The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 26

Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four to six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours. Arsenal’s midfield play a major part in our thinking, whilst the suspension-free Diego Costa and Gylfi Sigurdsson are back in the mix after completing three-match bans.

The Defence

West Brom’s Ben Foster rises to the top of the keeper standings. The Baggies have collected three clean sheets in five under Tony Pulis and now face Sunderland, Villa, Stoke and QPR in the next six to maintain their recent resilience. With Andre Wisdom and Chris Baird dropping out of the starting XI in recent weeks, there are fewer clear-cut budget options in the back-four at the Hawthorns.

Sunderland’s Costel Pantilimon drops to second in the keepers bracket, with team-mate Patrick van Aanholt, at 4.3, offering a cheaper route into the Black Cats’ backline. Gus Poyet’s side have three kind home fixtures (WBA, AVL, NEW) and a trip to Hull in the upcoming six and remain in the frame, despite their poor last couple of displays.

Arsenal’s David Ospina settles in third. The South American now looks cemented as Arsene Wenger’s preferred stopper and, at 4.8, has upcoming clashes against Palace, Everton, QPR, West Ham and Newcastle to profit from. With Hector Bellerin’s goal threat and cheaper price (4.6) as an alternative, though, Ospina’s appeal is somewhat dented.

Both Hugo Lloris and Rob Green climb as a double Gameweek option. According to our fixture ticker, QPR are ranked third for clean sheet potential over the next six – in addition to their pair of home clashes with Arsenal and Spurs in Gameweek 28, the R’s are also up against Hull, Palace, Everton and West Brom. Even if he concedes, the 4.5-priced Green is sure to be kept busy – he’s made more saves than any other keeper so far.

In defence, there’s no real movement near the summit. Branislav Ivanovic keeps his top-three spot behind Bellerin and Van Aanholt, with Nathaniel Clyne sitting in fourth. Chelsea and Southampton have now earned 12 clean sheets apiece, whilst Ivanovic has now served up four sets of attacking returns in his last six appearances.

Joleon Lescott climbs into fifth with a lack of competition for secure starts in the Baggies backline. Over the last four Gameweeks, his goal threat is ranked second for defenders.

Villa’s Alan Hutton moves up slightly due to some kind fixtures. Tim Sherwood opens his tenure at the Midlands club with a promising run (STO, new, WBA, sun, SWA), and at 4.4, Hutton has been a secure pick so far. Given that Hutton is just two yellows short of a suspension, team-mate Ron Vlaar (4.3) could be a safer alternative, though much depends on Sherwood’s tactics as to how we asses the pair.

Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno crashes up the rankings in his wing-back role. Granted, the Reds don’t have the best of fixtures but as we pointed out in this week’s Big Numbers article, his attacking potential has been on the up in recent matches.

Leighton Baines is expected to recover from a slight injury in time for the weekend home clash against Leicester. The left-back produced points in four of his last five before picking up a knee problem, and with the Toffees conceding once in their previous four now, there’s reason for optimism bearing in mind that Baines is also set to face Stoke, Newcastle and QPR in the next five.

Further down, Danny Rose is a somewhat reluctant pick. With a double Gameweek to come, though, his 4.8 price tag, allied with a goal and three assists, makes him our favoured Tottenham backline option.

The Midfield

Alexis Sanchez climbs back to second, although he’s struggling to see off the claims from in-form Mesut Ozil, who ousts Santi Cazorla in our Watchlist as the second choice for those opting to double up on Arsenal assets. Theo Walcott may well be a factor in coming weeks as he progresses – for now, though, his lack of guaranteed starts goes against him.

Sadio Mane and David Silva both hold with strong fixtures. The former has netted in four of his last five starts and squares up to West Brom, Palace and Burnley in the next five – at 6.6, he’s our favoured mid-price option right now. With Yaya Toure back on board for City, it remains to be seen whether Silva will remain quite so high in our thinking – the Ivorian netted four times in his last five appearances before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Raheem Sterling falters due to injury concerns, whilst Christian Eriksen’s stock takes a hit given his forthcoming blank – the Spurs man will climb dramatically for the double Gameweek, though.

Gylfi Sigurdsson returns to contention after serving out his three-match ban. Now down to 6.4, he looks vital to the Swans’ prospects ahead of some mixed fixtures (MUN, bur, tot, LIV, avl, HUL). Stoke’s Jon Walters and Villa’s Carles Gil are both slight injury concerns but offer budget options in the centre of the park with decent form and fixtures to follow.

The Forwards

The top three hold steady, though Olivier Giroud’s stock took a slight dent after he was rotated in the Gameweek 25 home win over Leicester. The Arsenal frontman may well suffer a drop in the coming weeks as Daniel Sturridge and Diego Costa threaten a reshuffle. The Gameweek 27 blank keeps Costa out of the top three, although it’s also worth bearing in mind that he is just two yellows from a two-match ban.

