Scout Report – Callum McManaman

Tony Pulis made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of West Brom by acquiring Callum McManaman from Wigan. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a three-and-a-half year contract, the 23-year-old winger admitted the lure of the English top flight was too good to turn down:

“I’m really made up to have joined. When the chance came to move to West Bromwich Albion, and return to the Premier League, I couldn’t turn it down. This is a great move for me and I hope the Albion fans will get to see the best of me. Albion are a great club, with a good tradition. I can’t wait to get going.”

His new manager was also delighted with the deal. After chasing the wide man’s signature for a number of days, Pulis took to the West Brom website to talk up his prospects:

“I’m delighted we’ve got Callum and I believe he will be an exciting addition to our numbers. Callum is a player who can improve our options and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

The History

The Merseyside-born McManaman started his youth career at Everton but after eight years at the Goodison club, was released back in 2006 and signed for the Latics following year.

After a couple of seasons in the reserves under Roberto Martinez, McManaman became Wigan’s youngest ever player to feature in the top flight after earning his league debut in May 2009. The then-Latics boss was somewhat cautious with the winger’s pitch time, though, and McManaman played just 11 times across all competitions over the following three seasons, supplying two goals and a pair of assists for the DW club. A three-month loan deal at Blackpool in 2011/12 produced two goals in 14 appearances before he returned to his parent club in time for the following campaign.

It’s fair to say that McManaman has struggled for consistency in the final third, though. The highlight of his time at Wigan was a man-of-the-match display in the 2013 FA Cup Final, where he helped clinch a shock win over Manchester City, but aside from that, his displays have been erratic. Over a total of 109 appearances across all competitions, he mustered 17 goals and eight assists, with five strikes in 23 Championship matches this season proving his most prolific. The Baggies new boy has made four appearances for the England Under-20 side but is yet to manage the step up to senior level.

The Prospects

Having started with the predominantly left-footed Chris Brunt on the Baggies right in both of his league matches in charge, Pulis is now clearly determined to add more width to his side’s play to stretch opposition backlines. McManaman’s pace and trickery on the ball certainly adds a new dimension to the Midlands side and it seems likely he’ll be handed the position on the right, though he’s versatile enough to be fielded as an inverted winger out left.

As we’ve witnessed already, Pulis isn’t afraid to alter his tactics in accordance with opponent. At home to Hull on his debut at the helm, he rolled out a 4-4-2 with Saido Berahino alongside Brown Ideye up top, but despite netting his side’s winner, the former was moved to the left flank away to Everton the following Gameweek as Pulis moved to 4-5-1. With more options out wide, though, it remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will continue to utilise Berahino on the flank for road trips, though the youngster’s lack of physical presence suggests he’s not as well equipped to lead the line as a lone striker compared to the more robust Ideye or Victor Anichebe.

Certainly, Pulis’ record so far – one goal and two clean sheets in two matches – suggests that, as we’d anticipated, West Brom’s defence may be the safest option for those looking to invest in the Hawthorns side. Given that Chris Baird dropped out of the starting XI for the weekend cup win at Birmingham, Andre Wisdom remains the backline option of choice for many and it may well be that with a natural right winger in front of him now, putting defenders on the back foot and creating space behind, he’ll will be afforded greater freedom to forage forward and support more attacks in the opponents’ half.

Likely to come in at no more than 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McManaman has showdowns against Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six to cement a starting role in the Baggies XI and given that no other West Brom midfielder has scored more than once this season, the new boy certainly has the chance to stake a claim. With the “Pulis effect” already taking effect at the back, though, and the likes of Jason Puncheon, Adam Johnson, Victor Moses and Eljero Elia all vying for our attentions in the budget midfield bracket, McManaman will need to up his game in order to become a genuine contender for our 15-man squads.

How much does Costa's absence change the match balance, in your esteemed view? Worth hanging on to Aguero and/or Silva?

Definitely worth holding on to Aguero

Kompany will be less flustered with the perennial fights with Costa and will get more time to build from the back is one change that might happen

He'll get no space in behind mate.

Last 4 Chelsea-City PL games at Stamford Bridge, City have scored 2 goals in total. Chelsea have conceded 3 home PL goals all season. It's a striker they may be missing, not John Terry.

If anything it will make Chelsea more likely to play on the counter, a draw would leave them 5 pts ahead with better fixtures from here on in. Makes a low scoring game even more likely.

Not so much this season but under pressure he usually his default option is usually defensive solidity.

With Drogba in the team Chelsea are more suited to a direct counter-attacking style anyhow. Costa participates much more in open play than Drogba or Remy do.

I'd expect Ramires to play as well if there is any doubt about Fabregas. Which is an additional pointer in the same direction.

Was never planning on losing aguero, just using my wildcard to squeeze in costa with sanchez and hazard as well. I will mow delay the acquisition of costa, and hopefully his price will reduce slightly before i purchase him, but now the trick will be in leaving adequate funds left over to get him in 3 weeks time

So what do we think of this WC team?

