Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 11

The Suspension Tightrope doubled in size after an incident-packed Gameweek 11 brought a host of players closer to an automatic one-match ban. Whilst last week’s seven incumbents managed to steer clear of the referee’s wrath and remain on four yellows, they were joined by a further seven players, with Diego Costa the most notable new entry, after the Chelsea striker kept up his remarkable record of being booked in every away appearance in the league so far.

Having missed back-to-back road trips to Palace and Man United over Gameweeks 8-9, Costa’s caution during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Liverpool added to cards accrued at Burnley, Everton and Man City, and given his ability to rack up the yellows on his travels, a ban looks imminent.

Joining Costa on four bookings after their weekend indiscretions are Andreas Weimann, Liam Moore, Richard Dunne, Morgan Schneiderlin and Swansea defensive duo Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams, compounding Garry Monk’s worries at the back, with the likes of Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez both missing the 2-1 win over Arsenal through injury.

Costa’s caution means that the two most popular players in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game are in danger of toppling off the Tightrope. The 56%-owned Chelsea striker joins team-mate Cesc Fabregas (sitting in 53% of teams), whilst Southampton’s top scorer Graziano Pelle is another asset with big ownership sailing close to the wind.

In terms of newly banned players, Tottenham’s Kyle Naughton is set to face a two-match suspension after earning his second dismissal of the season last weekend. The right-back was sent packing during Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Stoke after bringing down Victor Moses as the last man, with the Potters winger bearing down on goal. Naughton misses a trip to Hull and home clash with Everton and returns just in time for a Gameweek 14 trip to Chelsea, but with Kyle Walker set to return to first-team training next week, Naughton’s pitch time now looks at major risk.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham’s decision to appeal Naughton’s ban was rejected by the FA yesterday, after an independent regulatory commission ruled he was guilty of denying Moses a goalscoring opportunity.

Naughton is one of three players suspended for Gameweek 12 duties. QPR defender Rio Ferdinand serves the last of a three-match ban away to Newcastle for his recent Twitter comments, whilst Villa’s Christian Benteke skips the second of a three-match suspension for violent conduct and misses upcoming clashes with Southampton and Burnley.

Arsenal’s Calum Chambers continued his recent ill-disciplined form, and earned a sixth yellow card in just eight Premier League starts for the north London outfit, earning his owners zero points in Sunday’s away loss to Swansea.

Finally, as many as five players return from one-match suspensions in time for Gameweek 12. Both Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and West Brom’s Craig Gardner toppled off the tightrope in Gameweek 10 and, having sat out the previous round of fixtures, are back in contention for matches against Leicester and Chelsea respectively.

Chris Smalling is available for United’s trip to Arsenal, Palace midfielder and spot-kick taker Mile Jedinak is in the frame as Neil Warnock’s side host Liverpool, whilst Jonjo Shelvey returns for Swansea’s testing trip to the Etihad.

Could I suggest that Chelsea's inability to keep a clean sheet in the last few, when we expected at least two, were due to Azpi's 3 week ban? Sent of at 39 minutes against Palace, conceded late in that game.

He was back against Liverpool last weekend, but the one goal they conceded was a brutal deflection off Cahill, sending Courtois the wrong way......

Fair enough. I am thinking of looking at Azpi as a Clyne replacement. They will sort out the defence sooner or later you would think

they didn't. Although they did have a tricky run of fixtures.

Fancy Jose to tighten up at the back now, and not let this lead slip away.

not worth the risk in fantasy terms. Might start a couple on the trot (due to squad injuries), but might find himself benched soon thereafter. Also, hasn't quite done well enough to continue starting, anyway.

I can't help it...there must be some obvious solution to having Costa - Aguero - Sturridge as a front three without ripping up my entire team and taking a 16 point hit, if I stare at the screen for long enough it will appear to me eventually

or is it crazy enough to work? 🙂

            Team would be;

            Krul - Foster

Clyne - Baines - Chambers (Cameron - Moore)

Hazard - Chadli - Sigurdsson - Zaha (Boyd - Rotation with Zaha)

            Costa - Aguero - Sturridge

            What do you think?

              How many hits is that?

Overall it looks decent. Can't knock Chadli's form in front of goal, though I doubt it will continue (or could he be this year's Ramsey I wonder). And I can't see you getting many returns from Zaha and Boyd.

But Sturridge normally hits the ground running when back from injury, no doubt Pool will be better with him and their fixtures are nice.

Wouldn't do it myself though. Would get Sterling instead.

                Just one (-4)

I can't see Chadli keeping it up either, and Zaha/Boyd will be 2/3 points most weeks, with the odd 5/6 every now and then.

But I'm thinking is that two of the the front three could be be hitting double figures each week - and overall that's got to be an above average score?

I looked at Sterling as an alternative, this would give me 7.5M for a midfielder, as opposed to the 5.3M I have for Zaha, but I don't see any stand out options at 7.5M

              Fab, Sanchez, Siggy, Chadli

pretty potent but lacks at the back

Hazard - Chadli - Sigurdsson - Zaha (Boyd)

                Costa - Aguero - Sturridge

I don't think it looks too bad, only thing is most people/teams on here have at least two, usually three big hitters in Midfield (ADM, Sanchez, Walcott Fab/Haz etc) but I'm thinking surely a strong front three outscore a strong midfield three?

