Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 16

Sergio Aguero’s injury has the inevitable impact on our Watchlist rankings as Yaya Toure blinks brighter than ever on our radars, while in attack, it’s a case of weighing up the risks of sticking with a three-man forward line. You’ll find our current standings in your right-hand menu. Read on for the reasoning behind the ranks…

The Defence

Costel Pantilimon comes from nowhere to top our keeper rankings. Having usurped Vito Manonne between the sticks for the Black Cats, he’s also replaced him as our new budget darling. The giant Romanian has three clean sheets in the last four league outings and has the potential to extend that run of form over a strong short-term schedule (WHM, new, HUL, avl).

Given the lack of goal threat in the Sunderland back four, Pantilimon has a strong claim to find his way into our squads for the festive spell and beyond. Indeed, Man City in Gameweek 20 are the only stern tests on the horizon, along with a trip to Spurs (GW22) and United (GW27). Partner Pantilimon with Newcastle’s Tim Krul with the January wildcard once he returns from injury and you’ll have a keeper pairing that will cover you into the latter stages of the season.

Joe Hart looks the strongest option should you be searching for a more expensive one-stop shop. Although skipper Vincent Kompany is still struggling for fitness, City’s schedule looks smooth enough to promise defensive returns. With Sergio Aguero sidelined, we may also see Manuel Pellegrini temper his attacking tendencies, perhaps erecting a strong midfield shield around his back four as they sick to grind out wins over the busy Christmas spell.

The likes of Villa’s Brad Guzan and Hull’s Allan McGregor offer alternatives in the low-to-mid price bracket, with strong form and home fixtures to come. Guzan’s rotation with West Brom’s Ben Foster remains a decent option and alternative to the Krul/Pantilimon combination. McGregor can be paired with Swansea’s Lukas Fabianski but is less appealing given the latter’s suspension and the funds involved (10.0).

David De Gea’s outstanding form and the promise of further Chelsea clean sheets for Thibaut Courtois provide further alternatives for those who would rather go without a rotation pairing.

In defence, we’ve somewhat controversially kept faith with Branislav Ivanovic despite the claims for the inclusion of Cesar Azpilicueta. While the Spaniard’s returns have been stronger of late and his price remains more attractive, Ivanovic’s propensity to get into the box and on the end of set-plays continues to give him the edge – for now.

While the Chelsea man clings to top spot, Leighton Baines suffers a drop as the clamour to cover Villa’s recent upturn increases – Alan Hutton is the beneficiary, with his 4.3 price tag offering obvious value.

City’s aforementioned fixtures has Pablo Zabaleta ranked in the upper echelons – Gael Clichy is also a consideration here given his price, although he is arguably more under threat for starts over Christmas now that Aleks Kolarov is an option at left-back for Pellegrini.

Below this, an array of mid-price talent consisting of Neil Taylor, Aaron Creswell and Sunderland’s Santiago Vergini all figure, with fixtures and form adding weight to their claims.

The Midfield

Eden Hazard’s ascent up the Watchlist rankings is now complete as he sits at the summit ahead of the Christmas programme. While his away form continues to disappoint, only the woodwork denied him a goal at Newcastle last time out and, at Stamford Bridge, he’s proved irresistible. He’s scored in the last four home outings and goes into the Hull clash this weekend strongly backed for further returns.

Yaya Toure is another heavy-hitter who has slowly climbed our rankings. Boosted by Sergio Aguero’s absence, with spot-kicks in his armoury, the Ivorian looks set to provide the catalyst for a move away from the favoured 3-4-3 Fantasy Premier League formation, to a five-man midfield. With the fixtures so strong, it’s almost unthinkable to go into Christmas without City cover and Toure is arguably the most reliable source remaining in current form. Teetering on the suspension tightrope and set to depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, there are caveats to consider before investment, however.

Alexis Sanchez is sandwiched between that pair, with talk of fatigue providing a worrying backdrop for the frenzied festive spell. Having been rested for the midweek Champions League tie, we’d hope that Sanchez will be assured a continued run of league starts, although with Aaron Ramsey returning to goal scoring form, Arsene Wenger may feel more relaxed opting to rest Sanchez and his goal power in the weeks to come.

