Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 8 – The Weak

On Wednesday we took our first look at the upcoming fixtures over Gameweeks 8-13 and assessed the teams with Strong schedules over that period. Today it’s the turn of the less fortunate sides. In the main, Fantasy managers are mostly unaffected by the worst of the schedule, with relatively low-ownership sides such as QPR, Hull and Sunderland bearing the brunt of the fixture list’s ire, although Man United are about to face their first real test, posing questions for owners of Louis van Gaal’s premium-priced assets.

QPR

“frisking

Pinned to the foot of the table after failing to make the most of their easier fixtures, Harry Redknapp’s side now have a terrible month or so ahead, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City lying in wait over the next four Gameweeks. This is a team with both form and fixtures against them and a defence that has so far only kept out Sunderland, and looks unlikely to improve any time soon. Any remaining owners of Steven Caulker may be minded to thank him for his Gameweek 5 goal and move on, while Rob Green will be in need of save points. Likewise, an attack that has mustered just four goals looks highly unlikely to prosper, taking Charlie Austin off the table as a contender.

After these fixtures are done, though, the Hoops do have a rather decent schedule up to and including the Christmas period, but they will have to turn their form around quite dramatically at both ends of pitch to persuade managers to consider investment.

Hull

“frisking

Defeated just twice so far, Steve Bruce’s side have given a good account of themselves after a summer filled with new arrivals. Even so, the Tigers haven’t brought a great deal of Fantasy appeal as they’ve struggled to shut teams out and their attacking points have been spread just a little too thinly, with the possible exception of Nikica Jelavic. The icing on the cake is the turning of the fixture list against them, as the next six Gameweeks includes trips to Arsenal, Liverpool and Man United.

Ironically, James Chester is now back in the side after Bruce reverted to a 3-5-2 formation that paid off with a clean sheet, but the timing doesn’t encourage investment. Mo Diame has popped up with three goals in four appearances, but the returns of the Senegalese look likely to slow down against this calibre of opposition. Nikica Jelavic has scored four goals and would possibly have blinked brighter on Fantasy radars before now if it hadn’t been for the remarkable competition in his price bracket. As it is, he’s likely to stay off the radar, at least until the fixtures really clear around Gameweek 17. At that point, we will have seen more of his team-mate Abel Hernandez and be better placed to make a more informed judgement over his potential.

Sunderland

“frisking

Having toiled for much of the season, Gus Poyet finally got the mix right as the Black Cats exploded into life to put three past Stoke and earn their first victory of the campaign. The timing could have been better for Fantasy managers as the fixtures take a marked nosedive – the next six Gameweeks include four unappealing ties against Southampton, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea. For all the progress Poyet has made, Sunderland’s Fantasy assets are rather unlikely to profit from these fixtures.

In defence, Patrick van Aanholt’s move from Chelsea has made him quite popular, at least amongst our community, and he’s earned his owners fair rewards; the time has probably come to move him on, though. Vito Mannone could still pay his way with save points (he’s shown himself more than capable in that regard) but clean sheets look a bit too optimistic to hope for. A midfield which started brightly has waned of late, though Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham, have only just started to blossom – again, though, investment ahead of these fixtures seems unwise.

BE WARY OF

Crystal Palace
Well beaten by Hull, Neil Warnock’s reign at Selhurst Park has brought mixed success so far. Palace are still a more attacking bunch than under previous boss Tony Pulis and some of their assets could yet do very well for their value but the time to gamble probably isn’t now, as the Eagles square up to Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool in the next five Gameweeks. After that, though, the pastures turn greener and Martin Kelly and Jason Puncheon could pique our interest, while even Marouane Chamakh could find his way into Fantasy squads if he impresses against the big guns.

