Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 11 – The Weak

Having run the rule over the sides set to ease their way into December, it’s now time to check on the teams granted a more treacherous path. Monday night’s participants provide the headline acts, while a cloud is hovering ominously over the Potteries. Elsewhere, we offer early warnings on some prime Fantasy assets on show at St Mary’s and the Emirates.

Sunderland

“frisking

Sunderland’s victory at Crystal Palace was all the more crucial given the schedule awaiting both clubs going into December.

Gus Poyet’s side will be desperate to build on the precious three points earned at Selhurst Park but find themselves on a collision course with Everton, Chelsea and Man City in their next three home matches. It’s fair to say that new stopper, Costel Pantilimon, will be kept busy during that period, while Steven Fletcher’s revival will be put to the test given that opportunities could be at a premium in the coming weeks. Poyet has earned results against the “bigger” teams before of course but, even so, the away trip to Leicester in Gameweek 12 looks vital if the Black Cats are to avoid being dragged back down into the relegation places by Christmas.

Crystal Palace

“frisking

Neil Warnock will have known the significance of Monday’s loss, with the fixture computer conspiring against his side over the next five Gameweeks.

A trip to Old Trafford without their suspended skipper Mile Jedinak and attacking spark, Wilfried Zaha, is followed by a home clash with Liverpool and a visit to Swansea. The Eagles then have a crunch clash with Villa at home, before taking on Spurs at the Lane.

Fantasy managers will have been warned off their inconsistent assets following Monday’s defeat and the schedule offers very little incentive to revisit Warnock’s charges until that Villa meeting.

Stoke

“frisking

Pegged back by West Ham on Saturday, Mark Hughes’s men face a torrid run over their next five, with the Britannia meeting with Burnley in Gameweek 12 looking crucial to their chances of retaining a mid-table position. Around that Potteries clash, Stoke face three evil away trips to Spurs, Liverpool and Man United and then a home encounter with Arsenal.

Hughes’ rearguard has shipped seven goals in their last four: if you’ve held your Stoke defensive assets through that period, now is the time to show them the door.

Also be wary of…

Southampton
Ronald Koeman’s outfit currently look unstoppable – capable of scoring goals across the team and reinforced by the best defence in the Premier League. That winning formula will be put to the test, however, once they’ve disposed of the St Mary’s meeting with Leicester and a “routine” trip to the woefully out-of-form Villa. City, Arsenal and United are hovering and they offer enough attacking menace to have us check for alternatives to our Saints defensive assets from Gameweek 13 onwards.

West Brom
While the Baggies face a pair of Hawthorns clashes with Newcastle and West Ham in the next four, encounters with Arsenal and Chelsea are sandwiched in the middle. When you consider Newcastle’s resurgence and West Ham’s goal power, you’d have to say that those holding Ben Foster or Andre Wisdom will be anticipating scant returns from that quartet. Meanwhile, Saido Berahino owners will likely be holding with one eye on West Ham’s Diafra Sakho as a cheaper replacement with stronger fixtures to come.

Arsenal
While the Gunners are being fired by the genius of Alexis Sanchez, Arsene Wenger’s flat-track bullies do not have the easiest of runs in the coming weeks. They may well get results against Swansea, United, West Brom and Southampton but – on paper – they’re up against three of the most improved defences over that spell. Bizarrely, given United’s casualties at the back, the Emirates meeting with Louis van Gaal’s men may actually provide the best platform for goals.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Long Post Warning.
    Fantasy Report: The Derby
ManC v ManU @ The Etihad
    Result: 1-0 – (Aguero)

I went along to the derby and though some here may be interested in a match report of the game from a fantasy perspective. Although City got the 3 points, United looked the sharper of the teams and would have taken some confidence from the result. City are not in great form (first win in 4 in all competitions).

    ManU Defence

Surprising resilient under plenty of attack. Smalling was sent off for two idiotic brain fades and Rojo left with a dislocated shoulder. This left United with a back four comprising two midfielders (Valencia and Carrick) and two 19 year olds (Shaw and McNair). They couldn’t keep out Aguero and DDG made a coupld of decent saves but although a brave performance it looks likely that attack will continue to be the best for of defence

    Suggestion: Sell

    ManU Attack

Fellaini looks very important for United right now. His physical presence in both box’s and through the middle of the park will mean he retains his spot until the medical room empties a little. Januzaj although clever, had little impact before coming off for carrick following smalling seeing red. Both are cheap but I would stay away.
ADM and Rooney were the best two players on the pitch for United and even with 10 men seemed dangerous enough to steal a point from the Etihad. ADM would often have long high balls played to him and allow Clichy to win them so he could then get in behind the defence. A tactic im not sure Van Gaal would appreciate yet as a fantasy manager, i was salivating. Only due to Clichy having an excellent game was ADM kept out of the points.
Rooney looked sharp, dangerous and as always, full of energy. He made a couple of nice runs that finished with key passes or blocked shots. RvP did very little and is horribly out of form, that said, he was very close to scoring on two occasions.