Ramsey crashes back in on the Watchlist amongst an array of mid-price targets that include Gylfi Sigurdsson and Stewart Downing – both have the short-term fixtures to flourish. Yannick Bolasie and Leroy Fer are your low-to-mid-price differentials should you wish to take a punt at a time when the emphasis is shifting back to points in midfield.

The Forwards

Aguero’s injury changes the landscape considerably and, suddenly, a three-man frontline appears to come with some risk attached.

Diego Costa’s form has wavered but he has to be backed to rediscover the goal touch – particularly with Hull City in his backyard this weekend. The gap between Costa and the Hazard midfield option has narrowed somewhat, however – arguably the Belgian offers greater explosivity, while Costa will be counted on to provide consistency over Christmas

Wilfried Bony is certainly consistent. Seven goals in his last nine outings has seen him thrust into our top three and he looks the obvious “safe” option as the Aguero replacement before his departure for the African Cup of Nations in January.

Diafra Sakho and Charlie Austin are the clear standouts in the budget bracket, backed by Tottenham’s Harry Kane. It’s a close call between the Hammers and QPR men – with Sakho likely to climb higher once we can be assured of his starts. Sam Allardyce faces a selection headache given Andy Carroll’s form and Sakho, whilst a bargain at 5.7, could face rotation over Christmas and has the African Cup of Nations in January.

Wayne Rooney remains our weapon of choice in the United ranks, although the lure of the pricey Robin van Persie is intensifying following his recent returns at St Mary’s. Despite that win, United’s form remains a concern and, right now, both would represent a gamble.

That’s also the case with both Christian Benteke and Edin Dzeko – for very different reasons. Benteke has shown enough to suggest that he’s returning to his potent best but Villa’s attacking threat remains questionable. For Dzeko, it’s all about fitness – should he come through tonight’s Champions League tie in Rome unscathed and showing form, he’ll enjoy a big rise up our rankings given the City schedule.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

          LiverPulis time?

Consider the man finished 11th with his leading trio of scorers being Messrs. Puncheon, Gayle & Chamakh.

Consider he turned a defensive sieve into stalwarts almost instantly with his fiery capped stare.

How or why would a club get rid of a manager who less than a year ago had the club fighting to win the league?

Not a Liverpool fan by any stretch but, that's a pretty harsh kneejerk move considering they sold their best player & lost their second best to injury...

I understand so he should be able to manage them for more than half a season before getting the hook.

I'm not saying the guy gets to keep this job for life but, 15weeks into the year seems a little short sighted imo.

At the very least, give him a month or two with a healthy Sturridge & Balo before giving him the axe.

So much this. We placed 2nd last season when i dont think anyone even realistically expected us to reach even top 4. Most people chalk that down to exclusively Suarez, but guess what - BR made the very best out of Suarez and built the team around him - something past managers didnt, and harvested success for his efforts. Should BR be penalized for having the luxury of the great player Suarez was? Should he not be given more than half a season before hes labelled as utter trash and sacked? I dont care one bit about rumours and gossip such as the above linked thread, any club that didnt have dressing room issues given the state that the team is in now, would never be a successfull club.

I'm not saying that Rodgers should be sacked or anything, but last season is not the season of reference for sure. You got anomalously better results than your performances would have got you on average. This was due to, for example, an anomalous number of penalties given to your advantage in second half of the season, lowest rate of shots blocked for several seasons' time now (of all PL teams), and an inflated conversion rate. I absolutely agree. And while im not looking for excuses, we have been less fortunate than what i would atleast label as "right" regarding penalties this season. Last season we got a lot of decisions our way as well as a lot of close, but correct calls were made. And some wrong. I wouldnt say that we were lucky last year, but we had periods where everything just seemingly went our way, where VERY few things had to change for us to be where we are this season, basically.

Agree. But so far Rogers buys in the transfer market have no worked out. Has Lambert, Lovern, and Lallana sitting on the bench.