    Panti, Mannone
    Bertrand, Terry, Kos, Wisdom, Baird
    Hazard, Sanchez, Oscar, Puncheon, Downing
    Kane, Aguero, Giroud

    with 0.2 ITB

    2 notes:
-GW23 I'll still have Austin and enough money to do Austin --> Aguero in GW24
-I don't know what to do with Downing... Downgrade to Boyd, to upgrade somewhere else? Only option for "upgrading" Downing is Henderson.

    1. Pompel
      • 10 Years

Keep Downing imho - still good value, and liv MUN could easily give attacking returns, especially with Sakho bak

      1. l@sp0
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Yeah maybe, I can only sell Downing for 6.1 so I would lose a lot of cash. But their fixtures are really bad.
ps: Sakho might get a ban, but you probably already know that

You could do Downing -> ADM and downgrade Oscar -> Boyd

Then if you only plan on playing one GK, Mannone -> Hamer, saves you some cash

      1. l@sp0
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

I fancy Oscar more than ADM for the moment. United is still not dissecting defences the way they should be with those players.

And I've thought about the Hamer transfer but if Panti gets injured, it might force me to take a hit. And Mannone at 4.2 only costs me 0.1 more 🙂

Really?! I like Austin, he's the spearpoint of QPR. But Kane is nailed on in a better team and with some luck, that forsaken Soldado-guy stays on the bench.

Austin is nailed on too. I agree Kane plays for the better team, but Austin plays for the more attacking team which is more important. The guy has most goal attempts in the league(!). Oh, he is also on penalties. Both guys have pretty bad fixtures and blank gw27 though..

... Kane playing in the hole lately dents his appeal a lot! His ownership is also like 90% in the top 10k, so might be risky to go without, but I genuinely believe Austin is the better pick.

With Ivan/Bertie/Kosc, I don't think you should spend more money on your 4th def. If you add Jones to that, I think it's too much money spent in defense and very difficult to pick 3 from those. Benched points galore.

You make a good point but what do you think of the following defence?

              Ospina - Foster
              Jones - Terry - Bertrand - PVA - Baird

I like it! With good fixtures for both ARS and WBA the weekly GK decision might cause some headache but you need a back-up for Ospina in case he's droppped.

    Current misfits lineup:

    Pantilimon
    Terry, Bertrand, Clyne
    Hazard, Sanchez, ADM, Chadli
    Giroud, Aguero, Kane

    Subs: Hamer, Boyd, Wasilewski, Wisdom

    3.0m ITB

Which option would you go for:

    A. Chadli to Cazorla (-4)
    B. Chadli to Walcott (-4)
    C. Chadli to Sterling (-4)
    D. Nothing, play Chadli

With the possible exception of Hazard, Eriksen would be the first midfielder in my wildcard selection. Fewer risks than some of the other popular choices: Sanchez, Di Maria, Oscar, Yaya, and his team-mate Chadli

His score against the top 8 teams in the league:
    TOT 2
    SOU 2
    LIV 5
    mun 2
    MCI 2

    ARS 2

    Please help.

I'm on WC and team was all set, until Sigurdsson, and now Costa will miss three games.

There is no one I consider worth having at Sigurdsson' value (£6.3m selling) so I went for Elia.

But now Costa is out I'm thinking of bringing in Giroud, and getting Sterling with the money saved...or maybe treating myself to a premium defender.

    Foster - Krul

    Wollscheid - Clyne - PVA - Wasilewski - Baird

Hazard - Sanchez - ADM (Was Fabregas) - Elia (Was Sigurdsson) Boyd

Costa (Has to go) Kane Aguero

    This game is so stressful

      • 9 Years

My advice, don't get over excited because Costa is out and let it have a domino effect on your team.
I'd rather Mane than Elia BTW.
Costa > Giroud is sensible, then Elia > Sterling if you have the money the week after but not keen on that

Cheers, I'm on WC so I easy to play around with the team.

Can't afford to keep Costa as I'm sure he'll have a minimum three game ban, and it seems crazy to keep 3m in the bank.

WWC already, WC in pocket, sold Siggy this week for AJ before his sus (my FT)

    Foster MyHill

    Terry Fonte PVA Baird Wasil
    ADM Sanchez Haz AJ Boyd
    Aguero Costa Kane

For me it's a choice between these two options:

    a) Costa > Giroud leaving 3 million ITB plenty to upgrade defence/mid positions at any time
    b) Costa > Falcao, 0.7 ITB

When comparing Kane and Austin, it all boils down to:

    Goal threat --> Austin
    Involvement --> Kane

Too bad that in the last few games, it's Goals --> Kane and not Austin

Yes - Austin with better fixtures going forward too, plus there is Eriksen as a midfield alternative to Kane ... who would you want from QPR apart from Austin though 😯

Maybe that's the reason why he plays for QPR and not a top 6-10 club. First thing i'm looking at when it comes to form for strikers it's goal conversion and he's nowhere.

Yes that's true. But I meant involvement in general, not only in the goals.

I prefer B, despite ADM's poor form. Moses is quite expensive for 5th mid in 3-4-3 though and will bring some benched points. On the positive side, GW27 when CHE and TOT have blanks you're gonna need your bench and that week Stoke have Hull at home...
