Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope Returns

After a brief hiatus, our Suspension Tightrope article returns this evening as we give you a heads-up on those players who are teetering dangerously close to a domestic ban. At present, there are five protagonists – Gareth Barry, Jack Colback, Phil Bardsley, Lee Cattermole and Neil Taylor who need just one more yellow card before facing a stint on the sidelines. It’s worth noting that the 10-yellow Tightrope will now run until April 12 (inclusive), which currently takes in all of Gameweek 32.

Ironically, Barry is unavailable for Gameweek 27 after receiving his marching orders against Chelsea in the previous round of fixtures. The midfielder earned two yellows in the narrow loss at Stamford Bridge and now sits out this weekend’s home encounter against Leicester.

Arguably, Cattermole’s current knee injury has prevented him from becoming the first player to accrue ten cautions. The Sunderland midfielder earned nine yellows by Gameweek 19 but has remained in the treatment room since, allowing him to steer clear of another ban. Cattermole is expected to imminently return to training, though, and it seems only a matter of time before he incurs the referee’s wrath again.

Further down, there are ten players sitting just two bookings away from an automatic ban. Undoubtedly, the main names here are Chelsea duo Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, though the likes of Villa’s cut-price defender Alan Hutton and Southampton frontman Graziano Pelle are both owned by 11% and 15% of FPL managers respectively.

Barry is one of four players suspended for this week’s fixtures. Stoke’s Geoff Cameron misses the trip to Villa after his FA Cup dismissal at Blackburn for denying a goal scoring opportunity. Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand serves the last of a three-match ban received for serious foul play in the Gameweek 23 loss to Swansea – he’s dropped from 5.9 to 5.7 in FPL as a result. West Ham’s Morgan Amalfitano is set to serve the first of a three-match ban after being dismissed for violent conduct during Saturday’s 4-0 cup thrashing at the hands of West Brom.

In terms of returning players, Diego Costa and Gylfi Sigurdsson are both back in contention after serving three-match bans. Despite having a blank Gameweek 27 around the corner, the Chelsea striker has been snapped up by over 117,000 FPL managers – more than twice any other player – ahead of the weekend visit of Burnley.

Re-post from Jonty's hot-topic of the blank coming up, I think this could be a genuine option for those looking to opt for a riskier ploy and it could be a good differential for Gw27. This may be a luxury many can't afford though because of highly owned players out-of-favor in their own teams and injuries to boot. Nevertheless, this opportunity could be ripe for those on the chase or looking to sneak in a differential for what looks like a probable low-scoring GW up ahead. This could also be a daft play fwiw 😳

Since most of us will be entering the DGW with Hazard, Chelsea defense, Costa/?, Kane, Eriksen and (?).........................................................................
Maybe Gw27 is where the points will be made. Many will be rolling out a less than ideal 442 with a few iffy players and fixtures to boot. If one were to take out a Hazard, or Chelsea defender for Gw27 and swap them for two players with great fixtures on that GW, it could make way for some potential differential.

    DDG(23.0%)
    Clyne(33.7%) | Ivanovic(24.9%) | Clichy(15.9%)
    Eriksen(23.7%) | Fàbregas(34.2%) | Hazard(39.1%) | Sterling(30.4%) | Downing(27.8%)
    Kane(43.5%) | Pellè(15.4%)

    Myhill(12.5%), Bruce(10.4%) Wisdom(21.7%) Zamora(3.4%)

That is the overall template within FPL including dead teams, I see 5 players there with blanks coming up (6 if you include Zamora, albeit not to highly owned). The Gw27 fixtures for the remaining top teams aren't the best either, LIV vs mci, and ARS vs eve, so the only remaining top teams to play are both Southampton(wba) and ManUnited(SUN). From an attacking perspective, both of these teams have one of the best fixtures on that GW, with Newcastle(AVL), West Ham(CPL), Stoke(HUL), also topping the ticker overall as well.

So if you're the adventurous type and could do with an old fashioned chasing with a high risk move up your sleeve, this may be a good time to play your cards (not WC obviously). From those team listed I can see why two of those listed may sway people away after this weekend's performances (Hammers 0-4 loss o West Brom, and Stoke's 1-4 loss to Blackburn). So this gives us these potential short term punts for the GW if you take out a Chelsea or Spurs player before their blanks,

These are just my personal potential picks, go with your own judgment of course
Newcastle - Cisse, Cabella and Janmaat/Haidara

West Ham - Downing, Sakho and Cresswell

Stoke - Moses, Crouch/Diouf, and Wollschied/Pieters if fit

Man United - Defense, and any of their attackers can be good options, many have personal opinions of that side's best attack so I'll refrain from listing them

Southampton-Many already have a Saints defender, but the offense isn't as highly owned overall and in the top10k so perhaps punting on any of the attackers is a good option(long term also IMO)

tl"dr .......So in summary, this Gw27 has all the makings of a low scoring GW as many top teams are either not playing or have tough fixtures, as well as many reverting to defensive formations and playing their Boyds, Zamora's and what-have-you's. You may be able to accumulate 2 FT's and use at least one to take out one of your blank players and rejuvenate the forward/defensive line with any of those teams listed (other teams good options as well). Your healthy 343/352 may reap it's rewards then as you battle it out vs the 442's or even 532's. You may well have to opt for a hit or two come the week after though, so you will likely lose value on the players you took out, but it may just be worth it if your players can recuperate the hits for the blank. Points is the name of the game now, not value.

Sidenote - This move may prove even kinder to those who opted for Hazard, Kane, and Eriksen late as well, IF value is of concern to you.