Saido Berahino and Christian Benteke are the big risers. Certainly, the latter is speculative off the back of an anticipated Villa recovery under Tim Sherwood, with those above-mentioned fixtures in mind. Berahino’s seven goals in eight appearances in all competitions under Tony Pulis underlines his flourishing recent displays – at just 5.5, he is on penalties and is cheaper than strike partner Brown Ideye.

Further down, Charlie Austin and Jermain Defoe simmer in the lower ranks as both head into the weekend with injury concerns hanging over them.

Not that I'm expecting any mass transfers of Villa players or anything, but just a heads up.

Sherwood was today hinting at quite a bit of rotation. When he looks to upcoming opposition he said it's like a 'jigsaw' and assessing which particular players, given their strengths, will give us the best opportunity to win - so he's not ruling out rotation rather than a set eleven come what may.

"'You have to leave out a lot of players doing that but that doesn't mean they're finished. You might leave them out for two weeks and they start getting a bit disgruntled but it doesn't mean they're finished. You can bring them back because there might be that time when they need to come back in and do a job.'

Hazard, Courtois, Matic and Fabregas the only players who might make the squads of the top teams.

Second best in both games against Man City in the league, second best against Liverpool in both legs of the CoC.

Costa is a tier 2 striker, Oscar, Ramires, Willian not great, and their defensive players do well in a system, but as individuals not that great, and the full backs offer little on the overlap.

To those commenting that Bayern are a scummy team

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_association_football_transfers

Most expensive footballers ever. Bayern Munich got one in top 50.
Man City paid more for Fernandinho than Bayern have for anyone ever. Thats disgusting.
Real Madrid have 10 of top 50 including 5 of top 8. Thats disgusting.

Bayern have 1 in top 50. Bayern have 5 european cups.
More than Barcelona. More than Man United. Both spend far more.
Bayern have more European Cups than PSG, Man City, Chelsea (overnight rich teams) combined.

Bayern started 5 Germans tonight. More than PSG and Chelsea homegrown players combined.
Chelsea started 2 englishmen. PSG 1 frenchman.

You ask me, Bayern are one of the least scummy big clubs in football.
Do things the right way. Dont buy their success. No on a Real Madrid level.
Dont build a side on foreigners. Not on a PSG level.
    Proper club. Deserve respect.

I guess you can't have it every way, but I look at them the same as Real, just with a more pervasive local reach. They suffocate the clubs below them, while RM has no competition in Spain, they do lose out on the local products more than Bayern

But they have monopoly in their own league, buying from other league is fine but taking the most emerging player every season from Bundesliga is so wrong.

You obviously don't have a clue about German football.

Bayern have at least 3 times the revenues of any other German club, had their stadium effectively built for them by Allianz (one of the 25 richest companies in the world and a longstanding Bayern sponsor) and have long had a policy of dismantling any serious opponents by taking their best players. They did it with Leverkusen in the late 90s (Ballack) and have done it with Dortmund recently (Goetze, Lewandowski). Dortmund tried to dig their heels in over Lewandowski and all that resulted in was losing him to Bayern on a free.

It is an accepted fact of Bundesliga life that if Bayern want a player - especially a German player - they get him. It's the only club with a realistic chance of the CL every season and almost always wins the Bundesliga as well. They can afford wages way above what any other team can offer. In England there are a number of clubs - Chelsea, City, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs to some degree - capable of paying elite wages. Not so in Germany.

Bayern's dominance, based on their huge commercial revenues, is almost total and as a result they are by far the most hated club in Germany outside of Munich.

"Don't buy their success"? That's one of the most ill-informed assertions I have ever heard.

      1. Sánchez

Bayern have built this up over 100 years though. Not an ocernight thing like chelsea and city. Nothing wrong with working hard towards success.

Their stadium may be built by a sponsor, but real madrid had players bought and debts paid by Spain. A country. With taxpayers money. So barca fans bought Real players.

They may be the standout club in Germany, but ina world scale, they dont buy success. Buying success is overnight money or spending more than even top european rivals. Bayern have brought through loads of their own players. Who was the last Englishman Chelsea brought in who kept his place long term? Go back 15-20 years to get the answer.

Where were Chelsea in 1974 when bayern were about to win 3 european cups and feed germany a world cup squad? Big difference in earned money and sugar daddy money.

Nothing wrong with dominating your own league. But its not "understood" they get all germans. Did they get Ozil? Did they get Sammer or Moeller? They pay for germans yea but Man Utd are no different. Rooney, Smalling, Jones, Carrick, Young, Shaw, Ferdinand,. These werent youth system guys. They werepoached away. Same way chelsea bought lampard, glen johnson, joe cole, ashley cole, wright phillips, gary cahill, scott parker. Most of them over night again.

Look, there are a lot of things about this you don't understand, and probably couldn't understand unless you were either German or had lived in Germany for a long time (I was there for 13 years).

First of all, Bavaria doesn't really see itself to be fully part of Germany. It is the wealthiest state by far, has its own political parties and its own state government. The German equivalents of the Conservatives and Labour don't stand in Bavaria. They just have alliances with Bavarian parties that are more or less philosophically similar.

