Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 25

We take a final glance back at the previous round of fixtures this morning, assessing the impact of Arsenal’s German playmaker, the upturn in form at the Etihad and brace ourselves for the return of a number of key Fantasy assets in time for Gameweek 26.

The Player

Mesut Ozil’s contribution to Arsenal’s labored 2-1 win over Leicester was far from spectacular. The German playmaker could not rival the likes of Chris Smalling and even Samir Nasri in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) output in the Gameweek but, nonetheless, his 11-point return promoted him in our thinking and suddenly forced us to reassess our view of the Gunners’ midfield assets.

Ozil is competing in a crowded market, not just as a heavy-hitting midfield option but also within his club – Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott arguably have the weaponry to ensure that the German is kept in the shade as an option.

Since Ozil’s return to fitness within the Arsenal lineup, however, that trio have failed to keep him in the shade. A pair of goals, three assists and six FPL bonus have seen Ozil bloom to the level we expected on his arrival at the Emirates as a £42 million acquisition.

Cazorla’s form has been reduced to a simmer, while Sanchez’ failure to return on the Gameweek armband and ongoing niggles will have pushed some to consider using Ozil to double their Arsenal midfield cover.

Indeed, the Sanchez to Ozil swap is perhaps a step too far given the Chilean’s level of output to this point. Nonetheless, Ozil is now a credible target.

While he may have to bide his time to claim the “number 10” role he so obviously covets, Ozil’s contribution from the Arsenal left has been convincing. The statistics show that, while he’s seen less of the ball, his impact in the final third and presence in the opposition’s box has improved: the end product has followed.

Ozil’s modest 4% FPL ownership is on the rise but still a factor and with fixtures and form aligning, along with Daniel Sturridge he appears to be the obvious target for those seeking a double-figure differential.

The Team

Fantasy managers need Manchester City to revive themselves as a source of potential points and, above all, keep the title race alive. Their 4-1 victory at Britannia gave us hope they could achieve both.

Significantly, Sergio Aguero woke from his slumber in time to see off the claims for Diego Costa to make an immediate return to our squads. The Argentine’s twin strikes provide immediate relief following five appearances without a goal and, while his reputation as a nailed-on FPL captain may have been dented, Aguero’s credentials as a prime asset are back on the table.

We now need City to kick-on. Clean sheets would be a handy addition to the points they offer, although given Manuel Pellegrini’s penchant for attacking football, that might be a stretch too far. Instead we’ll now be anticipating Aguero to return to his consistent best, with David Silva, Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure progressing to become genuine contenders for spots in our midfield.

Then there’s Wilfried Bony…

The Talking Point

Bony’s return, along with Toure, from the African Cup of Nations is timed to coincide with the availability of both Diego Costa and Gylfi Sigurdsson – two players who, arguably, demand places in our team of the season so far.

Sigurdsson and Costa arrive back with caveats surrounding form and temperament respectively, although few can argue that they deserve consideration with their FPL values dropping to more manageable levels.

Costa is already topping the transfers in rankings with Chelsea’s struggle to break down a resilient Everton highlighting his importance to their cause. If he can stave off further suspensions and injury, Costa ‘s present ownership level of 36% will inevitably continue to soar beyond that of Aguero, who is currently found in 28% of squads.

Bony’s arrival could be a factor in that. From a Fantasy perspective, we’re torn on the perfect scenario, here.

Priced at just 8.2 in the FPL, the Ivorian has the potential to provide us with a key differential in the mid-price bracket. Should that materialise, however, he’ll likely draw points from Aguero and limit his output.

If Pellegrini turns to Bony to work in tandem with Aguero for the run-in, the relationship and distribution of goals amongst that pair could be pivotal to our Fantasy seasons. Our ability to monitor that development and plan transfer and captaincy strategies accordingly will be key.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

They looked so much better earlier in the season with Sakho and Valencia up top

As a West Ham fan im hopeful we can regain the pace in attack we had at the start of the season. Carroll is a great player to have in your arsenal, but he slows us down and also means Nolan gets more gametime.

I'd like to see Sakho/Valencia with downing behind, noble kouyate and song midfield with Amalfitano as an impact sub. This excites me even writing this teamsheet.

Totally, i hate the war Westham play with Carroll, Its the tall strikers curse that England had when we played crouch. forces the long ball, crossing game just for the benefit of a header by the big fella. It should mean they have a more direct and varied attack now and gets the mids involved a lot more.

