Scout Report – Callum McManaman

Tony Pulis made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of West Brom by acquiring Callum McManaman from Wigan. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a three-and-a-half year contract, the 23-year-old winger admitted the lure of the English top flight was too good to turn down:

“I’m really made up to have joined. When the chance came to move to West Bromwich Albion, and return to the Premier League, I couldn’t turn it down. This is a great move for me and I hope the Albion fans will get to see the best of me. Albion are a great club, with a good tradition. I can’t wait to get going.”

His new manager was also delighted with the deal. After chasing the wide man’s signature for a number of days, Pulis took to the West Brom website to talk up his prospects:

“I’m delighted we’ve got Callum and I believe he will be an exciting addition to our numbers. Callum is a player who can improve our options and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

The History

The Merseyside-born McManaman started his youth career at Everton but after eight years at the Goodison club, was released back in 2006 and signed for the Latics following year.

After a couple of seasons in the reserves under Roberto Martinez, McManaman became Wigan’s youngest ever player to feature in the top flight after earning his league debut in May 2009. The then-Latics boss was somewhat cautious with the winger’s pitch time, though, and McManaman played just 11 times across all competitions over the following three seasons, supplying two goals and a pair of assists for the DW club. A three-month loan deal at Blackpool in 2011/12 produced two goals in 14 appearances before he returned to his parent club in time for the following campaign.

It’s fair to say that McManaman has struggled for consistency in the final third, though. The highlight of his time at Wigan was a man-of-the-match display in the 2013 FA Cup Final, where he helped clinch a shock win over Manchester City, but aside from that, his displays have been erratic. Over a total of 109 appearances across all competitions, he mustered 17 goals and eight assists, with five strikes in 23 Championship matches this season proving his most prolific. The Baggies new boy has made four appearances for the England Under-20 side but is yet to manage the step up to senior level.

The Prospects

Having started with the predominantly left-footed Chris Brunt on the Baggies right in both of his league matches in charge, Pulis is now clearly determined to add more width to his side’s play to stretch opposition backlines. McManaman’s pace and trickery on the ball certainly adds a new dimension to the Midlands side and it seems likely he’ll be handed the position on the right, though he’s versatile enough to be fielded as an inverted winger out left.

As we’ve witnessed already, Pulis isn’t afraid to alter his tactics in accordance with opponent. At home to Hull on his debut at the helm, he rolled out a 4-4-2 with Saido Berahino alongside Brown Ideye up top, but despite netting his side’s winner, the former was moved to the left flank away to Everton the following Gameweek as Pulis moved to 4-5-1. With more options out wide, though, it remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will continue to utilise Berahino on the flank for road trips, though the youngster’s lack of physical presence suggests he’s not as well equipped to lead the line as a lone striker compared to the more robust Ideye or Victor Anichebe.

Certainly, Pulis’ record so far – one goal and two clean sheets in two matches – suggests that, as we’d anticipated, West Brom’s defence may be the safest option for those looking to invest in the Hawthorns side. Given that Chris Baird dropped out of the starting XI for the weekend cup win at Birmingham, Andre Wisdom remains the backline option of choice for many and it may well be that with a natural right winger in front of him now, putting defenders on the back foot and creating space behind, he’ll will be afforded greater freedom to forage forward and support more attacks in the opponents’ half.

Likely to come in at no more than 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McManaman has showdowns against Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six to cement a starting role in the Baggies XI and given that no other West Brom midfielder has scored more than once this season, the new boy certainly has the chance to stake a claim. With the “Pulis effect” already taking effect at the back, though, and the likes of Jason Puncheon, Adam Johnson, Victor Moses and Eljero Elia all vying for our attentions in the budget midfield bracket, McManaman will need to up his game in order to become a genuine contender for our 15-man squads.

I don't know what you are saying here doos? He has only scored points in 2 out of the last 6 and has not been getting anywhere near the quality of chances he was getting earlier in the season when playing through the middle. He looks to be creating more but if you take the two deflected goals off him c stoke (one through the wall and one off shawx heel to beet the gk near post for the second time in the game) his record since being pushed back out wide is terrible.

