The Digest – Gameweek 26

We cast an analytical eye over last weekend’s fixtures this afternoon, evaluating the evolution of City’s fleet-footed No. 10, Liverpool’s defensive fortitude on their travels and the blank Gameweek headache.

The Player

David Silva’s brace in Manchester City’s 5-0 humbling of Newcastle city underlined his heightened goal threat this season. This is the first campaign in the Spanish playmaker’s Premier League career that he’s notched more goals (nine) than assists (seven); it’s also already his most profitable season in front of goal, eclipsing the seven strikes he accrued last term.

Among the highest scoring midfielders in the league this season, the former Valencia star’s nine-goal haul puts him on par with Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard, and three shy of Alexis Sanchez’s 12 – although, it’s worth noting that Silva has clocked at least 330 fewer minutes than each of these competitors.

In light of Yaya Toure’s return from the African Cup of Nations, many Fantasy managers would have earmarked the Ivorian as the premier route into the Champions midfield – a fair deduction given his streak of six goals in eight appearances before international duty beckoned. However, Toure’s inferior tally of goals (seven) and assists (one) in near-identical minutes to Silva, and weightier price tag (10.7 to 9.4) has thrown up an interesting contest between the pair.

Certainly, pinpointing coverage for Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been afforded greater importance by the absence of numerous high-ownership players next Gameweek. With Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank forcing many managers to bench their big-hitters and field less illustrious back-ups, it’s no surprise to see that Silva has been granted an upsurge in new owners – over 31,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already drafted him in since his 17-point haul against Newcastle, far more than any other player so far.

For now, Silva sits eighth among his midfield counterparts in the Fantasy ownership stakes, having been selected by 19% of managers but one look at the fixtures suggests that could be set to rise further. Although City’s next match-up – a trip to Anfield to face a resolute Liverpool defence – is potentially tricky, the following four fixtures (LEI, bur, WBA, cry) could see Silva wreak havoc as the champions chase down Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table.

The Team

After shipping 16 goals in their first eight away league matches, Liverpool have now recorded five clean sheets on the road for the first time in 30 years. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in ten and have accumulated 23 points out of a possible 27 in their previous nine fixtures as Brendan Rodgers’ side make a belated claim for a top four finish.

This feat is made all the more impressive when you consider that Rodgers has fielded the likes of Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe as wing-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation, balancing the conflicting requirements of width and defensive cover. Liverpool will do well to maintain their newfound defensive resilience as they embark on a run of fixtures (MCI, BUR, swa, MUN, ars) that includes three of the Premier League’s current top four, though with Martin Skrtel in imperious form and Emre Can’s addition proving crucial at the back, there seems little doubt they can prevail. Frustratingly, Rodgers’ decision to bench Alberto Moreno at St Mary’s has lessened his appeal, though, and with Can classified as a midfielder, Skrtel looks the safest option here.

The Reds have been impressive going forward, too, netting five in their last two outings, but Daniel Sturridge’s restoration as a viable high-cost forward will have to wait a little longer – the former Chelsea striker wasn’t named in the starting line-up, having featured in their midweek Europa League clash against Benfica.

With attacking returns in two of his last four league appearances, Philippe Coutinho (7.7) edges ever close to relevancy in the mid-priced midfielder bracket, though fellow weekend scorer Raheem Sterling (8.4) has served up returns in five of his last seven now and, as evidenced by their 2-0 win at St Mary’s, the Reds have the form at both ends of the pitch to trump any fixture right now.

The Talking Point

One look at the ownership levels in the FPL game highlights the issues caused by Gameweek 27 blanks for the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and QPR. Two of the top four defenders (Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry), three of the top six midfielders (Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Christian Eriksen) and three of the top five forwards (Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Charlie Austin) are all affected, handing Fantasy managers a real weekend headache.

Heading into a double Gameweek 28, Spurs’ involvement in crucial domestic and European cup ties leaves us with rotation doubts. Allied to this, the north Londoners face two relatively kind fixtures in their double, so you’d expect boss Mauricio Pochettino to possibly rest a select few during the league ties. Whilst Kane’s 12 goals in 11 outings makes him virtually undroppable, Pochettino’s decision to bench Eriksen against the Hammers yesterday clearly backfired and will surely persuade his manager to start with the Dane as the north London club attempt to get their bid for a top four finish back on track.

