Monitor – Stewart Downing

It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

If all of the following blank this week, who would you get rid of first?

    -Ramsey
    -De Gea
    -Rooney

    Thanks in advance! 😀

Ramsey's been in poor form for longer than Rooney has and in a more settled team. And considering that I sold him two GWs ago surely you can see I'm not blowing smoke here.

I'd go for A. Chelsea may not have clean sheets at the moment but the potential for attacking returns with Ivanovic is high. As for Welbeck, he relishes being a striker I think.

I would think that Rooney would be the first out the door, as with relatively poor form, a relatively hefty price and relatively poor fixtures, he looks unworthy of ownership. The fact that he is an attacker - the group that traditionally score the most points - means that the opportunity cost of holding onto Rooney is high, as it is likely that similarly priced or cheaper offensive assets will be scoring.

Then I would say de Gea, although not for a hit. That one is simple - because I just don't see utd keeping a clean sheet, but I wouldn't make it first priority, b/c the maximum you are likely to be missing out on by not switching him out is 4 points a week, therefore representing a lower opportunity cost.

Finally - Ramsey. I think he may yet come good - and I'd be prepared to give him another 2 weeks to prove his worth (albeit against difficult opposition).

Just my 2 cents - could be completely wrong 😛

Thanks a lot mate, really appreciate the long reply!

Was thinking the same, Ramsey has HUL,sun,BUR,swa after the Chelsea game which will probably make me to keep him.

I would love to get rid of De Gea if I had a FT. But if Rooney doesn't blank and United don't keep a clean sheet on Saturday, he'll be the first out of the door for me.

Rooney out is the first priority though!

      1) Rooney
      2) De Gea
      ................
      3) Ramsey

      is how I see it

Possibly a good shout, he will be flying high after his performance v Villa. Also the north london derby is usually quite high scoring....prob worth a punt; everyone else captains Costa this week so could be a good variable

thanks guys, probably going to eriksen > tadic, in the future ddg > cheap good keeper, and colo > baines, silva > adm (if silva doesn't do great in the next fixtures), and maybe upgrading rooney to falcao/aguero (leading towards aguero if i replace silva, and falcao if i don't).

Those of you who are very certain about ditching Rooney in GW7 or 8.

An injury to RvP will dramatically change the situation and open a new perspective. Mata to come in and push Roo forward, PK duties again and at the end of ADM & Falcao's passes.

Not like RvP is going to be fit all season. i say he's worth to hold until GW8 if you have other pressing issues in your team to attend to.

I know it's gonna be worse, but MUN would still score and come on, a penalty or two should come alng the way, especially if Young gets back into the fold 😛

Sterling is as attacking, at 1.6m cheaper. Unless you want to double up 😉

We are going to score points on players dont have and miss out on loads of other hauls. The way the game should be.So many good options up front and in mid. Just cant have them all

Morning DZ. As i have loads of work to do this seems a good use of my time.

    Overall rank vs mini league.

Does the importance you place on these have any bearing on your transfers?

I understand the thought that if you have an good overall rank you will be doing well in your mini league but to me it isnt quite that simple. I should state that my sole aim for the season is to win my cash mini league and laud it over the friends i drink and watch most matches with.

My example is this- This week i had a choice of Welbeck vs Pelle to come in. I am currently 2nd in the mini league. Many other teams have Welbeck and none (yet) have Pelle. I feel the sensible 'mini league' move would have been to get Welbeck in to cover their points. I didn't and got Pelle as a chance to increase the lead/ take over.

Inversely, if i was down in mid table and had 'mini-league' thinking i would be looking for a couple of players who the teams above me didnt have while still covering the Costa, Di Maria etc.

No real point to this post! Just delaying reports and wondered if only i think like this?

I feel you pain.. It's tough deciding which options to take. I end up settling and trying to please both! And hasn't necessarily done me any favours!

Agree. A happy medium. I have a team which has many of the 'owned' players in the league. Like to add some fun and randomness. Hence Pelle. If he comes in and Welbeck blanks- heroic. Inverse- ashamed

I'm exactly the same. Mini league dominates my thinking. At 3rd position and a 30 point gap to 1st position I'm looking to cover sure-things and include differentials. Also, being pretty new to non-casual playing renders me not experienced enough to compete for high overalls.

      Not an Aguero fan.
With all his skill and influence he still doesn't usually pay back his value in FPL. Misses too many games

A lot of talk about Sturridge here with his fixtures.
It would allow an upgrade for Chadli too.

So, what's the final verdict on Rooney...playing deeper, many players sharing the goals and assists at united etc....but fixture is a good one this week.

Would you switch him to Pelle (vs.QPR) for FT or wait and see...? Yes or no?

I don't get it why to wait, if he's playing deeper in all games as it seems, it must affect his points, right..? DiMaria on set pieces and corners as well, sharing them...

Tempted by Aguero, but too much uncertainty about minutes currently...

Thanks for your comment...I do have DiMaria, so probably will do Rooney to Pelle, fixtures turn worse for United and Southampton's are good...even though it doesn't feel good to get Rooney out. Would consider Falcao but don't like United's fixtures....

Rooney, Ramsey in similar boats ATM.
Played deeper in their last game and not as effective as last season.