Its a decent team..but not sure whether u are maximising ur points as there are quite a few decent cheap striker options beside sturridge that can provide u decent points. Also that u are not captaining sturridge. Missing out on the likes of adm and sanchez might miss u some points.

There might be a better way to utilise ur resource imo

I just think that over the course of the season the proven point scorers like Sturridge will have more than double the one week wonders such as Austin this week, Sakho last week, and Naismith - Ulloa before them.

Whilst comments are slow I don't mind asking for a few more opinions. Got some good advice yesterday, so would be interested to see what a different audience reckons:

    I have 2FTs

    A) Tadic > Sterling

    B) Tadic + Naylor > Baines + 5.8m

    C) Pelle + Naylor > Baines + 6m

    D) Pelle + Naylor + Tadic > Baines + Chadli + Sakho/Austin (-4)

My defence is Berty, Chambers, Naylor, Moore, Duff

See Naylor as the only real way at the moment.
I don't expect So'ton to just over even against the big guns

But I agree with Green Windmill, I would get rid of Bertrand. All data points to Saints not keeping that many cleansheets for a while.

Went to the Argentina game last night and couldn't help but wince every time Aguero was near the ball 😆 Think I cheered him being subbed off more than anything else.

Di Maria looked poor to be honest, maybe he was just playing at 50% due to it being a friendly.

Messi was brilliant once he got into the game.

Di Maria is a worry both as an owner and Utd fan. People got a bit carried away with his early form( some going as far as branding him the best player in PL). Some of the things he does seem very instinctive rather than well thought, not sure how much of that is replicable week in week out.

Pelle ➡ Costa for free. Considering Pelle has decent fixture do you think it's a waste of FT or worth it? I've Tadic too. May be he'll cover possible Pelle's goal with an assist?

Worth it. Not because you have Tadic, that's irrelevant, but because Costa has the better fixture, is the better player, in a better team, with much better fixtures after this week as well.

Pelle -> Costa is never a bad transfer but don't lay your hopes on Tadic covering Pelle's points if gets any vs Villa, doesn't work that way. Though getting rid of Tadic first makes more sense. I've got rid of both for a hit.

Im actually thinking of doing B next gameweek after Pelle good fixture and as his fixtures turn, as also Siggys fix get better.

That's fair enough, makes sense fixture wise to do B next week - nice home game for Austin/Sakho as well as Siggy, all of whom have a tougher away match than Pelle this GW.

As for Di Maria vs Hazard, I really couldn't call it, I want both... I'd probably lean towards Hazard, but I'm not sure if he's worth forcing a hit next week. Could well be, but its really hard to predict.

Costa yellow card is a red herring, I think.

His record shows that when he plays he’s got a YC every other game. So if this pattern continues, he’ll play the next 2, inc the hard-to-captain GW 13.

And if he gets through the next 2 the prospect of serving the ban in the League Cup looms close.

“Ah, but his hot Latin blood!” you cry. “He’ll never survive all those games without a yellow!”

Well old Bitey disproved this stereotype last season. Probably when Rogers realised, with some foresight, that Liverpool would be useless without him. I don’t think it’s beyond Maureen to talk similar sense into Costa.

So the chances are if you don’t buy him now, you’ll miss out on at least two Costa weeks, and possibly more. And we all know that it’s the early weeks of bandwagon that are the big diff. There may be good reasons not to buy Costa but I’m not convinced a potential 5th yellow is a good enough one.

Your premise that he won't get a yellow card this week because of a pattern is also a red herring.

I agree that you can't say that pattern will continue in the future. And there will be other factors. But you have to Base future predictions on past performance to some extent.

Wait, you'd kick yourself if a player you brought in got injured before the next GW

Going to wait.....4 vs 1 - thanks my online football brethren.

I'll live in hope that his transfers get injured and then he has to make more...that's my dream for the next 10 days...what an excited life I lead.

            72 points but with his -8...only 64.

I have a t.v which is 3.4m greater than his 101.8 vs my 105.2 which is huge at this stage...that affords me Baines, Aguero, Costa, Sanchez & Hazard....i just need to be patient...BUT IT'S SO HAAAAAAARD

Yeah, I had that last year, had a terrible first 5-6 weeks and was forever playing catch up. Any differential that worked for me he'd get in the following week. At least you still have plenty of time to close the gap, and that team value will start helping you a great deal. This year I'm over 100 points ahead of him so far. Feels good.

How much longer does anyone expect it to be until Walcott is worth owning? I'm sitting on 2.5M so that I can bring him in for Chadli, but can't decide if it's worth doing a temporary upgrade of a defender until he starts firing. Any thoughts?

I guess the band wagon will start as soon as he (a) starts or (b) scores. May not be long.

Who is your defence? I think avoiding temporary upgrades to defenders is generally a good idea, it's the area where you should look to use the least transfers.

        Baines, Bertrand and Wisdom/Duff/Hutton.

The rest of my team is:

        Forster (4.0)
        Sanchez DiMaria Downing Chadli (Boyd)
        Aguero Costa Austin