Man United
Overcoming early season disappointments to rise to fourth place in the league, there are still question marks over Louis van Gaal’s side, not least around his injury-beset backline. We’re about to find out whether his side are ready to once again hold their own against the cream of the Premier League, as over the next six Gameweeks, the Red Devils square up to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City. With so many injuries compounding poor defensive form, the United defence wasn’t high on any watchlists anyway, but the midfield and attack seemed at least to be clicking. The jewel in the Fantasy crown is the gifted Angel Di Maria, whose third double-figure haul in four weeks has managers clamouring for his services but such testing fixtures cast doubt over his ability to maintain that form. The suspension of Wayne Rooney brought Juan Mata briefly back into contention, but with one of the next two fixtures against Chelsea, the little Spaniard doesn’t look like a good short-term punt, with his skipper returning in Gameweek 10. Radamel Falcao finally got off the mark but spending 11.0 of your FPL budget on a player with these fixtures seems brave.

Swansea
After a cracking start to the season, Garry Monk’s side have begun to toil and are winless since Gameweek 3. The Swans still have two decent fixtures left of their kind run, but after that the skies turn dark for a time as trips to Everton and Man City bookend a home clash with Arsenal. Reasonable fixtures follow those matches, though, and anyone holding Neil Taylor may wish to rotate him to the bench for those weeks, while Gylfi Sigurdsson’s third double-figure haul of the season served a timely reminder of his value and few will be willing to part company in spite of a testing schedule. Wilfried Bony, on the other hand, hasn’t yet moved into top gear and the time doesn’t look right to jump on board.

On the last thread the subject of voting came up and which post had garnered the most votes.

I think it may be this one that was mentioned - The great 'but Rome is in Italy' post of last season.

What would you do with 2 free transfers? 0.0 in the bank.

    Guzan, Foster

    Falcao, Costa, Naismith

    My team:

    Begovic, Gilks
van Aanholt, Caulker, Chester, Clyne, Wisdom
Sigurdsson, Di Maria, Fabregas, Sterling, Davis
    Costa, Ulloa, Pelle

    1 FT, 5.4 ITB

    Would you WC this ?
Or Caulker + Chester out for -4 ?

Hey guys, I'm saving my free trade this gw.

Next gw, I'm planning to trade sterling to either henderson or downing so that I can upgrade van aanholt to Baines (I have mannone in goals).

Firstly, does the move sound good or should I just stay with sterling and van aanholt. Sunderland's upcoming fixtures aren't the best, so having jst mannone sounds fine.

Secondly, if i do make the trade, should i get downing or henderson??

    Thanks guys in advance 🙂

Fair enough, I'd keep Sterling and get Chambers though, great fixtures and Arsenal don't tend to struggle in the easier games.

Thoughts on what to do with this?
Either thinking of Chester> Baines/ivanovic or Agureo in (mean a hit)?
Have 1FT and 3.8ITB and wildcard
    DDG
    Chester Lovren Bertrand (Dumnett wisdom)
    ADM Sterling Siggy Fab (Wanyama)
    Costa Welbeck Pelle

Have Costa and Pelle but I'm a hard time choosing my third striker. Looking to trade in my Vardy for Welbeck or Aguero. Aguero is the proven scorer but Welbeck has been showing good (better?) form with a better run of fixtures ahead.

Oh, and spending the 12+ on Aguero will NOT screw up my team.

    Cheers!

Yeah I mean I got him straight in as I was on WC back then and simply made the value play. I was hoping he would have done more than this even though they have had a tough run since I brought him in. At the very least I've gained some TV in him, something I have been struggling with this season. Anyway, it is put up or shut up time and I am hoping he can score some goals in the Prem and not just in UCL and for his country.

          1. They just finished facing Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City. They beat Liverpool. Despite the scorelines they gave all a very stiff resistance for the majority of the game. (Arsenal scored all 3 in like 4 mins and City didn't score in the first 80).

          2. Their fixtures are easier from here on.

          3. Hutton is dead cheap.

NO on that Arsenal pair. Honestly you can easily just keep Ulloa for his game at Newc for a farewell game and then do that double switch for free next week and miss Chadli's bad fixture. Only thing worth taking the hit is if you really want to captain Kun against Spurs, but if that will isn't terribly strong I think you could do to wait.

