, but at this stage of the season with both playing as they are i cant see either racking up great point hauls, but will both be top 3-5 in respective positions by end of the season.
For a FT this week id defo do Pelle over Rooney, id even go as far as saying i wouldnt mind half my players being from Saints this GW vs QPR, but i did think the same thing last week with Spurs vs WBA :O lol
United should score a couple vs WHU but who gets the points is anyones guess atm, but i do have ADM in my team aswell, but im looking at either Pelle or Mane soon (Have clyne/forster already) so im still undecided on who should have my third Saints position, but this weekend id back Pelle to outscore Rooney
