Captain Sensible – Gameweek 20

Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

    Who to get?

Sakho - LEI, sun, avl - great fixtures, fancy them to get minimum 2 clean sheets in those next 3, BPs magnet when they get a CS

Jenkinson - WBA, swa, HUL - good fixtures, good attacking threat, 2 great fixtures for clean sheets, however in the past west ham have had some trouble keeping CS's

    first to 5 wins

      WHU > Liverpool
      Adrian > Mignolet

I'm definitely not investing in Lpool defence myself.

Captain Sterling or Silva? Sterling would be a differential in my mini-league so worth the risk ? :/

If I had either I would cap Sterling. He looked good last game and has Leicester at home, it's a good bet.

Clyne can be brought in on Jan WC…till then his fixtures are not extra great either…
A Liverpool defender can be a good decision i think right now…or a Man City one...

1)Considering Sanchez is the most owned in the top 10k where does the returning wally fit in? Ppl going to double up on arse attack or is that a straight swap (presuming wenger keeps Sanchez on the left and Wally hits form)
    2) who is ditching costa to have both fab/haz in midfield. I've had Costa since gw1 but....mmmm that midfield duo
    3) would anyone consider three united considering their home fixtures coming up...perhaps shaw, adm & rooney..?

There was a lot of talk and excitement about Wally prior to his previous comeback and we all know how this ended... Let him play some games from the start and score some points first. Too many other options right now to waste time on Wally

      1) Wait and see with Wally - an ACLis no small matter and it takes time to get up to old speed and fitness. Mandatory to monitor though.
      2) I have all three and if anyone leaves it will be Costa.
      3) Too much - wait and see how LvG lines the team up now that Shaw is back. GW22 on looks appetising though

Three consecutive red arrows, and currently on
    Foster
    Baines Clichy Zab
    Siggy Sanchez Downing Silva
    Falcao Costa Austin

Well captain sensible article didn't help me much. Don't have Sterling so I'll have to pick Haz,Austin or Silva as a captain.

Can Silva keep scoring at this rate and how does Jovetic possible return affects to his performance.

Think I can't trust armband for Qpr player two weeks in row. Swans game ain't walk in the park.

So it has to be Hazard but his away form is still bit "meh".

    Any thoughts?

It seems a lot of us are tempted by a gamble this week as most of our teams are in general order with the core players. Typically:

    Yaya->Sterling.

Yaya's injury and Sterling's lack of big scores are major concerns with this gamble.

Tell me about the gamble you are thinking of this week.

Siggy -> Sterling. Owned Siggy from the beginning. It is tempting with Liverpool's fixtures and form also improving (although Sterling not finding the net too well). Swansea playing not very well and Bony leaving to ACON. Toughie it is. Your thoughts about it?

Hey lads, is it time to downgrade Baines? Have no wifi being abroad so help is much appreciated!

    Guzan
    Cahill | Baines | Dummett
    Hazard | Sanchez | Silva | Downing | Sigurdsson
    Costa | Austin

    Myhill | Kane | Naylor | Wisdom

    1 FT and 0.8m ITB

He's playing Hull, there's a change in formation on the cards for him to be oop. I'd hang on for a week at least.

    Hart 4.0

    Zab Baines Hutton (Clyne Duff)

Sterling (c) Yaya Hazz (v) Sanchez Siggy

    Sakho Austen (Kane)

    2 FT 1.3 ITB

Now that it looks like yaya is going to be ok should i just change duff to a cheapie such that i have defensive cover in case zaba is rotated again? Correct to bench Kane?

Sterling is the one I am so scared about this week. That guy has the potential to ruin everything, given that my differential MF (Milner) has turned out as useful as Mikel.

Only one DD score since week 5. That concerns me more. I'm more worried I don't own Downing - can see WHAM doing WBROM big time this week.