With regards to Chelsea coverage, few will want to cash in on the FPL’s leading defender (Ivanovic) or midfielder (Hazard), though Costa may be deemed dispensable as more look to the in-form Aguero as an alternative, with the Argentine finding his stride again.

With our benches set to be fully tested, our struggle to field 11 active players has been further compounded by the declining favour of budget defenders like Patrick van Aanholt and Andre Wisdom, with the latter still sitting third (20.3%) among defender ownership rankings. Balancing our squads and keeping points hits to a minimum looks a tricky task, then, and navigating the options to ensure we take advantage of the next two Gameweeks could well prove critical to many a mini-league success.

Faced with playing Ameobi and Baird this week zero cash and transfers. Should I spend or just suck it up? Also have Clichy but he should play. Was thinking Cork and Bruce for -8. My gut says take a chance on a point each from Ameobi and Baird.

If you'll be happy with their replacements long term it could be worth it. I'd lose Baird but only for someone you'll use a few times in the next month.

    Play Foster or Krul ?
Clyne, Hutton / van Aanholt, Wisdom, Terry
Sanchez, Di Maria, Puncheon, Boyd / Hazard
    Agüero, Giroud / Kane

    2 FT, 1.4 ITB

    A Wisdom ---> Wollscheid
    B Wisdom ---> Cresswell
    C Wisdom + PVA ---> Wollscheid + 5.3 (who?)

    Panti

    PvA, Toby, Wolly, Clichy
    Sanchez, Caz, Wally, Boyd
    Defoe, Aguero

    Krul, Haz, Kane, Terry

as silly as it sounds I'm thinking

Wally and Clichy -> Di Maria and Kompany

was betting on their attacking form, honestly succumbed to Sanchez out of fear haha but wanted the latter two

my thought this weekend is that Walcott is a cup player for now and will get sporadic starts in the league depending on how their schedule looks

        Other forwards are:

        Eriksen v SWA+qpr
        Silva v LEI
        Aguero v LEI

        What should I do???

Wow, tough choice. A is probably the safe option, B has a much bigger upside, but you'll drop in the rankings if Hazard scores well.

Does B have a bigger upside really? Austin needs 1 goal to neutralise the -4. He's going to score more than Hazard after that?

Austin is not worth a -4. Simple really.

    Alright boys,

    Krul
    Clyne,pva,Hutton,baird
    Sanchez,caz,adm,Boyd
    Aguero, Defoe

    Panti,haz,Ivan,kane

    2fts, 1.6 itb thinking:

Baird>Dawson wba have decent fixtures and the pullis clean sheet effect is almost in full steam ahead.
Wolly-Stoke concede like its out of fashion
Haidara-newcastles last performance put me right off that
Alderwield-fitness doubt and would he start straight away do we think, will prob try bring him in and double up later.

    Save the other ft
Know getting rid of Defoe will prob happen next week.

    Pretty template but any thoughts?

yea, dawson is the best option at the moment I guess.

how does he rotate with hutton?

I wouldn't get in heidara, you'd have double new defence, thought of it too, but...

Actually I have Clyne, Terry, and Wollscheid/Dawson/PVA rotating, had a look for the PVA replacement and rotation wise a tot defender would fit perfectly well. but tot and clean sheets... was really disillusioned with the last game - terrible box and cross defending - and well, they have a blank coming up. but having PVA not playing or Rose not playing, who cares?

    2) Johnson -> Mane (wba)

🙂 well, stats say he had a lot of chances... so goals could come in. maybe some sloppy or slow defending from arsenal and there it could happen. but it's risky I agree, everybody has giroud, he might score too etc.

        what about the others?

Do you have 11 guaranteed starters to take Johnson out and leave PVA in your team? If you do than No.3 looks fine, otherwise sort PVA.

no. I'd start PVA and hope... (think he won't play).

but I don't trust the available replacements either, so if there is a decent chance that I make more points with a punt - well, I figure there is some later time to sort out PVA.

            I also like siggy...

