Scout Report – Juan Cuadrado

After days of speculation, Chelsea confirmed the signing of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado on a four-and-a-half-year contract on Monday evening. Speaking to the club’s official website, the Colombian midfielder – who arrives for a reported fee of £27 millionadmitted that he can’t wait to work under the guidance of Jose Mourinho:

“It is really going to be brilliant to work with one of the best coaches anywhere in the world. I’m very proud to be playing for him and I think he is going to help me grow into a better player…I’m a quick and positive player and I hope to show that on the field of play and help all of my teammates. The best part about this dream is that I’m going to be part of such a big club. For me that is a huge motivation to perform well.”

The History

Cuadrado began his footballing education at Atletico Uraba in his native Colombia, at which point he operated primarily as a forward. His searing pace and ability to outfox defenders prompted a change of position onto the right wing, which ultimately resulted in a move to Colombian first division side Independiente Medellin.

In 2009, Cuadrado made the step up to the European leagues, securing a five-year deal with Italian top-flight side Udinese. After only managing 20 league appearances over the course of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns, the sprightly winger joined struggling Serie A outfit Lecce in August 2011 in an attempt to salvage his floundering career. Although Lecce eventually succumbed to relegation that season, Cuadrado impressed sufficiently to earn a move to Fiorentina the following summer.

Since his move to Viola, the 26-year-old has been a mainstay in manager Vincenzo Montella’s first XI, earning 68 league outings in the previous two seasons. His 15-goal haul in all competitions last term alerted a bevy of clubs throughout Europe, including La Liga giants Barcelona, who held talks with Cuadrado during the summer transfer window.

Cuadrado also caught the eye with his performances for Colombia at the World Cup in Brazil. The 26-year-old recorded one goal and four assists for Los Cafeteros, tying with Germany’s Toni Kroos as the tournament’s leading assist provider. So far, he’s played for his country on 37 occasions and found the net five times.

The Prospects

With Andre Schurrle packed off to Wolfsburg and Mo Salah heading to Fiorentina on loan, Mourinho is clearly keen to freshen up his options on the right flank. Undoubtedly, Cuadrado’s arrival at Stamford Bridge casts doubt over Willian’s status as one of the regualars in Chelsea’s starting line-up. Although the Brazilian conforms perfectly to the Special One’s desire for industrious two-way wingers that embrace defensive duties, Willian has managed just one goal and two assists over 22 league appearances thus far. Cuadrado’s inclusion could transform the south London outfit into an even more terrifying prospect on the counter-attack.

Cuadrado boasts the ability to initiate powerful, sinuous runs that put opposition defenders on the back foot. Compared with Willian, the attacking stats are stacked firmly in his favour: so far this season, Cuadrado has bettered the Brazilian for minutes per shot (27.3 to 39.8) and key passes (40.2 to 67). Furthermore, his work ethic is also superior – he’s ahead of Willian for tackles (1.2 to 1.1) and interceptions (0.9 to 0.4) per appearance over 2014/15, highlighting just why Mourinho has brought him on board.

The South American possesses the versatility to play in any of the front three positions in Chelsea’s typical 4-2-3-1 formation, as evidenced by Cuadrado’s recent minutes in the second striker role for Fiorentina. Certainly, this affords Mourinho the opportunity to rotate the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar should he wish to do so, though whilst the latter has been victim to his manager’s tinkering on occasion this term, the Belgian looks immune to Jose’s rotational whims.

Setting you back 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League, the new boy has been placed in the same price bracket as the likes of Oscar, Christian Eriksen, Santi Cazorla and Raheem Sterling. Given that Oscar, Hazard and Cesc Fabregas sit amongst the top five regular midfielders in terms of points per appearance this season, Cuadrado faces a tough task to battle past that trio as our preferred route into Mourinho’s flourishing midfield. On the other hand, Willian’ paltry 2.8 points per appearance suggests the Colombian could be the answer if Mourinho is looking for more output from the right flank.

The inclusion of another potent goal threat in Chelsea’s side might also impact Fabregas’ already astonishing assist output. With the Spaniard (37.4%) just edging out Eden Hazard (36.2%) in terms of ownership, we’ll be keeping a close eye on how Cuadrado’s presence on the pitch influences this internal contest. Having weathered the storm from their title rivals Manchester City, Chelsea now face a favourable run of fixtures up until their blank Gameweek 27, consisting of a visit to Aston Villa and home ties against Everton and Burnley.

These matches could serve as a perfect introduction to the unique rigours of the Premier League for Cuadrado and potentially allow Mourinho to rest some key players before the Capital One Cup Final on March 1, as the Blues look to avenge their New Year’s Day mauling at the Lane and pick up the first silverware of the season.

So, I need to make a couple of changes. How does this look?

    Bertrand → Targett
    Moses → Silva

It looks vgood as long as Targett starts.
I don't expect Saints defence to be as good without Bertrand and Alderweireld though.

oh nm my bad misread your team,i would drop moreno for cheapie his fixtures are shyte and use that to go eriksen to silva not because of the fixtures as much as his blank gw27 so that you cnan avoid having to waste transfers transferring him out and in agaiun

It's your call. Maybe I am just a little sceptical of Spurs.

