Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

just noticed that spurs double week Arsenal (qpr) Man City (LEICESTER) Liverpool (BURNLEY) all have great fixtures and Chelsea away to West Ham. Man U at Newcastle.
How the hell to fit Eriksen in?

Just use a midfield spot on him. He's worth it. Nailed on, good value

If you put aside your negative thoughts about going 3-5-2, how would you describe this wildcard team in terms of quality?

    Foster (Myhill)

    Terry - Clyne - Bellerin - PVA - Naughton

    Sanchez - Silva - Cazorla - Hazard - Eriksen

    Aguero - Kane - (Ayoze)

Agreed, nice team. But I wouldn't have an injured player in my wildcard and dumped Sanchez for that reason last week. If it were me I'd prefer Ozil to Sanchez allowing Bellerin to be upgraded to Koscielny who is long term much more secure I'd have thought.

I think things hang on Kane and Austin a bit. If I have one of them for the season money may be the least important it's been for a while.

If I go back to £30m+ on forwards though, I will be desperate for that £0.5m off the GKs.

The only thing I do not like is the un-benchable-ness of the forward line. You don't really want to throw Austin on the bench all the time.

It's conventional, but I would downgrade Austin and upgrade Coloccini

        Ok. How about

Well, I was talking more along the lines of what I suggested higher up - downgrading him to a bench warmer (Ayoze, or even dirt cheap like Zamora)

Unless you're feeling confident in Newc, I'd ditch one of Colo/Krul. Burnley defence might be worth a look as when it gets down to business time I can see them grounding out a couple of home clean sheets against teams around them.

Other than that it looks solid.

I got Moses to cover him for precisely this reason, but I didn't imagine him missing two games. If he does in fact miss the NLD it will have just been a massive error...especially as it then puts his involvement in the Leicester game in question not to mention more price drops. Really don't know how to deal with it.

On my WC backline, am diddling for the 3rd spot and it's a fierce contest between Jones/Kompany/Moreno. Anyone care to chip in? Looking at this backline right now, may even opt for Zouma instead of Terry but I've bought at 6.3 and I would ideally have his goal threat over Zoumas's for the DGW.

What are your thoughts on City defense mate?

              Flair recognizes flair 🙂

I don't rate City defense...but Kompany could be a fun one.

But you haven't taken into account that we've looked weak defensively since we lost Schneiderlin and Wanyama to injury. Seems unlikely that the absence of our DMs coinciding with our defensive frailty was mere coincidence. Those two are back this week AND our fixtures are good. So your logic really does leave a lot to be desired.

I'm aware Lucy, yes the logic isn't up-to-par, but nevertheless I'm also looking at this from an ownership standpoint. You guys will inevitably prosper with those two back for sure

There could be some decent ground to gain with another defender from anyone of Pool/City/United, all trustworthy currently and City I expect will regain defensive solidty with YYT back and this kind run to boot.

Costas ownership still at 39% I understand a few dead teams but still that seems a lot

fantasyfootballfix actually go through a huge 20K (I think) sample of teams and see who hasn't Xferred in the last month so I'd say their number would be pretty accurate

39% is 'live' squads actually. The figure for all squads is 45% according to FFF. And 69 of the top 1000 still have him.

I guess Burnley (h) in GW 26 is a big attraction, hard to bring him in for that when he has a blank in GW 27 unless you keep him and bench him for the next 2 games. He'll certainly be a big differential captain that week.

Thanks for that. I'm not sure I get holding a player if he's out for 3 games when someone like Giroud has 3 nice fixture and could rack up 20 - 30 points in this time and gain value when Costa dropping.

I'd like it if there was a Monday morning "Name that Clown" post, where the five worst pieces of Saturday morning advice are collected, and we vote on the winner. 🙂

      Evening gentlemen and gentleladies.

      My team for this week:

      Panti
      Fonte - Clyne - Wisdom
      Cesc - Haz - ADM - (C)azorla
      Berahino - Kun(VC) - Kane

      (Foster - Boyd - Hutton - Bertrand)
      1FT, 3.2 in the bank.

      A) Am I good to save the FT for next week and just bench Bertie for one week?
      REASONING:
Nobody's fixture is screaming out as essential this week for me defensively except for City and I'm not sure if I'll need the funds next week so I'm thinking of waiting..

      B) Is my team set up correctly in your opinion? Am I mad for going with Cazorla over Kun for (C)?
      REASONING:
Just feel that Kun hasn't hit any form yet and Cazorla is in the form of his life with the NLD a typically high scoring fixture. But it's still Kun vs Caz so it feels odd going with the latter.

        B) No. Yes. Aguero doesn't need to be in form against Hull and Cazorla won't be getting 3rd penalty in a row.

No fear of anyone else getting in on the act instead of Kun even if they win comfortably 3-0?
True, he won't, but he might get 2 assists and baps in a 4-3 😉

I know I'm being crazy, I just love Santi as a (C) choice after last week..

        B) Kun has to be captain

Who you callin' a gentlelady bub?

The FT will have to be used at some point to take the Birdman out, better do it now and not suffer the TV loss, you may be looking at a massive exodus form him and a .4m net loss the next you have an FT.

Everyone and their dog, plus dead cat, will have Aguero (c) fwiw, good luck though

A - I think you can get away with it, could easily get 3 clean sheets with that backline

B - Kun for me, Hazard could be worth a gander as well...

        hey there teammate.

same boat - 1 FT, 3.2 itb :ol:

So you have 3 SOT defender 😯

A - nope I'd sell especially you already got 2 Saints there.

B - pretty mad. Agree with you regarding Kun and Caz. But NLD can be either 5-4 or 1-0. For that reason I'm going Haz (c) ahead of 'em. Come join me 😀

Hey Nabil 🙂 haha it's the Orange tactics showing through! 😉

A - He's definitely out, I'm just not sure for who yet, so I'm just delaying until I have more to go on.. Or would you just go for Bellerin/PvA now?

B - I don't trust Haz away from home, even at Villa, could be a genius shout though!
I think I'll play it safe with Kun and stop trying to be smart 😛

I think PVA is your best shot.. Clichy got Kolarov lurking this week and possibly not the week to get Belle in.

Come on, Haz the flat track bully will run riot this week, and still no Costa too. I fear Hull will do a Stoke at the Etihad. You have been warned 😉

So if you were I, Bertrand -> PvA tonight and Hazard captain...

Cheers lads 🙂 Going to wait until next week jsut so I can see what I need to do with all of that money, I'd have over 4 and a half million in the bank to play with if I downgrade to Bellerin so price changes aren't that big a deal at the moment for me.

Definitely putting the (C) back on Kun. We're all together now lads! 😉

Concurred. Drogba is still struggling with an ankle injury and isn't 100%. And Remy did well against City. He deserves a run of games and I think he will get them.

        hello 🙂 Lurker alert.

Had to walk away from computer as I cannot find the right combo for my 3rd defender. 5th midfielder and spare striker spot 🙁

I asked about Austin > Remy yesterday and it was shot down in flames as an idea.
I think they were right sadly as it is just another transfer and he may share pitch time with Drogba too.