Defense in a mess. Have 2ft and 3.2 ITB. What do you reckon I do with this lot?

    Panti
    Belle, Clichy, PvA, Wasil (Terry)
Downing, Cazorla, Silva, Di Maria (Hazard)
    Kun, Defoe (Kane)

Plan was to do Wasil -> Bruce/Mcshane this week
Then in the DGW Maria + Defoe -> Eriksen + Austin.

    What say friends?

I'm very sceptical about tot defence. think austin might be better as the second transfer next week. you wanna get him at first after the dgw?

have kind of a similar problem with pva (see above) - think I'll keep him for now...

I thought about ivan for terry too but decided it's too sideways. and you have a lot of transfers?

I wanted to get Austin in for DGW. Eriksen a def for it but deciding between Austin and Rose for a -4 in DGW.

I thought Ivan was a sideways step too however he seems a better bet at goals and assists as well as clean sheets. Terry seems to just get clean sheet points at mo.

                DGW: Eriksen and Austin/Rose (-4)

Following week: Ozil/Caz/Fab for Eriksen and Ivan for Terry? (-4).

                Or is that madness?

depends on your rank with the hits but I wouldn't take any anymore if not totally necessary.
until now ivan is 15pts better than terry. more than half played, well, maybe it could pay off. not for me because my rival has ivan, so I'd hope for some more goals after corners from terry.

dgw: rose nono for -4 imo. austin maybe. if you have something to loose I'd play save and go eriksen only. you can keep him the following week maybe, he has qpr or not?, should be something in it... so you can do terry to ivan, no -4...

I learned hard with taking too many hits and doing stupid transfers 😉

I'm currently top of my mini league, 50 points ahead of second place. Been toying with bringing Costa back after the blank but would mean if have to downgrade one of Sanchez, Eriksen, Hazard or silva and not sure I'm keen on that.

Eriksen is a must DGW for me, Austin I'd like but not sure on his return as his DGW is Spurs and Arsenal.

so even less arguments for the -4. Stay clear! let the chasers take the hits.

Thorgan Hazard has signed a permanent deal with Bundesliga side Borussia Monchebgladbach until the summer of 2020.

The 21-year-old, who is the younger brother of Chelsea winger Eden, has left Stamford Bridge permanently after impressing on a season-long loan to Germany in July 14.

No. He was voted Belgian player of the season last year at Zulte. He has had rave reviews at Borussia. €8m (if that's the price) is cheap and it will only be that low because Chelsea have a buy-back clause. He could turn out better than his brother - Eden says Thorgan is the more talented of the two.

i think the idea of a double GW can cause tunnel vision. i remember a couple occasions where someone not playing two games scored more than their double GW counterpart. this being especially true of defenders (barring ivanovic and j. enrique). think i'll be avoiding the tendency to bring in a spurs def, even if they have 2 games.

    Forster
    Dawson Hutton Wollscheild
    Sanchez Walcott Hazard Silva Cazorla
    Aguero Kane

    Gilks Defoe PVA Baird

This is my strongest team atm. I just don't feel there's a balance between by defence, midfield and attack. For the DGW, I plan to do Walcott to Eriksen. I won't get Austin as I'd have to bench Cazorla/Sanchez. The following GW ill ship Sanchez for Sterling?, and upgrade Defoe + PVA/Baird.

I know plans often change, but this is the most sensible thing to do right?

Yeah, Sanchez is a concern for most owners, TBF his last proper home game was V Stoke and that was many GWs ago in which time he has been injured and rushed back.

He was alot more threatning V Palace on Saturday and so definitely should be given two last chances V Everton and QPR.

Walcott though is really where we need to sort it out first.

    Forster Hamer
    Terry clyne bellerin Dawson Bruce
    Sanchez yaya sterling hazard Ameobi
    Aguero giroud Kane

As u can see, I have made a conscious effort to make my team value high. If not for the extra transfers if probably be top. However now is my time to shine! I have loads more money in my team than the guy above me. The question is how do I use it most wisely? I like my forwards and keeper, but not sure about my defense and midfield. Do I

    A) stick with wot I have
    B) switch yaya to silva and use the additional money on other transfers such as ivanovic for terry
