Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope doubled in size after an incident-packed Gameweek 11 brought a host of players closer to an automatic one-match ban. Whilst last week’s seven incumbents managed to steer clear of the referee’s wrath and remain on four yellows, they were joined by a further seven players, with Diego Costa the most notable new entry, after the Chelsea striker kept up his remarkable record of being booked in every away appearance in the league so far.

Having missed back-to-back road trips to Palace and Man United over Gameweeks 8-9, Costa’s caution during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool added to cards accrued at Burnley, Everton and Man City, and given his ability to rack up the yellows on his travels, a ban looks imminent.

Joining Costa on four bookings after their weekend indiscretions are Andreas Weimann, Liam Moore, Richard Dunne, Morgan Schneiderlin and Swansea defensive duo Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams, compounding Garry Monk’s worries at the back, with the likes of Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez both missing the 2-1 win over Arsenal through injury.

Costa’s caution means that the two most popular players in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game are in danger of toppling off the Tightrope. The 56%-owned Chelsea striker joins team-mate Cesc Fabregas (sitting in 53% of teams), whilst Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is another asset with big ownership sailing close to the wind.

In terms of newly banned players, Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton is set to face a two-match suspension after earning his second dismissal of the season last weekend. The right-back was sent packing during Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Stoke after bringing down Victor Moses as the last man, with the Potters winger bearing down on goal. Naughton misses a trip to Hull and home clash with Everton and returns just in time for a Gameweek 14 trip to Chelsea, but with Kyle Walker set to return to first-team training next week, Naughton’s pitch time now looks at major risk.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s decision to appeal Naughton’s ban was rejected by the FA yesterday, after an independent regulatory commission ruled he was guilty of denying Moses a goalscoring opportunity.

Naughton is one of three players suspended for Gameweek 12 duties. QPR defender Rio Ferdinand serves the last of a three-match ban away to Newcastle for his recent Twitter comments, whilst Villa’s Christian Benteke skips the second of a three-match suspension for violent conduct and misses upcoming clashes with Southampton and Burnley.

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers continued his recent ill-disciplined form, and earned a sixth yellow card in just eight Premier League starts for the north London outfit, earning his owners zero points in Sunday’s away loss to Swansea.

Finally, as many as five players return from one-match suspensions in time for Gameweek 12. Both Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and West Brom’s Craig Gardner toppled off the tightrope in Gameweek 10 and, having sat out the previous round of fixtures, are back in contention for matches against Leicester and Chelsea respectively.

Chris Smalling is available for United’s trip to Arsenal, Palace midfielder and spot-kick taker Mile Jedinak is in the frame as Neil Warnock’s side host Liverpool, whilst Jonjo Shelvey returns for Swansea’s testing trip to the Etihad.

    I like this one...

I would not be bothered if we lost every game as long as we won the league... 😀

Brilliant . I love those whole "If you don't score, you won't win" kind of quotes. I remember one commentator in a 3-2 match that is none of the goals were scored it would've been a boring 0-0 draw. No shit Sherlock lol

You do not think that Arsenal's and Liverpool's positions would have changed had Suarez played for Arsenal instead of Liverpool? Or that Barcelona is still in trade relations with Arsenal?

A quick analysis to prove what some of you may have been thinking, but thought I'd post it nevertheless.

I have analysed the total number of goals scored and conceded by SOT's first 11 games, and next 11 games, to see how they may be affected.

    GOALS:

First 11 games, the teams which Southampton have played have conceded 173 goals
Next 11 games, the teams which Southampton play have conceded 165 goals

VERDICT: Keep your attackers, expect returns to continue at a steady rate.

    DEFENCE:

First 11 games, the teams which Southampton have played have scored 147 goals
Next 11 games, the teams which Southampton play have scored 180 goals

VERDICT: Double up, sell one. Probably worth keeping one though, as their defensive record is incredible - only 5 goals conceded so far this season...6 less than Chelsea and Swansea (11) who are their nearest 'defensive' rivals.

Hope this helps some of you.

No problem. I was surprised at how close the First 11 conceded/Second 11 conceded were...

Remember they scored 8 against Sunderland too.

If, and it's a big If, they manage to step up/maintain their performance against the next 11 teams, I could really see a huge shock occurring this season.

But we will wait and see.

Imagine if they won the league...

