The Digest – Gameweek 23

Gameweek 23 is put to bed with a look at Jon Walters’ prospects, the plentiful options at the Emirates and the battle between Sergio Aguero and Daniel Sturridge for our attention in the premium forward bracket.

The Player

Having been backed in the Scout Picks, there were high hopes for Walters heading into a home showdown against travel-sick QPR. Few could have imagined what was to follow, though, with the 5.2-priced Stoke midfielder scoring all three goals in a 3-1 win in Harry Redknapp’s final match in charge of the visitors.

Walters had started the Potters’ previous Premier League encounter at Leicester as a lone forward, due to Peter Crouch’s lack of form and Mame Biram Diouf’s unavailability due to the African Cup of Nations. The Republic of Ireland international duly provided the assist for Bojan’s winner in a 1-0 victory. Diouf returned to the bench against the R’s alongside Crouch and with Bojan suffering a season-ending knee injury in the FA Cup against Rochdale, Mark Hughes decided to continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Stephen Ireland handed the role in “the hole” behind Walters.

Given the fact Diouf had started ten of the last 11 Gameweeks prior to departing for international duties, though, he could well return to the starting XI for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle – which leaves Hughes with a dilemma. Walters, could, potentially, be set for a move to the right wing in order to accommodate the Senegal international again; indeed, Hughes shifted him to the flank after throwing on Crouch as a sub against the R’s just after the hour mark.

The next seven Gameweeks do offer Stoke a pretty favourable schedule, with home matches against Man City, Hull, Everton and Crystal Palace, allied with trips to Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Brom. Snapped up by over 40,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers this week, Walters certainly looks amongst the pick of the budget midfielders right now and with seven goals to his name, is just strike away from equally his most prolific season for the Potters. So far, he’s netted 35% of his attempts on goal and whilst it’s debatable whether he can sustain such ruthlessness, those upcoming fixtures look too good to ignore for many.

The Team

Following the resounding 5-0 victory against Aston Villa, confidence in Arsenal’s Fantasy assets has never been higher as the fixtures smile kind for Arsene Wenger’s side. After Saturday’s north London derby, the Gunners have home matches against Leicester, Everton and West Ham coupled with trips to Palace and QPR and, with viable options throughout the team, many would surely look to get more than three Gunners in their 15-man squads if permitted.

Impressively, Sunday’s emphatic win came without the hamstrung Alexis Sanchez, with Santi Cazorla continuing his sensational recent form with a goal and two assists to earn a 17-point return. Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott both scored for the second successive match in all competitions as Wenger’s midfield tore the midlands outfit apart, whilst Olivier Giroud’s five strikes and an assist in his last six appearances highlight a real upturn in consistency since returning from injury.

Arsenal’s rearguard also offers us several options. Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker offer the security of starts, but it’s David Ospina and Hector Bellerin who have come to the fore as cheaper, if slightly riskier, routes into the Gunners backline. The 4.8-priced Ospina has overseen clean sheets in each of his three league outings as the new number one, whilst Bellerin’s goal and subsequent 12-point return looks to have staved off the threat of Calum Chambers at right-back in the absence of Mathieu Debuchy. Picking the right three looks key, though given their form at both ends of the pitch, Wenger’s charges – as evidenced by the Gameweek 21 win at City – look capable of producing in any given Gameweek right now.

The Talking Point

With Diego Costa still suspended for another two matches following his stamp on Emre Can, a straight swap to Sergio Aguero looked the most obvious option for most. However, Daniel Sturridge’s lively introduction from the Liverpool bench against West Ham on Saturday may have given some pause for thought.

Certainly, Aguero has the fixtures. With Hull, Newcastle and Leicester in the next five, many will be looking to hand him the armband, never mind draft him into their starting line-ups. The Argentine lacks form, though; four appearances in all competitions without a goal is his longest barren streak of the season and he’s yet to rediscover the displays that saw him rack up 14 goals prior to his injury against Everton in Gameweek 15.