For those of us who dont have a 2nd WC to use later in the season surely going with 2 Goalkeepers makes sense in order to dodge missing GW's and potentially gain a double? Really like the look of Foster Myhill but leaning towards Panti(4.5 for me) and Krul instead with a WBA defensive double up in defense(Wisdom + Baird/Lescott)..
Overthinking? or stick with Foster Myhill + Wisdom

    1. Valar(Keith)

Krul looks like he has no chance of missing a GW and Panti has a small chance for a missing GW and a double at some point

While trying to put my wc together I have been pondering my ideas on value and where to spend my cash. The value in the different positions is something I have always struggled to get my head around.

The difference between a cheap defender and a premium defender compared to a cheap mid and an expensive mid or a cheap forward and an expensive forward is not the only thing we have to look at when trying to ascertain which is the best value. The waters are further muddied by rotation according to fixtures, predictability of clean sheets or attacking returns and variability of returns.

We don't normally rotate forwards based on fixtures unless they are cheap but if you do you always run the risk of missing a harry kane haul v Chelsea for example. I think the higher price you pay for players the more fixture proof they tend to be and this is one of the main reasons people would normally go three heavy hitters in attack (Obviously not the case this season due to lack of options and kane proves the exception to the rule as he is the fpl golden ticket as an underpriced player).

The same applies to a certain degree with midfielders although because we have 5 options here rotation does become a little easier to predict but again there is always the potential to miss out on a boyd haul somewhere along the way.

In defence the chances of missing out in a 20 point haul due to rotation are far less and while cs might not necessarily be easier to predict the consequences of getting the selection wrong are not as severe (compounded by the fact that rivals almost never captain a defender further limiting potential damage).

Defence is also hamstrung by the variation of points. You can have a man city defender (like I did with zabaletta) who has scored 32 points in his previous four games that after you bring them in score 3 points over the next 4 games. This shows the good and bad of premium defenders in my opinion. If they score as expected then you have the potential to make real headway on the overall rank but if they do as zabaletta did then you have a vast chunk of cash doing nothing. This almost never happens with premium mids or forwards.

In traditional ffs tldr summation the lack of predictability of the premium defenders compared to the premium mids and forwards make it much more tempting to find value in defenders over the other two categories.

Very nice. Debuchy Cahil and Tompkins must be amongst the most unlucky defenders this season from a points return pov. If wham had decent fixt I'd be seriously tempted by Tompkins.

Zabaleta has been a proper fail indeed but then no one would guess their defensive form would go down like that, also the Zabaleta pick has the attacking threat with it and that is one of the main reasons people have picked him(and he did find himself in positions to score/assist in that time you mention). That said if you pick the right premium defenders at the right time the benefits could be huge and there are many reliable options in the mid-price bracket for Midfielders and forwards.

I fully agree but the lack of predictability, variance of potential hauls and difficulty rotating based on fixtures in other positions do make it more tempting to find value in the defensive positions Imo. (And this comes from someone who loves premium defenders as differentials)

I think this is all true, but isn't it all also reflected in the relative 'premium' you a paying?
Premium defenders are the same price as mid price attackers so... it's kind already built in.
Just assess everyone on points vs cost regardless of position.

The price thing is not fully true as if you pay 3m more for ivanovich this is the same as paying for say bony over a dirt forward. Realistically you are looking at 2.5m over 5.5m (as this is probably the base level for a reasonable scoring forward and the different between scoring def 4.5m and Ivan. What you are looking at then is the difference in points for the extra spend which is complicated by the rotation and potential for big hauls further up the pitch. I wish it was simpler but if anything I think I am over simplifying it.

Costa reminds me of Alf. Anyone else think the same? Either that or the Swedish chef of muppet fame.

Any harm in transferring costa out right now. Or wait for him to get flagged ?

We should know by tonight if there is going to be a challenge to the charge. Unlikely imo.
      I'd hold off for now.

I'd already anticipated disciplinary trouble for Costa so booted him long ago. Kun was the replacement. Just need Kun, Kane and Kaustin as your front 3. Forget Gru - a serial timewaster and points sucker.

Does it matter either way outside of counting towards transfers in/out?

    Which one do you prefer?

    A) Pelle + Cazorla

    B) Giroud + Mane + 1.3 ITB

In B) I could have Moses as a 5th mid in case Mane doesn't play this weekend and GW27 Moses would be nice to have with them facing Hull at home.... Tempting.