Another case of English bias... even when those guys were delivering up top, people were still talking about 'when Carroll comes back', as if he'd ever had a scoring run like Sakho's or the combined strength, pace, and awareness of Valencia.

Crazy how a player that needs the ball literally lumped up to him, or relies so heavily on another human being (Nolan), to make him look good has any sort of reputation at all.

    Decisions. Decisions.
What's the best move here kids?

Oscar and Yoshida seem to be the prime suspects but I can get at least one more GW out of Yoshida (assuming Toby will take his place) and shipping out Oscar before Burnley is probably asking for trouble.

Any other ideas? Need to use one of my FT.

    Panti | Krul
    Fonte | Koscielny | Haidara | Wollscheid | Yoshida
    ADM | Hazard | Oscar | Sanchez | Moses
    Aguero | Giroud | Kane

Yeah, Yoshida is the obvious candidate for the chop but i just don't see the point in even worrying for now. You will know so much more this time next week, why both speculating?

Plus there are so many games to go between now and then, all this could just be a waste of time if say Hazard/Oscar gets a bad injury against PSG

Haidara. Fancy his chances of holding onto that spot (Dummett likelier to come in for Williamson), Newcastle are definitely the better side (better chance of CS in general), and a nice bit of attacking threat. Bruce is also under risk when Hull switch to four at the back. Both carry a risk, though.

Most of us predict that they will not finish in top 4,that will need a loss of form, and they are not even scoring.

Whilst Jordan Ibe is being mentioned, this is utterly ridiculous. This was his first goal as a 15 year old playing for Wycome...and also his first yellow card when he ran over to give his mum a hug after scoring.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au3o_tboBJQ

Can anybody tell me what that yellow card actually achieved...some times this game is an ass...

The referee was just doing his job. Running into the crowd to celebrate is against the rules for legitimate reasons. You can't expect exceptions.

Of course you can make exceptions..The thing is they don't want to make exceptions...It's a game of football and nothing more, he's hardly inciting a riot...

Any advice on how I could improve my team guys? Have been out of the loop over the last few GWs. Cheers

    Pantilimon

    Clyne, Terry, Bellerin

    Cazorla, Hazard, Sterling, Di Maria

    Kane (c), Giroud, Aguero (vc)

    Subs: Myhill, Wisdom, Boyd, Wasilewski

would be concerned about wasil, lost his place last game, and wisdom who has also lost his place.

Very similar to my team - 12/15 are the same, in fact.

(You have Myhill, Cazorla, Sterling - I have Krul, Sanchez, Silva).

With blanks for Kane, Hazard and Terry in GW27 coming up, I think that Wisdom and Wasilewski are going to have to go, though not necessarily this week, as Clyne/Terry/Bellerin isn't a bad defence on paper.

However, you've also got Sterling's injury to worry about as well, so wait for news on that before you do anything else. Depending on what we hear on that, you might want to transfer him out, or swap Wisdom to someone you can play this week and next (i.e. Wollscheid), benching Sterling and going 4-3-3.

    Sooooooooooo
Everyone seems worried about fielding 11 on GW27. I think 10 is fine.
So bring in Costa for this week, will have Hazard Terry Costa on the bench and have to leave Kane in, will be a 4-4-2. After that it's Walcott > Spurs mid. Who's with me?

    Foster
Fonte PVA replacement for Wasil most likely Hadira
    Sanchez Walcott Mane Boyd
    Aguero Kane

Looks fine. You can also take a hit for taking out Baird and getting a defender with couple of good fixtures, should cover those points along with improving bench

If I get Costa this week and then replace Wasil with Haidara I am 0ITB

No other 3.9 options to replace Baird methinks

mmm are you sure? Would love Costa for this GW and then onwards after that. If Chelsea don't have a DGW in 28 then it could be 31, not too far away

I don't see fielding 9 as suicide. Yes it IS a risk. But with a good captain choice, could still be satisfactory

Or I may just wildcard before 28 and use my 2 transfers before 27 to prepare the team for a stormer in THAT week! AHA!

every player is an opportunity , speaking of which Heaton(with his penalty save) and Walters come into my mind which literally give me more than 10 points advantage in a single gw..I wouldn't waste a transfer on him when a blank is coming , that too for a striker spot..perhaps high risk high reward for you though..

the only additional game is spurs-qpr. Not sure I want more than 2 spurs, tbh, looking at their points lately. So that's achievable pretty easily with a FT.
