Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Sturridge and Balotelli Boost for Liverpool

Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli could both be in line for a weekend return for Liverpool. Steven Taylor is expected to be in contention for Newcastle, Aaron Ramsey concedes he’s not yet returned to full match sharpness, Billy Jones nears his Sunderland comeback, whilst Harry Kane’s form continues with a brace for England Under 21s.

Strikers On Verge of Reds Return

Reports surfacing yesterday suggest that Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is expected to be fit for his side’s clash with Crystal Palace this weekend, despite being sent home from international training with Italy with a groin concern. Daniel Sturridge, meanwhile, has dropped a major hint on Instagram that he, too, will be fit for the trip to Selhurst Park.

The Scout Says: Could we finally be set to see the two Liverpool forwards paired together for only the second time this season? The last time it happened, against Spurs in Gameweek 3, saw Brendan Rodgers’ side deliver unquestionably their best performance of the season as they ran out with a comfortable 3-0 victory. Raheem Sterling found himself on the scoresheet that day, and having notched just once since, his performances having taking a significant downturn since Sturridge was sidelined and Rodgers moved to a lone striker system. With his international team-mate now back in contention, however, we could see the young midfielder return to his dangerous best, and he couldn’t ask for a better place to start than against Palace this weekend, whose dire defensive performances have seen them concede two or more goals in four of their last five showings. With more decent fixtures to follow for Liverpool (STO, lei, SUN) both Sterling, at 8.5, and Sturridge, at 11.1, are poised to scale our Watchlists in the coming weeks.

MAGPIES HOPEFUL OF TAYLOR RECOVERY

Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is expected to recover from a knee problem in time to face QPR this weekend – contrary to reports that he had suffered a further injury setback during the international break.

The Scout Says: It’s been a merry-go-round couple of days for Taylor’s recent influx of owners, with earlier reports indicating that he could be out for up to four weeks having now been quashed. The 3.9-valued centre-back has picked up in popularity after securing a starting spot in a backline that has accumulated three clean sheets in their last four Gameweeks, though with skipper Fabricio Coloccini a doubt for the Gameweek 12 meeting with QPR, the Magpies’ defensive credentials could be put to the test this weekend: the Argentine has started every league match this season, and earned bonus points each time they have managed a shutout. Taylor’s return is likely to move Mike Williamson further down the pecking order – after recovering from injury last time around, the latter was handed a spot on the bench as Pardew opted for Paul Dummett alongside Coloccini at centre-half and the young Welshman could be tasked with filling in at the heart of defence until the Magpies have a full quota to choose from.

RAMSEY CONCEDES HE’S NOT FULLY FIT

Aaron Ramsey has spoken out about his recent criticism and admitted that he is yet to reach 100% this season:

“I’ve had a few injuries this season and I’m just getting back. To be honest, I’m still not 100 per cent physically there. The injuries do take a bit out of me. It will take me a few more games to be back to my best. But I’m not worried. I know my qualities. Certain criticism from people is unfair.”

The Scout Says: The Welshman was handed his first start since Gameweek 6 last time around against Swansea, as Arsene Wenger continues to ease him back into action following his injury difficulties. Having made such a positive start to the campaign, Ramsey is now without a goal since Gameweek 2, and, what’s more, the Gunners’ recent move to a 4-4-2 formation is likely to limit his ability to get forward as much: indeed, his performance at the Liberty saw him register an ICT rating of just 3.0, as opposed to an average of 14.4 across his first three displays of the season. Should Wenger stick with the same system, Theo Walcott – once fully fit – should feature on the flanks or possibly up top on occasion, and thus looks a better option than the 8.8-priced Ramsey for a similar price (9.0).

JONES EDGES CLOSER TO BLACK CAST COMEBACK

Reports confirm Billy Jones is expected to feature in training in under two weeks’ time as he nears his Sunderland return.

