Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Huth

Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

    Who to start?
    Panti (swa) or foster (bur)
    Pva (swa) or Baird(bur)

Baird likely won't start anyway but even more unlikely come off the bench.

Same problem for me, Panti has been doing well but Foster plays Burnley, tough one!

Worked nicely last week. Tough one especially as I have Boyd as an option if sanchez doesn't olay either.

    What do I do?

    Foster/Panti
    PvA/Wisdom/Terry/Wasil/Bertrand
    Sanchez/Downing/Hazard/ADM/Albrighton
    Giroud/Aguero/Kane

1 FT. 2.6 ITB. Which option is better?

    A) Downing + Berty -----> Silva + 5.1 (-4)
    B) Downing -----------------> Sterling

          Haha.

I see your point, but you'd still expect them to score in most, if not all of them.

Liverpool playing amazingly and Sterling himself in good form.

I've never rated Silva as an FPL option. I had him when City were using the false 9 system, which suited him, and he was in good form then. With a recognised striker, I feel as though he is never a consistent FPL option (just look at earlier in the season). With two (even one) striker there is less space for him to weave his magic in the box, and he reverts back to that 'assist the assister' type player.

Certainly not in better form than Sterling.

That's what I'm trying to figure out, especially with this Zouma cat in the fold now and lookin' really solid. I'm gonna wait a bit on it and see if I can't determine whether Zouma will be starting now or if Cahill will be reinserted. I've been burned before jumping on a wagon with a "new" player who looks good and is cheap, etc.

Repost as promised from earlier today.

My thinking on Sanchez is this.

    1. If I sell, I will buy him back the moment he starts a game.
    2. He could be out for weeks or he could start this Saturday. We do not know.
    3. We can assume Wenger won't give anything away to Spurs in pressers before the game.
    4. It's Wednesday and he has not begun to train.
    5. GW 24 and 25 will take place and finish less than a week from today.

The probable scenario is therefore that he may miss two games and be back after. Again, he could be out for weeks or he could start this Saturday. We do not know. Hence I take the likelier middle scenario.

    If so,

    1. You may lose 0.2-0.5 TV holding him, more importantly,
    2. you have 11.3 m rotting on bench instead of a 4.3. A 7m difference is like fielding Hazard + Aguero over Tadic + Lukkaku (roughly) for two weeks. Imagine the points loss.

Since emphasis must be points over TV. I sold. I got 11 for him. If he drops say 0.2 to 11.1 it will cost me 0.1 more to get him back. Hopefully, the upgrades I sold him for may rise to make up the 0.1.

    1. The Enlightener
      • 10 Years

I pretty much feel the same way. Plus, if you swap him out for say, someone like Silva or Cazorla, you have money left over to invest elsewhere. For example, if I swap Sanchez for Silva right now, that together with what I have in the bank would also allow me to drop Chester and pick up Ivanovic. Seems a no brainer, especially considering that Arsenal now have Walcott and Ozil back. I mean, Sanchez is great, but there is going to be a lot of competition for points and starts in that midfield.

Love Ozil. When you see his throughballs and assists against AVL you will realise why the likes of Silva and ADM are overpriced in comparison. I still feel we have to wait to see his game time situation. I have Bell, Caz, Gru, not sure who I'll drop for him. 3 ARS attackers may be too loaded.

I think his game time is pretty certain if he keeps the attitude he has at the moment. He really is a good player (not that everyone doesn't already know that) and he really does seem to be fairly priced. Maybe he is finally starting to settle in at Arsenal....it's been an up and down ride for the boy since his arrival to the London outfit.

      5. well if he's back then gw25 is no longer a question

      if so ,
      1. still better than getting him for like 11.2m ?
      2. spurs game might not be as high score as expected , bench (e.g walters) could do as good
      3. if you are getting him back again it takes 2 ft (or hit) in the process

My analysis is based on probability assessment of the likeliest scenario. If you have information or an assessment that he may be back then it would be silly to sell if you bought him for 10.4.

So far 0.2. For comparables of high ownership players

        Costa 11.2 to 10.9 - two weeks

        Aguero 12-9 to 12.3 - four weeks

        ADM 10.2 to 9.6 - 3 weeks

        Fabregas 9.8 to 9.5 - 2 weeks (including suspension).

Most likely to lose their spot or bebrotated if all fit out of:

    Wally
    Caz
    Ozil
    Rambo
    Coquelin
    Sanchez
    Flamini

    I'd still say ozil/Caz/wally/coq

      in order, most likely first:

      Flam
      caz
      rambo
      wally
      coq
      ozil
      sanchez

          • 10 Years

our best front 6 when fully fit:

          ---------Giroud
          Sanchez Ozil Wally
          -----Rambo Coq

If we play a 4-1-4-1 Rambo would probably move forward alongside Ozil, though that could become Caz, which is why I then have Rambo 3rd.

Can you afford to have Chelsea players who are not more or less certain of starts? If you are planning on keeping them over the blank they need to be cert of playing both games in the DGW. Neither of these are

Yes, Zomuma should be a better pick since neither of them are nailed and Zouma is cheaper. If anything, watching Zouma play makes me think he could be more nailed than Azpi. Similar to the Varane/Pepe situation at Real Madrid.

    Foster (Panti)
    Zouma Clyne Bellerin (PVA Hutton)
    Sanchez Hazard Sterling Eriksen Walcott
    Aguero Gayle Kane

I'm saving the money to potentially upgrade a defender or drop Sanchez to upgrade Gayle to Sturridge... So many options! Feedback welcome...

This is going to take some collective brainpower, but I love the DZ and trust you implicitly. 🙂
My "Pick and Stick" team is fixed for the rest of the season after I make two transfers this week. Zero cash to spend.
    Foster Hamer
Terry Coloccini Wisdom Curtis Davies Debuchy
    Fabregas Ramsey Mata* Siggy Henderson
    Rooney* Costa Naismith
The two players I want to get rid of (personal opinion) are asterisked.
    So I was thinking
    A) Rooney to Kane and Mata to Sanchez.
    B) Rooney to Aguero and Mata to Walters.
I really need nailed on players and these seem like my best options, but I'm probably wrong.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
