Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

Here is a thought. I believe in minimizing the potential number of transfers in your team, especially for, but not limited to, wildcard teams. For example if you put Zouma, Bellerin, Baird and Cazorla in a team, that's 4 potential transfers. (Cazorla because he is probably overperforming right now and because of the Arsenal midfield choices.) Add to that the uncertainty of form/injuries/suspensions and it's just too much of a risk. May be I am just over-thinking this but I think it helps to plan these things so as to minimize problems in the future. What do you guys think about this?

    1. FISSH

its good thinking, I wouldn't go near Zouma, but I have Cazorla and Baird.

If Baird doesn't play this week then its a gamble that didn't pay off

I think it's called common sense to not bring in players that don't play.

But yes, you are right. The plan should always be to bring in players you don't need to remove the week after.

But I was seeing a lot of RMWCTs with Zouma, Bellerin and Baird and just though I'd share this.

I agree about the principle but not the personnel.

What you said about Cazorla applies much more to Sanchez who is actually injured. Cazorla is currently the only AM at Arsenal that is 100% match fit. I replaced Sanchez with Cazorla last week on wildcard for exactly this reason.

Zouuma you have to use your judgement about but if you know Mourinho you'll know it's likely he'll get a good run now. The word at Chelsea is that Cahill probably leaves in the summer.

Bellerin is the same case but Wenger is more prone to dithering than Jose. He's quite likely to alternate Hector with Chambers.

As for Baird, if you want a WBA defender get a proper one. Or Foster.

Agree with Zouma, Bellerina and Baird. In case of Cazorla, it's not just whether he is nailed or not but which position he will play in, if he can keep this super form going and if Sanchez*/Wally/Ozil could get better returns than him. May be I'm a little biased because I am still holding on to Sanchez.

It's a tough one. Cahill has age on his side where terry doesn't so bringing Cahill back for a few games when fixtures are easier might be the best motivational tool. At some point he'll have to play Cahill and zouma unless they're going to sign another world class centre back.

I agree he picks the same team not just the back 4 but he usually makes 1-2 small changes like azpi and Luiz. Cahill and Zouma have also rotated during cup games.

But saying that Zouma looks like a beast so I think he will play PSG and the Cup final so if there is any rotation its probably v the likes of Villa.

I Agree Zouma is a good choice for his price if he doesn't play he's not costing too much on the bench although Jose's tendency to throw on a defender to see out tight games might be a problem.

My dilemma is I would need to replace Terry with Zouma which I think is too risky at the moment with him only just getting in the side. Other than that I would have already put him in.

I wouldn't pick Zouma for FPL over Terry.

But I would certainly pick him over Wisdom, O'Shea, Cisshoko, Coloccini or other defenders in the same price range.

Personally think Zouma is a perfect WC pick. Just cover with decent defs elsewhere. As you say, he's better than any 5.5 or below defs at the moment.

Chelsea have 8 days rest after Everton and another 8 days rest before the C1C Final. The schedule doesn't really start to get intense till March. That was the benefit of going out of the FA Cup.

I think Zouma will get home games and Cahill away.

Which only goes to show that you have no understanding of how Mourinho works whatsoever.

A tad overly critical. I don't think anyone really knows what goes on in his head. I am entitled to an opinion and he has Zouma has played the last 2 home games. He is young but talented and if you remember we corresponded about my opinion Zouma will start getting gametime due to Cahil's form.

Clichy is very irritating to own with the constant Kolarov shadow - looks good otherwise.

You mean you don´t find amusing ´Arry´s reasons to quit his job? Or Sánchez being injured one minute and fit in the next one?

I would go as far as to say fantasy football made the Premier League 5.3 time more enjoyable. I think Fantasy Cricket could maybe cause me to enjoy cricket.... actually no probably not Cricket sucks.

    Hello,

    Here is my back line.

    De Gea (Hammer)

Terry van Aanholt Clyne (Fonte Jones)

Should I keep it like this or I can double up on either MUN or SOU?

Kompany is the most nailed. But I wouldn't get a city defender. If you are set on City def, then go for Kompany.

Aguero owned by 60% of the top 10k last week. Will be more this week. He doesn't feel like much of a differential anymore.