The Scout Says: Having finally broken into the first XI back in Gameweek 6, his subsequent injury the following week has come as a real blow for the right back, whose start to life at the Stadium of Light since his summer move from West Brom has been far from idyllic. His absence, coupled with further injuries amongst the Black Cats’ backline, has also allowed the error-prone Wes Brown increased pitch time, and the former United man is the prime candidate to make way upon Jones’ comeback, with Santiago Vergini then set to move back to the centre of defence in order to allow the former Baggies man the right-back berth. With four hugely testing fixtures (CHE, MCI, liv, WHM) proceeding this weekend’s trip to Leicester, Jones’ return will hand Gus Poyet a major boost as he attempts to continue the form which has seen his side earn four points from the last two Gameweeks.

KANE DOUBLE NOT ENOUGH FOR ENGLAND

Tottenham’s Harry Kane scored twice for England Under-21s last night as they lost 3-2 to France.

The Scout Says: Handed a first league start of the season against Stoke in Gameweek 11 after notching 10 goals in his previous 14 appearances, Kane’s form continues to impress. Last night’s brace will be a real confidence boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to Hull and, at 4.8, the youngster could offer managers a superb budget forward option if he can carry on his scoring form and hold on to his first team spot. Whilst matches against Everton and Chelsea in the next three may deter many, it’s worth noting that neither have impressed defensively so far and have mustered just three clean sheets apiece in the opening 11 Gameweeks. The following four (CPL, swa, BUR, lei) all look promising and should offer Kane a chance to oust midfielder Nacer Chadli as the best value route into Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the final third.

There are 2 minor differences, both players from the same team and playing in the same position.

yes, I realised afterwards... I guess the word "literally" is a good example of the English language deteriorating. According to the dictionary it now has 2 meanings which could easily be misinterpreted to be the other... 🙁

            indeed!

Since I have 2 frees was originally looking at Hazard and Pelle out and Costa and xxx in.

But this Baines injury would be a way of getting Costa and keeping Hazard. Would only want to lose him if out for 2 weeks or longer tho (1 month and he's gone!)

I very much want Costa this gw

Yeah, if it's a long term move it's fine, just don't take a 1 week punt on a defender for -4

And there is my point, one week punts on defenders are not a very commom move anyway, yet I see so many posters reply to a query using the "never" word without actually grasping the concept of long term planning and money managment.

If you transfer a mid/ata along with a defender, the hit isn´t quite for the defender is it?

I never understood why people class that as a hit for a defender. Clearly the hit is to get in the attacking mid and not the cheap ass defender 😆

    My team:

    Foster (Mannone)

    Baines, Bertrand, Chambers (moore, hutton)

    Haz, Downing, Chadli, Siggy

    Costa, Aguero Austin

Bit reluctant to play Foster at Chelsea, but I personally think I have more pressing issues than just putting in another keeper who may not score better than Foster.

So, this game week was thinking save FT.

Next week, Bert -> Azpi, and Pelle ->Austin.

The game week after that, I was thinking Chadli -> Sanchez.

    thoughts?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Liverpool tactics

Can Sturridge and Balotelli work as a front two. Both are notoriously selfish players in front of goal but could one of them adapt to becoming provider?

How will playing both affect the rest of Liverpool's assets. More assists for Sterling and Henderson perhaps to feed Sturridge?

Or will Balotelli be dropped with Liverpool favouring a lone front man?

Sturridge worked well with a partner last year and despite his lack of assists, Balo is also better when he has someone else up there with him. Seems like at least giving a 4-4-2 a shot is the option with the biggest upside, otherwise they've effectively thrown in the towel on Balo already.

As I mentioned at the bottom of my post below, I think we will see something like this:

            .... ........Gerrard/Lucas
            Henderson/Can Lallane/Allen
            ..........Sterling/Coutinho
            ....Balotelli----Sturridge

So its worth monitoring the Sterling situation as he may share gametime in a diamond - which is what happened in the run-in last season.

I think Balotelli will be given one more chance to play with Studge, but if he continues to misfire (which I think he will) it'll be Studge up top on his own in the near future.