I think they could surprise us all...will be an interesting few weeks 🙂
I currently have Pelle, Bertrand and Forster, keeping all 3 this week then doing Bertrand + Myhill -> Naylor + Fabianski for Swansea's good run and to provide cover for Forster!

I might get Fabianski in for Elliot

            But it's a 1.1m expense which I don't like to spend...

More likely to drop the SOT for the SWA - as mentioned, SWA have had a good defensive record.

Not sure if there is anything to substantiate your claim.

There's no evidence of a slip up.
        No frailties have been identified.
Chelsea have taken the limelight off them by producing an unbeaten run.

I'm gonna keep 2 of me 3 I think. Probably lose Tadic for Downing - the two seem well matched but can get 1.8 back. Clyne and Pelle can stay - their are good other options if I need to ditch either later.

So long as they keep their regular back 4 and the defensive mids healthy cannot see any reason why they can't carry on producing defensive returns. A few injuries will however test out their CL/Europe credentials...

    A)
    Pelle > Costa

I've had the debate a couple of times over the years but an update on an old chestnut.

I first mooted the idea that you could pick you mids based on one stat alone last year..that stat being "touches in the box"..I even went as far as to say you could pick your entire midfield based on that one stat alone.(emphasis on "could"...I understand that there are other reasons and other stats)

So...eleven weeks in...The top five "touches in the box" mids for the season to date...21 goals and 13 assists...It really is all you need if you choose to keep life simple.

I use a metric to help choose my transfer targets. One of the major factors is pen box touches. I do think that if you were to pick only 1 stat, Shots in the box might be a better choice.

        • 11 Years

They are of course related, but touches in the box might for example miss a player like Downing who ranks joint 5th for SIB, but something like 18th for touches.

Ideally you'd prefer a player with both ranking highly. Thats why i use both (and others) in my calcs - they are 2 of the most important ones.

          1. Dr Dream
            • 11 Years

I find it quite intriguing. How do we predict pts...sheesh...

Without giving too much away, i factor in minutes played and also upward trends in key factors like touches in the pen box and SIB. This of course only deals with goal scoring players - but that is where most of the good points come from 🙂

This calc highlighted Sakho very strongly which along with watching him play saw me bring him in back in gwk 6.

Which front 7 would you rather have...

    Siggy, Sanchez, Hazard, Chadli
    Aguero, Pelle, Welbeck

    or

    Siggy, Chadli, Tadic, Hazard
    Aguero Pelle Costa

    Thanks

B for Costa but why so set on Hazard? He just seems to play outstanding but the points return v value never add up.

      My dilemna is similar!

      Downing, Sanchez, Fabregas, ADM
      Aguero, Pelle, Berahino

      or

      Downing, Sanchez, Siggy, Chadli
      Aguero Pelle Costa

Getting rid of Tadic and Pelle soon, to Chelsea players.

    A) Tadic to Hazard
    B) Pelle to Costa
    C) Save transfer for next week

    Really can't decide.

Worried about missing Chelsea's home fixture vs WBA, but Saints have avl, which could easily be just as juicy.

      2-1 to Scotland...

I'm under no illusion that the Irish are a great team, but we are finally playing some great football, we are more assured on the ball in the final third, and we are making less mistakes than usual under Strachan...

This is our biggest game since that refereeing farce v Italy...

      'Mon the Scotland!

I've watched a few of their games and I would be fairly worried. The Germans got unbelievably lucky at home.

Was it last year the Croats were so smug they would turn over Scotland in a qualifier? I just remember thinking those silly twats!! Everyone assumed they would win and they lost 1-0

Chadli..... reminds me of the Ramsey situation last year. If you don't have him you think ''won't keep this up, as soon as i put him in he''ll stop getting points'' .... But he keeps popping up. Last year i jumped on Ramsey early and reaped rewards. This year I've held out.

Is the hype real or is he getting lucky?

I'm a non-owner for a reason. One shot on target every other game. I was considering buying four weeks ago but decided to wait. Since then he has shown how little he contributes.

I'm an owner and he has some handy stats. Despite that I would suggest he is still over performing somewhat. Also with Spurs being so terrible he is fortunate to be capatising on the few chances he gets. One might suggest it's not sustainable. However the same could have been said about Ramsey last season

I think his price tag justifies his pt returns single handedly and raises funds for investment in other areas.