You do have good Arsenal cover but maybe downgrade Giroud to Austin and change Eriksen to Walcott, Ozil, Silva, or Di Maria..

Could some kind person please explain to me when is the best time to distribute wildcards and FTs around the DGW?
i.e. before/after re: spurs, chelsea players etc. and any other considerations.

    1. kalmoffit
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

You have two choices. Either get the DGW players in gradually beforehand then wildcard to fix your team. Or widcard beforehand and then fix your team later.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Or plan well enough not to use a wildcard for that purpose.

The FA Cup semi-finals will create more DGWs. Why not wait till then?

Does anyone think they know who is the most nailed in man city's defence?
Is zabaleta the best bet now that sanga has had his turn? Clichy has looked the most consistent but with easy fixtures coming up will Kolarov get a run? Is there a case for Demi?

I know the risks (I had zaba over Xmas which cost me dearly). But if I can pick someone up who can play 3/4 games I am happy with that. They have the better fixtures and their defensive stats aren't bad.
Might just splash out on Kompany but his injuries seem to be coming pretty frequent now.

I imagine Bony will lead the line with Aguero tucked behind. They will probably adopt a similar formation as a couple of seasons back with Bony in the Tevez role.

    Krul (Panti)
    PvA, Terry, Wisdom (Wasilewski, Bertrand*)
    Sanchez*, Hazard, ADM, Downing (Boyd)
    Giroud, Aguero, Kane

    1FT, 2.9ITB

Thoughts on Downing -> Sterling this week? Willing to take a drop on Bertrand as dealing with Downing is more of a priority imo. Next week I'll do Bertrand -> Bellierin before he has LEI.

Do you even watch the games? Swansea had 2 long range efforts and one half volley inside the box, Newcastle scored on an own goal, and before that they shut out United and Arsenal.

I really like C BUT simply due to chelsea's next 3 games...but the problem then is
    - Either i will have to use my transfer in gw27 to remove Oscar as i wont have 11 starting, thus not being able to have 2FTs on gw28 which i wanted to do 3 transfers in dgw..OR
    - I just go 10 players in gw27, but then again, i would want costa for chelsea's dgw as opposed to oscar

Don't think any team's defence is essential at the moment. With the fixtures and value to be had, Arsenal are as near to essential as there is for me (Ospina/Bellerin)

Don't think Southampton will get close to their early season defensive success but will still be good to have.

      Depends how you feel...

Go without and every time they concede you have a chance of getting a jump on millions of Soton picks...or be conservative and safe.
Just because a team has a quality defence doesn't mean they aren't capable of shipping the odd goal a game for a while...and nor are they the only team capable of a CS on any given week.

Exept City magically got a ton of penalties whenever Aguero were injured. Cazorla was even like third in line for penalty duty for Arsenal, only after Giroud and Alexis missed their attempts and Arteta out out play. Its so frustrating.

It is luck. If you want to chase penalty takers, then youre not going to be very successful. Not to mention he could just as easily have missed that one against Villa, had Guzan not been wearing oven mitts.

No it's not....If you pick a penalty taker from a team that has plenty of touches in the box you increase your chance of getting more pens...you just do....City and Liverpool last season were good examples

No-one complains when Aguero or Kane or Austin etc score from the spot. There's more to Cazorla's scoring than just penalties.

That was Kane`s first penalty? And Aguero scores 20 goals from open play every season, Cazorla simply does not. 5 goals out of 6 this season has been penalties and half his assists have been super cheap.

The shot that hit the post was his only one, and the assists he got were extremely cheap. When you backpass and someone belts it in first time from 20 yards, i hardly think of that as quality.

    Hey guys,

Thoughts on a Bertrand swap for this team? http://imgur.com/3AeT0Ng

Sell value is 5.8 and I have 0.4m in the bank although I kind of want to save that for Cameron/Baird swaps.

I know that Clyne is probably the stand out pick but any others out there? I'd like Clichy or Zouma but can't risk a player like that when I'm still holding Cameron/Baird.

    Cheers!

With the uncertainty regarding which ARS attacking asset(s) to combine with Sanchez going forwards, is anyone considering starting with a different mid/striker this week (since they are away to Spurs anyway = not easy) with a plan to bring in whichever looks best next week for LEI? We'll know the teamsheets before the LEI game also, so this could be a smart play (is what I'm thinking)....

Bear in mind there's a lot of estimation going on due to the Wildcards. Wildcard transfers don't count, and although the Price Sites do know how many WCs are being played, they can't tell which players are being transferred using these WCs - so they have to make some estimates. This will still have a knock-on effect into next week and beyond but it's only really the players with lots of transfers (like Kane or Sanchez, for example), where there is scope for there to be fairly significant errors. My advice is to look at FISO's transfers in/out per day - and if there are a lot in here then you've a good idea who's going up or down, although maybe not when.