Secondly, Munich is in many ways not part of Bavaria. Administratively it is, of course, but in reality it is like an island of wealth in an already wealthy state in an already wealthy country.

The German market is huge; most of the wealthiest German companies are based in Bavaria; almost all of those have their HQ in Munich. And they all fall over themselves to sponsor Bayern Munich, always have done. Imagine London with only 2 teams: Arsenal and Charlton. That's about the situation in Munich.

The rise of certain clubs to prominence owes a lot to luck. United rose to world fame on the back of the Munich Disaster and a European Cup win at just the time when European games were beginning to be internationally televised. They then had a run of Premier League success at the time when money was starting to pour into the game and PL games were beginning to be televised worldwide. Are United a more deserving club than Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest? No. They just got particularly lucky with their timings.

And the "sugar daddy" in the case of both United and Bayern is commercial sponsorship.

Now let's look at Chelsea. OK, in the 7 seasons before Roman arrived we finished between 3rd and 6th every season and qualified for Europe 6 seasons out of 7. We did this having fought a 10 year fight to save Stamford Bridge from the hands of property developers and the club from ruin. Many people put their hands in their pockets to help. I think that was deserving.

Then Roman came along and wanted to bridge the gap between a 3rd-6th team and a 1st-2nd team. He pumped cash in. Is that non-allowable in some way? United and Arsenal had it easy in those days, they were much wealthier than the rest, could afford the best players and were in a similar situation to Bayern in Germany. Was it unacceptable for that to be challenged?

For some reason people make a distinction based on a "frozen" picture of history. Liverpool, United and Arsenal are the "natural" big clubs in their minds. But in the eyes of a previous generation it might have been Villa, Wolves, Sunderland. It's all relative to time and era.

Chelsea are now one of the only English clubs that have no problems with FFP. Their aim has been to be self-sustaining and they have been working towards it. And now they are. We are spending our own revenues now and making profits. We are no longer reliant on a "sugar daddy" and we haven't been spending Roman's cash since the Torres debacle (which was really the last throw of Abramovich playing fantasy football and the one that finally taught him his lesson). I repeat: we are spending our own revenues now, not Roman's money, and we are making profits.

I am aware this is a long response but I just think you are simplifying things way too much. Bayern are really not as lilywhite and deserving as you believe. And Chelsea are not the obscenity of conspicuous consumption that many would like to make out. As in most things, the truth in both cases (as it is for most clubs) is greyer and nearer the middle.

PS John Terry came through the youth system at Chelsea. And soon you will see some more emerging. We have a fantastic bunch of youngsters right now, probably the best we have had since the 1960s.

            1. Exactly. John Terry. 15 years ago or something like that.

            2. I dont think Chelsea are bad or wrong to spend money at all. I have no issue with it. My issue was the previous pages posts saying Bayern were a terrible club
To me, they're no more terrible than any other big team. But because they arent seen as being cool like Barca or Real, they're seen as baddies while Real and Barca are everyones favourite clubs. I used other clubs to compare as none of them were being called out as scum.

            3. Im not concerned with German politics or how the federal system they have works. I was only looking at how they spend compared to European top clubs. Not German top clubs. And the fact is, they spend far less than the others of their status such as Real or Barca. And it is all their own money.

I get Germans wont like them. But they're no worse than any other powerful club. Idoidnt see anyone calling Chelsea or PSG hateable etc. though. No idea why Bayern are if they are not. Not saying Chelsea are, but no more than Bayern is all Im saying.

            3. Im Scottish. Celtic fan. We buy all the Scottish talent like Bayern. But our success came from a huge fan base. Thats how big clubs are built. Over time. We by comparison though, dont buy success like Bayern do. And Bayern by comparison, dont like Real Madrid do. Thats just a fact.

            4. Yes. Timing is all luck. Thats why I dont have an issue with Man Utd or Chelsea being big clubs. But wjen their fans post that their club is somehow good and Bayern are bad, I'm sorry, but it's typical arrogance that (this is a part you only understand if you're Scottish, Irish, Welsh, German, French, Australian, Indian, Argentinian etc. etc. etc.) is simply how English fans are perceived the world over.

Only the foreigners are ever baddies in English football.

Ah. I didn't have the context of previous posts. I understand what you are getting at now.

And yes, it's true, Barcelona and RM have been repeatedly bailed out and given favourable tax treatment by the Spanish government whilst taxpayers elsewhere in Europe have been bailing out the Spanish government.

Personally I don't like Bayern much. But that stems from 13 years in Germany going to Schalke games (when I couldn't get back to London to see Chelsea). 😉

Worst game Fabregas and Costa have had in a Chelsea shirt. Clearly both were not match fit. Taking off Willian instead of Fabregas is a p*ssy move from Mou...and what was it that Cuadrado tried to do in his first involvement. Lucky draw, I'll take it.