Suggestion: ADM or nothing. Rooney monitor for now.

    ManC Defence

Hart made a couple of excellent saves to prevent city from having what could have been an embarrassing loss after playing much of the game against 10 and a makeshift defense. Kompany is a boss and as vital as always while Demichelis has great moments and heart in the mouth moments. Kolorov was his usual self with his high workrate to both ends. Clichy was clearly man of the match and deserved his 3 BPS. Kolorov was on the team sheet but was injured in the warm up and is now out for around a month. Clichy suppressed the threat of ADM and looked to expose his habit of not tracking back. City seemed to have most of their meaningful attacks (including the goal) from the left.

Suggest: Hold. Even against 10 they could easily have conceded. Clichy is nailed for a while and a decent option but for their price it is likely there are better options elsewhere.

    ManC Attack

Interesting game in this area. With Silva injured and Nasri only fit enough for the bench City seems to lack a creative force in the final third. Toure was as always, either walking aimlessly or bubbling with threat (including an excellent pass to assist the assister for the goal). Milner seems vital, his workrate to shut down united was sorely missed when he went off and United controlled the game from that point onwards. I expect him to start while Silva is out.
Aguero is Aguero and was very unhappy as being taken off late in the game. This bodes well for his fatigue levels. Navas is lighting fast on the counter and will get the odd goal and assist but struggle to be a reliable fantasy asset. Dzeko looks horribly out of form and Jovetic looks a little lost dropping deeper to attract the ball.

Suggest: Buy Aguero and a punt on Milner is not a terrible idea

PS Im not a writer so go easy on me.

                Lloris, Gilks

                Clyne, Dawson, Naylor, Tomkins, Duff

                Sanchez, ADM, Siggy, Chadli, Boyd

                Costa, Aguero, Berahino

Only other options seem to be Tomkins (if he's lost his place) or Chadli

Lloris was a feck up, but I'm not wasting another transfer on a keeper, I'll just wait until wc.

I disagree that Arsenal's fixtures are tough

swa, MNU, wba, SOT, sto, NEW, liv, QPR

I see one good defensive side there and it's Southampton. Maybe not great for Arsenal defenders - but nobody has anyone other than Chambers anyway and he'll still be good value.

I'm so enjoying the FPL game this year. It seems more predictable in terms of form AND fixtures, and so mistakes are easier to recover from and make up lost ground.

Last year, I recall having a very set attacking bunch with Suarez, Hazard, Ramsey, RVP/Rooney ding-dong, and these players delivered regardless of fixture which meant you were punished if you strayed with your picks or armband. This season has seen one midfield template including Sterling and Siggy possibly already dismantled. On the other hand, I remember sticking with Baines through thick and thin and missing out on assists and pen chances.

Perhaps, there is a wider pool of players that are performing? Including genuine budget options. Anyone else feel the same?

Selecting transfer targets from the Opta tables are really paying off. I was very late signing up for a membership this year as I've spent so much time in the past pouring over all the stats; touches in the penalty area, shots from inside the box, chances conceded in the centre, that I wanted to play the game more casually this time around. That went out of the window when I *needed* to compare Sterling, Fabregas, Siggy and Sanchez last week 😀

Wider pool of players performing is making it difficult to form a template team. And no Yaya-esque players this year!

I'm enjoying it much more yes.

Last year your season was almost dependent on how early you got on Yaya and Ramsey.

I think they've improved price changes massively this season too. You don't get tied into players value because they rise 1.5-2.0m

Agree completely. Price changes have meant you don't feel forced to jump onboard the latest bandwagon. Similarly, you can jump off when fixtures dictate even before that player's form dips.

So were comparing everyone in form to a guy who's played only twice in the last 4 and 1 of those games coming off a 3 week injury layoff?

Hardly a fair comparison. Let's revisit after at least a 3 game in a row block for Costa. I'll agree then if the stats remain the same after the next 2.

      torrid
      [tawr-id, tor-]
      adjective

      1. subject to parching or burning heat, especially of the sun, as a geographical area:

I've decided I'm going to take a - 4 to get Baines in this GW. I have to downgrade to upgrade Moreno though.

    I have two options.....

    Option 1)

    Moreno > Baines
    Tadic > Downing

    - 4 (I have no West Ham players currently)

    or

    Option 2)

    Moreno > Baines
    Welbeck > Kane

    - 4 (I currently have Sanchez)

no I'm not certain, but I for my part only take hits if I'm sure that both players are an upgrade to my current ones. A is certainly the better one, but for this option to succeed you need a lot of luck.

    Current team:

    Krul

    Duff Wisdom Clyne

    Tadic Siggy Di Maria Sanchez

    Costa Pelle Aguero

    subs. Mannone Hutton Moore Marney
