Captain Sensible – Gameweek 16

Our weekly members article focussing on the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this Friday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

As Fantasy managers reassess their options in light of Sergio Aguero’s knee injury, Diego Costa has emerged as the number one candidate ahead of Chelsea’s home encounter with Hull. The Spain international has earned 36% of the votes cast so far and has scored in all but one of his six home appearances, with only QPR keeping him at bay.

Eden Hazard is hot on Costa’s heels, though. The wide man has received over 27% of the votes after scoring in each of the last four in front of his own fans – Hazard has averaged 10 points per appearance over those fixtures and has collected 10 bonus points, whereas Costa has failed to earn bonus at home since Gameweek 4.

Man City pair Yaya Toure (6%) and Edin Dzeko (3%) are also in contention ahead of a trip to Leicester. Toure has now netted in three of his last four, and with Aguero out of the picture, has dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal – as evidenced by last weekend’s spot-kick winner over Everton. Having just returned from injury, Dzeko will be looking to improve upon a series of displays which have seen him score in only one of his 11 league appearances so far.

Alexis Sanchez has collected 5% of the votes ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with a Newcastle side hit hard by injuries and suspension – a single goal in four since being moved back to the flank is hardly reassuring, though a midweek rest from Champions League duties could re-energise the Chilean. Robin van Persie is also back on the radar. The Dutchman’s brace at St Mary’s on Monday means he’s now bagged three goals and an assist in his last three ahead of a derby encounter at home to Liverpool.

Going on the voting so far, then, both Romelu Lukaku and Wilfried Bony look ideal differentials for Gameweek 16, with around 2% backing them with the armband. Lukaku has scored (and earned bonus) in each of his last four starts at Goodison ahead of QPR’s visit, whilst Bony welcomes Spurs to the Liberty in phenomenal form, after serving up seven goals and an assist in his last nine appearances.

All this talk of captaining Hazard and Costa but has anyone really considered the impact that Fabregas' suspension is going to have? Look what happened last week when Matic was missing, Fabregas is so crucial to their attacking play that there will definitely be an impact.

No one considered the impact that Matic's suspension would have last week, so we should definitely consider the impact that Fabregas' suspension could have this week, especially when choosing our captains. Although Chelsea have the best fixture on paper, will it turn out to be a Gold mine or just a pot of Fool's Gold for Fantasy Managers?

Fab wasn't there last year and Hazard was a flat track bully.

They also created a tremendous amount of chances, they just didn't have a striker to convert them

Think there is big difference away to Newcastle and home to hull.
Added the fact losing two in a row won't be what the want to happen.
For me more attacking will come through hazard now

I would almost argue the opposite and think there will be even more reliance on Hazard as creative force with Fab out.

Maybe not, but i would feel strange with all three strikers below 10.0 🙂 One must be expensive. And Rooney played well before knee injury. So i really hope he had just a bad day in the office against Southampton. In form he can score, assist and steal all 3 bonus points 😉

        Thinking of
        Aguero + Chadli + Marney ----> Bojan + Yaya + Oscar.

Austin benched this week. Bojan next two weeks. Siggy Gw19.

        Thoughts?

        1. Mata-Is-The-Juan
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

I'd rather have Kane over Bojan-- mainly cos I think he's a less risky option and will have more decent opportunities in front of goal. He's only 0.1M more expensive. Austin's also a solid shout if you have some money left over from your Kun sale.

Yaya's a solid bet. Not going for him cos I like my current midfield but that move makes sense. Oscar's also ticking along nicely as well.

Only concern is Bojan--A bit of a wild risk IMO

          1. King Kohli
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

Thinking of Kane too but Bojan is a gut feeling. Also Kane would be impossible to bench weeks 17 & 18. That would leave me with a benching headache for next week.

How do you think swa-tot will pan out? Does Kane take penalties if Soldado not on the pitch?

me, but only because i havent got a clue who to bring in...... arsenal are a funny team, they can seem diabolical for a few games, everyone sells, then they almost turn it around in an instant

my first thought was hamer time was great news! allowing me to bench fabi, however im also benching cesc & austin and with the duff doubt i could be forced doubling up on leicester defence with moore coming off my bench! already done aguero > rvp. any thoughts..

He's a menace, but only in as far as he screws up Baines' effectiveness.

Aguero & Chambers -> Dzeko & Baines for 2 FT sound good?

Looking to ship Baines after Qpr. Would rather have City/Chelsea def instead.

I have Ivan. Kompany is the only city def I'm interested in, but seems too early to get him in.

I seem to remember Jovetic was picked over Dzeko when both were fit at the beginning of the season. Only a matter of fitness then Jovetic will lead the line? I don't buy into the fact he can't play up top on his own. Similar player to Kun in terms of build and movement.

Played upfront alone a lot for Fiorentina.. so him not being able to play alone upfront is a myth.