Chadli for NEWC/villa/STOKE/hull/EVE. Anything in the City game is a bonus. He is right up there when it comes to midf with goal threat.

100% of his shots in side box.

I'm kind of stumped with what to do for the next GW. Annoyingly I got Chambers in as part of a 3 transfer (4 point hit) change and haven't used him in 2 weeks and now he's suspended. Pretty stupid.

Anyway this is my team - 0.1m in the bank and 2 free transfers:

    Forster
    PvA Bertrand Moore
    Sterling Di Maria Sigurdsson Hazard
    Costa Welbeck Aguero

    Elliot Chambers N.Taylor Marney

I'm pretty sure Hazard's injury is a classic international injury.

I had thought about doing Hazard+PvA to Tadic+Baines but of course Hazard decided to score against Arsenal and now I'm not sure I can get rid of him vs Palace.

I suppose I should look at defence but with little money and a lot of 4.5m players who should I be looking at?

    Maybe PvA to Duff?

You mentioned Mane's fluff earlier, Chadli's post job last game was also pretty horrendous. He should have slotted that home with ease he was one on one with the keeper and had a couple of different options of where to put the ball in the back of the net.

difference was mane had nothing to do, chadli still burst past and through fonte from a good 40 yards out. he should have scored of course, mane's was miss of the season stuff though.
of the misses last gw i'd rank them 1) mane 2) aguero 3) chadli

I wasn't saying Chadli's was worse, just saying that he lacked finishing quality in his own right last game. The Mane miss was just a disaster, nothing compares to that.

think that's about right. he doesn't seem a very natural finisher (the arsenal fluff before his goal another example), which is why this current run is quite surprising. think he's actually underperforming assist wise so far if overperforming goal wise. he used to waste so many goal prompting passes further down the pitch as assists for the assister but now seems advanced enough to make more count

Yeah, the positioning for Chadli is so advanced. But Eriksen has the set piece bonus in his favor as well as a larger body of work. Tough call, really, can make strong arguments for either.

Eriksen was the most advanced last week. The midfield three of Lamela Chadli and Eriksen all appear higher than Ade at varying points in the season...it isn't just Chadli...(avg position)...

Im torn between Tadic and Chadli, Tadic with pens and fixtures is swaying it, dont have Pelle like you if i did it would be Chadli.

        Choose between:

        Mane
        Eriksen
        Sigurdsson
        Chadli
        Schurrle
        Lamela
        Henderson

Ivan / Baines - mid potential with clean sheets in tow...

Eriksen looks a good punt. Chadli to be safe.

Although I don't see why Cesc needs a replacement at all. I haven't owned him the whole season and I can tell you it's not fun watching the Chelsea games from behind the sofa...

      RMT Please 🙂

      Mannone (Given)
      Jagielka-Clyne-Naylor (Wisdom-Hutton)
      ADM-Fab-Siggy-Sterling (Cork)
      Costa-Aguero-Pelle

Did Ivanovic + Ulloa -> Aguero + Jagielka
      Any more changes for GW8?

there was a post pre-season about fabregas in the first half of the season compared the the second half of the season with some interesting stats. anyone have it bookmarked by any chance, or at least remember who wrote it?

Yea I remember that, how is form dramatically decreases in the 2nd half of the season.
7shades may have wrote it but not 100%?

Well that doesnt mean much if its based on his time at Arsenal. Arsenal historically fail in the second half of the season as an entire unit.

Aguero compromises the rest of the team. Not owing him lets me have Baines & Sanchez!

just to defend myself a bit it's different having him and not having. when you don't have him things like being on 3 yellows and this hamstring business (not that i've bought into it) do play more of a part as doubts. if you already have it's easier to just ignore and hope for the best.
do plan on having him in gw10
