Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Bony

Manchester City bolstered their forward options last week by snapping up Wilfried Bony from Swansea City. Arriving for a reported fee of £28m, the 26-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract for the champions and will be available for selection once his Africa Cup of Nations commitments with Ivory Coast come to an end.

Manuel Pellegrini took time out to discuss his swoop with the club’s official website and cited Bony’s excellent record in the Premier League as one of the key reasons for his acquisition:

“He is very difficult to mark because he is so strong. He is an intelligent footballer who has skill and power. His goals record has been excellent since he came to England. He adapted very quickly to the game here and I think he will settle in at City quickly. He will be a very good addition to our squad. We now have four top-class strikers and I am looking forward to seeing them work together.”

The History

Bony’s career got underway in 2006 with Ivory Coast outfit Issia Wazi. Having failed a trial at Liverpool a year later, the target man made his way to Czech club Sparta Prague, where he racked up 22 goals and five assists in 59 league matches, in addition to scoring 11 times in 20 European matches.

The Ivorian was on his travels midway through the 2010/11 season after being snapped up by Vitesse Arnhem. Bony netted just three times in seven appearances over the first few months but, after establishing himself as a first-team regular the following year, he bagged 17 goals and eight assists from 32 league and play-off matches and followed that up with an eye-catching 31 goals and eight assists from 30 league matches in 2012/13.

Bony’s exploits in the Eredivisie persuaded Swansea to shell out a club record £12m fee for his services in July 2013 and he wasted little time in settling at the Liberty. The Ivorian bagged 26 goals across all competitions for the Welsh club last year, producing 17 goals and four assists in the Premier League, before going on to deliver nine strikes and a pair of assists in 20 top-flight appearances this time around. On the international stage, the 26-year-old has also appeared 32 times for the Ivory Coast and found the net on 11 occasions.

The Prospects

As we’ve seen so often in the past, a move to the Etihad can sound the death knell for many a player’s Fantasy fortunes and in spite of his goal-getting abilities, the jury is out on whether Bony’s career at City will prove worthy of our consideration.

At Swansea, he was the first-choice forward in a lone striker system, providing the power, movement and guile to lead the line with devastating effect – no other player matched Bony’s 20 goals over the 2014 calendar year. In all likelihood, City’s embarrassment of riches up front should allow Pellegrini to roll out his preferred 4-2-2-2 on a regular basis but with Sergio Aguero an automatic pick, Bony is set to battle it out with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for pitch time alongside the Argentine.

With a starting role looking far from certain, the Ivorian’s prospects are also dented by a likely lack of spot-kicks. Five of Bony’s league goals for the Swans were converted penalties but, again, you’d expect Aguero to remain at the top of the pecking order, whilst Yaya Toure could hold onto his role as back-up option, leaving his compatriot out of the running.

What may fall in Bony’s favour, though, is his ability to steer clear of injury. On too many occasions over the past couple of years, City have had at least one forward sidelined through one problem or the other – with all three unavailable last month, Pellegrini was forced into adopting a false nine system to cope. Given that Jovetic and Dzeko have managed just over 1,300 minutes between them, there’s hope that Bony could benefit if he can steer clear of the treatment room – City have produced the highest number of attempts on goal this season and, when on the pitch, there’s no doubt he’ll be supplied with chances aplenty.

With doubts over his minutes, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” with this one. Depending on his nation’s progress in the Africa Cup of Nations, Bony may not be back on domestic duties until Gameweek 26, allowing us to build our Wildcard squads and assess the Etihad situation at a later date. Providing Aguero can keep fit, though, it’s difficult to see how the new boy will surpass the Argentine as our favoured City striker of choice in spite of a far more budget-friendly price tag.

From a Swansea perspective, Bony’s move currently puts the 6.5-priced Bafetimbi Gomis in the driving seat as the lone striker. With one goal to his name, though, the Frenchman has failed to replicate his predecessor’s clinical strike rate, whilst his weekend television interview – hinting at broken promises from the Swans hierarchy – hardly suggests all is well. It may well be that Garry Monk turns to loan signing Nelson Oliveira to solve his dilemma up top, then, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson owners will be hoping the Icelandic international can take over spot-kick duties as a result of the Ivorian’s departure.

I wouldn't be too bothered about United defensive cover. They look ropey (despite the clean sheets) and if LVG switches from the 3-5-2 (as United fans want) then they could easily start conceding more. Plus every United defender is injury prone.

      It's decent.

Could get jones for clyne if you really want the united defensive cover but I wouldn't do that personally.

I wouldn't get all of giroud, cazorla and Sanchez either. Change one of giroud or caz and work from there

I like this team. I'm a little wary about Elia still - especially with Mane due back soon - but as a fifth midfielder he's probably worth rolling the dice.

Re the Man U defensive cover - I wouldn't be too worried. You will play Terry and Clyne every week and the other three have good fixtures. All looks good to me.

So who is considering Cazorla (92 pts) in their teams?

It is arguable that Chadli (102 pts) and Downing (116 pts) are better and cheaper options.