I really don't trust Southampton going forward. Everytime I watch them Its just Mane trying to do something and Pelle being Pelle i.e. boarder line Torres.

I don't think i'll ever trust the Manchester united defence. Amazing keeper yet clean sheets are too rare.

Janmaat is a really good shout - same number of assists as Hazard as somebody else pointed out!

Good points Skeanos, I can see why the Saints offense isn't as appealing as other teams. They might not be scoring a plethora of goals like other top attacking teams, but they are still getting the big chances and good opportunities to score. Now with Victor and Morgan back, their offense and midfield respectively has really come into full form and it's shown in-game. I'd reconsider investment in their midfield tbh, the team is playing well and were unlucky not to score more vs Hammers tbh.

(LIV, wba, CRY) coming up, as I said in the OP, good short term punts and long term as well, IMO.

Yes, sans United defense is understandable, no real appeal there. Prone to individual errors at the back as well.

Janmaat really is a great option and that fixture looks ripe for attacking returns, also to keep in mind Cisse being back boosts their offensive appeal as well. Better opportunities to finish Jamaat's crosses in the box as he's one of the standout aerial threat in the team

Really? Why is that? Surely Cisse has proved he's the best attacking option on that side, no? His goals per minute has been ridiculous so far and his impact coming off the bench has also won them games single-handedly.

It's close but I see a much better prospect. Obviously Cisse has more physical tools but Ayoze has better movement off the ball, better decision making, and has been getting more minutes.

Maybe, good luck with him in any case man, hope he bodes you well 😮
Movement off the ball aside though, Cisse is the team's goal scorer, Carver himself has been ecstatic for his main threat to come back in the team and for good reason.

Nevertheless, Ayoze is worth a punt as well for sure

I have four blankers and thinking of just fielding ten players in gw27. I could swap Eriksen for say Downing or Mane or someone and then swap back a week later but what is the point?

Thats two transfers in two weeks for the same position. Transfers are valuable to me now. Got Jones. Wisdom and Defoe to sort out as well.

Good luck to anyone taking a punt though.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Yeah Rozzo, I can see why this tactic may not be beneficial to you. This definitely is a luxury move fwiw, but having a (if you may) pivot slot for a mid or forward could be a wise option going forward and starting now even. Maximising that 3rd/4th slot for the midfield and forwards respectively and switching according to fixture strength and form.

Overall though yes, it's very risky if the player(s) you got in blank and want to subsequently take them out the week after for a hit. Out of those options I listed, a team with better fixtures long term and a decent Gw27 fixture could be more logical. Swansea, Saints, Sunderland, West Brom, and Stoke all have good runs for the next 6.

So anyone of Siggy, Mane, AJ, Ideye, and Moses/Diouf could be good bets for the 3rd and 4th slots in the midfield and forwards if you don't want to take a hit for them the next week and would rather keep them long term. Both are solid strategies, fwiw

      Excellent post,
Points gained could be lost in hits the following week and making some players harder to get back in eg Hazzard if you got him in.
Brilliant read and I see nothing wrong with a punt if your rank warrants it,
      Thanks Zasa.

        • 9 Years

Thanks for the kind words HVT, and yes the hit may prove detrimental if your player blanks for sure. Just replied to Rozzo above on teams with decent fixtures on Gw27 and long term if you don't feel comfortable taking hits to have 5/6 DGWers. Swansea, Stoke, Saints and perhaps West Brom all have good runs in the next 6 and have exceptional Gw27 fixtures to boot a well.
West Brom are at home to Saints Gw27 fwiw, not optimal, but some may punt Ideye

Cheers mate, I hope it works out, any opportunity has to be taken advantage of for those like me in the low ranks 😉

The problem is the fixtures remaining in GW 27 aren't that attractive.

West Ham home to Palace looks the best of them but West Ham don't have great fixtures in GW 28 and 29 and you don't really want a West Ham player stuck in your team - at least I don't. Not till GW 30. Valencia or Sakho could be decent 1 week punts but that means using 2 FTs and I'd only do that for someone I would captain.

United also have an attractive GW 27 fixture and Rooney would tempt me if he was playing as a forward. But who knows what is in van Bile's mind.

I short, there are a number of OK options including Cisse, Gomis, Sigurdsson and Crouch. But all very much 1 week punts. Like most others I don't have the FTs to waste and I don't see any of these being worth hits. I'll field a decent team in GW 27 because I have planned for it and it's more important to have 2 FTs saved for GW 28 when I will bring in Eriksen and Vertonghen assuming no Chelsea-Leicester DGW.

      1. Zasa
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Solid points there Ruth, and in regards to the the short term punts, I posted above twice responding to that dilemma.

Yes, long term West Ham certainly don't offer much. The real reward may lie on a captainable player for Gw27 and ideally have good fixtures afterwards. With that in mind, yes (a lot depends on United's form come next GW), but Rooney/Falcao/RvP could be decent and the former and latter being highly capable of producing double digit hauls fwiw.

I think Cisse is a standout option for sure Ruth, Newcastle are up there with the best attacking fixtures in the next five following Gw26 (AVL, MUN, eve, ARS, sun). Three home games in 5 is not too shabby and United's fixture could be quite interesting offensively for sure.

Yes, the risk of the player you're getting in and subsequently taking out for a hit is big, nevertheless the ceiling is relatively high that GW and even higher if your player will be captained. This is a luxury move like you said for sure though, but is definitely an alternative to what most are planning IMO and could even be in tandem.

I for one, may ditch Kane and get him back for the DGW. Got him at 5.7 and have sufficient money ITB to get him back with ease for a hit, Hazard as well.