The case for fit-again Sturridge is compelling. Coming in at 11.1 to Aguero’s 12.7 in FPL, he looked sharp right from his introduction on 67 minutes at Anfield and his smart control and finish for the hosts’ second showed little sign of rustiness. There is no doubt he faces a tougher schedule (eve, TOT, sou, MCI) in the short-term and with Brendan Rodgers confirming he isn’t ready to start, the case for his immediate inclusion is somewhat lessened.

As we saw on Saturday, though, his predatory instincts have remained very much intact in spite of being sidelined since late August. Bearing in mind the Reds have fired more shots and attempts on target than any other side over the last eight Gameweeks since moving to a 3-4-2-1, Sturridge will continue to be handed chances in spite of Rodgers’ intentions to ease him back into action.

So far, Fantasy managers have sided with Aguero – over 84,000 have snapped him up this week, more than any other player in the Gameweek. Sturridge’s display has also turned heads and, with over 54,000 opting for the Liverpool man so far, it’s clear our faith in both is on the rise right now. With Costa set to return to the fray in Gameweek 26, we’re set for a fascinating battle, where all three big-hitters could slug it out for our affections over the final few months of the season. Choosing the correct option or the right window to switch allegiance, could well be the deciding factor throughout mini-leagues and the overall standings.

Defence looks ok if not on WC.

Austin would be the player I would get rid of next.

If Walcott doesn't start against Spurs, thinking Walcott + Austin --> Countinho + Giroud(-4) next week.

What do you think of that?

you mean to say that one player joining a club that ISN'T in crisis and has all the pieces in place aside from a DM is enjoying better form than another player joining a club that IS in crisis and has bought and sold nearly 20 players in the course of 9 months where the formation and his position is changing regularly..

        So true.

LVG is considered an egomaniac even in Holland. He insists his players change positions and styles to from one game to the next to suit his whims (tactical adjustments as he calls them). The team never has a settled pattern of play.

He buys Di Maria for £60m but wants him to be Robben. He decides Rooney is not a natural striker (despite a phenomenal scoring record) and plays him in midfield. He treats Mata and Falcao as if they were rather dubious substances found on his shoes.

What he is doing with Falcao is beyond belief. The guy was one of the three best strikers in the world - arguably the best - before his injury. Now he's fit again and all he needs is regular games and the support of his manager. Instead - in the team, out of the team, "we don't know whether we want him in the summer", "I don't think he's fit enough to play full games"...

Falcao and Di Maria should be the first 2 names on the teamsheet and know they are. Then you'll start to see what they can do.

        Falcao
        Mata Rooney Di Maria
        Blind Fellaini
        Shaw Rojo Jones Smalling
        De Gea

        What's so difficult about that?

Thanks 🙂 I'm currently in 1st year of Bio & Chemical sciences in UCC and am undecided if I'd prefer to go into Biochemistry, Physiology or Neuroscience for my degree at the end of 2nd year.
What is it that you / your classmates now do with your Neuroscience degrees is what I'd really like to know?

        1. Somalion

          Well, loaded question certainly.

I'm currently studying medicine, long term goal is to be a neurologist.

I have a number of friends who are doing PhDs be it in Trinity or any other college, some are doing Masters (two of them anyway, Masters in Immunology and then they are planning on entering PhDs in Neuroimmunology). A couple others are going the medicine route as well.

Physiology I don't know too well, my feeling is it can be quite broad but there are certainly opportunities for PhDs and the likes.

Biochem tends to have a good deal of PhD spots or other spots available. I know a few from that class are doing PhDs and my girlfriend did Biochem and started off as a research assistant but plans on going on to do a PhD.

Speaking from a Neuro standpoint, I know that it is not the easiest field in Ireland to get PhD positions at this point in time (or further research positions) so I think people tend to look at places like England. I wouldn't know too well with the other courses.