Chadli...family grievance, don't trust spurs and I feel eriksen/Kane will steal points

Downing...poor run of fixtures, could argue west ham have peaked where they are right now

Cazorla...involved in a lot of what arsenal do right now, on penalties; arsenal improve and generally get better second half of the season and on a high currently I would've thought after beating man city.

A lot of it depends on how you are going to use that extra 1.5mil you save, but I would go for cazorla

Just because West Ham have tougher fixtures doesn't impede their ability to score goals. Offload the defence yes, Downing... not so much.

Depends how you look at it. The teams they are playing are more likely to have possession of the ball and stronger attacking stats hence impeding their ability to score goals because they see less of the ball

      The old value chestnut.

Which is better chadli and Cazorla rotating + 1.5m or Sanchez and boyd.

No Sanchez for me while he is playing out wide. I know there is the chance for the odd freak big score like he got a couple of weeks ago but any player can have one of them

Its a brave call to ignore Sanchez at the moment - but Im with you on this one. His price is sky high now and I think Cazorla and/or Giroud probably give better value Arsenal coverage.

Yeah I guess I only said rotating as you probably would have chadli as your fifth mid if comparing to boyd.

Chadli and siggy rotating (or similar rotation) and Cazorla playing all the time with 1.5m spare compared to Sanchez and siggy playing all the time with boyd fifth mid would be a better comparison

Very interested leaving out Sanchez, I think he is absolutely essential. From your yearly ranks, I can see you are an outstanding FPL manager. I usually average around 25-30k

When he was playing up front or through the middle I had him but he is not getting enough close range efforts to justify his price when playing wide imo.

He is a bit like Cazorla when playing wide in that his returns are severely diminished.

Re my rank I always try and look at the facts and not get carried away with the hype when choosing players. It doesn't always work for me (missed yaya last year and Costa this year) but I've managed to avoid lemons like adm by playing the game this way and not having Costa allowed me to make some serious ground prior to Xmas.

    Foster, Pantilimon
    Terry, Clyne, Wisdom, Naughton, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Cazorla, Downing, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Kane

    Leaves 0.1m

Naughton has just signed for Swansea.

Remember that Swansea have 8 clean sheets which is the joint third best in the league.

This is behind Chelsea and S'hampton.

It is level with WBA and Man. Utd.

So if i downgraded Aguero to Austin, how would i put the money to good use?

I'd drop Costa and get Ivanovic. Tbf, I'm not settled yet on the wildcard but will probably get three big defenders. I do not rate Swans defence at all.

I joke but tbh with you I'm intrigued to hear your thoughts on it.

You have a great rank and a good history and if it allows you to have something different to go on to win the thing then fair enough.

Need to be different to win it, but I'm not sure going without aguero/Costa is the right way of trying to do that

OK much appreciated. I want an Arsenal defender in my wildcard team (I think) but was hoping not to have to pay 5.9 for Kosc. Think he's worth it?

If you still have another wildcard, you can accept to offload Bellerin when he loses his place. If he indeed does.

    Two more questions.

    1. What's with all the elia love? His record is rubbish, am I missing something

    2. What's with all the bellerin love? Surely the 16m man will be back in in his comfortable rb position once he has had his little breather? Wanting an arsenal def option for 4.5m doesn't make it happen

    1. Camp No No

        As for the Elia love.

For Bellerin, right now there is a 4.4 Arsenal def option, and I wouldn't be so sure that it won't stay so. Arsenal's team is working wonderfully. Why would Wenger drop Bellerin?

    2. Coaly

Comfortable rb position? Not so sure about that, he's been getting skinned all season. All those yellow cards for pulling wingers shirts because he can't handle them. Think he's more of a CB and will act as back-up there. Sure, he'll rotate with Bellerin at times, but i think the latter has the spot now after the last 2 games and think he's worth the risk at that price.

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

This too. Wenger made it obvious that Chambers is primarily bought to play central positions. Who knows, maybe Chambers and Coquelin will be the much wanted new DM's.

Fair enough demi I'd rate your assessment over most but imo with a proper def unit in front of him and Koscielny back at cb I think there is very little chance of bellerin keeping chambers out.

Chambers was exceptional at rb last year keeping Clyne out of the team and I reckon Wenger will have him back in as soon as he's had his little rest.

        1. Demí
          • 13 Years

You could be right Dino, obviously none of us are wenger so we don't know what he's thinking. Bellerin has more pace to get up and down, while Chambers probably more strength and height which is important in certain games. I just think even if Chambers get his fair share of games, Bellerin could still be worth it if you have a solid defence with your subs coming in anyway.

Pelle was not a prolific goalscorer till Koeman took him to Feyenoord where he scored 55 in 66 games. Koeman does have a reputation for improving players.

Elia is a Dutch international that was good enough for Juve to pay €9m for back in 2011. He scored a fair few goals earlier in his career and was considered a very bright prospect. Koeman getting his career back on track is not beyond the bounds of possibility.

He's a gamble but probably not a terrible one at 5.5. Personally I'd rather have Puncheon or Moses at that price.

You might be right but between rotarisk and his past record (9m euro is pittance btw) I can't see him worth the gamble. Worth keeping an eye on yes but one I'd rather be 2 or 3 weeks late in than be left looking at him for weeks while I'm waiting for a ft to get rid of him.