    3. Your Mum's Athletic
      • 12 Years

When Balotelli has been playing up top on his own, he drops so deep that there ends up being no-one in the box, Sturridge will allow him to stay in the box as more of a poacher and I envisage Sturridge see-ing the ball more outside the 18-yard box, when they play away I can see Balotelli being dropped as they will favour a more counter-attacking setup which Lolotelli just not quick enough for this

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years

I disagree. In away games last season (January onwards in particular) Rodgers liked to use the diamond away from home to get an extra body and thus more control in midfield, with a more expansive 433 at home.

I think Liverpool's best performance all season came with them playing up top together - vs Spurs in September

I believe that Rodgers will go back to 4-3-3 eventually and might just drop Balo eventually after he continues to disappoint. Can see Sterling and Lallana on the wings with Gerrard, Hendi and Can/Marko/Allen in the midfield 3. Another possibility could be moving Sturridge to wing and playing Balo up front, but doubt that is going to work.

I think they will go 2 up top with a diamond in the middle, Sterling at the top of the diamond, making Sterling a very good option again.

Suarez and Sturridge were also both selfish players but worked fine, I don't see that as a problem.

The key aspect is that they have different tendencies:

      - Sturridge plays on the shoulder of the deepest defender, looking to score by timing a run, beating his man for pace, and finishing 1v1.

      - Balotelli is the opposite. He's not the type to get himself in the box between defenders for a toe-poke or scruffy finish. Instead, he likes to come short, and thrives on space. This is why he's always been most effective - and scored most goals - when played in a pair.

Without a striker constantly threatening to run beyond CB's, those CB's can press higher up the pitch to compress space in front of them (without worrying about leaving space behind), which is a main reason for Liverpool's attack being so limited so far. Players like Coutinho and Gerrard are experts (arguably the best two in the league) at picking out through balls, but without a striker running deep that threat is curtailed enormously.

Against Spurs Sturridge and Balotelli set eachother up for scoring chances numerous times (eg. the Sturridge cross in the 4th min that Balotelli should have scored from with a header, and the 1-2 they played before Sturridge's shot). Balotelli had 5 shots on target in that game, most of them great chances inside the box iirc.

I personally think its a partnership that will be very fruitful for both of them.

One word of caution to Sterling owners (myself as well), is that in a diamond last season Coutinho and Sterling were rotated somewhat, taking turns starting in the hole in the stretch-run. Coutinho started most of the home games in particular, and we may see a return to that rotation policy if the diamond with two up top proves to be a success again.

      1. rickardinho
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

Continuing on the last point, last season Rodgers preferred a diamond away from home, with Sterling in the hole, and a 433 at home with Sterling out wide and Coutinho playing the No.8 role.

Nice analysis. Didn't Sterling even play a game up top? This would be an option surely if one of Balo and Studge weren't available

          • 9 Years

No, I don't recall him playing up top. He's played as an advanced winger though, cutting in from the blindside on the opposite side of the pitch to catch CBs out. See his goal vs saints this season, or the 'goal' at the Etihad that was wrongly ruled out for offside farcically enough. On both occasions some might say he's playing as a striker but it's really just that he's so quick and has instructions to tear opponents apart with that pace as much as he can.

Suarez is not selfish at all. Without him raheem sterling wouldn't have learned half as quickly as he did.

How many times last season did Suarez tell his younger teammates where/when to run and then 20 seconds later set them up for a goal. It was more than a few, Suarez is great team player.

Indeed. +1 to Greenwindmill. It is useless to dream Studge and Balo would ever work together like Studge and Suarez did. Suarez and Sturridge worked together most basically because both are excellent players. Balo is not, and that's the fundamental reason why Studge with Balo will never work half as well.

As it stands I have to say I've lost complete confidence in Liverpool and can only see a partnership of Balloteli and Sturridge as detrimental to the teams goal output. Sturridge will have to be the man to turn it around but I can't see it happening and he's too expensive for a third striker spot to gamble on. I'll be avoiding Liverpool for the foreseeable future I think.

That's true. What I'm saying is I doubt Rodgers will drop Balloteli and I don't think the partnership with Sturridge will work. Therefore I think Liverpool will get worse before they get better.

If you hate Liverpool then no, they're crap and only did well because of Suarez.