But the most important thing is you do what you are interested in, best advice I could possibly give. I know you're stuck at a crossroads here but very often these things are interchangeable, I know biochems entering the neuro field, I know neuros entering the immunology field etc.

And I might add, it was an absolute joy. Loved every (or at least nearly every) moment of it, it is very fascinating though I accept that is just my biased view 😀

I'm also thinking about Medicine, just been looking into how financially realistic it would be for me a lot recently.

Think I'm leaning towards Biochem at the moment as I'm not sure I'd like to go into research and it would have probably a broader job prospectus with just a degree than the other two (Chemical industry) - but as you say, these things are interchangeable so the others are still viable options.

Thanks for the reply. It's always best to hear from the people who have actually been there, done it. 🙂

Hmmm, I have replied but it is being marked for review despite using no offensive language at all 😕

Essentially, you have lot of time to decide on med and realistically any of those degrees will give you options in industry as long as you do well 🙂 And you're very welcome, it is never a problem at all.

    RMT for this weekend

    Foster
    Terry Clyne Baird
    Haz Caz ADM Sanchez
    Aguero (c) Giroud Kane

    Subs - PVA - Boyd - Wasi

If Baird doesn't start, PVA subs in and he is transferred out for Wisdom/Lescott next week

Same team as me asides Wasi for Wolly

Do you think Baird might burn us with a late cameo off the bench if game is tight?

If your other GK is Myhill, I'm thinking Baird to Naughton. Great 3-way rotation

      What is your OR?

I'm banking that Baird will either start or not play at all. It was like that last GW.

Naughton is good rotation, but I don't think I'll be investing in SWA defence. Safe option to switch Baird for Wisdom/Lescott

I think I will take that gamble too, after 3-0 at home Pulis might change back

Can't afford Wisdom/Lescott but probably the better choices given fixtures

Fortunately captains Caz and moved into 2k this week

With 3 CHE/TOT need 3 playing subs to cover GW27

            Nice rank! Well done!

It definitely won't be 3-0 again, possibility he could switch back. PVA looked dangerous again today so keep that in mind also.

Captain Aguero this week? VC Caz?

Yep can't look past Aguero for Captain but it is a boring move

Another assist for PVA but with Sanchez and Baird he is likely to come in

    Heaton (Pants)
    Terry Bertrand Wisdom (Hutton) (Bruce)
    Silva Sanchez Hazard Sterling ADM
    Kane Ings (Defoe)

I might as well start Bertrand and Sanchez just in case Bertrands appeal is successful or Sanchez recovers, because they'll be auto-subbed in anyway if they don't play.

At the end of the day it's your attack that gets you the big points, even so, your defence is pretty solid. Good backup in mid and def as well

ive always ran with a big forward line and medium defence - its served me well previously - depends on sanchez if hes out maybe downgrade to Carolza then upgrade a def to Terry.?

You def dont win having the same same team as everyone else.

Your "big hitter" score is thus:-

      GK: 0
      DF: 1
      MD: 3.5
      FW: 2.5

So yes it's unbalanced but why the hell not?

Consider Foster/Pants or the Foster/Myhill combo over Krul.

Wait until next week for Bellerin... doubt there will be CS points in the NLD.

A man of his means could have that knee operation at any time at worse he would've been out for a few weeks or he could've put it of to the summer. He has really left QPR in the deep end if he had any decency he would've resigned before the January transfer window to give his successor time to weigh up possible transfers.

Heyo, I've got some injury issues, Bertie's red has kind of thrown me.

Right now I've got Bertie out, Pieters injured and Fabregas still yellow flagged.

    1. Any news of Fabs? Really don't want to shift him.

I'm currently on the Bertie dilemma as well. He may well drop tonight and Im considering Clyne but is that just a sideways shift and a waste of a transfer? But back to your question I'd replace Bert and bench Cresswelll.