You may actually win a game if you can tighten up at the back. Not an insult. But Pool could run wild because Suarez and Sturridge where scoring 4 goals a game so you good give up 3. The scoring has dried up time to learn to defend.

I'm not even a fan of pulis and I actually like Rogers. Just saying the buys were bad and the mentality on the pitch and within the team needs to change now that Suarez is gone.

The buys werent bad, in theory. Lovren was one of the best CB`s last season and he seemingly had the qualities we lacked. Leadership, calmness, abilities on the ball. Moreno seemed very exciting from La Liga/EL/Spain u21`s, and he still does. Hes just got ways to go. Lallana was one of the best attacking midfielders in the league last season. Markovic a huge talent. Can likewise. We all knew what Lambert brought, and Balotelli was quite the gamble, but i still think it was fine. For me its not so much about the players brought in, while you can say that they have underperformed (clearly), its more about the mentality from both manager and players. Stubbornness with keeping the same formation with the same type of players when it clearly works is becoming a huge issue, which is something i always liked about Brendan. When he came to the club he was set in his ways, wanted to play X style of football. But he quickly switched it up for a more effective way when it came along. I really dont know whats happened,

Other buys were arguable, but Balotelli was a stupid buy. Period.

I have to say that despite getting himself extremely stupidity sent off last night, Markovic looks like he could be a seriously dangerous attacking player. I base this on one thing only, which can eventually not be enough: the speed with which he moves with ball in feet. That combination of pace and smooth touch just gets you past the defenders.

Of course, if you hit them in the eye once you've got past them, it's no use, but I'd suppose he's learned something from the last night. Or for his sake, I hope he has.

Stupid? I dont agree one bit. Yes, hes a lunatic. Suarez was too. BR "fixed" him, atleast got him to focus to double his ability. We`ve all seen what Mario can do. His potential is in the world class area. Regardless, the whole Balotelli purchase was forced due to not securing our primary targets. Rodgers knew we had to get another striker in, time was running out, what was he supposed to do.

Idk about Markovic. The boy certainly has talent, but he also seems to have a serious problem with his antics. Hes a prospect that needs a lot of work, thats for sure.

It's not that Balo is lunatic. It's that he is not a very good player. He just doesn't have the level. We've all seen what he can do, and that's not all that much.

Having 3 or 4 moments that qualify for "world class" in 6 years of football tells you well enough that he is not and cannot be world class. Performances only are really good if you can repeat them. If you just shoot from long distance time after time and get every 50th shot in, it's not that you show glimpses of world class potential: it's that you're worse than average shooter, but try your luck all the time, and lo and behold, once a while you actually get lucky.

Im gonna have to disagree with you there. I think his potential is fantastic. Hes got a good scoring record playing for decent teams in serie a, good scoring record for his country, and hes young. I think youre basing your opinion too much on what hes delivered for Liverpool more than anything else. It hasnt been an easy enviroment beeing the striker in, and we all know about Marios attitude. I think that was the biggest issue when buying him in the first place, and i think thats what Rodgers thought he could change. Hence the gamble.

Simple minded manager with high demands - has to have it precisely his way or he threathens to walk. Hes not suited for clubs that aspire to achieve greatness - which i do believe that Liverpool is a club suited for that description. No offence to the man, but he belongs in the "saving clubs" business.

What do people think of this plan...
Fabregas > Yaya and play 3-5-2 (Boyd) this weekend with Austin suspended.

Next week benching Boyd and going back to 3-4-3.

People have mentioned Austin's away record (and even rotating with Siggy!), yet he has:
          WBA arse CRY SWA burnley

That's 3 home games + his former club in his next 5. Arsenal are anything but tight at the back as well so I'm not sure there would be any need to bench him.

Siggy also has Hull & qpr away, which as kind as you can get really, so wouldn't have a problem playing him.

If your front line read: Aguero - Rooney - Kane,

Would you be looking to shift Aguero to Costa, despite his average displays, or going with a Bony/Benteke/Sakho?

Sakho would also allow me to upgrade Boyd -> Yaya AND Kane -> Austin.

I overlooked Costa for the second time now (WC 3 weeks ago). Nervy, but there are simply better ways to spend the cash.