If you love Liverpool then yes, both are better than Messi and when combined morph into a robotic dinosaur that eats centre backs.

For me, I think there's a chance of Balo being dropped a few times, Hendo and Sterling cut benefit (though I might warn that I wasn't overly impressed with Studge the first 3 games of the season so I'll be watching very keenly).

Balotelli should be dropped - he's forgotten where the goal is. Sterling and Sturridge (S and S) may finally be the combination Liverpool need, but I'll wait a week or two before deciding whether Sturridge is worth reshaping my squad for.

Fab > Sanchez for me. Both Sanchez & ADM could potentially explode against weak defenses.

It's a tough one for me too, but I would also ditch Fab and get in Alexis, but that's only because I already have Costa. If i didn't have Costa I would also go via ADM. All depends on Fab injury news though...

A for me. Think Di Maria will be given a lot of space vs Arsenal, and doubt Chambers will be able to cope with it. Having said that though, United's defence is shambles.... Just not sure if it's worth -4p

I would switch. Considering how bad United's defense is and with Blind out as well, I fancy Sanchez to score. Don't see ADM getting more than an assist.

Not really. I just fancy Sanchez to outscore ADM by more than 4. What I'm predicting is that united won't keep a CS and Sanchez likely to be involved in any goals Arsenal score. United has RVP, Rooney, Falcao(potentially), Janujaz who could be involved.

This, if United manage to score there is a 70% chance ADM will be involved, the same goes for Sanchez, its a question of who do you think will score more, that said if ADM gets the points it´ll be tougher for you to get rid for Sanchez next GW.

Basically, do you fancy Sanchez to get a goal/assist (relying on baps) more than ADM? It's a tricky one, I'm not sure it's worth the hit (unless you'd end up taking a hit to do it next week?)

both Aggers and Costa have a higher ceiling than Alexis this gameweek, imo - based on fixtures.

Really? Why do you think Sanchez is limited to 1 goal/assist? I can see Arsenal scoring 2 easily and there's no reason they couldn't get more and Sanchez be involved in all of them

Honestly, I haven't put much thought to it 😀

But, you're right, I didn't really mean he is 100% limited to a goal/assist but what I was really trying to say was...

basically, out of the big 3 options, Sanchez has the worst fixture, relatively.(Although, I can easily fault this by saying with United's injury problems and their defensive form this season, it could potentially be the best fixture) but then again, in big games like this, even with the injuries I can't see United conceding a lot to Arsenal. Okay, I don't know where I'm going with this. Mind not in the right place.

          - Aguero VS Swans at home, City terrifying at the Etihad, Swans not such a good defence in terms of statistics, Aguero main scorer
          - Sanchez VS United at home, arguably "tougher" fixture, United not such a good defence but have shown a lot more defensive resolve recently!, Arsenal's main scorer AND assister

I take my point back. 🙂 But solely based on fixtures, I still think Aguero has the higher ceiling as I see United being tougher opposition than Swansea.

The only thing I can think of is that both teams will be negative in a "big-game" atmosphere, but there's no reason Arsenal won't see this as a chance to make a big statement at home and go for a big result with 2-3 goals

I've had Sanchez (C) the last two GWs, and reaped the rewards.

I think I'm going to stick with Aguero (C) Sanchez (V), but every time I've not captained Sanchez recently it's backfired. It's certainly tempting, without Carrick and Blind I think he could tear United apart.

      1. PlayPercentage

Yes, Sanchez (C) is very tempting.
He's like an out-of -position forward at the moment.
But Welbeck could just as easily grab a load of points this GW.

The worry I have about Sanchez, and it may be a fallacy, is that I never, regardless of injuries etc., think Wenger will beat Utd/most top teams. The worry is that they'll fall apart.

Having said that, Sanchez could probably bag a couple just on his own.

According to espnfc, an English bookmaker has opened odds of Benitez being the next Liverpool manager, at 6/1...

Rafa is still loved at Anfield, and his family also still live on Merseyside. He was recently quoted as saying that he misses his family and that De Laurentis (Napolis president) is "aware" of how much family means to him.
